La Folie Lodge, Don Daeng, Champasak, Laos - Explore & Book

"The isolated La Folie Lodge sits on Don Daeng, an island slumbering in the Mekong River, a short hop from Champasak in southern Laos. Owned by a French count, the lodge and its 26 stilted wooden bungalows plus a separate 2-bedroomed villa nestled among a lush tropical garden.La Folie pivots around its restaurant, which is dotted with carved elephants and looks out onto the inviting royal-blue pool. Sit with a cold drink and enjoy the tranquil sunset and mesmerising skyline, particularly the natural linga-topped mountain, Linga Parvata. Beneath this auspicious spot, the pre-Angkorian Khmer kings chose to build the magnificent Wat Phou temple. This Unesco World Heritage Site of stepped ruins complete with carved asparas and shivas, sprinkled by holy water and shrouded in the falling flowers of frangipani, is a beautiful spot. And you couldn't be better placed to visit; La Folie is just a short boat and tuk-tuk ride away. After a trip to the ruins, borrow one of the hotel's bicycles and tour around the 10km-long Don Daeng, past paddies, wats and baby buffaloes. Highs The double-hull catamaran boat ride from the mainland over to the lodge; you sit on wicker chairs and hold parasols Lovely light rooms face the river and the quaint town of Champasak, with bright Lao textiles, blackout curtains and private balconiesThe team are friendly and extremely helpful, always willing to please in the traditional Lao fashion.Small island setting allows glimpses into rural Mekong lifeEgrets and swallows dancing off the surface of the sparkling pool - a rarity in LaosHelpful bicycle map, plus markers on the island which help guests to visit the highlights, including the ruined Tomo temple Lows Due to the style of the bungalows, there is an issue with sound proofing, but we have since been assured that insulation work has slightly improved this issueThere are currently no minibars in the roomsThe restaurant is slightly pricey for the area, but supplies have to be shipped here and the portions are generousThe beach at the front of the hotel is a nice spot for a stroll, but best to keep the swimming and sunbathing at the pool" - Claire Boobbyer

One of the most wonderful places on the planet. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The resort is located on an island. However, the hotel provides a shuttle service across the river. The restaurant is very good and the rooms are the front yard to the Garden of Eden. The perfect place to relax after a tour through Laos. The resort is also involved locally by supporting local schools and providing its employees with fair conditions and training and education. There is not much to do on the island thogh, except perhaps a bike tour. I really enjoyed my stay.

The hotel is beautifully located on the banks of the Mekong. It was a wonderful experience to be on the very efficiently run La Folie boat that ferried us to and from the hotel.|What made our trip truly special was the hospitality and warmth of Mr Sam, and the team at La Folie. They served with a smile, were always willing to help and do whatever they could to make our stay super comfortable. It was truly 7 star service! |The rides and walks around the island were wonderful and the sunsets were glorious. La Folie is a haven of peace and tranquillity, highly recommended!

We stayed at this really nice resort on the island. It was a great place to come back to after sightseeing in Southern Laos, especially the swimming pool which had a great view across the Mekong and the sunset. The meals were a mix of Lao and French influence and really enjoyable. The island is also something you may wish to explore using the bicycles provided by the (you get the chance to see the local villages and also do some exercise). there was a family with two children who spent a few days exploring the island and just relaxing. To get there you travel in a long boat on the Mekong River. Highly recommend.

We (couple in our early 30s, from the US) would highly recommend La Folie to anyone traveling to southern Laos! The arrival alone is a memorable experience - crossing the mile-wide Mekong on the lodge’s beautiful wooden ferry is quite special - and then it gets even better once you are there. The centerpiece of the property is a gorgeous, open-air wooden lodge which was perfect for watching the sunset across the mountains, enjoying our meals and relaxing during a rainstorm. The pool shares a similar view. The island is large enough that you can easily spend a full day or more exploring, and it has a diverse mix of villages, forest and agriculture to see on bike or foot. There is also a lot to explore on the mainland nearby, including the country’s oldest temple, Vat Phou, local artisan workshops, and more.||During our four nights at the property, we truly felt like VIPs. Hotel staff, especially the manager Alom, were so attentive and helpful. The staff kindly arranged all the travel and logistics we needed, which included finding a family from which to rent a scooter from in Champasaak, off-road transport to Kingfisher Ecolodge and a taxi across the border for our flight from Ubon Ratchathani. The hotel also has excellent WhatsApp communication, which we found very helpful planning for the trip and arranging ferry rides to and from the property.||We were treated to multiple massages and would highly recommend their spa services (especially the Four Hand). The menu at the restaurant is well curated, with many tasty Lao dishes, as well as some more western-friendly options.||The rooms are well appointed, and like the lodge, feature solid, dark wood and high ceilings, along with covered decks from which to enjoy the view rain or shine. The beds are comfy, and the rooms have AC and ceiling fans (we found the ceiling fan alone was sufficient most of the time). In the room is a thoughtful guidebook about experiences on- and off- the island, as well as an explainer of how La Folie impacts the island economy, including hiring almost exclusively from the island. ||We loved staying here in the green season, and would love to comeback again!

La Folie is an amazing hotel on a very peaceful small island on the Mekong river. The staff is wonderful. Food is very good and tasteful. Rooms are great and the swimming-pool with an amazing viewpoint is wonderful. It is so relaxing to stay there.

We stayed at a hotel across the river, but took a boat to Don Daeng to see the island. We found ourselves at La Folie where the extremely kind and accommodating staff let us rent motorcycles and even taught us how they work and made recommendations for our tour. We made a circuit of the island and returned for lunch at the hotel restaurant, where again we received impeccable service in addition to delicious food and drink with an incredible view. During lunch, we even asked the staff to call our hotel and change some details about our boat back across the Mekong, and they did this without issue. When we are back in Laos we will definitely stay here. If they were this kind to four people who weren't even staying with them, imagine how they treat their own guests!

A lovely quaint colonial style river lodge run by the locals. Perfect to explore Southern Laos which remains safe from tourists. Sam is the star of the show.

What a fab hotel! The whole experience was amazing, from being collected in the hotel boat to transportation over the sandy beach by local vehicle to the door of the hotel. The staff are exceptional, from Sam and his co front of house colleague (sorry I forget his name) to the restaurant staff and cleaners, who quietly and efficiently kept our room and the hotel in pristine order. The staff are warm, friendly and professional and genuinely care about their hotel guests. Our room overlooked the Mekong and we watched the wildlife and water buffalo parading close by, from sunrise to sunset. The pool and lounging deck were a haven but if relaxing isn't your thing, no matter the hotel bikes are great fun to explore the island. We also walked and ran around the island to get a feel for the beauty of the place. The spa was also excellent and recommended for the ultimate relaxation. The food was delicious and although the wine list was limiting (typical for Laos) the cold local BeerLao did the trick after a thirsty day exploring the island or on one of the organised tours on the mainland, booked through the helpful and obliging hotel staff. We have travelled all over Laos and its neighbouring countries and this was a real gem to stay at. I can't recommend it highly enough
