Amazing place to stay. I haven’t stayed at a traditional Japanese place before. The beds are basically a small mattress on the floor with a blanket so don’t expect much. It’s a 8 minute walk to all the shops and a 5 minute walk to the subway. Don’t listen to the bad reviews as the staff are all friendly. Place is clean and comfortable and quiet.

Stayed in a half traditional, half western room. Staff were welcoming and professional, an absolutely smooth process when it comes to the staffing. Location is decent, quiet enough neighborhood but a little bit of a walk to transport links. This worked for us but may not be for everyone. The rooms were spacious and well kept, however in need of a little updating. There was a strange smell in the room, eminating from the traditional straw mats I think but not sure. Possibly related to the cleaning agents used. Seemed better when sliding doors were closed overnight. The smell was quite irritating.

I booked here predominantly due to price as all hotels around Kyoto were quite expensive and I figured that since this was a ryokan it would be worthwhile.||The location is fairly central with regards to Kyoto but it's not extremely convenient to a whole lot. It's a fair distance to most attractions and even the ones that are relatively close such as the Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine takes about half an hour with a transfer by metro. The closest metro station is about a 10 minute walk and there's not a whole lot to eat and do in the area.||The room we got was fairly small from my peception of a ryokan. There was a small wooden stool and table but it didn't really seem like the setup I expected. The room was lagging behind in maintenance and cleanliness: the screen door had a number of stains on it alongside as a section of the cloth covering the base of the walls. The wood that was used was chipped in a number of spots, especially on the edges of alcoves and storage areas. The futon was pretty thin for my liking although the pillows were fine. The door to the room also had an issue where you had to manually lock it instead of it doing so automatically.||The bathroom wasn't extremely small but it was pretty narrow. The vanity area was small and the toilet was positioned to where you were mere inches from the wall. The internet also had a significant problem with speed from my experience with it.||Breakfast needs to be ordered the previous day before 22:00 and consisted of a Japanese option, American option, Continental option, and Granola option. I thought the prices were reasonable and I got the Japanese options both times and thought it was reasonably well done. ||Service was a bit of a hit or miss, it wasn't necessarily that it was bad it was just inconsistent especially for the type of product that wished to be presented. It seemed a bit cold at times though it definitely varied by staff member.||I can't fault the place significantly since the hotel is significantly cheaper than pretty much most anything in the area (including competing ryokans) but the lack of upkeep and inconsistent service as well as elements of the experience make this far from the most authentic ryokan experience possible.

The rooms were very spacious for Japan, plenty of room for our suitcases and we could still walk around. No view out of the window, they were frosted. Rooms were very clean. We got slippers and robes to use while we were staying. Service was excellent, they spoke great English. They stored our bags for us for free after checkout until we left Kyoto later that day. The location was perfect- close to shops and restaurants, but not noisy or crowded at all.

We stayed at a ryokan in Kyoto and appreciated the great location and the inviting foyer, which gave a good first impression. Unfortunately, the room was quite cramped for two people. We had requested a Japanese-style bed, but once laid out, there was barely any room to move. The bedding was only folded up during the day rather than properly stored away, which made the space feel even more limited. It also wasn’t set out again at night, which we had expected.||Breakfast was okay but very limited, and the timing was quite inflexible. On a more positive note, the bar was open in the evenings and had a nice, relaxed atmosphere.||Overall, a convenient base with some charming features, but the room comfort and service details left something to be desired.

We loved this hotel, we booked a junior suite and enjoyed having a balcony, as well as a choice of sleeping on the tatami mats and the western bed. Everything was immaculately clean. The service was excellent and I enjoyed the traditional Japanese breakfast. Excellent location also, very walkable. The only downside and why we gave it four stars instead of five is our room had poor sound insulation and we heard so much banging from neighbouring rooms both morning and late night that we had to wear earplugs to sleep.

After a night at the immaculate Takayama Ouan ryokan in Hida-Takayama, I’ve been spoiled. This Kyoto “ryokan” feels a bit cheap. Something like a gimmick or wallpaper slapped onto a hostel. For what you pay, the elevation of service, ambience, and attention to detail just isn’t there. From insufficient (read: too short) polyester bedding to glaring overhead lights (all or nothing! Aside from a single floor lamp….) to weak WiFi, it feels like I’m on a Disneyland ride that was being sold as the real thing... it’s not the worst — solid location, nothing inherently “wrong” with it — just didn’t standout. And was a bit underwhelming compared to all the other accommodations we’ve experienced around Japan.

Super duper foreigner friendly” I wanna personally give a shout out to the great staff that are friendly and bilingual. Especially the one named Hugo, I had a specific situation where I was having trouble finding a box for a certain item that was ergonomically weird. He was able to create a housing that was padded to ship. It was super kind of him. All over a nice place with nishiki and other things around. I only wish it was a tad closer to the station. But everything else was perfect.
