Traveling for work sucks 98% of the time. You are stuck in airports, eating prepared meals, making friends with your Uber driver and cramping from the overflowing body in the center seat next to you.
Then there is the other 2%, like when you get to visit a one-of-a-kind restaurant like La Familia, located in the quaint 7th Street area of Fort Worth, Texas. When I come to the DFW area, regardless of where my meetings take me, I'll choose to stay in this historic and still trendy urban area. The first place I go while in town is La Familia, serving an assortment of traditional and unique Tex-Mex, something we don't have in our abundance of "Norteno" and Baja style locales in San Diego. So, La Familia is a must-visit if you are in the DFW area.
First, the ambiance is warm, and the have great AC when it's 98 degrees outside like today. The decor includes a montage of historical photos of Latino Texas from the 1920's to present day. There is ole t of seating to support both small and large parties, as well as an approachable bar that can support 20-25 people (10 seated) and a small patio out front with a few tables for those that want fresh air.
The menu is fairly priced, includes a number of high quality dishes (the Pork Shank Fajitas are amazing) as well as Kids Menu and Gluten Free options. The portions are "Texas sized" generous, so plan on taking some home. On a side note, each Wednesday is Fajita La Palma night, where the menu and marinade change to a special family recipe.
The staff was quite attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. My chip were served right away and my glass was always full. The owners are social and engaging as well. The attention to detail and making the meal an experience won't go unnoticed.
The bar offers a wide variety of cervesa, including both tap and bottle options, along with a full assortment of spirits and their trademark Flaming Margarita. Plus their Happy Hour runs 2pm-7pm Tues-Thursday with drink prices that are a throwback to the 1980's (yes, $2.50-$4.00.
La Familia rocks.
