"This under-loved 60-acre green space onthe east bank of the Kamo River with 120,000 plants and more than12,000 species is one of the best spots in Kyoto to reflect on nature. The garden has extensive cherry tree groves, tropical greenhouses filled with rare flora, a night flower garden planted with nocturnal blooms, and beds of perennials and annuals thatattract bees, small copper butterflies, and Daurian redstart birds."

Check out these hidden gems of Kyoto – it’s not all temples and shrines - SilverKris

"The country's oldest botanical garden, featuring over 100,000 plants and roughly 12,000 different species spread across winding paths that invite long strolls or picnics; entry costs 200 yen. Visitors can explore a variety of themed sections at their own pace and should be sure to visit the conservatory, a distinct climate-controlled space that houses about 4,500 species of exotic plants." - SilverKris

It's a nice garden that feels local, but nice and peaceful to walk around in. They had some nice fall foliage when I visited 2025 Dec 2. Their conservatory also has some fascinating plants. The bonsai exhibition was fun as well.

Very well maintained and cheap to enter (¥500), these gardens were a great way to close off a day. While I didn't get to see the spring cherry blossoms or full array of Autumn colours, there was still plenty to look at and enjoy. There is a section of native plants, foreign plants, japanese gardens, rose gardens, bonzai exhibits, cherry blossoms, acorns, ume and many others, as well as various ponds and streams. Very calm and tranquil - I only had about 70 minutes to spare here, and I'd love to come back and see more someday.

Went there after we got tired of all touristy places and did not regret it. The place is very calm and quiet. It has cute cafe in the middle of the garden. I gave 4 starts and not 5 because most plants did not have flowers but I am sure it is magical during the cherry bloom or in the fall when the leaves change colors. I recommend the place if you have seen all the temples and shrines and need some time away from tourists.

Such a magical place. It is worth my 600 yen. 500 yen for entrance and 100 for the extra stamp. You can also collect 3 free stamps, but to do the stamp card makes the experience more fun. There are enough places to hide if it’s raining and multiple restaurants and toilets. I went with a friend but this would also be a cute date spot.

Not to be missed in Kyoto! I have visited many Botanical Gardens around the World, and this one is now in my top three. The conservatory alone is worth the trip, and the 500 yen admission fee is a bargain!

We went here while waiting for our hotel room, but I could have spent all day here! There's biomes represented here you wouldn't even think to put in a botanical garden. Pleasant, quiet, and large enough to not really run into crowds. Conservatory is large and you can spend a couple hours in there, a great rainy day activity.

Google
A lovely place for plants and flowers lovers. Bring your student card (if any) for ticket discount or free entrance depending on the seasons. For people from tropical country, the tropical house was like everything you could see in your home country so if you want something new, maybe this one can be left out, plus you have to pay extra to get into this area. Everything else was good. The flowers and scene you can see may change throughout the year. Check the flower of each month.

What a beautiful place! I can in late May and the rose garden was absolutely beautiful!! They had so many different types and colors! This botanical garden really has something for everyone. They have manicured garden beds, native plants, a conservatory, a forested area and even the natural forest. There was also a very small shrine that was there which was beautiful and very quiet. I recommend going early when they first get there since I was met with quite a few school groups later in the day, but I didn't mind.

Yelp
We found this place accidentally during one Spring morning in Kyoto while hunting for Cherry Blossoms and I fell in love with it instantly. They have of course lots of different flora but I was specially captivated by the tulips and Cherry blossoms. Some people brought their picnic mats and food so they had a great time under the good weather and the cherry trees. It's really a beautiful place and hopefully I can go back there again soonnnnnnn....

Yelp
Because I went on a motorcycle, I was not troubled with the parking lot! However, the parking lot of the car seems to be crowded because there is not so it. I recommend that go in public transport:) Many plants are planted and there are beautiful!!!! The flower that they can watch by a season is different, but a spring cherry tree and a summer hydrangea are recommended‼ It is all right even if U do not know what flower it is! billboard teaches U!!!! The person liking flowers, please drop in. p.s There is the cafe that cakes are delicious near an exit!!

Yelp
Nice place to visit. However, I recommend going in the springtime when most flowers and cherry blossoms are in bloom. I went in early October and there was not too much to see except for large groves of trees and some cosmos. But I can imagine how pretty it must be when the time is right. It is easily accessible by subway and the entrance fee is reasonable. There is an additional entrance fee for the arboretum.

Yelp
I had lived in a dormitory close to this publicly-operated large-scale botanical garden for only two years of my college period. But I'd not been here while I stayed in Kyoto. When I was junior, I returned home and attended my university from my house. I have been here twice. For the first time I came here with my junior of the circle activity when I was senior, next with a female friend of mine after I got married. Anyway, rumor has it that there is a sad legend of Kyoto. If couples come to a certain place, they will be apart. For example as a famous spot, Togetsukyo bridge. If a couple cross the bridge together, their relations will be over. There is no scientific evidence. I don't know whether it is true or not. So please misunderstand it. But this botanical garden is also counted for it. Both of them were my important friends. However I had said good bye to them for a long time because of a slight misunderstanding. A few years ago, our relationship has been regained. Sorry, back to the main topic. If you stop by here, you will enjoy seasonal flowers all year around. This garden is composed of two areas, Western one such as rose gardens or tulip beds and Japanese one like plum trees and so on. Especially tulip season is special! Also a large green house is annexed. You can observe various tropical plants here. Kamo river flows along the west side and a fashionable street of Kitayama adjacent to the north. You will enjoy strolling in the garden and shopping at the same time.

Yelp
Located located along the Kitayama street and close to Kitayama subway station or bus stop "京都府立植物園 Kyoto Botanical Garden" I was here as school activity in elementary school. I guess almost all students have been here. At the moment we had to walk hand in hand with a classmate but I was crazy shy so I didn't do that. Oh it's really lovely my memory haha Beside of this garden, there is a cute cafe. Yummy food, unpretentious people, cozy place. That is amazing cafe! It takes a bit wait at lunch but it is worth! I had pizza lunch so delicious! I can't wait to try it again!
