La Finestra Sul Fiume, Valeggio sul Mincio, near Verona, northern Italy - Explore & Book

"There’s something bewitching about the Mincio river, which meanders languidly though the Veneto countryside, spawning legends of nymphs and sorcerers. It has held magical memories for Pietro Gandini since childhood, when his parents purchased this converted 15th-century mill on its banks, and it instantly cast a spell over us, too. Now an intimate and restful B&B run by Pietro and his wife Mattea, who cannot do enough to ensure you have a perfect stay, La Finestra Sul Fiume sits in lush gardens on the edge of small town Valeggio sul Mincio whose castle crowns the hill behind. There are just three rooms – two in an ivy-clad outbuilding at the water’s edge, another in a self-contained cottage at the top of the lawn – ideal for nature lovers and romantics. By day, dragonflies hover among the lilies while herons and swans pose in the shallows; come evening, aperitifs are served under a flaming sky as frogs croak in the reeds and fireflies glow like scattered embers. If you can pull yourselves away, you can stroll into the pretty village of Borghetto, explore Lake Garda and historic Verona (both less than 30 minutes away by car), or cycle through fields of poppies. But if you find the lure of lazy days by the river too strong to resist, there are plenty of deckchairs where you can lie back with a book and let the birds sing you to sleep. Highs Blissful gardens, with sofas under a large, shady gazebo, deckchairs on a jetty, and little islands connected by stone bridges, all illuminated at nightDelicious breakfasts, tailored to your tastes and served under the willows as swans and geese drift slowly byThe two suites are very spacious, and all rooms have independent entrancesPietro and Mattea (assisted by a troupe of friendly cats) are warm and welcoming hosts, full of insider tips on the region they loveA great area for foodies – Valeggio sul Mincio is famed for its tortellini pasta, and there are waterside restaurants a 10-minute walk away in Borghetto. Cookery workshops can be arranged, too Lows Rooms are comfortable rather than luxurious, with no TVs, and showers only in the ensuitesNo bar or restaurant, but eating out is easy around these partsNo twin rooms, though all can take an extra bed or cot if you’re coming with childrenIt’s best to have a car to explore the area, though taxis and bike hire can be arranged" - Abi Dare

A place of pure natural beauty, this is a truly special place! We feel completely in love that my partner and I had our wedding at La Finestra. I hope to be back again for future anniversaries! We stayed in the room which is in a separate little building which a really cosy room and would go swimming in the river. La Finestra is along a cycle path which is a 10 minute walk to beautiful Borghetto. You can also walk to the town Valeggio sul Mincio which has great restaurants and visit the castle Scaligero.

La Finestre sul Fiume was one of our chosen beds for the night during our honeymoon in Italy. We had imagined we would enjoy comfortable rests there between action packed days at Lake Garda, oh how wrong we were ! |We found and booked through I- escape. The directions were simple to follow and when we pulled up outside the gates and Mattea welcomed us with an enormous smile and we must have beamed back at her like Cheshire cats... Photos do not do this place justice. The gardens are an idyllic haven with perfectly positioned seating and tables, outdoor lighting and a river buzzing with wildlife. Our plans of day trips to lake Garda disappeared down the river as we uncorked our welcome bottle of bubbles and let any worries slip away..|It is set apart from the two nearby villages, but easily walkable to both. We had some incredible black truffle and smoked ricotta tortellini at a nearby restaurant. My husband enjoyed morning runs along the river whilst my very pregnant self lazed around reading books.|Mattea helped us arrange a pasta making lesson at a local restaurant and recommended a visit to the beautiful, local and enormous sigurda gardens which we really enjoyed.|Breakfast was served in the main house but we could have had it anywhere, sadly it was too cold for alfresco dining or river swimming for that matter ( a reason to return!). Breakfast was simple but delicious- really good croissants, fruits and jams and a great selection of teas. We could have asked for anything but we found we wanted for nothing.||Thankyou Pietro and Mattea, nothing was too much trouble, we felt welcome and at home in your beautiful home. We hope to return one day as a family ! |

I am not sure if I want to tell you how special this B&B is. There are only five rooms and maybe it will be too busy the next time I want to stay there!||The room was simple and stylish, with everything we needed and nothing we didn't. The gardens were idyllic, our hosts were charming and helpful and the whole experience was perfect.||Every day when we returned from our outings we swam in the river. Although there was a strong current, it was deliciously cooling after a hot day touring Mantua, hiking down Monte Baldo or cycling to Sirmione. Lots to do and the perfectly peaceful base from which to do it. Oh, and the best thing was river on the little island in the river every morning, with our toes in the cool, damp grass. Fresh fruit, bread and croissants with home made jam and delicious tea and coffee. Exquisite!

This is a gem in every sense, especially because it is so unique. The place is incredibly romantic, stunningly beautiful and since they only have five rooms, it is very quiet. Pietro will go a long way to make you feel home, and you will be able to enjoy nature pampered away by his exquisite hospitality. Breakfast is served on the little island, step away from your room, and you will feast on croissant and homemade jam while watching rare birds and incredible nature.

This is one of the most beautiful places I have ever stayed in. The setting is so unique. Having your breakfast on a little island with a river flowing past. My family swam in the river which was a lovely temperature and great fun. The rooms are not fancy but are perfect for our needs. You can sit and have a coffee or read in the marquee. There is a beautiful little village to walk to for dinner in the evening. |I thought it was closer to Verona ( 30 minutes drive) but that was my fault. We went to watch the outdoor opera in the amphitheatre. This was an incredible experience. |I will definitely come back to this place.

This is a romantic B&B place surrounded by beautiful nature and very well kept. We were guests to a stunning and romantic wedding here. A day and night to remember.||We stayed on the premise in an small and clean room with relatively basic and somewhat aged interior. All fine - this is what you expect. But if the price is the price of a good hotel in a big city one is surprised.

We, my wife and I, stayed at La Finestra Sul Fiume for several days during our last vacation on own own (before we expect our firs kid). ||||Normally I tend to explain in many word pro and con of a location - but here short list:||- very friendly and warm welcome by Pietro. Also during our stay Pietro gave us several very good recommendations for restaurants etc. (and organized reservations including special rate for his friends).||- Style of this place is outstanding. You can see that Pietro and his wife put very much love and time into this specific place. So in case you want to have a private party, this place makes you feel home (probably in a much nicer and higher level as we are all living in reality)||- Food - not much to say, breakfast is good, no big buffet which would not match the private atmosphere -.- instead you are seated next to the river with your loved ones and you can enjoy 100% the beauty of this place (river, nature, silence etc.)||- rooms - very nice and function + many books you can ready etc. - it felt more being at a friend vacation retreat than in a hotel!||- location - perfect, yes you hear the street (but not inside the rooms and the river might be louder than the street at any time), river perfect for a swim (or drift - just walk up the small connected island and jump in, wait 5 min and get out at the end of the private garden :-)||- location in general - I was even doing some running for several km which was ok.. at the evening you can walk to the next small town locate over the river, have perfect tortellini and a impressing view on the old bridge which reminded me of the two sisters from game of thrones. Also day trip to Verona and Mantua was easy to do (including borrowed city guide books and maps with recommendations from Pietro)||||Only problem for me - the more I recommend this place, the less the chances to get next time again a room :-(||||Probably best place I stayed so far if you want romantic hide away and relaxed days at a beautiful river where you can enjoy a nice book, good glas of wine and how perfect a summer can be||||Kind regards,||Thomas (& Resi)

We stay here annually, and Pietro makes us feel like family. La Finestra is a true gem, indescribably lovely. Enjoy the rejuvenating peace of this extraordinary property with the river running through it. Swimming here is balm for the soul, and the perfect work out. When you feel like venturing forth, Pietro will recommend the best restaurants, sights and shopping. Grab the opportunity to stay here. It is transcendent, and beyond a good value.
