Tucked away in this semi-old and quiet plaza are a few gems of ethnic tastes. La Estancia is one of them, serving up large platters of meat as an Argentinian Steakhouse. Buyer/eater beware, there are a few cuts of meat that are outside the norm for most people who are used to the typical steaks (NY, ribeye, porter, filet, etc.).
Of course being at a Argentinian steakhouse, we opted for what seemed to be the large platter of protein goodness, aka the Parrillada Argentina, that most others in the restaurant were ordering. Slapped on a hot cast iron plate are 2 NY strips, 2 short ribs, 2 flank steaks, 2 argentine sausages, blood pudding, sweet breads, and tripe. My quick takeaways from this platter:
1. It is a lot of food. You may think it's a platter for 2, but really it could easily go up to 6 if you order some sides and other platters.
2. That said, the NY strips, short ribs, and flank steaks are probably most palatable to folks tastes. As you delve into the sausages, blood pudding, and sweet breads and tripe, you start to get some of that exotic Argentinian flare. So if you think you have pretty conservative tastes, keep in mind you might not eat all of those exotic cuts.
3. Sweet bread is not bread. It's a type of organ meat. If you are very sensitive to these types of flavors, beware! It's certainly not bad, but it can take some getting used to.
4. We swapped the blood pudding for another sausage, as we personally don't like to eat blood pudding (or anything of that nature).
That said, it may sound ironic, but I consider myself pretty open in terms of trying new foods and being able to stomach exotic styles and tastes. The sweet bread and tripe were doable for me, but I couldn't eat that many pieces - probably because I already filled up on the short ribs (delicious!) and NY strip (good at first, but sitting on the hot plate started to dry out).
They have a buffet-style salad bar, which has some nice pickled vegetables and cold pasta salads. Not your standard salad bar, but for those who like anything with a hint of Mediterranean, you'll find the salad bar much to your liking. It's not large by any means, but worthwhile.
Service is excellent, and unfortunately / fortunately that may be a result of the lack of patrons. We were there on a Thursday night and we were one of three tables seated. The server guided us through some of the popular entrees, but ultimately settled upon the large meat plate, because why not? We were unable to decide on which sides to get, but in the end the server threw in a complimentary side for us that we didn't get to try.
TL;DR: Most will be drawn to La Estancia by the large Argentinian meat platter. Bear in mind that there are a few meats on that platter that are not your standard meats, so if you know you can't stomach some of the more exotic cuts, it's probably more cost effective to order individually. The Short Ribs were delicious!
