10 Best Coffee Shops in Madrid | Condé Nast Traveler

"Squint and you could be in Kreuzberg or East London: The exposed brick, tattered sofas, and bikes chained to the ceiling lend La Bicicleta a rakish charm that's unusual in Madrid. You don't need to know your Chemex from your cold brew to order coffee here—La Bicicleta's hot beverage menu ticks all the boxes without venturing into coffee geekdom. As the day wears on, forego the caffeinated standbys for cool, sudsy cañas—Madrid slang for half-pints of beer—and well-made cocktails. Pop in when you're not in a rush, with your laptop or a chatty friend and at least an hour to kill—that way, you won't be biting your nails if breakfast takes 20 minutes to arrive." - Benjamin Kemper

Google
Lovely atmosphere and great location. The café has a really cool vibe and is perfectly situated. However, it felt a bit overhyped and overpriced. The food was good but not special. Just the day before we visited a lesser-known brunch spot and had a much better food experience. That said, the coffee is excellent, definitely a highlight of the visit.

Google
One of the best specialty coffee spots in Madrid! I had a V60 and it was absolutely delicious — perfectly balanced and full of flavor. I also tried their Costa Rica brew, and it was incredibly smooth and well-extracted. Their dessert selection is both diverse and tasty, making it a great place to enjoy a full coffee experience. Special thanks to Kim who made my coffee — super skilled, friendly, and clearly passionate about what they do. The entire team is professional and welcoming. Highly recommended!

Google
A nice cafe in the heart of Madrid. it's just a few minutes from chueca. The place is small and cozy. The white wine was nice and the prices were good. The only complaint is they close very early around 8 pm. A local friend of mine took me to this place. I highly recommend it. They also have breakfast all day.

Google
Good food, good coffee, and cool ambiance! The service was good, the art and decor were very cool. Good wifi too, great if you're traveling and looking for breakfast/lunch.

Google
Amazing cold brew, worth coming here just to try it. The vanilla latte was a bit on the sweet side. Really nice vibe, great place to study or relax and great decor with bicycle themed decoration

Google
“The coffee tasted delicious, the service was great, the sweets and everything else were amazing, and the atmosphere was lovely. Highly recommended!”

Google
Came here to study for a few hours with my laptop and I was so happy to see they had two large tables, dedicated to shared working (but I’m not sure if you can have laptops on weekends?) The coffee was so nice and the food as well - can’t say I recommend a specific item as everything I saw come out of the kitchen looked so good! Very clean and such a nice atmosphere - busy without feeling overwhelming. The servers were also really nice so I’m definitely coming back 👏

Google
The place is very nice, the food was incredible and the coffee is delicious. The staff could’ve been friendlier and maybe more attentive about the order. We never got something we ordered even after reminding them 4 times about it. Maybe they are overworked due to the place being always crowded, but there could be some improvement in the attitude towards the people. Other than that, everything was very nice. I would recommend this place further!

Yelp
This review is more so for their staff than for the coffee itself, but if you are looking for a cafe with kind people for a little midday descanso (break) this is the place! My husband is a big coffee guy and this name consistently came up on lists of coffee shops to try in Madrid. We hit 3 different coffee shops in this neighborhood, and the interior of this one was the cutest. The staff was super helpful in helping us to decide which drink to order; very patient with questions. Note: if you're used to coffees having syrups or being on the sweeter side, skip this one.

Yelp
This spot was across the courtyard from our stay in Madrid. After reading some of the reviews, I was excited to try this place. The excitement died out quick when I felt like I was back home at some hipster brunch spot. Don't get me wrong, the theme and decor was spot on. I was just expecting a little more of a authentic Spain decor and feel... After all, I am in Spain... Now, on to the food. I would rate the coffee about 4 stars. I had a cortado and a cappuccino. Both very delicious, However, the food was mediocre and my poached eggs were under cooked. If that is even possible... The whites were not white but still clear and I felt like I was eating an almost raw egg. The food seemed too American for me. Yes, there was a little touch of fusion with Jamon being thrown in here and there. However, the menu wasn't anything difference than what I could find back home. Another disappointment... Overall, this place is nice for coffee but I wouldn't stay here for the food. There are SO many great options around the area for authentic food. I've decided to #1 never let a friend choose the location. #2 eat something I can't find back home. Lesson learned!

Yelp
Very cute place! Love the ambiance, but they do have rules about working on your computer. As someone who seeks out a cafe in order to work, this was a bummer. With this, their chai latte was mostly milk very little spice. However, the service staff was nice, and my burger was pretty good!

Yelp
Getting to this cafe was definitely an uphill climb (it was literally uphill haha) but the coffee was a smooth ride so it was worth it. I got a café con leche and it was great! The WiFi is confusing to get onto (just ask if you need help), but it's pretty fast. Great place to do work, but they do play music. Lots of tables and seats (and a decent amount of outlets too!) Hostess also speaks English! Overall, I would definitely come Bi(cicleta) cada día.

Yelp
Sweet little spot in chueca. Got a spot right away. Staff is very friendly and English speaking. Food is good. I had the New Yorker with a side of avocado and it came with a latte and orange juice.

Yelp
I was looking for some Tostada with tomatoes but they only do it from Monday to Friday, not on the week-end. Therefore, I opted for a disappointing yogurt. As they ran out of granola 20 minutes after the opening I went for red fruits. A glass of yogurt with a few fruits and a spoon of marmalade for EUR 4.50 is a little bit high. What saves the place is the coffee, the filtered one that I had was really good. Service is friendly but non that great. There are better and more convenient places where to get breakfast (and simple Tostadas everyday...).

Yelp
Hip as heck! I was at the door when the opened at 10:00am on a Sunday. Staff immediately switched to English when they heard my impossibly bad attempts at Spanish. The host asked if I would be using a computer (they're a hang out for that) and when I said yes he informed me that all computer-using-lingering folks are banished to the basement on weekends, and suggested it check it out before committing. It was cool and windowless but brightly lit and full of charm with bikes hanging on the exposed brick walls, a large communal table, and several smaller tables with an eclectic variety of chairs. I ordered shaved turkey and cheese on a toasted croissant, added two eggs. It came with a salad. All tasty although the salad was overly salted. Also had a fresh OJ and a latte. Enjoyed it all and felt at ease keeping the table for ages...long after I finished eating.

Yelp
You have to come here! This place has the best LOX BAGEL in the game for breakfast & to top it off their MOJITOS are the best in town. The staff if very friendly and most of them are fluent in english so it is very easy to get knowledge from them. The sad part is they don't serve alcohol until 1p because it is a cafe and work place. Regardless their cold brew coffee is the way to go if you need energy and something to wake up too. You have to come here if you visit madrid!

Yelp
First time trying out this place. We had salmon on a brioche with a poached egg on top and my friend had the same but with meat. The eggs were terribly undercooked which caused me to get food poisoning. When i had asked the waiter if it was normal for it to be runny, they mentioned that was their way of cooking eggs. The meat has large pieces of bone that you wouldn't expect. The service is also very slow, you'd expect to receive a simple brioche with eggs that aren't cooked quite fast I'd suggest avoiding

Yelp
Great coffeehouse in Malasaña with free wifi and a workplace environment. The place is filled with couches, bar stools, and tables to sit with your friends. If you're looking for a place to work, don't hesitate further and come to La Bicicleta. It's a neat spot!

Yelp
Lousy service, bland food and you constantly have to ask for your food and/or drink. Literally, I asked like 5 times for my wife's latte. Our experience: We didnt hace reservations for breakfast so we were seated in a big community table with other guests, which was fine with us. We say for 10 minutes without service until I got up and asked for the menus. Then we wait another 10 minutes to have our order taken. I grabbed their super lunch which came with OJ, a latte, toast, scrambled or poached egg, choice of meat (i had smoked salmon) and yogurt or fruit to finish. My wife grabbed the salmon bagel with a poached egg. So we waited 20 minutes to order, I got my OJ right away but my wife didn't get her coffee. I got my food 20 minutes after ordering. My wife? Still hasn't gotten her coffee. I asked 4 different servers until finally they brought her coffee. 10 minutes after I got my food my wife finally gets her coffee and her food. Me? I got my latte after asking for it after I had already finished my meal. My fruit that came with my meal sadly never came. My wife loved her food. My salmon was good, my eggs could have used a little salt/pepper but they didn't have it on the table. My latte was luke warm and no sugar came with it yet they gave me a spoon? I don't get it. I don't think the 24 euros I spent was worth it. But hey, the place is cool and "hip".

Yelp
Wish I had a bike to ride to this cafe but walked around the side streets and found this amazing place. I found the decoration of this place really cool and service is good but surprisingly the food was amazing. If Im a local, this would be my to go spot to read, eat, surf the internet or just people watch since it's on a nice corner spot. #donthatetheridershatetheleg

Yelp
Super busy inside yet staff was attentive. Cool vibe with many people on their laptops. I ordered a potato omelet on toast and a flat white. Omelet was delicious however there flat white was too bitter and had a burnt taste so a bit disappointed.

Yelp
I found this place on a list of remote-work friendly cafes in Madrid, and I would agree! It was remote work friendly! The food was good but more expensive than my (limited) Madrileño experience. However! They didn't bother me for the space for the 2-3 hours I was there and the service was attentive and nice. The worst part was a rude university group who came in during my time there, but (1) obviously that's not a reflection on the business and (2) I thought the servers dealt with them really well. I mention it only because I suspect that it happens on a regular basis, given the location and the aplomb with which the staff handled the situation.

Yelp
Expensive for Madrid. Packed on a Sunday afternoon, and as a result, the Wi-Fi was barely good enough for light emailing. Could not stream anything. The carrot cake was decent. The green tea packet had hardly any leaves in it, which made for some weak tea. Would probably not come here again.
google avatar

Daniel Felipe A.

Yelp
Beautiful places but the employees and the service is completely horrible. It is a shame cuz it is very well located. On the other hand, it is cheap but the food and drinks veeeery regular.
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
Was here last month under... less than great circumstances (is all I'll say for my last shred of dignity). The staff are incredibly personable. Food is healthier, modern cuisine. Bathroom is in the back, down some steps (a lot of people coming and going had difficulty finding it). Lots of open spaces and good natural light. Good coffee too!
google avatar

Fede R.

Yelp
Cool hipster style coffee shop. Great coffee, some good food options. Nice place to hang out. Worth the visit ;)

Yelp
Stopped by La Bicicleta after Café de la Luz was closed. It was great and spacious making me feel comfortable sitting inside with COVID. I ordered their avocado toast with tomatoes, it was served on thick freshly baked bread. Delicious, followed by a cortado. Perfect place to get some work done as well as they have free Wifi, make sure to ask for the password (contraseña). I will definitely be back soon!
google avatar

Hannah A.

Yelp
La Bicicleta made me feel closer to home in Spain than I would have liked . Each morning I would traipse down the narrow passage ways from my hostel in the heart of Malasana bearing a hangover. Objective: To acquire coffee and reliable wi-fi . I thought that maybe the employees were snobby here because they don't like Americans. After assimilating for a few weeks in Calle Barco and versing myself in spanish, I came to a conclusion. I had warped myself back to a spanish-dubbed San Francisco. The problem is me. I love good coffee and kitschy decor. Still I wonder, why does that always exclude a friendly smile? Regardless, I went everyday and virtually inhaled that delicious Tostada Con Tomate . Do you know that hipster joke about coffee? Q:Why did the hipster burn his mouth? A: Because he drank coffee before it was cool .

Yelp
Very delicious and pretty looking food. Cute cafe with a variety of sitting areas, trendy but outdoor vibe.
google avatar

Yelp
Crazy good tea, brunch and breakfast menu options! A great atmosphere so pretty much a favorite in Madrid. It's chill to hang or work as they have space for plugs and laptop use in the center of the cafe upstairs.
google avatar

Chandler R.

Yelp
I have been search for a coffee shop that you can sit, drink coffee and enjoy a good book. Here is the epitome of what I've been looking for! I liked it better than J & J's, which was opened by an American, that was trying to achieve this coffee shop atmosphere that you find all throughout the U.S. I personally think that La Bicicleta does a better job of creating this atmosphere! This coffee shop is bigger than most that I've been in. It has free, open wifi so you don't need a password! The music is down pretty low, so not distracting, but you're still able to hear it- they were playing music comparable to Mumford & Sons. It is very hipster & earthy. I got there at 11 am & got the perfect spot, on one of the 3 or 4 couches, but by noon there were a lot of people & the noise level rose a little. I was only here in the morning/ early afternoon time so I'm not sure what it is like at night but it doesn't close until 2:30 am so it turns a little more bar-y I'm sure! Each place I considered sitting had outlet plugs right next to it! They have several pastries you can choose from as well as a menu! The sandwiches looked so good- they came out on a wheat bread & looked as if they had a panini maker! YUM!! You order at the bar & you can go sit down & they'll bring it to you or you can wait on it at the bar! I wouldn't sit down & wait for a waiter :) I got a Cafe Americano & a croissant & it was only 2.50! Don't make the dumb mistake that I did... I asked a guy standing outside of a restaurant next to it, where it was & the guy laughed & pointed about 5 steps away. The actual place was a little hard to find because the only sign they have is a sticker on the door with their name on it. If you're looking at the church in that plaza, go to your right & you'll see a white building & that's it!

Yelp
Bagel with salmon and poached egg was amazing! Definitely 5 stars. My latte was a little small for me. Wish they had size options. cafe feel great but not necessarily comfortable. We were just 2 so our table was small and was put at the corner. It was near lunch time so i can imagine it can get very busy!
google avatar

Mr B.

Yelp
Sandwiches, salads, full funky cafe environment and hipster vibe through and through. I'd say if there were ten better cafes in all of Madrid I'd be shocked! I got hot chocolate, chilled out and took a break from the mayhem of shopping and exploring plazas in the Spring rains making beautiful flowers throughout the city.
google avatar

Diana V.

Yelp
Very cute and trendy coffee shop in Malasaña. They had free WiFi and plenty of outlets for laptops/phones as a working space, but I just stopped in for a quick breakfast, which was delicious. Not a coffee drinker so I can't comment on that, but definitely a cute place to stop in for a breakfast or coffee. I don't speak much Spanish but the staff was super helpful and attentive.
google avatar

Morgan W.

Yelp
May be my favorite study cafe in Madrid. The staff is so kind, the menu has an assortment of drinks and munchies, and the study space downstairs is perfect for late night work. The upper floors of the cafe stay chatty until the place closes at 1, so don't expect to get work done if you're sitting up there.
google avatar

Lauren R.

Yelp
Ok, so yes this place does get very busy and yes it has got a hipster vibe going - but on the plus side it has a very decently priced fixed price brunch on the weekend and there's free wifi! What's not to love! The decor is pretty cool and you'll feel pretty relaxed hanging out on one of the couches. The food comes out in a steady stream (although we did have to remind them about our baked eggs after a 40 minute no show) but they did let us take our last course (brownies!) to go. Put it on your list if you're a cycling enthusiast or if you enjoy a big brunch!
google avatar

Kristiana W.

Yelp
Great avocado toast... decent coffee. Fast service ...cool vibe. Location is even better at night tons of bars nearby.
google avatar

Azuzena G.

Yelp
Loved this place. It has tables for your laptops and it also has couches for you to sit and read and enjoy a nice pastery and coffee. Free Wifi !

Charlene C.

Yelp
Simply amazing! Very good coffee and tasty food! I'm glad I made it here on my last day in Madrid.
google avatar

Alison L.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in Madrid! It's great as a cafe in the morning (yay! cafe con leche) and bar at night (yay! gin and tonic)! It's in a great location with tons of shopping, bars, and restaurants close by. Like most places in Madrid, they have a great breakfast menu. I would highly recommend coming here for a nice drink, night or day!
google avatar

Arunima D.

Yelp
The decor of the cafe is beautiful and has a nice vibe overall. As is the case with most places around this area, it is a pricy place. We had shredded beef tacos here and the chef came out of the kitchen to recommend it to us, which was somewhat funny but cool. You can come here and work on your laptop if you wish to as they have big desks with enough power sockets and comfy chairs.
google avatar

Barbara M.

Yelp
Really neat cafe perched on a happening corner with tons of shops and cool eateries around. Super nice and welcoming staff (some speak English, if that's your thing). Has great cafe and beer and delicious food. Perfect hideout for an afternoon.
google avatar

Annie S.

Yelp
La Bicicleta is a very trendy and modern looking cafe in Madrid . I really loved the design and layout of the place and the selection of coffee, tea , drinks and food looked quite promising . As we didn't order any food can't comment on this however the coffee could have been better and as they mixed some up with our order it took a bit ! After all an ok ish experience ! I would go back and give it another chance as they seemed quite busy during our time being and as said before I loved the design of the place !
google avatar

Krista A.

Yelp
We got a cappuccino and caffe americano, and both got the turkey and ham grilled croissants... all delicious and wonderful!! Great atmosphere, menus in multiple languages. It was our favorite breakfast of our entire Spain/Italy trip!! Drooling thinking about it now. Would literally go back to Madrid specifically for that croissant!
google avatar

Kathy H.

Yelp
This is the busiest cafe ever!! It's so crowded and the latte is pricier than others. Although the setting was nice (from chatty groups to students), coffee was nice, and staff was alright, I didn't return at all. I didn't want to deal with the hassle of finding a seat. What's nice was that they keep the students/laptops in Wi-Fi zones.
google avatar

Alison C.

Yelp
UGH La Bicicleta is obnoxious. I think it suffers because of its trendy reputation, it feels like they don't have to try hard because they know they're popular. We've often sworn to never go back, because it's ALWAYS packed with ex-pats (not that the ex-pats are the problem, it's the always being packed), and the service isn't very good. Some servers are friendly but I've had many that were stuck-up and hostile. Also, I've literally sat there doing work for an hour without being attended. The food itself isn't bad but they have a lot of schedule restrictions on their menu and it's pricey. Also, it only happened during my first few visits but in the area by the couches there would be a lot of flies, I had to constantly keep covering my food or they would be all over it! The wifi doesn't often work well and so if you're there to do work you're just sitting in a noisy environment trying to get on the internet. To hang out socially, it's not a bad place, it's got ambiente. But if you're actually trying to get actual work done, I would recommend Gorila or maybe.. any other place.
google avatar

Brigitte N.

Yelp
Best local coffee shop in Madrid! Well I'm a little bias because I haven't been to many in Madrid but the coffee is amazing (really strong) and the people who work there are so friendly. This place is not touristy at all which I loved. I got the bonbom coffee which was so good and a croissant. Wish I was in Madrid longer so that I could go back here!
google avatar

Jose G.

Yelp
Cozy place and quite nice food, however disappointed as they asked me to stop using my laptop as it's not allowed to use it on weekends to prevent people staying there for long
google avatar

Virginia Y.

Yelp
The owner here is superb! He really values his customers and obtaining feedback. I ordered the matcha latte with a pincho tortilla. Moments later after my drink and food arrived, the owner came up to me to ask me for my opinion on the drink. Honestly at the first run, it tasted like an iced matcha tea, the latte flavor was missing. He remade the drink for me and added agave which was much better. He gave me a third one for free which was a different type of cream. He gave my friend a free cold chocolate ( probably cause he was jealous of all the treatment I was getting haha) My favorite was definitely the agave. I really really appreciate the effort placed in perfecting their drink. Apparently I was the first person ever to order it, the barista said it was quite special for him when he made it. I definitely developed a soft spot for this place and if I ever come back to Madrid I will make this my first stop! I highly recommend this place, they're dedicated people who want to improve their product.
google avatar

Matteo L.

Yelp
The other reviews tell anything important. So I just want to underline once more: Bicicleta is a very cool, hip and cozy Bar to go in the heart of Malasana. It is perfect for working as there is fast Wi-Fi access, enough space and other people working around you. Very urban athmosphere, great interior design and just a cool place to be!
google avatar

Brandon K.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and perfect to stop and catch up on email or with friends. Bigger than it looks from the outside. I sat up front with a good view out the window. Friendly staff.

Jamie D.

Yelp
Very friendly and very quick! No problems with only speaking English. Plenty of space! Not crowded, but i was there first thing at 10am.
google avatar

Sacha P.

Yelp
They advertise their brunch from 12. To 4. But they stop serving it at 2 because they "don't have enough eggs". The waitress isn't even sorry about it. They should be more organized.
google avatar

Ricardo H.

Yelp
Hard to tell if this is an expat hangout or very hip Spanish bar. Right in the heart of malasaña, La Bicicleta offers something for everyone. Personally I've only ever been here for beers but I hear that they're food is amazing as well. A party atmosphere Thursday to Friday, La Bici is also very lively during the week. Loud enough to socialize but also calm enough to read or study. Overall a trendy, social cafe definitely recommended.
google avatar

Gabriela G.

Yelp
So far this has been the best coffee shop I have been to. In love with the atmosphere, the staff is the sweetest, the coffees i recommend the Bombón i'm already on my 3rd one as i type this.....the food is incredible..you won't regret this place
google avatar

Peter T.

Yelp
Excellent coffee, food and service. La Bicicleta is a casual cycling cafe and allows co-working so it's popular with MacBook wielding hipsters. This makes it the perfect place to relax for an afternoon. The neighbourhood is very funky and the cafe blends into the local scene. The food is also very fresh and our sandwich came with a lovely crisp side salad. The brownie came with icecream which is a small touch, but shows that they care about food and their customers. The coffee was crisp, rounded and mellow. The milk in the flat white could have been slightly better textured but it still tasted good. Overall an excellent cafe and worth visiting.

Susie Q.

Yelp
Went to this establishment with my own reusable coffee cup to get a latte to-go and was told that they could not serve me in that cup because they wanted people walking around with the disposable cups that said their name on it... disappointed that they do not support efforts to be more sustainable.
