10 Best Places for Tango in Buenos Aires | Condé Nast Traveler

"You might think you’re in the wrong place when you arrive at the door of La Catedral in Almagro, but look for the sign that says “tango” and head up the stairs. From there, you’ll enter the high-ceilinged warehouse, which used to be a dairy factory and now functions as an alternative tango dancehall. Bohemian tapestries, old guitars, vintage posters, Argentine flags, and tea lights cover the walls, making it look more like an antique shop than a milonga." - Allie Lazar

Beautiful place to hang out on the evening, have dinner and drinks with friends. BUT I was very confused by the Google comments as this place is NOT a proper milonga. The old man at the frontdoor is not being fairly honest in my opinion. The entrance fee is 5000 but food and beverage, tango show and live music are not included (need to tip the artists). Very few people there, even fewer will dance, at least before 01:30 A.M. since I left after waiting for 3 hours for more dancers to come. Most people are only tourists/spectators. Which means you think that you pay money to dance but you are actually entertaining the other people who come to get a glimpse of the tango culture. It's a pity because the venue is fabulous! Also, it was freezing cold in there (May, 2025) so this experience left me with mixed feelings. I felt like scammed but the art is nice. So go ahead with friends if you feel curious about the atmosphere, but do AVOID it if you are expecting to dance and meet other fellow tango dancers, especially during cold weather!

The atmosphere was something. I went to dance but there were just so many tourists who even didn’t wear dance shoes. Music wasn’t good, nor dancers. ( There were little dancers; I stayed till 2 )

Amazing experience! We went for one tango class and stayed for another one immediately. Such a great approach, I went to many dance classes but this was a unique argentinian style led by their hearts. If you hesitate if one hour of learning tango make sense - YES!!! IT DOES! No tango experience needed, no partner needed, no booking needed. Foreigners mixed with locals. Lessons were in spanish but there wasn't a problem to translate to English what we didn't understand. We felt welcomed. The building is bit dark and looks strange, but it has a soul and don't hesitate, just enjoy!

Arrived at 10 and left after midnight - the most exciting part of the evening is when the cat walked onto the dance floor. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place where tourists sit around and desperately hope something happens - it doesn’t.

As an English speaker with minimal fluency in Spanish, the experience was excellent. I took the class tango class. The instructors were excellent and the atmosphere was jovial and laid back. I am looking forward to more tango when I return home.

Google
I love this place ! there are Tango courses but also after 11pm there are many people dancing Tango Who can teach you the basics steps.

A fabulous tip off from a local. Good for meringa, learning 💃🏼 🕺🏼 tango Artsy feel in this ex-theatre turned a dancing ballroom with a bar. 4 ⭐️ due to adamantly accepting only pesos and bouncers attitude towards non local visitors.

Google
Neat rustic/kind of run down venue for milonga. It’s affordable and laid back with great live music. I like the art lining the walls and personality of the venue. 4 stars because the drinks left a lot to be desired, I didn’t try the food. I am unsure if there is table service for food. We ordered beverages for our group from the bar. I’d return again.

Yelp
AMAZING!!! I just saw the most beautiful and impressive FREESTYLE tango show!!! Words cannot even describe how much TALENT was exhibited tonight. Seriously. The freestyle tango show was so incredible, I'll be back to see it again. It was so creative! It was like a Broadway show for ARS 400. The venue is cool AF. Yeah it's dingy/dirty. But the prices are super cheap (wine is ARS 75, gin & tonic ARS 180, empanadas ARS 50) and everyone is very inviting! It's hipster cool, which is why an uptight person might not like it. Relax! You are having an authentic experience, despite the tourists! When it's not crowded you can actually talk to the performers and have room to dance. Plus, often there is live music! I felt such a warm welcome and like I said, the tango show was PHENOMENAL! Photos do not do it justice! We came for the show, but apparently they have classes as well. La Viruta is wonderful too, but there's a reason La Catedral is famous!

Yelp
I love this place. The room is huge, a tad dirty, it has no A/C, and the sound system kinda sucks. I Agree, the service is not the best. The bathrooms are pretty dirty (I think my hands where cleaner if I didn't wash them after stepping out). If you can get past all that, you will find passionate instructors that will give you a great quick Tango class and will stick around after your hour-hour 1/2 class has ended to chat and give a few pointers. If you are visiting, it's worth the trip. Tuesdays seem to be the busiest during the week, but they appear to be busy every day. It's cash only, so bring some bucks with you.

Yelp
The two stars is a reflection of the service, not the tango. I'll start off with the good - the tango class was fun. Not what I was expecting in terms of a class - there was no structure, they didn't teach us the steps but had us do exercises to feel the music and move with our partners instead of thinking about it and looking at our feet. It was interesting, though I would've liked more direction on how to do the foot movements. And it was fun to see people dance afterwards, some were really great at dancing! But the service here is horrendous. The worst service ever. The service is really slow. Drinks take forever after you order. There seemed to be one guy taking and bringing orders and he was a huge jerk. I made the mistake of ordering food, only because I was starving. I ordered the fried rice and it took literally an hour to get to me after I requested it. After 20 minutes I asked about it and the guy said it was coming soon. After 10 more minutes I tried to cancel it and he said I couldn't because it was coming right out. And he wasn't apologetic at all. Super rude. And the fried rice was disgusting. It was just rice and a few veggies fried in a frying pan with no seasoning or flavor. And then when we tried to pay - we had a large number of people in our group - we tried to break a couple of our bills and of course our server said no. So we decided to just sort it out later amongst the group, but he didn't want to even give us back the change that we were owed. He said he would get to keep the balance as tip (which would have been an extremely generous tip). What?!?!? He didn't deserve a tip - service was awful, but to have the audacity to announce that he would keep the change?? I would never come back here, especially since here are so many other milongas in the city.

Yelp
If you go to one Tango Experience, and you must, La Catedral is your destination. It's underground but upstairs, it's dark and filled with mystery but warm and friendly, a den of inequity but with a huge albeit torn heart- literally a huge paper (as old as the place) heart dangling overhead. This was my hangout for many weekdays to tango with friends and with the best- often those two overlapped. Bar service and healthy bar food served Burton almost closing into the wee hours. Many foreigners but not touristy, very Porteño but also Montenegro or Paris. It's the most interesting venue, for tango and other surprises and frankly whenever I go there on my BA visits I fit this in. To add to the magic there is a huge tho mini market of flower stands open 24/7 on the corner to your left as you saunter out at 5am. Grab a bouquet for cheap. There is a cover fee which is practically no charge, there are stray cats, feral lovers, I wanna say DamaJuanas, friends, good vibes and a lot to enjoy here.

Yelp
While this place seems potentially interesting, we found a largely empty place. Unkempt, scary bathrooms, nothing really going on as far as a lical crowd, and only a tourist or two who wandered in by accident.

Yelp
They are open any day of the week, but Wednesdays and Saturdays are the most popular. The milonga starts at 11 pm. Lots of people stay after the class to practice what they have learned. La Catedral is one unique space in Buenos Aires and has a very relaxed feel. You won't see a lot of top dancers there because the floor is not the best, but this is what makes it a comfortable space for beginners to give it a try. They have classes for beginners everyday starting between 6 and 7 pm. The floor is worn out. Chairs and tables are mismatched, but all of this gives it unifying look and feel of old Buenos Aires when tango was danced by men only. Dress casually; the atmosphere is something like a dive bar

Yelp
Arrived on a Thursday night and it was closed. Went to the dive bar down the street instead.

Yelp
Do not go here! The staff were so incredibly rude to us when we were here we basically had to leave after giving our order. The waiter was the rudest person that we ever encountered anywhere. He made it very clear that we were not welcome, despite the fact that we were only two of a handful of people there. La Catedral is not sufficiency special to justify being treated so badly. La Catedral clearly does not want tourists, so don't give them your business.
