On the Grid : La Cubanita

"Four years ago La Cubanita was a neighborhood market/dive bar. People in San Juan could buy detergent with a beer in hand. Today, La Cubanita has gone through a true metamorphosis. La Cubanita has truly captured the laid back whimsical feel of San Juan’s nightlife while maintaining the local old school market feel. Try their exceptional cocktails, which are made with fresh ingredients and homemade bitters." - Ana Jovane Serrano

One of my favorite bars I’ve ever been to. Go to the “desvio” side room where there’s no menu but the bartender will make you a bespoke cocktail curated to your taste. Amazing vibes and friendly service. In the entire world this is one of the bars I think of first when people ask the best places I’ve been to

Google
Was there like 2 weeks ago. Got there kinda early so it was a little empty. Was just wondering the roads and heard some music and walked in 😂 the bartenders were sweet and very attentive. The drinks were DELICIOUS! Will DEFINITELY come here again on my next trip to PR

Google
Bartenders and service were great and super knowledgable. I highly recommend the Cocolo which is extra refreshing on warm days, other highlights included the Beso de Marcel and a Paper Plane. If you ask the bartenders, they can pretty much make anything for you and it'll be great like the Boulevardier I had.

This isn’t food. It’s cocktails. Better than anywhere on the islands. These people know how to make drinks. I asked for a cocktail commemorating our time in the Caribbean, evoking its beauty. He made me a wonderful smooth Caribbean old-fashioned with Kahlua and chocolate bitters. Then I asked for something reflecting the fruit and flavors of the islands and he made a coconut rum drink that was smooth, distinctive and multi-flavored. Finally (my wife and I were sharing these) I asked him for his version of a classic, and he made a wonderful Daquiri with pineapple rum. These are served in proper glasses. I wanted to stay but had to go to dinner. I left full of ideas for my own cocktails.

The bartenders here, in the times that I have visited, are kind of rude. Aside from that, the drinks are out of this world! World class mixology, beautiful garnishes. The atmosphere is top notch. Not a place you want to miss.

Google
I mean…the drinks were good…but this place was a bit rough around the edges. The guy working there was cleaning the floors and was putting the nasty bucket of mop water on the counter. On the drink stand. Right next to us. (See filthy red bucket in photo right next to the clean glasses.) also they had a massive fruit fly infestation. They were covering everything. Maybe we found them on a bad day since all the other reviews are amazing but dang. Can’t get past the mop water.

Google
Super unique cocktails, and the atmosphere is great for groups wanting to chitchat! Would def go back - thank you!

Google
Visited this place with a group of 15 people and the proficiency with which place handled the crowd was just amazing to watch. Drinks were to notch. We tried Passion Fruit Margaritas, Taquiteasy and Cocoala - all of them were phenomenal. Highly recommended to visit this place if you are in old San Juan!

Yelp
Excelente servicio. La comida cubana estaba riquisima. Gran variedad de cocteles. Todos estaban super buenos. Recomendado.

Yelp
Great local dive bar, knowledgeable bartender, cool place to hang out to get out of the sun!

Yelp
Awesome drinks great vibe many foreigners from the US and other countries since it's close to the port. The fuego 23 is super good.

Yelp
Best bartender we have had in PR. Chill vibe and not loud and crowded. Great rum selection too

Yelp
Divey spot to great some great drinks. I had the cocolo which was quite refreshing. They also have food on the menu but we didn't order any. I think at one point they also have a salad on the menu. Good spot to grab drinks and if you have a partner that also does some Latin dances you can get your moves on.

Yelp
We were here 2 years ago and we could move around all of La Factoría...but due to Covid it looks like they sectioned it off. We had a great time, drinks were great and everyone there awesome

Yelp
Had a great time at this bar! Great location, very friendly bartender, and fun drinks! Ambiance is lovely as well - dimly lit, salsa music, and not too hectic (though we were there early). Got a Kentucky Mule & partner got a marg. Fun garnish on each (smoked/dried citrus slices). Partner said his marg was a bit on the tangy side, but not enough to ruin drink. Loved my mule! Had a twist of cinnamon or similar spice in there that made it out-of-this-world. If you're looking for a more low key, hole-in-the-wall, hidden gem - this is it!

Yelp
Have you eaten here? No? Well I firmly believe you should give this bar a try! Owned by the same owner as La Factoria this little bar oftly forgotten has amazing food and great drinks!! I love this place and come back often for the amazing bartenders (you're the best Mila) and amazing food! This is a must if you're ever in OSJ!

Molly S.

Yelp
Best people. Best drinks. Fun atmosphere. One of my favorite memories of Old San Juan.

Yelp
This was my FAVORITE stop in Old San Juan. Celso is the most amazing bartender. The Lavendar Mules are so good. Food is amazing. Love this plsce & highly recommend you stopping by the back room. AC is ice cold too!

Yelp
Hands down my favorite chill bar in OSJ. The music the people omg the drinks yes yes yes. First of all, the first time my husband and I visited this bar was not for drinks but for food. Yes one of the locals said "there's a chef in the back he will cook what you ask for", keep in mind it was roughly 12:00am with all restaurants closed. Needless to say my husband and I went, ordered two chicken sandwiches and grabbed a seat. About 2 mojitos and 45 minutes later the chef presented us with one of the most delicious tasting chicken sandwiches evaaahhhh. From that moment we were sold. After our food we stuck around and watched salsa dancing from tourist and locals alike. The music they play is from an older gen of Latin jazz/salsa type. This is not where u go for modern anything. It's rustic ascetics cannot be missed, honestly I find it charming and refreshing. On our second to last night in OSJ we got to talking with one of the younger bartenders. We got to hear about the good the bad and the ugly. He like most other Puerto Rican's that we interacted with was prideful and knowledgeable about PR's past present and future. Honestly I wish more people would care about their communities/city/state/country or at least their neighbors, in the same way some Puerto Rican's do.

Yelp
Solid craft cocktail spot. Very exotic ingredients. Worth checking out. Glad we stopped in. Customer service was great.

Yelp
Food And drinks were great ... so that's where the stars come from.. on the other hand the girl bartender with the blue/ green hair treated us like she woke up with a cold cup of coffee and someone shot her dog . This was our second time at the bar after rude service once already from guy bartender. Thought we'd give it another try. Extremely rude and bad at communicating . When we came in she acted like we were inconveniencing her . . So sorry we wanted to eat And have a drink ... ok rants over time to enjoy sunset . Try the place out it really does have great cocktails and fish tacos!

Yelp
This place was amazing, Amanda, Milton, Mila made our visit very hospitable. They talked about their life stories and the drinks were reasonable and good good good. Please visit them and go to the second room which is so cute with candle light... Puerto Rico luv ya!

Yelp
Rustic little bar adjacent to La Factoria. They offer excellent food options for late night snacks. We tried the crab pizza, mushroom pizza, pork belly tacos and a cheese plate. They offer hand crafted drinks made to order and the bartenders were all friendly. We stuck with mojitos which were quite refreshing. The pizza was delicious, served perfectly crispy and warm. I personally preferred the mushroom pizza but others in the party liked the crab option just as well. The pork belly tacos were just ok and the cheese plate was pretty standard. I'd recommend sticking to the pizza particularly the mushroom pizza. The ambience is pretty chill and the major perk is that their kitchen is open late and actually quite decent!

Yelp
Right around the corner from La Factoria was this gem of a place. We were out on a Tuesday night and sad that all the salsa clubs were closed. I started wallowing in distress to the bartender as we were there only for one night and I was super sad that I wouldn't be able to dance salsa. That's when the bartender says: "I have the perfect dancer for you. His name is Tempo and he's a salsa musician. You'll love him." Out comes Tempo who was working the door. He politely introduces himself and proceeds to lead me to dance floor where we dance a wonderful salsa number. It made my night! He also danced with my friend, whose birthday we were celebrating. Now that's what I call good service! I will 100% come back to enjoy another dance with Tempo. :)

Yelp
This bar represents Old San Juan it's like nothing was ever touched. At night dim lights that can set the mood for what ever you are into. People were there on dates and out just to have a relaxing good time. I'm not an expert in Spanish music but the music they play is of a afro/cuban/salsa/jazz kinda thing but dated as far back as the 60s. It is hands down my favorite bar to visit. Along with great cocktails there is a cook in the back that can whip up a small meal for you in case you get hungry. This is one of the spots you can grab a bite to eat late at night. Guaranteed, after grabbing a bite and a few cocktails you will be dancing like a pro to the sounds of La Cubanita. This place is truly a Gem.

Yelp
I love this bar! Is one of my favorites in Old San Juan! Great ambiance, music & drinks... just what you want in an Old San Juan bar. I love their VIP bar, we visited PR a couple of years ago and spent a couple of hours there. Too bad it was crowded but it was Saturday, so I understand. Oh and now they serve food. Too bad we weren't hungry yet.

Yelp
Come for the best cocktail experience in PR. Great job guys !! You have captured the essence of Old SanJaun . We had a wonderful time & look forward to our next visit.

Yelp
This place is a gem! Handcrafted drinks and salsa music. The bartender was great. I asked him to make me something with bourbon. He asked a few questions about my taste preferences and then went to work. The end result was delicious! They also have some great cocktails on the menu. The Concubine's kiss and La Guyabera were a couple that we tried and really liked. The place serves some appetizer style plates and pizza even late at night. We didn't eat so I can't comment on the food. But definitely nice to have that option when you're drinking.

Yelp
If you're traveling to the old city add this place to your itinerary. Good mix of locals, amazing cocktails, old school salsa music, and delicious tapas.

Yelp
This is my go-to bar in Old San Juan. In addition to the rustic, bodega-looking bar, I love the small, intimate space in the back. The bartenders pay close attention to their customers and prices are competitive to other popular locations in OSJ. Whether you're looking for a romantic spot or an energetic bar, this is the place to be.

Yelp
Not super cheap but really cool looking inside. I think Meg is into it. We scored 2 medallas at the cocktail bar. Challen

Yelp
It has a rustic, broken down look but it works for them. I really liked it. It's surprise after surprise when you walk through.

Yelp
A fantastic, laid-back bar with great drinks and an endless stream of classic salsa music. Definitely get the pulled pork empanadas.

Yelp
Best Mojito my fiancé had on the island. Ambience is true to real Old San Juan, bar was a general store for many many years prior and still has relics from that time
google avatar

Megan R.

Yelp
This spot is RAD. Candlelit, cool tunes, friendly bartender... We got madellas to save on skrilla but the cocktails looked major. Reminds me of boutique bars in Antigua, Guatemala. Definitely worth a check out if in old San Juan.

Yelp
As a resident of old San Juan for many years, I've always liked to support our local bars and restaurants. At la cubanita, I always seem to have issues. Their bartenders are always great and knowledgable but their food quality and overall service is horrible. Hurts to see such great location with that bad of service. They should also clean their bathrooms regularly. I addressed their manager about the situation and their bathrooms are still below sanitation standards. Many other better places in the area to waste my time at la cubanita.

Yelp
Fantastic bar with a great rustic-yet-upbeat ambiance. Sophia (Sofia?) prepared our cocktails and was a super-talented mixologist and engaging conversationalist.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing small bar with a great ambiance. The fish tacos are AMAZING. Also try the whisky sour with egg white. Trust me it's amazing.

Ashley M.

Yelp
Old convenience store turned jazz, cocktail bar. Unique twist on tradition, favorite cocktails. The bartenders are inviting and educational. The jazz is a nice change of pace. The service can be a little slow but hey, you're on island time and the wait is well worth it! Make sure you venture back through the main part for even more charm to a hidden gem.

Yelp
One of the finest cocktail bars I have ever been to. Great atmosphere and a strong passion for mixology. Try the old fashioned!

Yelp
Went for a couple of drinks with a friend. Nice local establishment, frequented by both locals and tourists. They actually have three bars, the front of the house is very reminiscent of the small local mom an pop store that once was there. In the second space they offer artesanal beers and hotdogs after 10PM, and a third area farther in which resembles a small speakeasy, which was a nice hideaway. The bartenders are very courteous and attentive to customers. Asked for some suggestions and bartender was very knowledgeable about drinks and mixology, so it was a very good experience. Had a traditional whisky sour, with egg whites (which is a lost art in itself) and was very good. Then a few more regular whisky sours, which were very refreshing. Nice music (Salsa) and quaint atmosphere. Though a bit pricey for my taste (it is a tourist zone, after all), it is worth the experience and a must go for local night life.

Yelp
Horrible service and management. Saw some of their customers being treated disrespectful for an incident that was not their fault. NOT RECOMMENDED. I would definitely go elsewhere next time I come back to Old San Juan.
