We had stayed at this resort several years ago and it had vintage charm but casita's needed renovation. We wanted a private pool like we had last time and rented one of the only ones that had been refreshed. The interior was nice and had two new bathrooms but sadly no tub. There was a fireplace but not sure if it was just for decoration? It would have been nice to have hooks in the bathroom ,vanity, desk or chair in our two bedroom Desert Willow casita. It did have a coffee maker, mini fridge and microwave. The interior was much nicer than the last time and update was nice.Pool area was not renovated but had new comfortable loungers but umbrellas were broken, tiles missing from pool and pool signs peeling off the walls. Lot’s of flies at the pool which I never experienced in the desert. There was an open area where there clearly should be a gate which was kind of creepy as we were in a bit of a remote spot which was quiet but it felt exposed. My husband blocked it with a deck chair turned on its side.|On our way down the mountain front desk left message there would be a very very brief scheduled power outage the next day and front desk told us upon check in it should be about one hour. It was from the power company and they must of known in advance of the 1:15 call I received when we were 30 minutes away from the resort. It turned out to be four hours then at 5:15 when we were about to go to dinner another power outage. We asked front desk for flashlights and the chef was at front desk. When my husband inquired if they had anything available as there was no breakfast, lunch and now no dinner he got a very nasty response from the chef. We had not eaten all day. This 40 acre resort does not serve breakfast nor lunch during the week which is not clearly stated on their website. There was a mini mart that was closed due to outage and only stays open till 11AM. Why could the staff have not gotten a muffin or something knowing about this outage for their guests. There are no kitchens just a mini fridge and lucky I had brought some cheese and crackers. One of the reasons you stay at a big resort is because you can dine there and not leave the resort. There is nothing nearby but a country club a few ? miles away. They were not even giving out water and we had to ask for flashlights. No back up generator in lobby nor candles. No offer for water or any assistance getting back to our place in the pitch dark.|Pool guy came next day at 9:30 and check out is 11 so no last minute dip in the pool. |No spa services during the week and only dinner offered.|We had dinner our first night we checked in and we found menu limited and pricy. We asked if there was a bar menu in the bar and it had I think 4 choices. Server was nice and we ordered from that limited menu but it was not great. It was pretty to sit outside with the lights but it was chilly and wish they had lit the big stone fireplace. Inside dining room was even colder. Coffee is $6.00 a cup and we are not talking a pot with a French press. I honestly do not mind paying extra in a resort but this and $26 for a plain wedge salad seemed excessive. |The staff needs to tell people they do not offer spa services, classes, breakfast or lunch during the week. Our second day there was no food period.|Since pool guy came we checked out early and stopped in mini mart but they only had a choice of muffin or a not appealing croissant. They had bagels and breakfast burrito on menu but said they had to throw everything out due to power outage so we needless to say checked out hungry. |Front desk lady was very nice and adjusted our bill. She knew about the chef and said he was known to be rude. Two other guests inquired about breakfast or lunch when I was checking out and were disappointed as well. Who wants to stay at a big resort and be lounging at the pool and wants to get dressed and drive 20 minutes or so to town for a meal? Nice main pool but not even drink service. For $450 a night I expected and hoped for a better experience. This is a cool historic hotel but it definitely needs some staff training and some TLC. I really like the ambience of this property and hope it regains its past glory.

I love this place, and we will definitely come back! It exceeded my expectations. You have to see it in person, because the photos don't do it justice. It's rustic chic! The rooms are sizable, the solid 1930s construction is still amazing, and the place is well kept. There's a lot of things to do on the property. We had a wonderful meal at the restaurant. All the staff were attentive. And of course you're out in beautiful stargazing country, and there are other things to do in the area. We will come back just to stay at this place!

My wife and I visited the property for the first time this past week. From the stunning lobby and lounge area, to the beautiful and spacious guest rooms (with a really comfortable bed), to the crystal clean pools, to the Fox Den Bar cocktails and food, this place hit all the right spots. We checked in on a Sunday night and had dinner in the Bistro. The dinner menu was a tad limited, but we visited out of season, so I wasn't surprised at that. The wine list, though? Wow! The food was great and the menu offered a little something for everyone. I even had a glass of Sauternes (iykyk) as a nightcap. The room we stayed in was a garden view room; much larger than your average hotel room and included a nice little patio out back. The patio wass perfect for morning coffee and evening wine and stargazing. The property was QUIET! It's hard to find any properties where there's not road noise, or music from the bar, or kids running amok. There were other people at the property, but I never heard them. The property itself was clean. I didn't find a single piece of errant trash, and all the grounds looked as though they had a crew of landscapers come through hourly to maintain its tidiness. There are 5 pools on the property, though we only used the pool next to the main lobby/restaurant/bar. The pool was crystal clear and there were plenty of seating options all around from lounges to cushioned chairs. We were able to order cocktails and food from the bar to take and enjoy poolside. We ate at the bar a couple times and had their burger, chips & guacamole, and buffalo wings. All of it was dleicious. My wife and I split the burger because it's big enough to do that. I can say, without reservation, it's one of the best burgers I've had. It was cooked to perfection over actual fire (the way God intended) and not on a flat top. And the fries were legit. Cocktails there aren't cheap, but I was never disappointed in the quality/quantity of the pour or the taste of the cocktail. Their liquor selection is good. We availed ourselves of the stargazing theater every night we were there. There's something incredibly relaxing about sitting in the desert and staring up at the night sky and La Casa Del Zorro gets that right. Plenty of chairs in a fenced off area to keep the "light noise" out made for the perfect stargazing experience for us. We checked out yesterday and drove home. Once I got home I realized I'd left my watch (a very, VERY nice watch that holds substantial monetary and sentimental value to me) in my room. I called the front office and, in a panic, asked if they could check our room for it. They called back less than 5 minutes later almost out of breath (I think they actually ran to the room and back) to tell me they had the watch and to ask if I'd like them to ship it to me. With a watch like that, it's not something one puts in the mail, so I told them I'd be driving back out to pick it up. Fortunately, we only live 1.5 hours away. I pulled up, walked in, was greeted by the front desk staff with a huge smile and my watch, and told, "Hope to see you and your lovely wife again soon." When my wife and I booked our trip out here, we were looking for a less expensive alternative to our usual Anniversary trip to our regular place in Palm Springs (rhymes with Schmingleside Inn). My wife is "between jobs" and, well, I'm "frugal." So, she stumbled onto this place. I've got to say, I'm so happy she did. This was our first trip out here, but I can promise it won't be our last.

I would rate the experience 5 of 5 but my phone app didn’t give me the option. This resort is a gem. Great location for star gazing, which is the reason we came. The star gazing grounds are wonderful and have ample seating. There are several pools to enjoy. The rooms are large and very comfortable. We had dinner at the restaurant and it was delicious. Mathew was our server and he was attentive, personable and professional. Great guy. We will be coming back very soon to enjoy another quick, and amazing get away.

We have been going to La Casa since 1993. It is a lovely resort in a wonderful location. Staff were excellent and went out of their way to accommodate us quickly. We had a deluxe poolside room (downstairs!) and it was a lot of fun. The night sky can be a wonder. Has La Casa del Zorro seen better days? Yes. Does it matter? No.

We loved the one of a kind resort and will come back again! This was our first visit. We were greeted at the front desk, restaurant, cafe, and even workers on the grounds with friendliness, kindness, and well organized information. The room was beautifully clean, spacious, with a very comfy bed & lovely linens, quality bath amenities, and tasteful decor. The pools were spotless and beautifully maintained. We really enjoyed using the one steps outside our room. Our little patio by the pool and by the stream were sweet! We were really touched with an offer of a free appetizer for our 45th Anniversary and truly surprised with a tasty dessert that said "Happy Anniversary." This was over the top service with a smile. Very thoughtful! Top notch hotel/resort experience!

We stayed here for two nights in Room 272 (all one bedroom casitas were booked) and the room was very nice, spacious and beautifully furnished with lovely antique furniture, a small corner loveseat that seats three, a leather ottoman, nice artwork, an elegant & roomy bathroom with luxury towels and pool towels, as well. Although the TV was not working or the heater (temperatures dropped on our second night due to wind storm) we called the front desk and they sent Chayce, who was very helpful, courteous and friendly and swapped out the TV and made some adjustments to the electrical panel to assure we were getting heat (something not often called for in Borrego!). ||I will say I was a bit taken aback at the poor condition of the pool area, though, next to yoga studio (reason for 4 stars vs. 5). In the past this area was kept in tip top shape. The cushions were dirty and the straps were torn, the curtains on the cabana were torn and ripped, the tile in the smaller pool was badly corroded. Maybe it’s the end of the season and the resort does not want to spend the money to fix it at this time or maybe the pool is being managed under separate contract? ||By the way, the smaller pool was quite warm (heated) while the larger lap pool was not. The front desk said neither pool was heated. Both were still comfortable to enter in late spring. ||We had breakfast at the Fox Bistro and everything was perfect (good food and service). We liked the addition of the little internet cafe (Casa Cafe & Market), too.||I thought it was a nice bonus to offer free yoga classes (although we didn’t take) and I liked the self check out feature, as well. There’s no doubt this is the nicest & classiest place to stay in Borrego. The resort is so beautiful with an abundant of amenities. We have been coming here for a decade - often for special family occasions- and look forward to our next stay!

Google
A spontaneous trip to Borrego Springs from San Diego turned my guy and I to this AMAZING gem. Such a great experience. Laura at the front desk made our evening even more fantastic. |Our room was literally what dreams are made of and wish we could’ve stayed another night! |What really made our stay was the Stargazing Theater and private access to the pool and spa. |Cannot wait to visit again and will recommend to all I know!

Yelp
Beautiful historic inn in the heart of the Anza Borrego desert. Classic Spanish architecture. Great rooms. Great food. Casitas and well appointed rooms. Some are pool side with private entrance to pool and Jacuzzi. The restaurant and bar are superb. The staff are helpful and friendly.

Yelp
A Beautiful place to stay and experience Borrego. Restaurant opens at 5pm so have lunch somewhere else. But Starbucks coffee is open early 7am. Cannot order or pay by phone to pick up though. Take the time to enjoy the beautifully curated grounds, pool, fountains and spa. Make it a day trip, an overnight or a long weekend. You won't regret it.

Yelp
We had such a lovely getaway at La Casa Del Zorro Resort & Spa! The dog-friendly Mesquite Casita with a private heated pool was exactly what we needed for a weekend of relaxation. We look forward to returning!

Yelp
Bartenders were awesome! Drinks are priced accordingly. Good whiskey collection. I've only heard about the casitas when staying there which have always been very good reviews. It's been in Borrego for many years & it's a mystery to stop in for dinner or cocktails. It feels good to be in there.

Yelp
This place has a hidden jam... Lots of acreage, great restaurant and only about 5 miles from the little town of Borrego Springs. They have a really cool area within this resort for stargazing. No lights and almost like arena seating to view the skies. Watch out for the coyotes, they're running all over the place.

Yelp
This rare gem is definitely worth checking out. We rented a casita with a hot tub and it was perfect. Such a great getaway that wasn't too far from San Diego. The property has been around since the 30's and gone through different changes according to one of the employees. I had the feeling they are trying to perk things up. There weren't that many people around, but the charm of the place was very unique. You can rent bikes for free during your stay. Also, they have an entire game area of horseshoes, bocce ball, tennis, shuffleboard, life size chess as well as a nice fitness center. Oh, and we found a hidden Starbucks onsite. Restaurants are limited, but the food was excellent. Also, wonderful staff. Will definitely be returning...

Yelp
We have stayed here in the past & the hotel is on the historic registry. The lobby, bar and grounds are quite charming but... We recently stayed in one of the few updated casitas and the interior was definitely much nicer than the last one we stayed in which was very outdated. The private pool area still needed updating. There were new comfortable lounges but the shade umbrella was broken & missing pool tires & landscaping were tired.Be forewarned if you stay during the week the restaurant does not serve breakfast or lunch. Our lodging had tiny fridge and microwave only. There are no dishes, etc. I personally stay in a resort so I do not have to leave the resort especially when it boasts many amenities. There was no spa during the week.Dinner was pricy and not wonderful but outdoor setting was cozy but they should of lit the big fireplace as it was chilly & inside was freezing.Cool bar area. There was a power outage first day we were there that they knew about & one that they did not know would happen. That translated as zero food for one day at the resort. They could of at VERY least passes out some cookies or drinks. Chef was rude. Nice gal at checkout adjusted our bill but next Am even their mini mart only offered some old muffins & they said they had to throw out all food.We left without food again. Hope they can save this cool old property but it definitely need some TLC & training of the staff.Left a bit disappointed.

Courtney A.

Yelp
The pool in the cabana hadn't been cleaned or serviced in months. The water looked thick, slimy, it was green. It was gross. Huge Roaches also in the rooms.

Yelp
We arrived to discover we had booked the incorrect dates for our stay and the staff could not have been more accommodating in coming up with a solution and our visit just got better from there. We had first stayed here over 3 years ago and noticed the lodging had been nicely updated. Everyone we came into contact with - the bartenders, servers, front desk and housecleaning - were friendly, courteous and professional. We enjoyed a lunch and a dinner at the restaurant and found the food to be fresh, well-executed and reasonably priced. Our room was spacious, clean and appointed with all the customary conveniences. We cannot wait to come back and highly recommend La Casa del Zorro for a relaxing desert getaway!

Jill S.

Yelp
Casa del Zorro is lovely, really lovely. Spacious well maintained grounds and room. I hope this place remains forever, but it is quite large to maintain even in slightly off season. Reading other reviews, I can tell they must adjust their offerings according to the season as sometimes no lunches or dinners, other times there is service. Although we ate elsewhere, we did go to the Fox Den for drinks and the bartender was overwhelmed with 10 people, all arriving within short time period. We were there at happy hour but had non-happy hour drinks at $10 and $12 . We had requested an ADA room and seeing the size of the room and what was needed to qualify for ADA, I know why there are so few of the ADA rooms. It must have taken 2 rooms together to make the space needed for wheel chair accessibility, walkers etc, wide doorways etc. yet there was no direct walkway from the the parking area or a wagon to fill with baggage to go from car into the room. But plenty of grab bars in the bathroom! Bed was wonderful as were linens but the bed was too high off the floor for either of us to get into bed with any degree of ease. The staff everywhere were gracious and helpful, including one riding around in a cart whom I flagged down and the night time reservations person who helped when I could not find my way back to the building once it was dark. Lots of winding roads throughout! Looking forward to a longer stay when I will bring my own step-stool. ;)

Yelp
Husband and I have been coming here since 1989! We have seen many changes and we're pleased to see the return of Mediterranean ambiance. Had a delicious dinner in the restaurant. Everyone pleasant and accommodating. Our room was poolside on a "family" pool". The pool was not kept up. Green slimy water. Also a lot of paint chipping around the pool area. Although my husband mentioned that it was his wife's birthday it wasn't acknowledged at all !!

Nancy S.

Yelp
This hotel is unsafe. Being in the middle of the Desert you would thhink that tis hotel would be set up foir emergencys like CPR being needed no they ar enot. My son needed resusuciation I called the front desk who did ot even come down nor did they have a defibulator. My son died and they never even sent a person down to help me. Do not go there its unsafe. Also they could care less.

Jax W.

Yelp
State on your website that nothing is open. The pool was DISGUSTING with mold growing on the floor of the pool until they finally cleaned it on Friday. The Cafe (it is a bad Starbucks..and we all know that food is awful) runs out of food and the restaurant is not open for breakfast or lunch so you have to go to "town" for more bad food. The only good thing is the dinner at the restaurant...when it finally opens...and Gerry the bartender. Would highly avoid the entire area.

Yelp
* Price: $400 for regular room, $600 plus for casita. * Accommodation: large property with many activities on site, several pools, private pools, and jacuzzi. Casita has a microwave, fridge, coffee maker with supplies, bathroom toiletries, dining table, living room, private parking, free wifi, ROKU TV with many streaming apps, gym, yoga classes, etc. 5 star. * Location: inside of Anza-Borrego NP. * Motif: southwestern decor, traditional. * Service: pleasant We stayed here for one night to hike around Anza-Borrego to see wildflower bloom. We did not know what to expect and were pleasantly surprised at how beautiful this place was. The ground is very well-kept, and there are many desert flowers. The main pool is very big. There is a restaurant onsite. We stayed at the Honeysuckle casita, two bedrooms and two baths, a jacuzzi, and private parking. The casita is spacious and very clean. They provide continental breakfast including with room, very basic but decent with option to pack your breakfast which is nice. The resort is also pet friendly. So, bring your furry friends with you. Overall, we enjoyed our stay here and highly recommended this place if you visit Anza-Borrego.

Michael W.

Yelp
Stayed here for our annual Family Vacation in one of the Casitas. Having your own pool is such a great perk. The Desert Star Casita fit our family of 7 perfectly. The staff is awesome and super friendly. Daily ice delivery is just a text or phone call away. They bring it in an ice chest so you can refill your coolers. La Casa Del Zorro is a great place to relax and unwind. We recommend staying here.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Pros: the pools are great. Having your own pool at your casita is awesome. Outdoor areas are great. Cons: casitas are dated and in mild disrepair. For example, the towel racks are coming off the walls, the wallpaper is from the 70's, the furniture placement makes no sense...WiFi is intermittent. No remote for bedroom tv....

Shawna S.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor and take some time to unwind at La Casa Del Zorro. The long weekend stay in a casita with private hot tub was exactly what we needed to de-stress. Highly recommend! And bonus for having a Beyond Burger option at the restaurant (not listed on the menu), for us vegans. (Hoping they someday add a Just Egg option, or todo, for breakfast.)Still, our favorite get away- hands down. Pet friendly (a must for us), lots to do on site (if you want), friendly staff and even a Starbucks. Phenomenal. Can't wait to come back.

Yelp
We stayed in a casita this time and I'm ruined for life. Casitas going forward. The one we stayed in was in a great location and the beds were super comfortable. My only complaint is the furniture needs replacing. The couch stunk. Which leads me into this: if you're going to blindside a guest with a $50 dollar pet fee, at least have furniture and carpet which justifies the fee. It's kind of a joke. My dog is way cleaner than that couch (God forbid you take a blacklight to that thing, yikes). The grounds are amazing and we love coming here. We love the fire pits and the manicured sitting areas. We didn't eat at the restaurant this time, but enjoyed our last meal there. Starbucks on site is a nice touch. All those things make returning likely however, when charging for pets you should verbalize that at check in. Not a fun surprise checking out.

Yelp
Wanted to give a close friend a proper send-off - who will be embarking on an epic, multi-year journey - so figured we'd go somewhere unique and special - the vast and breathtaking desert community of Borrego Springs - within the Anza-Borrego State Park. With all the nearby campgrounds fully booked out, I started looking at lodging in the area. There's not much selection - especially since some places actually close during the Summer, due to the excessive heat. La Casa del Zorro is actually one of the few places that is open, and the prices were fairly reasonable, considering the area. LCDZ is like a desert oasis that aims to be a "home away from home". I opted for one of their private casitas - the 1bedroom casita known as "Fern" #60. One of the great things about the casitas is that you really do have your own personal space. There are some resorts out there where you can rent a cottage - only to find that you're mere feet from your neighbors. Not here. The casitas have a lot of area between one another - so you do get a bit of privacy, which is great since a few of the reviews complained about "paper thin walls" in the individual rooms. It's nothing glamorous, the property does show its age, but it is well-maintained considering the area. Fern (the name of our casita) - is like a 1bdrm apartment, complete with your own private spa, as well as covered carport (which is awesome considering I have a black car). You get a mini-fridge and microwave, sink, and a queen sized bed. The sofa is L-shaped, and my friend found it comfortable enough to sleep on while I took the bed. Water pressure for the shower is amazing - and there was no shortage of hot water. A/C worked very well. There was a giant spider in the porch at night, and a even bigger spider/queen ant/queen wasp??? thingie outside my bedroom window the following morning. Just prep yourself for it - you're in the desert, so these insects are giant (even the fire ants) - and they're very sturdy considering their environment. Front desk staff - Lori, Martha, and Justina were all friendly and resourceful. Knocked off some points because late check-out wasn't able to be granted when I inquired - I know it's subject to availability, but as a Best Western/WorldHotel Diamond Select member - their highest elite tier - would've been nice to be able to stay even an extra hour (to noon, instead of standard checkout at 11am) - Check-in being at 4pm. My friend and I aren't messy guests, so turnover wouldn't have been bad either. I booked directly through the hotel's website since that's usually the best way to go - but I did feel like I was booking through an OTA (third party travel site), from the treatment. In fact, there was no acknowledgement of hotel status - which is something that hotels tend to do if you book direct, as they earn more money. The extra hour could've provided us an opportunity to check out more of the nearby statues that we weren't able to see before sundown the day before - since we didn't get to town until a little after 5pm.

Yelp
Here we are again! We've come to this resort about monthly for nearly two years now. My parents love it (RIP dad), we love it. It's super chill with a classy vibe. Three pools, villas with private pools and jacuzzi, always glassy and crystal clear. The food is phenomenal. Pricy but worth it if you're gonna spend. Honestly, we've been here so much these past couple years as my dad was fighting cancer. Dry heat = great for chemo patients. The short rib is great, Wellington great, kids Mac and cheese is great. Everything honestly. Gourmet in the desert. We've rented the villa Marigold lots of times. And a couple other ones but the rooms by the pools are great. No real pool hours just be chill and awesome. Also staff are great! Ask Jill about the history of the place, she's the best. Camp David of the west as they say.

Sileen B.

Yelp
Another INCREDIBLE stay! LOVE this spot! My family has been visiting for 8 years. Many things make it so special. Number one, the staff.! They have always made us feel like family. Any issues that may arise are responded to immediately. Just to mention a few of my favorites: Justina, Romi, Chayce, Martha, Tony, Lucy Laurie, Vivianna, Najee. And the list goes on! Positives: Beautiful grounds, super clean rooms and pools. Hot spas. They love and welcome dogs and kids. Great food (a little pricey) but worth it. Such comfortable beds, linens, rooms and casitas. Lot's of fun activities. This place and it's people are held dear in our hearts and will be forever. Can't wait to return! We hope to keep building memories. Worth every single penny!

Yelp
We had a truly brilliant vacation at La Casa Del Zorro last month and rented one of their awesome Casitas! It was sooooo worth it! This place really is a 5/5 Star resort with beautiful and meticulously landscaped grounds, gorgeous pools and spa, yummy restaurant, and, most of all, a first rate staff. It's almost like a step back in time with old world elegance and modern amenities. I could easily envision Cary Grant or Ava Gardener staying here! First and foremost is that this truly is a high end property with no attention to detail left unnoticed. Our Casita was elegantly furnished with quality furniture, spacious living and sleeping areas, and one of the most comfy mattresses, EVER! It was super nice to have a separate bar area that had a sink, refrigerator, and microwave since I had some extensive hikes planned in the area and had specific meal and snack plans. What's more, La Casa Del Zorro is totally dog friendly! The location is just far enough out of town so that you feel secluded but still close enough that you can drive there in under 15 minutes for food and groceries. It was also really nice to return from long hikes in Anza Borrego, call the resort's restaurant, The Fox Bistro, and have dinner packed and ready for us to take back to our Casita to enjoy on one of our patios. What really makes this resort so special is the staff! From reservations, checking in, to housekeeping, security, and management, really go about of their way to make sure your stay is special. The only negative experience we had was that, on our first night, some trashy guests who rented the larger Casitas decided to have a huge, loud party with tons of drunken guests wandering the grounds along with loud, blaring music. I mean, come on, REALLY?! The resort dealt with them in a professional manner as the party droned on and I could hear them being abusive to the staff. Finally, after 10 pm, they were kicked out, thank goodness. I blame the moronic guests for this sleazy occurrence, not the resort. La Casa Del Zorr, you are 5 Stars, all the way! See you again in a few months!

Yelp
We rented one of the small houses for 2 days- no room service while we stayed. There was a kitchenette, no utensils were available. The grounds were clean , nicely kept. The dining experience was not good. Very few patrons in dining area at breakfast- wait time was over 10 minutes- only one waitress was on duty. After ordering it took 30 minutes for our breakfast to arrive. The food was good, the waitress although very busy was nice. All the staff we did encounter were nice but the overall stay/ accommodations could have been better. We would not recommend

Yelp
From the moment you check in to the property you are made to feel relaxed and at ease. Most of the property is individual Casitas with their own parking spot, either hot tub or pool (both in some of the larger casitas), with beautifully appointed bedrooms and bathrooms. The living areas are more than comfortable with deep seated couches and chairs. Sitting in the hot tub in the cool mountain air is nothing short of heaven. If you arent one for hot bubbly water, I urge you to try the spa. Yes, it is that good. I had a facial that made my skin feel refreshed and new, without feeling oily. One of my travel companions had a massage and hit pure relaxation. While on property, check out the Fox Den bar. It has the distinction of having an absolutely amazing and personable bartender (shouting out Jeane!), as well as the oldest mural in San Diego County. The only bad thing I can say is that I had to check out and go home. 3 nights was definitely not enough!

Yelp
Our family has been there several times. I truly love it. And I appreciate places that are smaller, boutique hotels. I have only visited in the spring when the weather is crisp and cool in the morning and perfect temps mid day. The grounds are immaculate. There are duplexes, single family homes, and apartment style houses. You can get a place with your own pool or jacuzzi. They have all types of activities for the kids too. A life size chess board, ping pong, lawn bowling and a fitness center. Finally, the restaurant on the premises is very nice. The food there is excellent. This place is a true gem.

Yelp
We returned a year later and, as usual, loved our time at the resort. Beautiful, quiet, and well kept. We noted more sitting areas around the resort and many maintenance projects completed. Our casita was fantastic - comfortable beds and I believe the bathrooms have been redone. Main pool was beautiful and dinner in the Fox Den was also great. Love this place

Yelp
Let's start with the summary first. You can review the details below if you are interested. In the end we have to ask ourselves, was this stay worth $300 a night PLUS resort fee? What did we really get for that money? 1. Non-communicative front desk and reservations staff with an indifferent attitude. 2. Multiple issues with our expensive room, all of which could have been avoided if the room was properly checked and maintained. 3. Possible food poisoning from their restaurant. 4. Very slow bar service. So take all of this into consideration before you book here. And remember, there are a few other decent alternatives in town. Issue details:: 1. Lack of response to multiple communications using multiple channels (phone, email and text) over a multi-day period prior to our arrival trying to extend the stay one extra night. Sat. 3/16 - We replied to a text from del Zorro to try and add one night to our upcoming stay and also contacted the hotel via the booking.com website twice to try and extend the stay one night. No reply to text or other attempts. 3/18 - called the hotel/resort early AM in advance of our arrival later that day. No reply so I left a detailed message about the extra night and requested a call back. Never got a reply call. 2. Cavalier attitude of front desk staff as we checked in when we mentioned these many communication attempts with their response of "sorry, we were very busy." End result: No rooms available at check-in time so we had to book a night someplace else. Of course if they had bothered to respond to our messages days earlier there may have been a room available. But no, they were very busy. While the resort personnel were "very busy" and could not extend the professional courtesy to respond to our numerous requests over a several day period for an extra nights stay (which we never got of course but we found another place in town which was more fun anyway), the resort personnel had plenty of time to keep texting us once we arrived and checked in about their available yoga classes, dining options and to inquire "how are you doing". Maybe they should consider focusing their efforts in pre-stay communications versus disappointing the guests with their lack of communications skills and indifferent attitudes. 3. The bar - very slow service unless you like waiting 10 minutes in a line to order a drink. Issue was less about the bartender and more about improper staffing to handle the people packed into the bar to not only drink but to have dinner. Too much for one person to handle, especially during a period when they had high occupancy. Rooms issues: 1. Toilet completely clogged before we ever used it. They had to send out maintenance people to snake it both in the room and outside the building to finally get it working. 2. Lights outside our room on our patio did not work. 3. A/C did not work very well as we never could get the room below 69 degrees. 4. Possible food poisoning from salad from their restaurant - We got some takeout food from their restaurant - The Fox Bistro - an entree and a Caesar salad. One person ate the salad only and got very ill shortly after eating the salad (a couple of hours after). Vomiting and more. You get the picture. 4. No hair dryer in room - had to go and get one at front desk 5. The room we had came with a tub and a separate shower. While typically one might expect to find bath salts or oils and similar when there is a tub provided, none of these items were in the room. And, the bath soap dispenser was anchored to the shower wall. Fine if all you want to do is take a shower, but again, what about that tub?

Yelp
Been out here twice for the Perseid meteor shower and it is worth the drive. The sky here absolutely sparkles and when Earth is facing the galactic core the Milky Way is really distinctive. The drive through the mountains can be rough, so if you are sensitive to motion sickness take a pill ahead of time (or approach from palm springs instead of temecula). Borrego Springs has limited food available during this time so either pack food that you can microwave in your casita, get to the Starbucks on premises during daylight, or go into town to the one restaurant that's open in August. The night sky here is amazing, and this place has an old driving range that they've turned into a "star theater" where you can hear yipping coyotes but not worry about them sneaking up to steal your children. Bring a flashlight wrapped in red plastic so you can maneuver without blinding other guests. Sometimes the staff put out folding chairs but we usually bring camping chairs or cots so we can look straight up. IF you do get a casita with a hottub (and you should splurge) you might want to ask maintenance to turn off the heat before your arrival. Your hottub will be warm enough just from the ambient temperature. in 2024 we stayed for three nights and thanks to the weather clearing up we saw way more meteors the night after the Perseid maximum. Also got a photo of the Andromeda galaxy! We've also seen wildlife (fox, bats, owl) after dark on the premises. This place does a great job of blending into the spectacular environment. The staff were personable, friendly and helpful.

Yelp
The amenity, the ground, the room and casita are exceptional! The grounds was beautifully landscaped. It also has multiple areas for games and entertainment. Yoga class was held outdoor. Room was spacious. Ours was a double Queen size bed room with sitting area and a large bathroom. There is a balcony where one can sit and eat breakfast and read. Every 2 buildings have its own pool and hot tub. Casita has its own hot tub. Overall, we had an enjoyable time and planned our next return trip!

Yelp
Used to love it here but there is too much deferred maintenance and the grounds are not well kept. But the food is still great! If it was $250 a night, no complaints but at $350, not worth it.

Yelp
La Casa Del Zorro is a desert sanctuary that combines luxury, elegance and an appreciation for the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. With so many cool sculptures in the desert it was nothing short of extraordinary. Whether you're seeking a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or simply a place to recharge your spirit, this resort is a perfect choice. Our casita was a private oasis with fitting decor, plush furnishings and a spacious patio with a pool. My experience here was nothing short of exceptional, and I cannot wait to return to this enchanting desert oasis. What a wonderful time!

Yelp
Out of the Spirit of the Season, I'm giving a 4 rather than my original thought of 3 star review. I chose to spend my Christmas here alone...My sweet MomMa passed away 3 months ago and (long story) Christmas was very precious for us. Best choice EVER!!! The staff, from first call to check out could not have been more helpful or kinder. My room was splendid. The property is amazing. I parked my car on Tuesday and did not move it until I left on Thursday. So why not 5 stars? The room was a bit dark and the lighting not great. The shower water was inconsistent...I love a hot shower and it was sometimes lukewarm, at best. No microwave. Suggestion: Have a "community" microwave (a $59 one can last a long time). Way small fridge and no freezer. I'll leave it there, although there's more. My woes may seem petty/trivial, but had high expectations and they were not met in a 5 star manner. No regrets. Would recommend, with some caveats.

Yelp
The resort was lovely, and the front desk receptionists and waiters were accommodating. However, the bartender and the dinner receptionist were rude with a very strong attitude, making it unpleasant to walk in and stay. I will never go there again.

Yelp
La Casa del Zorro (and Borrego Springs) is and always will be my home away from home when escaping to a desert oasis. After two visits, I refuse to stay anywhere else. The front desk is always friendly and welcoming--shout out to Mona--plus we spend at least two evenings with the on-property Fox Den Bar's bartender Jeanie sipping on local ruby red grapefruit cocktails (read my bar review here: https://www.yelp.com/biz/the-fox-den-bar-borrego-springs-3?hrid=57zv3c3d60uFFQalTlS-FA&utm_campaign=www_review_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct)). The grounds are extremely well maintained and manicured with so many amenities that include, but are not limited to: multiple fountains, a koi fish pond and creek, star-gazing theatre, multiple activities (various pools, daily yoga/meditation, fitness facility, tennis/pickleball/horseshoe/bocce ball/ping-pong/croquet courts, life-size chess, bike rental, board games, mile-long jogging/walking trail, and more!). The Fox Bistro is one of the best dining options in town; reservations recommended. Be sure to also take advantage of The Spa at La Casa for a massage or nail care. During our first visit, my partner and I stayed in a second-floor, roughly 600 square foot King Deluxe Room which was gorgeous with cathedral ceilings, pool-view balcony, and a massive marble bathroom. Truly a sanctuary of solitude and relaxation. This most recent stay, my partner, our friend and pup booked one of their nineteen private casitas (view location and details about each casitas on this map: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1UeUE6dOeo_ZMtBrWWcSKg1wJtYqAl3rZ&hl=en_US&ll=33.20999041488413%2C-116.3282519148783&z=19). Given that it was November and chilly, we chose the Honeysuckle with the in-ground hot tub and two bedrooms. The casita was absolutely perfect for all of us to get some much needed R&R. If one of these houses were for sale, I'd snatch it up as a vacation home in an instant! A few tips: - Reservations are recommended for The Fox Bistro for staffing purposes. Remember, this is a small town. Expect service to be on the slow side; yet no need to be in a hurry here. - Absolutely don't miss out on stargazing in the theatre or from a hot tub. People come from all over the world to visit this dark sky community. - There are complimentary Tesla and EV car chargers on property for guests. - Don't decide which room based on whether it has a fireplace. All fireplaces have been "retired" as of spring 2020 to protect the park and community. Do enjoy the massive public fire pit though. - Pets are only $50 for every 3 nights. They offer complimentary dog bowls and a bed, too! - Complimentary breakfast is offered daily with a voucher. It is nothing spectacular but worthy of a snack and coffee prior to a hike or exploration of Anza Borrego. - Spa reservations can be made online and are required. Keep in mind that they're closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. Truthfully, I held back from writing a 5-star review back in February of 2022 out of fear that the secret would get out. Well, so be it! Yelp
I wanted to fall in love with this place but our experience was a mixed bag. Pros: gorgeous property that is fastidiously maintained, every casita or deluxe room is steps away from one of over 20 pools on the grounds (and they are heated to a perfect temperature), our room was beautiful and comfortable, and the resort is very dog friendly! Cons: Service was wildly inconsistent. Before our stay, I left two voicemails during business hours over the course of several days to ask about their dog policy and no one called me back. On my third try I finally reached a person. No one was around at check out time to give me a detailed list of our charges and we didn't receive one via email either. We had to request it once we got home. The food was subpar. (I'll write a separate review of the on-site restaurant.) Surely there is a local bakery that could provide freshly baked items as opposed to the cold crossaints and sad muffins that were part of the continental breakfast. Maybe even just warm them up in the oven or microwave before serving them? I'm sorry to nitpick, but if I'm going to spend extra money to stay at a resort, I expect attention to detail at every level. We loved the town of Borrego Springs and Anza Borrego but we won't stay here again.

Yelp
Wasn't sure what to expect.I was an invited guest. The property is quite large very modest. Very accommodating staff. I loved my room. Very spacious, clean, nice amenities. Small wet bar, fireplace, sitting area, king size bed. My little patio led out to the pool and jacuzzi. There are several pools through out the grounds, pickle ball court, large lawn, complementary yoga. A nice area to sit and star gaze. It is great for a "zen" cation. Hike, bike, lounge. If you want to get away from it all this is your place. I will return.

Yelp
I would have thought this would be a 4 or 5 but I will let you decide. I actually lean towards a 2.5 right now for the price. Lovely property in a tranquil secluded location. Rooms are still beautiful and spacious but... the fireplaces in the room are locked up now. Ok not sure if it's really an eco concern or fire hazard concern but a wood burning fireplace was amazing years ago. Even in summer the nights can get quite chilly. Giving them the eco benefit of the doubt, but now that they don't have to provide wood or clean the chimneys, why not put in a gas option like many other places? I am really bothered by this even more because when we got there late December during a winter rain storm, the heat in our room did not work. We told the front desk directly twice and they said it would be fixed that night by maintenance but no one ever showed up. Mercifully housekeeping came with an extra blanket but why no extra blankets in the linen closet to start with in winter? And it was December. No one else ever had issues with the heat not working? Attention! We ran out of hot water 3 times on our one night stay! It was a cold day and a shower after hiking at 4pm was fine and warm. One at 5pm was icy. The next morning the 8 am and 815 am were both icy. This is the ultimate pit. What would you say if 3/4 of the time you tried to shower at a motel 6 you had no hot water? This is supposed to be a luxury resort. Next big problem is no matter how it looks, the walls are paper thin in the motel and you hear everything. Everything. Enough said. Last insult is that there is basically no cell service there at least for ATT and they said the wifi was sketchy. The wifi was non existent. We chatted with a few other guests who confirmed no wifi on their stay. When you are in a luxury resort in the desert, you need some wifi to make plans for dinner or travel. OMG. The good things are the place is lovely and tranquil. Except if you are hearing your neighbors next door. The restaurant is actually quite good and the staff very lovely and efficient with a very good menu and it all tasted great. The staff we chatted with were very sweet and tried to help. Mostly I'm disappointed as I reviewed them on their personal questionnaire a month ago after our stay and got no response so that means to me they are just doing formalities and don't really care. A shame because we have stayed here many times when our kids were young and it was great and a lot different but we also rented casitas then as we were a bigger group. It was also summer so no issues with heat or hot water and in a casita you can't hear the people through your walls... Such a disappointment when it should be a beacon of luxury in the SD desert. LA Times just mentioned them last week in an article about Borrego Springs. They better shape up. LA is going to be onto them shortly.

Yelp
Wow, what a place! First of all we were so lucky to get a spot for one night on short notice because they were booked to capacity the front desk mentioned, when my husband called to confirm the reservation. Why booked to the max? People flocking in to capture the event of the Perseids! My husband surprised me with this outing, with me being enamored with meteor showers. The appearance as you approach the Resort doesn't show the size of the place and the beauty until you drive past the front lobby. It is hot when we arrive, 106! We park in the park so that we could check-in. We quickly rush to the lobby to escape the heat and wind. Inside, nice and cool also nicely decorated. Paul helped us with our check-in. He was very helpful giving us tips for dining at the resort as well as nearby restaurants. Paul was familiar with the stargazing craze going on that weekend. He was quick to give us some pointers. I'm going to mention them here only because this was the main reason why we were in the area. First tip, the resort has a StarGazing Theater. Two other tips, to drive back up the mountain to Culp Valley Trail or just drive south of the resort find an open spot off the side of the road and park. Before I go further with the stargazing, let me fill you in on our room. We were at room #138. It was an end room, near parking in the back section. The room was wonderful! Clean, not cluttered with decor and spacious. The AC worked wonderfully and the ceiling fan above the bed help circulate the cold AC air. The room had a small wet bar, with small fridge. A nice large TV, which we did not use. The restroom large and open feel. The shower pressure was great and the temperature of the water worked up to par. The shower drain worked well too! Can't say I'm a happy camper when it comes to slow, draining water in a shower or tub! Off the back patio is a little seating area if you dare to sit in the heat. But it is so cute, I can't believe the Vinca's in the garden box could survive the sun beaming sun! The bed was comfortable, the sheets and comforter pleasing to the touch. The pillows a little too puffy for us, but doable for one night. Man, I wish we were staying longer to enjoy the comfort of this room, the amenities, the spa/fitness and restaurant. We will be sure to book here again and a bit longer to enjoy it all. Back to the stargazing... we did drive up the road from the resort. Maybe 5 to 10 miles, we drove from the resort this is about 9pm. We had our chairs in tow. DO NOT LAY ON THE GROUND! You do not want any critters such as snakes, bugs including scorpions making way onto any possessions and coming home with you. We sat off a little nice clearing on the side of the road. We sat for 30 minutes and saw 6 perseids. It was quite windy. We decided to head back to the room take a nap and head back out at midnight for a better show. At midnight we decided to take our chairs to the Stargazing Theater on the resort. It was very close that we carried our chairs, side tables and a blanket. I wore my headlamp. There were a few people at the theater. You may need your eyes to adjust to see where people may be sitting or laying. Long story, short in 90 mins we were able to view 106 perseids! The night sky was just beautiful as you could view the Milky Way as well. But with these falling beauties, it made for a spectacular night show. We will definitely return to the resort to take advantage of what they have to offer, which is a lot! Especially during the next spectacular night, sky show. Thank you La Casa Del Zorro, a shout out to Paul for great dining and stargazing tips.

Yelp
A friend who had stayed here several times recommended it highly and reserved it for 3 of us. In terms of the room, I would give it 4 stars although our hot tub was broken and they wouldn't move us to another unit saying everything was full, although it appeared to be far from that. As for dining in the restaurant, I couldn't give it more than 1 star for my meal and service. I ordered the New York steak rare which came out medium the first time, and only medium rare the second when I specifically ordered it cooked rare. The restaurant manager ? talked to me about my meal basically arguing that it was cooked to my specifications, even though it obviously wasn't. She was very rude and seemed to be spoiling for an argument. Once I made the first complaint, table service disappeared entirely, and we had to ask for each step of the way. Ordering more, getting our check, paying our check. I certainly won't be back

Yelp
The resort is sprawling with native plants throughout. The service we received from the lobby and the people in the restaurant is compared to no other place I have been. They are warm, friendly, and inviting. The room is very large. The bathroom was so nice. All the accommodations were so comfortable. The food in the restaurant is delicious. I cannot wait to go back!!! Just an FYI if the moon is full or near full you will not see many stars. We found this out the hard way!!

Mary Anne F.

Yelp
Pretty much everything. Resort Definetely needs some updating and maintenance. My bathroom had no working outlet. The casita looked shabby and tired. Restaurant staff, hostess and server, were downright rude and not helpful at all. On the bright side, the Coffee shop/ market serving Starbucks was clean, updated, comfortable and the staff there were very friendly. For the price we paid, I would not go back to this "resort."

Yelp
La Casa del Zorro appears to have been - and could definitely be - a wonderful vacation resort. We had planned this trip, and made our reservations over three months before we arrived. It was over Christmas. We came with our entire family, and we booked their biggest casita. Frankly, because of the circumstances, we would have (and did) have a good time simply because we were together and in a holiday spirit. So why such a mediocre rating? Things just didn't work out as advertised. When we booked the room we told them that we had eight adults, a 6-month-old baby, and five dogs. The office manager, Jake, said it was fine to bring the dogs since the casita is private. Later, we received an email from La Casa del Zorro inviting us to make reservations for a special Christmas Eve dinner. On October 5 we jumped on it and made the Christmas Eve dinner reservation for 6:00 for all of us (no dogs, of course). We all piled into a rented 15-passenger van and headed for Anza Borrego. We didn't know when we would get there, so we didn't make reservations for dinner. When we arrived, we checked in and went to our casita. It was very nice! Four bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, a private back yard with a pool and jacuzzi. This was going to be fun. We headed over to the hotel restaurant and told the hostess we had eight adults and a baby. The hostess said that without a reservation we would need to wait to be seated - we should have called first. Not sure why she said that, because the restaurant was not all that crowded and we were seated within five minutes. Strange attitude. Our food was very good, and our server did his job well. No complaints there. However, that strange attitude was our first taste of something being wrong. This area (Anza Borrego) is very lightly populated. I imagine that is precisely the way the local residents want it to be and to remain. Keep that in mind. But they need to make a living, so here we are- tourists - to provide that sustenance. Back to the casita and we noted there is very poor cell service there. No big deal - there is Wi-Fi included, right? There is a very strong Wi-Fi signal, yes, but you cannot get an IP address from this casita. We all tried repeatedly and often, and asked several times at the front desk about this. Never during our four-night stay did we have Wi-Fi from our casita. They are fully aware of the problem, and say they are "working on it." We brought some bagels and cream cheese with us for morning breakfast. The casita has a microwave oven, a sink, a small mini-bar style refrigerator (no freezer), two coffee makers, and coffee cups, but no silverware, plates, bowls, or other utensils. Did I mention that there is no housekeeping service here? There isn't. You can ask for things at the front desk and they will be delivered (more coffee, more towels), but you need to walk over there because the phone doesn't work. One of the bedrooms apparently had some issues with the recent rains, and the carpet was wet and smelled. This should have been fixed before we, the guests, arrived. That was fixed, as was the pool and jacuzzi heater which was also not working properly. The internet was never fixed. Apparently Jake, the manager with whom we had spoken, was either fired or had quit. In his absence, the facility did not recognize our contract and when we got our invoice an additional $500 fee was tacked on for the dogs as a "pet fee." Little did we know, but our Christmas Eve dinner reservation was never logged in. The facility blamed Jake. (Why should that be our problem?) Without an apology, the dining hostess said she couldn't seat us since some of the guests had booked a month and a half ago. We had booked two and a half months ago! That angered me at the time, but as it turned out it was probably a blessing in disguise. We went to another restaurant and had a terrific dinner at a much better price. In fact, we had planned on having several meals at La Casa del Zorro, but that first encounter with the surly hostess was our only meal there, and we're glad not to have given them any more business. Unless things change (as I said, this place appears to have been - and could be - a wonderful resort) we won't be coming back here again. You are left with the feeling that they don't really care. Maybe they were understaffed at Christmas, I don't know. Maybe Jake left them with a mess. I really can't recommend them.

Yelp
This is great little place to get away for a weekend. Our room was large and well maintained. We had a bottom floor room with a private patio with access to the pool. The grounds are wonderful and there are plenty of things to do. We enjoyed the stargazing theatre both nights of our stay. The resort offer several other options for entertainment as well as a life sized chess board, bocce ball and many others. There are several pools which is great as there was never to many people by ours which made the stay more intimate and relaxing. There are several gazebos, walkways, firepits and other places to sit throughout the resort for privacy which was also very nice and relaxing. The on site restaurant was lovely and the food was very good. The staff was all the way around amazing and very accommodating. We will definitely be returning

Yelp
Very tired property. Not enough staff. You can tell it was once spectacular but it needs some big investment. Apparently in August, no jacuzzi or heated pools. Bar opens at 5 pm?
