On the Grid : La Boîte à Café - Café Mokxa

"The place that restored coffee’s badge of honor in Lyon. Their small terrace is located at the crossing point where those who are walking up into the Pentes smile wincingly at those are coming down. Mokxa also serves delicious sandwiches and desserts." - Ghislain Mirat

Google
Great vibe and delicious cafe latte, chai tea and scones! We have really enjoyed including this cafe into our daily routine here in Lyon! Great service, coffee, and vibe!

Google
I highly recommend the banana bread!! That was a winner! For the coffee - unfortunately not my favorite bean profile and I find it too sharp and sourish. But I really want to compliment the barista, who was really busy but took the liberty to show me patience and kindness when I had questions. Keep smiling and the great work!! 🌟

Came across La Boite à Café while visiting Lyon for a weekend. I was in deperate need of some good coffee and luckily for me that is exactly what they gave me. I got the flat white with oat milk, which was very creamy, well foamed up and exactly how strong I like them. There were a bunch of locals in the shop chatting and working on their laptops. The ambiance was very cozy and welcoming. This is really the perfect place to feed your caffeïne addiction.

Google
I enjoy their flat white and pairing it with a savoury scone - I especially like their cheddar-pepper one that has a spicy twist! There is a big terrace if you want to chat with a friend, but it is also possible to work indoors :) Note: there is a fidelity card!

I used to order coffee beans from them when I lived in France years ago, and I was so happy to see them still standing at the same spot! Always great coffee.

Google
We got lemon scones and coffee, and they were amazing! The scone was very soft and it was delicious. They don’t have a lot of space inside, but it is well decorated. We went in the summer, so the terrace is also nice. Good service & they speak English

Google
Had a flat white here, the coffee has a punch to it. I really like the taste and atmosphere of the place. Even though the place is crowded the waitresses where rapid. Coming from Barcelonas coffee scene I would only expect a bit more coffee for the price. But the prices seem reasonable for the location. I would suggest getting the extra shot in the coffee for the additional 50 cent. But that's just because I'm a big coffee drinker.

Google
Very friendly and competent baristas. Flat white, chai latte and matcha were all excellent. Super chill space also with outdoor seating in a cool part of Lyon.

Yelp
A cute little cafe with friendly people. I had a cappuccino, 3 Euros. It was very sweet - I like it a bit more with depth, but it was an excellent cup nonetheless. * There's a WiFi, but when I tried to connect, it said "not available/ will open again on Monday"..I visited on Sunday afternoon.

Yelp
We came across this café as we were exploring the back streets of Lyon. Compared to other cafes in the area, this one has a great location (occupies a corner of a pedestrian plaza). The interior has a clean design as well as ample amount of day light. The staff is super friendly (English speaking) and the café itself doesn't feel commercial or touristy at all. A great place to kick-back, relax and people watch.

Yelp
Mokxa take 2! This was the second location of this coffee chain that we visited in Lyon. This one was just as pleasant and as tasty as the first.

Yelp
La Boite in a nutshell is a hidden gem located in a little square, with perfectly blended espresso drinks and a view, plus free wifi! What's not to love? This place was everything you expect in a small coffee shop and more. I love their attention to detail in their process and their lattes. They are delicious and the handcrafted attention shows. Sometimes there is a wait here, since it can get especially crowded with small space like this, but for me it has always been worth a short wait for an exceptional latte. They have some homemade croissants and pastries as well to go with your coffee, they all looked great but the only one I tried was the normal croissant which was perfect. This place was not easy to find! Bit of a hike from the subway, but the closest stop would be Croix Paquet. Imagine all of the windy, cobblestone roads you picture France to have, then at the top, small, boutique coffee shop over looking the main area, included outdoor patio seating for a nice day, or a small cozy indoor area for rainy days/laptop work. This place is heavily frequented by locals, so don't expect them to speak English at all. Learn a couple french words and you will be golden. Also you pay at the end once you finish, so don't try to pay when you order or they will look at you odd. Overall excellent little coffee shop in Lyon which I loved, and will be back next time I am in Lyon for sure!

Yelp
Great atmosphere! Muffins are excellent as well as hot chocolates. Service is a bit slow. The server is rude and seemed to have forgotten how to smile Good experience overall !

Yelp
The rating average for this place bears no relation to what I actually found. It's a pretty unremarkable coffee shop. I can't decide whether the service was amateurish or just provincial. Regardless, it wasn't amateurish in a charming way or provincial in a warm and friendly way. The carrot cake was 'correct' and the coffee was fine. I didn't go back during my visit to Lyon even though I was staying only a few blocks away. You know, if it had a 3 or 3.5 rating, I might not be so critical, but seeing such a high rating and all the glowing reviews, I was expecting something better...

Yelp
Great location to start - at the corner of a hip part of the hill and prime people watching for the lounger. The staff is friendly enough and understand and speak enough English to describe the coffee. I had the French press Columbian that was a good three cups and with a slice of banana bread. Extremely affordable prices, especially considering the quality. There's a reason why this place has so many reviews! Don't miss it whrn you're in Lyon.

Yelp
I think all the other yelpers, have pretty much summed this place up to a T. I was really impressed by this little café in an alleyway in the back streets. The initial thoughts, of "oh no, where is she taking me!" did cross my mind but I was pleasantly surprised. Mokxa offers strong coffee (ask for extra lait, if you prefer more Western latte style coffee) that anyone would love- coffee snob or not, free wifi and a sunny little street courtyard area which is a great opportunity to people watch or read a old favourite. The staff are dedicate to making you an A+++ coffee. What's not to love?

Yelp
I think Monique and the other Yelpers have hit upon all the main points about Café Mokxa, but with my freshly inked 'loyalty card', I have to say I am very impressed. This is a coffee temple disguised as a clean, welcoming and uncluttered cafe. I went back again today after my initial visit yesterday with Madame V, and it was worth the slog through the rain. After being cheekily reprimanded by co-owner/dedicated barista and New Zealand transplant Rosamund for uttering the words 'regular coffee' in her presence, I've started on what is sure to be a long love affair with this place. Café Mokxa is seriously dedicated to an artisanal approach to coffee, from the selection of the beans, to the weekly roasting, variety of preparation methods and most importantly, customer education. These guys are passionate about what they do, and fortunately, want to share it with us. A++

Yelp
I go to Mokxa (OK, La Boîte à Café) about once a week, first of all to get amazing beans for at home, and second to sit and have a nice coffee (filtered, or Aeropress, or French press - they offer a lot of options) and maybe a pastry. The people working there are are super nice. As an example: yesterday they sold me coffee even though they were closed for renovations. Perhaps it was the hint of desperation in my voice. There are often English-speaking people hanging out, and/or people working on laptops. If you want to have a coffee in a hip, international place, or if you want to get great beans and coffee paraphernalia, Mokxa is the place to be.

Yelp
This place is {apparently} where the millenials go to enjoy their coffee. This cafe had great music, vibes, coffee and wifi. It is a bit small, but that's the European way. Although be warned, wifi is only available on the weekDAY. Their flat white is fantastic. I will absolutely be coming back!

Yelp
Great coffee - a gem of a place, off the beaten track but worth the detour. A nice break after the museum tour.

Yelp
Friendly place and great coffee (espresso from Rwanda worth 5*, the flat white also spot on). Great find in a city where good coffee is certainly not abundant (yet)

Yelp
Great location, pour-over coffee, and sandwiches! What more could you want? I recommend the café filtre et le sandwich poulet

Yelp
Great coffee shop, an amazing find here in Lyon. Try their chai latte, you won't be disappointed! :) :)

Yelp
I am the opposite of a coffee snob. I was just explaining that to Anna B during our incredibly pleasant morning break here - Stumptown and Blue Bottle are great but the techniques and varieties of coffee confuse me more than anything else. This coffee shop has it all - the complicated coffee for the connaisseurs and the pleasant ambiance for me. It even gave me a little taste of home, in a way. You can have your coffee to stay or to go, the spot is adorable with a few tables outside and comfy inside, the cappuccino was magnificent and I can't wait to come back and try the cakes/pastries. Free wifi? You will definitely see me curled up in a corner with the telltale remains of cake crumbs and a cappuccino mousse moustache as I have found the perfect spot to get some work done outside of the house!

Yelp
Lovely place! Great coffees and you even have the option to order a big can of coffee on the table. The outside terras is nice and cosy. Also the service seems really nice.

Yelp
Very good espresso. Nice blend of African beans and you can taste the subtleties of the coffee. A bit out of the way for me but worth the walk for sure

Yelp
great coffee & i was impressed to see the dirty chai on their menu. this place is a good pick for any americans like me -- nostalgic for the kind of café we're used to back home but loath to set foot in a starbucks. my only gripe is that it's tiny inside and thus cramped and not super cozy.

Yelp
Great huge coffee with pleasant servers and a diverse group, with a lot of foreigners, who come here. Have always had good experiences here.

Yelp
Loved the fresh yogurt! The hot chocolate was great, too. Nice atmosphere and nice staff!

Yelp
I really want to love this place since it's the only "real" coffee shop in Lyon and I love the decor, concept and location but the coffee just isn't that great. I do like that they're open early so you can get a coffee on the way to work, and their cake is good. The servers range from friendly to a bit pretentious. So the coffee... the espresso is very strong. For someone who drinks their coffee black it's just too tart, almost bitter, not sure if it's the roasting process or something else. The other thing is that, even though this is France and they might care more about the coffee, it would be nice if they made more of an effort with their soy drinks. The soy capuccino isn't up to standard, the soy milk half curdles in your coffee. Changing the brand or using a real soy blender would probably help and certainly convince me and other vegan drink lovers to go there more often.

Yelp
It's not quite 100% French, but I kind of love the fusion of French and American styles of coffee. The chocolate frappe was great!

Yelp
So delicious! Was really missing my favorite coffee shops in Los Angeles and this place saved the day.
