For some reason, I expected to see the history of arts and crafts, but this exhibition focused on showing you the craftsmanship of Kyoto. It was very very well put together, and very interactive. We had fun! My only problem was that it was so much smaller than we expected. It only takes up a tiny part of the building it's in. When we bought the ticket, we also got a discount ticket for the museum shop.

Small museum in Kyoto, it takes around 1h to check the exhibition. A lady was doing lacquer; although she did not interact with foreign visitors... I love design so I liked the spot.

Really enjoyed this museum - it is so informative and innovative. It's a great introduction to Kyoto and it's heritage of craftsmanship. It was great getting to have a go at some crafts and the interactive displays were brilliant!

Exceeded expectations with some really cool interactive stations. Both me and my partner enjoy crafts and were getting big time inspiration from some of the detailed explanations of how these ancient crafts were done.

Such a nice and small museum. Small, but packed with interesting stuff about real japanese crafts with examples

LOVED THIS PLACE ... not a huge display but many techniques & processes are explained with examples of each stage. The intricate work that goes into pieces is amazing. Along the way you get to appreciate the craftmanship & culture It includes lacquer wear, ceramics, gold foil, textiles, homewares & so much more. We spent 2 hours in the displays then made some purchases in gift shop.

Truly one of the best and most informative museums I've ever visited. All the descriptions have English translation available and it really goes into detail about the manufacturing process and historical context of the exhibit. If there's too much text and you feel overwhelmed then no worries! You'll be given an exhibition catalog when buying a ticket which you can real later It's okay to take photos and the museum's shop has really cool souvenirs

Very interactive and interesting exhibition! There was also a live demonstration of a craft - at the time of our visit it was making cards! The Japanese have had many centuries to perfect their crafts and it shows. Everything was done in crazy detail and the amount of work needed for some of the pieces is staggering. This was probably my favorite museum of the trip!

Yelp
I enjoyed my first visit to the Kyoto Museum of Traditional Craft and Design. It's located in the basement of the Miyako Messe building and is part museum and part museum store. The museum covers a wide variety of traditional crafts, including pottery, ikebana, kimonos, basket making, swords, and many more. Most of the graphs have labels in both of Japanese and English and tell interesting stories on how the item is created. Worth your time if you're interested in Japanese design and crafts.
