This museum wasn't on my primary list of places to visit, but it seemed like a good place to go on a rainy day. So glad I went! The museum is set up beautifully with numerous hands-on displays. There was also an artist painting fabric while I was there. If you appreciate fine handiwork, this museum is certainly worth a visit for the bargain admission of 500 yen. There's a gorgeous gift shop, too.

Probably one of my favorite attractions we visited in Japan. Loved reading about all of the crafts and how they are made. A lot of the exhibits are interactive and there was a pop-up of ceramics and an artist crafting on site!

For some reason, I expected to see the history of arts and crafts, but this exhibition focused on showing you the craftsmanship of Kyoto. It was very very well put together, and very interactive. We had fun! My only problem was that it was so much smaller than we expected. It only takes up a tiny part of the building it's in. When we bought the ticket, we also got a discount ticket for the museum shop.

It’s a small museum but beautiful examples of traditional Kyoto arts and crafts with some hands on displays. The kimonos and fabrics displayed were fabulous.

Small museum in Kyoto, it takes around 1h to check the exhibition. A lady was doing lacquer; although she did not interact with foreign visitors... I love design so I liked the spot.

I highly recommend that anyone visiting Kyoto visit this museum. In fact, I think it should be an obligatory/requirement when you come to Kyoto because you learn so much about the things you are seeing around you that originate from this region. There are digital screens where you can click on a certain type of craft or design and learn more about it, such as lacquerware. I could have spent half a day in here learning! And I love the parts of the museum that were interactive! It has a very cute gift shop too. Because of this museum, I started looking for more craft museums in Japan for each city I visited. Thank you!

Really enjoyed this museum - it is so informative and innovative. It's a great introduction to Kyoto and it's heritage of craftsmanship. It was great getting to have a go at some crafts and the interactive displays were brilliant!

Yelp
I enjoyed my first visit to the Kyoto Museum of Traditional Craft and Design. It's located in the basement of the Miyako Messe building and is part museum and part museum store. The museum covers a wide variety of traditional crafts, including pottery, ikebana, kimonos, basket making, swords, and many more. Most of the graphs have labels in both of Japanese and English and tell interesting stories on how the item is created. Worth your time if you're interested in Japanese design and crafts.
