The Best Hotel Breakfasts We Ate This Year

"I could eat this hotel breakfast, desayuno chapín, every single day and be satisfied: Scrambled eggs cooked with peppers and onions, a small ramekin filled with black beans, a generous heap of fried plantains, and a cube of delicious, crumbly queso fresco, served with warm tortillas and a juice of the day."

What I Packed for a Long Weekend in Guatemala

"La Casa del Mundo was truly the highlight of the trip—we opted for a suite, which had three beds and a charming little patio where we would sit and read in the mornings and sip cocktails in the afternoons. The property is only accessible by boat, so we hopped on a ferry in Panajachel, the main hub visitors enter through to get to the many small towns around the lake, and zipped over in about 20 minutes. If stairs are not in the cards, this property is not for you—it's built into a cliffside (Lake Atitlán is in a massive volcanic crater, after all), and has a maze of winding stairs leading up to the casita-style rooms, front office and restaurant, and numerous outdoor seating areas, each with their own mix of hammocks, lawn chairs, and chaise lounge chairs. At the hotel, we rented kayaks and paddleboards to take onto the lake, and could jump (or walk) in from various points around the base of the property. Stairs aside, it provided the ultimate relaxation we needed after the challenging hike up the Acatenango Volcano. While I'm happy we left during the afternoons to visit more of the lakeside towns, I could have easily spent a few days doing a whole lot of nothing right there at La Casa del Mundo."

Oh my goodness— I don’t even think I can begin to describe just how beautiful and amazing this place is. First, every place you look is just breathtaking. The location is amazing with beautiful volcano views. The water is a beautiful blue. The flowers and plants are so well-taken care of. The price is so incredibly reasonable— we would have paid much more to stay at a place so special. ||We loved the food and the variety of options. The breakfast was great, and we especially enjoyed the smoothies. ||The staff were so incredibly kind. They offer to help you take your bags from the dock up the hill. We want to give a shoutout to Jared at the front desk for being super helpful and for going above and beyond to make our stay special. The kindness and hospitality here is just unmatched. ||We got massages while we were there— and those were delightful. Hearing the soft waves of the lake in the background made it even more enjoyable and peaceful. ||We just adore this place and cannot recommend it enough. We so badly want to go back ASAP.

We chose a day pass ($6.50 USD) as all the rooms were booked and really enjoyed Casa del Mundo! It’s breathtaking, truly. Because we had a day pass, we didn’t have anywhere to store our bags but we left them out on a terrace and had no issues. The food was amazing, esp the breakfast! It was a bit cloudy when we went but we still had so much fun relaxing, eating, exploring, and doing a little swimming. I would recommend getting a room if there’s availability as I would stay here for multiple days!!

Beautiful spaces, garden nooks, and platforms to swim. The service team was great. The food is ok, kind of expensive for what it is. You’re definitely paying for location, location, location. One thing to note— it’s not very “Guatemalan.” It’s very western/European with lots of uppity resort-type tourists— which is a vibe, just not a very cultural or authentic experience. Definitely worth checking out though.

Absolutely beautiful place, but had a really unfortunate experience with bed bugs. My friend woke up with bites on the first day, and we visually saw the bugs on checkout day. The hotel was as accommodating as they possibly could be, and were able to wash all our clothes for us. Unfortunately it just doesn’t seem like they had the resources for any sort of immediate thorough fumigation/heat treatment(not sure if this was done after we left), but they did seem to take it seriously. Just be super careful and check the sheets/mattresses! This was room #27.

Probably one of the most beautiful places on earth. You absolutely have to visit it to fully understand, the pictures really don’t do it justice. A little piece of paradise perched on a cliff above a stunningly beautiful volcanic lake. The rooms - gorgeous, the service - impeccable, the staff - phenomenal. Casa del Mundo is undoubtedly the highlight of any trip to Guatemala. I will be back.

I am unfortunately writing a bad review when the hopes were so high for this place. The property itself is gorgeous and the staff are friendly. That’s really the only saving grace. We were put in a room that was a few hundred stairs from the dock straight up the mountainside without warning. If we were an elderly couple or had a disability it would have never been doable. My wife and I are physically active and in relatively good shape but the climb was more than unexpected with 60 pounds worth of luggage each. Not only was the climb bad but the service for food and beverages was insane. Now being from the states I always expect service to be a little slower simply based on culturally differences. But when it takes 45 minutes everytime I order a coke and a water it becomes a bit ridiculous. The food portions were not all that great and the flavor on most dishes (minus the garlic shrimp and enchiladas) was not worth waiting for. The issue is you’re trapped there at certain times. We understood this going in but to overcharge and under season with long service times was unacceptable. I could have over looked this but something happened that drove us to writing this review. My wife was feeling ill at 11am. We came to get food so she could get something in her stomach before we left for the day. The issue was we got there between breakfast and lunch service. When we explained the situation to the host he said “ we can only do drinks. No food.” We asked if there was anything easy to even microwave or bring out cold just so she could feel better and his response was a flat “no” and he walked away. So we sat there for an extra hour. My wife’s head down on the table. And at noon after she looked at me with pain in her eyes he gave us menus with a smile. We were the only ones there. Placed an order immediately and it still took almost an hour for a quesadilla. We packed and left immediately after. Use caution when booking. You may need to bring your hiking boots, sticks, and a shaman. Extremely disappointed in a place designed for heart to give such a heartless experience.

This might be one of or THE most beautiful hotel I’ve stayed at. Walking around it and every corners amazed me. The view of the lake all around is amazing and waking up to my room’s view of the volcano was relaxing. The staff is so caring, professional and dedicated to serve you. It was really convenient to have the lanchas pick you up directly at their pond. Will definitely be back someday!

One of the best places we have stayed in! The facade is beautiful and the views of lake atitlan with volcanoes are hard to beat anywhere else around the lake It was the beautifully maintained garden well labeled and cared for that was my highlight. Waking up to the view, swimming in the lake; Guatemalan coffee and a diet restriction friendly menu were just a few more things that made the stay that much special. The staff was super helpful too. My only minor gripe is with the day pass users the common areas with hammocks get filled really quickly especially during our stay which was also the Holy Week in GT.
