"Caen was William the Conqueror’s city and this 11th-century abbey was his final resting place. Founded by William himself in 1066, the former Benedictine monastery and its adjoining Église St-Étienne are among the most important Romanesque buildings in Normandy. The abbey features elegant interiors (now home to Caen’s City Hall), while the church showcases Gothic additions like a ribbed vault, rosette windows, and flying buttresses. Though William the Conqueror’s tomb was destroyed in the 16th century and again during the French Revolution, a stone marks its original spot just in front of the church’s magnificent choir."

A Majestic Step into History at Abbaye aux Hommes – Caen’s Hidden Gem I visited the Abbaye aux Hommes today, and it completely exceeded my expectations. From the moment I stepped into the courtyard, I was struck by the peaceful atmosphere and the stunning architecture. The abbey is beautifully preserved, and its mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles makes every detail worth admiring. Whether you’re interested in medieval history, architecture, or just want a beautiful and serene place to walk through, the Abbaye aux Hommes is a must-visit in Caen. Highly recommended!

Come here as early as you can and allow 4 hours for the visit if you want to read every sign. Its absolutely worth it as you learn so so much. You learn about William the Conqueror, about Caen in Dday, about the high school that was once here. You can see the ruins from the bombings in the nearby buildings across the Abbaye. Lots of information provided and difficult to imagine what was once happening here.

I've seen this building last year for gala dinner held by horse genome project 2024. That was stunning with wall painting and colors.

One of the greatest buildings in Europe. Around it, some lovely streets remaining from the old city.

Large Abbey location of the tomb William the Conquerer. Recommend the monastery self guided tour with history of the monks and the Abbey during the bombings. Cost €6.
