We enjoyed our late lunch at La Focaccia. It was a lovely afternoon, just perfect for sitting at one of their little tables outside. The beautiful view of Santa Maria della Pace church made our experience all the more atmospheric.
Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. He provided helpful suggestions regarding wine and food and had a pleasant manner.
We started our meal with various "fritti" or fried foods. We ordered the incredibly delicious "fiori di zucca", which are mozzarella and anchovy stuffed zucchini flowers in a light golden coating; the traditional Roman "supplì", tasty rice balls filled with hot, gooey mozzarella; and the "zeppole ripiene con carciofi", mini fried dough focaccia filled with yummy chunks of artichoke. Each portion came with two pieces, which was just right to whet our appetites, but not completely fill us up. Next, we tried homemade pasta all'amatriciana, which was scrumptious, except that it had too much fat from the pancetta in the sauce and sat a little too heavily in our stomachs afterward. The pasta, however, was fresh and cooked "al dente", which was just right.
We also had an Ischia salad, which was mainly rocket salad, with some endive, tomatoes and avocado. It was enjoyable, but I wouldn't have minded more avocado and larger chunks of endive, instead of shaved.
We drank Satrico white wine with our meal, which was a good accompaniment, as it was light and fruity, but not too sweet.
Last, we finished off with a lovely strawberry and lemon millefoglie, which was delectable.
I would recommend this restaurant next time you're looking for a charming and authentic restaurant near Piazza Navona in Rome.
