"Its official name is El Anciano Rey de los Viños, “The Ancient King of Wines,” but everyone knows this Madrid restaurant as La Casa de las Torrijas, “The House of French Toast.” Torrijas, stale bread soaked in milk or other liquid, dipped in eggs, fried in olive oil and sprinkled with sugar, is a dessert typically associated with Semana Santa, a spring holiday in Madrid. But this restaurant is one of only a handful of places in town that has traditionally served the dish year-round, something it’s been doing since 1907. At La Casa de las Torrijas, the eponymous dish takes two forms. Torrijas de leche, the version most closely associated with Semana Santa in Madrid, are soaked in milk, emerging from the kitchen with a paper-thin crispy exterior and an interior that’s almost omelet-like in its softness and richness. An order is served sprinkled with sugar supplemented with a pinch of cinnamon, and is drizzled with a honey-like syrup given a pleasant fragrance via citrus zest. Torrijas de viño are soaked in red wine and are drizzled in a fragrant, slightly tart, purple-hued wine syrup. Either of them is likely to make you reassess your mom’s French toast. Know Before You Go During Semana Santa, torrijas are traditionally paired with a glass of sweet, fortified muscat wine." - Austin Bush, Xavixavir

Great place to try Torrijas, a typical sweet made from bread very typical during Easter although in this place you can find them all the year. They also have tapas, vermouth with aperitivo Gila… Very popular so it can be challenging to find a spot for lunch or dinner.

Torrijas are an Easter treat, but at the namesake Casa de las Torrijas, you can find them all year round. Here, they are beautifully custardy on the inside and crispy on the outside. You can choose between two traditional flavours - milk, which has a close likeness to French toast; and wine, which is a bit like eating the same but soaked in a wine jus, just like you would have with poached pears. As you would expect, they do their name proud here. It's a traditional bar/café ambiance and often a bit hectic. Around Easter, it's packed both to sit in and to go, but if you choose an off-peak time of day wisely (outside the dessert / "merienda" rush), you will find a spot no problem. At just under €4, it's cheaper than most restaurant dessert offerings and worth eloping for 😉

Tried to go here around lunch time and it was extremely busy so we came back at an off time around 4 pm. At this time there were quite a bit of tables open so we were able to sit quickly. After we ordered 2 Torrijas with milk and my god these were one of the best desserts we've eaten in our lives. It had a nice sugary crunch but on the inside it was nice and gooey. The taste was super flavorful and I could definitely eat a ton of these. Crazy they don't have a lot of well know Torrija places.

My friend recommended me this place and let me tell you, they have amazing torrijas, which they are famous for. I am not used to eating them as a dessert and I never believed they are gonna be this good. I will go back to eat them again, I have tried both with milk and wine I prefer ones with wine but with milk are so fudgy inside and crunchy outside that there is no way you are not gonna like them. People that are working there are friendly and nice.

What a place. Love the vibes and decor of it all. Came recommended from our walking tour guide and we could not agree more. We have the set lunch and menu and every taste great and at a fraction of the price. Definitely recommend dropping by here.

Traditional bar in the very centre of the city, celebrated for their torrijas and probably great for drinking as well. We went for more dinnery areas of their menu and not everything was spectacular, including the quite long wait and difficulty finding the interest of the staff. But after all we left full for not much, in the very center, so it ended well.

We came here as part of a tapas tour. We got the fried potatoes with eggs on top. Can’t remember the name and the dessert. It was bread soaked in milk. Absolutely delicious. Loved it. It tastes so much better than how it looks! Also, this place has been here more than 100 years!

We really enjoyed the experience there. Very local and the person in charge was very friendly and helpful. Not very touristy which we prefer. Food was very good and their torrigas was unique and fresh. I would recommend this place if you want to try truly local restaurants.

Yelp
The venue is antique and quaint. The food was good: -sweet wine torrija (torrija de vino dulce): tasty but quite sweet as it was coated in granulated sugar. Also, it's much squishier/soaked than french toast in the US. -tortilla de patata: had a good amount of onion with the potato filling. portion size was a good size, heavy and filling for the price. -potatoes 2 sauces (patatas dos salsas): with aioli (basically mayo with some garlic flavor- too oily for my liking) and the "bravas" sauce (flavorful red sauce which tasted of chorizo but no meat in it). Very good portion for the price- 2 good eaters can share.

Yelp
I came here because torrijas are a popular Spanish dessert and I love bread pudding or french toast. I ordered a torrija con leche for only 3 euros. They put it in a nice takeout container and it was still very warm. The portion was huge and it was very tasty. It was not too sweet and worth the walk to get once. The restaurant is not super crowded but definitely worth going if you are craving a torrija!

Yelp
Came here on a food tour while in Madrid in 2017 nd when I came back on a student tour this was the place for one of our dinners. I was a huge fan of this place and their torrijas. We had a lamb stew as well and it was full of flavor and so tender. The wait staff were super friendly and willing to answer any questions and got the food out quickly. I really love this place and if in Madrid in the future this is a place I would frequent. Right off the main areas of Madrid near the Plaza del Sol and a must visit when in the area for a place where the locals eat. YOU MUST VISIT!

Yelp
We happened in on a Friday afternoon, right after the large crowd left. We sat and were greeted with a lovely smile from the female proprietor, who was very kind in helping us to order with our broken Spanish. We ordered white wine and small beer, which was served with the most delicious little hot dogs / sausages. The meat croquettas were outstanding served with a small salad. The torrijas we picked were dulche de leche and cafe liquor; both were scrumptious.

Yelp
Great place. Very local looking. Food was amazing. Be prepared to speak Spanish thought. Or at least try.
