"Tapas at La Casa del Abuelo This tavern-based tapas bar in Madrid was founded in 1906 and fiercely carries out the tapas tradition. It has had many famous patrons, including Andy Warhol, and has a great wine selection as well as beers to go along with the famous garlic prawns and langoustines."

I ate here. The food was above the average, i took some sea food, it was great, especially the aioli sauce. The only downside to the food was the amount of fat, I think it is traditional, but after a meal here, you have to walk few km. But overall it was a great experience.

Overall it was ok, nothing special . for the price I paid, 51 euros. , it could have been more delicious. the meal I had yesterday at Casa Toni was much more delicious for my taste.

Update a year later: I still like this place, it offers a pretty authentic old Spanish taverna feel, the food is 100% Spanish, their paellas (rice dishes or “arroces”) are very good, their “gambas al ajillo” are also good, their own house wine is very good and their prices are very reasonable.

Gambas were amazing. Peppers were good. Octopus was ok. Highly recommended for quick tapas.

We went to a few of their locations as we loved the garlic shrimp, but this was our least favorite. As you can see the food doesn’t look the same in the photos as the other locations.

The food is tasty, the location very good, it is a typically spanish restaurant. But it is touristy and pricey.

The gazpacho was great. Everything else was fine, but not GREAT. We had the gazpacho, tortilla, gambas al ajillo, patatas mixtas, and fried calamari (our least favorite and most expensive - we literally left it all except the ring we tried). The atmosphere is charming, and the service was great. Wish the food would have been, too.

Tried several dishes and all were delicious (peppers, chicken meatballs, patatas bravas). Sangria also very very good. Too bad the terrace has no shadow

Yelp
We came for lunch to meet friends who like us were visiting Madrid, what a coincidence! This place was perfect. It was relaxed but really pretty. We enjoyed catching up since hadn't each other for years. We ordered Gambas al ajonillo, chulapo prawns & marinated tope shark! Shark? Yes. We are adventurous eaters & this was the place to be. The server explained well & the menu was easy to read. It was very tasty & not at all what we thought. The shrimp & prawns were cooked just right, soft & right to the bite. We had sangria which was really refreshing on a hot Summer day. Loved this place.

Yelp
I dined here because my friend mentioned they had the best Gambas-Not! I tried their Iberico Croquetas and the Gambas in EVOO. Nothing special... The place was near Mango, so it was a convenient location after going through all the shops in Goya.

Yelp
What a disappointing experience. We started with champignon and jamon croquettes, that tasted of old, low quality oil. Next dish was shrimp with garlic paste - super slim and small. We followed up with shrimp and potatoes with egg on top - everything absolutely drenched in oil. And the cherry on top was that the shrimp was not deveined. Unfortunately, 1 star.

Yelp
Very cute spot for coffee in the morning! It was nice to be able to sit outside and enjoy the people watching from the street. The service was slow but the waiter was polite and helpful. We enjoyed our coffees. It was very affordable!

Yelp
Stopped by here to get the garlic shrimp and grilled shrimp. These were the most highly recommended dishes here and it didn't disappoint. The shrimp was very fresh

Yelp
Loved La Casa del Abuelo. We went to the original one. They have several in Madrid, but the Staff in the original was outstanding. The gentleman was very friendly. Made us feel like at home. The gambas al ajillo, to die for. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Great food and service and prices. Really glad we chanced upon this place during the rainstorm last night.

Yelp
We ordered the roasted potatoes and shrimp croquetas, took forever and arrived cold. I had to ask for a menu and our waiters response was that he assumed we only wanted coffee. We ordered the food and didn't get any bread; which our server noticed and offered to us after we got our food. It isn't a big deal but it's sad to see everyone else get treated better and served faster than you despite arriving first. Next time we'll do take out and avoid the hassle.

Yelp
The service is good, fast and friendly. The terrace area is nice and spacious. The gazpacho is delicious ! I also ordered a tuna salad - ensalada de ventresca but it was a bit too salty. Next time I will try to order the other tuna salad with the large tomatoes! I would recommend this place for a casual lunch.
