Ace Hotel Kyoto Is Now Accepting Reservations - AFAR

"Built in the mid-1920s by architect Tetsuro Yoshida, this historic telephone company building was partially retained and sensitively repurposed as the centerpiece of a hotel development, with restoration and design choices intended to connect the building, its land, and its history. The conserved structure sits opposite a new addition across a green courtyard and anchors gallery and public spaces within the adaptive complex." - Sarah Buder

Google
5-stars for the location but it stops there. The room was more spacious than other hotels but the bathroom was very small. I’m 5’6 but I was hitting my knees on the wall while on the toilet. The bed was as comfortable as sleeping on a wooden box and I think the pillows had little cut up pieces of straws in one side while the other side was flat. The staff were okay but not very helpful and you often had to call them from the back because they weren’t at the desk consistently. Because you’re central, you do hear the city noises but it didn’t bother us. If you’re okay with location over comfort, it’s a good pick. Next time, I’d spend a little more on a central hotel with more comfort so we can get better sleep to enjoy our days.

Not sure how this is a 3-star hotel. It is very old and run down, the bathroom is smaller than a airplane bathroom - the rooms however are decently sized? You can't even sit on the toilet properly due to the size of the bathroom and strange orientation of the toilet. The Wifi didn't work either, I asked about this and apparently they knew about this problem for quite a while. During our 3-day stay it was not fixed. Kind of a bummer because our room didnt have cell service either, so no way of reaching the internet, making calls or texting. There were mosquitoes in our room for some reason? May be related to the issue where you can literally hear anything from the street down below, it sounded like the windows were open (but they were facing a wall and shut close?). A good nights sleep is nothing that can be achieved in this hotel, the sound of loud cars, ambulances and the crosswalk through the night were horrendous. If I would visit Kyoto again I would choose a more expensive further-from mainstreet.

Excellent hotel! Good location (nearby there is a bus stop, metro station, cafes, food shops) in the tourist area of Kawaramachi, there are many interesting places around and not so far from the river embankment. The room itself is spacious, clean, cozy. A bit old furniture, but all household items worked. Cleaning was good and timely. Friendly and helpful staff. In terms of price and quality - a great choice!

Location is in the middle of the train station. The room I was in is spacious, unlike APA. Recommended then for the convenience next to Nikishi market.

I am shocked to say this was my worst hotel experience ever. The bed was absolute terrible. Hardest spring mattress that must have been decades old. The sink cold not be adjusted and only HOT water came out. There was a random air purifier in the room which raised questions.. I couldn’t even sleep 30 min before my throat and nose started closing up. Everything is wrong with this hotel including the air quality. Staff was very unfriendly when I spoke with them about my issues. Not even sure if he will notify management. Stay clear of this place.

Perfect location opposite Takashimaya and Fujii Daimaru at the centre of Kyoto. The room is pretty small and looks quite old. As the wifi is available to everyone who has access to the elevator, the connection suffers quite tremendously. The speed is also very compromised.

Good service from the reception and helpful. Room is satisfactory, small but convenient location. I came here last year. Thank you so much for the good service here. Arigato~🫶🏻ありがとうございます from Malaysia 🇲🇾

Yelp
If you love sleeping in the scent of ash trays and furnishings from the 60's, this is the right place for you! If you're a normal person, I suggest you stay far far way from here. Yes it's right outside the kawaramachi station and is convenient, but I would really rather walk an extra 10-15 minutes not to stay here. The rooms are very old and mostly allow smoking. The walls, curtains, and everything else in the room reeks of smoke and musk. It's disgusting. The bathroom is puny, even for Japan standards. And every device in this room is about 100 years old. The AC doesn't work. Just about every terrible thing that you can imagine, you will find here. I'd pay the extra $5/ night and stay anywhere else. If I hadn't already prepaid, I would cancel my reservation.
