12 Cheap Honeymoon Destinations That Feel Luxurious

"A remote cliffside hotel on Lake Atitlán accessible only by foot or boat, offering lakefront hot tubs and striking volcano views; its location makes it ideal for hiking between villages, taking boat tours, and making day trips to nearby markets for local crafts." - Evie Carrick Evie Carrick Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. The Best Hotel Breakfasts We Ate This Year

"I could eat this hotel breakfast, desayuno chapín, every single day and be satisfied: Scrambled eggs cooked with peppers and onions, a small ramekin filled with black beans, a generous heap of fried plantains, and a cube of delicious, crumbly queso fresco, served with warm tortillas and a juice of the day."

What I Packed for a Long Weekend in Guatemala

"La Casa del Mundo was truly the highlight of the trip—we opted for a suite, which had three beds and a charming little patio where we would sit and read in the mornings and sip cocktails in the afternoons. The property is only accessible by boat, so we hopped on a ferry in Panajachel, the main hub visitors enter through to get to the many small towns around the lake, and zipped over in about 20 minutes. If stairs are not in the cards, this property is not for you—it's built into a cliffside (Lake Atitlán is in a massive volcanic crater, after all), and has a maze of winding stairs leading up to the casita-style rooms, front office and restaurant, and numerous outdoor seating areas, each with their own mix of hammocks, lawn chairs, and chaise lounge chairs. At the hotel, we rented kayaks and paddleboards to take onto the lake, and could jump (or walk) in from various points around the base of the property. Stairs aside, it provided the ultimate relaxation we needed after the challenging hike up the Acatenango Volcano. While I'm happy we left during the afternoons to visit more of the lakeside towns, I could have easily spent a few days doing a whole lot of nothing right there at La Casa del Mundo."

The only positive thing about this place is the view – which you can easily enjoy from many cheaper spots in the area. The prices to stay here are extremely high, and absolutely nothing is included. You have to pay extra for food, and even the amenities like the hot tub or sauna must be booked and paid for separately. For what they charge, all you really get is a bed to sleep in. There’s nothing to do in the hotel itself or in the surrounding area. Overall, not worth the money.

The best hotel I’ve ever stayed at! The staff were so helpful and kind. The rooms were very clean and looked better than the pictures. The food was really good, and they had plenty of options for breakfast & lunch/dinner. Couldn’t have had a better experience, will be staying here again during our next visit to Guatemala!

Oh my goodness— I don’t even think I can begin to describe just how beautiful and amazing this place is. First, every place you look is just breathtaking. The location is amazing with beautiful volcano views. The water is a beautiful blue. The flowers and plants are so well-taken care of. The price is so incredibly reasonable— we would have paid much more to stay at a place so special. ||We loved the food and the variety of options. The breakfast was great, and we especially enjoyed the smoothies. ||The staff were so incredibly kind. They offer to help you take your bags from the dock up the hill. We want to give a shoutout to Jared at the front desk for being super helpful and for going above and beyond to make our stay special. The kindness and hospitality here is just unmatched. ||We got massages while we were there— and those were delightful. Hearing the soft waves of the lake in the background made it even more enjoyable and peaceful. ||We just adore this place and cannot recommend it enough. We so badly want to go back ASAP.

We chose a day pass ($6.50 USD) as all the rooms were booked and really enjoyed Casa del Mundo! It’s breathtaking, truly. Because we had a day pass, we didn’t have anywhere to store our bags but we left them out on a terrace and had no issues. The food was amazing, esp the breakfast! It was a bit cloudy when we went but we still had so much fun relaxing, eating, exploring, and doing a little swimming. I would recommend getting a room if there’s availability as I would stay here for multiple days!!

Great view, stunning hotel, but I don’t recommend staying here for more than 1 night. Very small room, needs a boat ride to go to the more popular and fun towns. Public boats don’t operate after 5:30 if ur coming back from San Pedro so a lot of times you’re stuck with the mediocre food at the hotel and the hotel doesn’t allow u to bring outside food. The rooms are small, not AC’d, and a little bit leaking when it rained during our stay. Waking up in the morning and seeing the volcano is great though and I loved kayaking there.

Beautiful spaces, garden nooks, and platforms to swim. The service team was great. The food is ok, kind of expensive for what it is. You’re definitely paying for location, location, location. One thing to note— it’s not very “Guatemalan.” It’s very western/European with lots of uppity resort-type tourists— which is a vibe, just not a very cultural or authentic experience. Definitely worth checking out though.

Overall, the experience here was disappointing. I was definitely influenced by social media to stay here and I really wanted to love it. But the cons unfortunately outweighed the pros for me and I wouldn’t recommend staying here as a hotel guest. At most I’d recommend doing a day pass. Pros - Gorgeous views - Lots of great seating areas Cons - Experienced 5 power outages during my 3 night stay. No explanation or apologies were offered when I brought it up to the staff. It was shrugged off as if this happens regularly. - Walls were really thin so I could hear my neighbors very clearly. - The bathroom smelled badly of mildew and had mold growing in it. - Due to the location and timing of public boats (they don’t run late), I often found myself eating at the restaurant on property. The food was mediocre and overpriced ($20 for a bowl of Alfredo pasta). - I booked a cultural tour of a local town through the hotel and it was a glorified shopping trip for $55. Transportation was not included and the guide barely spoke English despite being advertised as a bi-lingual tour. - No fans or any kind of ventilation in the rooms. I didn’t expect AC but not having anything else made for some uncomfortable nights. And it definitely contributes to the bathroom issue mentioned above. They also don’t take credit card so at the end of my stay I had to Venmo my balance which was not to any kind of business account, rather an individual’s name which I find very odd as someone who has traveled to 39 countries. I would highly recommend paying in all cash as they use their own local conversion rate not the globally listed one.

Probably one of the most beautiful places on earth. You absolutely have to visit it to fully understand, the pictures really don’t do it justice. A little piece of paradise perched on a cliff above a stunningly beautiful volcanic lake. The rooms - gorgeous, the service - impeccable, the staff - phenomenal. Casa del Mundo is undoubtedly the highlight of any trip to Guatemala. I will be back.
