I don't know where tourists got the idea that French cuisine had to be expensive, but this restaurant certainly shows food lovers who's boss. The tables are wooden. Some are graffitied. The portions are generous, just like in a countryside kitchen.
La Cantine de Belleville is filled with trendy hipsters, but it hasn't fallen prey to the jack-up-the-prices-to-stay-relevant theory. For 14 euros you can eat a three course meal. My favorite: rabbit terrine for the starter, rumsteak with homemade Bearnaise and gratin dauphinois for the main, and tiramizu for a desert. 14 euros. Boom. Grab a"picher" of wine, which is fully drinkable ... for 20 euros, you and your friends have had a fantastic night. You're not going to find a bay leaf gracing the breast of a magret de canard, but you will find a magret de canard with a salad to accompany French-style home fries (NB: you can substitute any side for any other side, free of charge. The gratin dauphinois over fries should not be overlooked).
Come for the rustic feel, the friendly wait staff (En France?! Mais c'est pas possible!) and the basic but hearty, tasty food. All of your favorite French dishes are on the menu, and although I can't confirm it, I'm pretty sure a jolly fat chef with rosy cheeks is in the back, singing Edith Piaf as he cooks well into the night.
