On the Grid : Casa de la Amistad

"La Casa de la Amistad (Friendship House) is one of those Vedado mansions you walk past that you’re not sure you can enter. Well you can. It’s been refurbished as a State venue used for events with foreign groups, and as a cafe/bar on most days. There’s a nice patio to sit outside and get some work done (without wifi), or head there on a weekend afternoon to hang out with locals listening to raggaeton and eating an inexpensive lunch." - Noah Friedman-Rudovsky

When my husband and I first moved to SB we were thrilled to come across the support and kindness from this center, but so much has changed in one year. After visiting their food pantry two times over the past year, we have been denied access since January. We have asked why this could be, they keep saying that it just hasn't been restocked and won't answer any further questions. I recently requested their help on getting financial aid to pay some bills in the house, after talking with a very rude staff member through the phone who poorly explained the application process, she ended up telling me "Lady, if you don't understand, I won't explain things to you" I ended up having to talk to someone else to start the application. Long story short, they've lost personal documents that I've given them, they ask me to restart the process every month, I have not received help AT ALL from these people. If I don't qualify for the aid, I get it, but I wish they would just tell me that instead of making me lose my time.

I called to volunteer at la casa to see what can I do to help the immigrant community in the south bend area and all I got was we don’t have any volunteer work now! I know la casa since the late 90s and back then they helped the immigrants more than now. What’s the point of you guys moving to a bigger building if there is nothing to help the immigrant community! I’m very disappointed with la casa.

This community is amazing and reaches out to everyone. Thank you for your service. When you walk in you feel the love. This place is rich with history. Thank you for all you do and continue to do. Helping family is hard times and making the community stronger together is amazing. We need more of this! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

As a child I spent some time there one summer. Best summer I've ever had. They have a good after school program, keeping kids off the streets and doing homework. The Girl Scouts would meet there, I don't know if they do still. In the basement they run a food pantry.

If I could rate them a zero I would. I need help to start my husbands immigration application and they never called me back. I called and they kept telling me to call back in 2 weeks. Ive been calling since March of this year!
