3 Best Day Trips from Las Vegas | Condé Nast Traveler

"Vegas locals make it a tradition to eat at La Fonda, in the small town of Overton, on their way out of Valley of Fire State Park’s east entrance. It’s an unassuming restaurant with the kinds of gigantic portions you’d expect people might want to dig into post-hike. Think burritos and chimichangas with beer you buy by the bucket, and the fried ice cream that dominated Mexican chain restaurants in the U.S. in the 1980s. The scenery isn’t much to look at, but after a day in some of the most exciting natural surroundings in the world, you’re mostly here for the food, anyway." - Andrea Bennett

Staff is kind and considerate. The curtain you open to go to the bathrooms is dirty. The food is plentiful but not a lot of flavor. I ordered the chicken enchilada and pork tamale. The tamale was good but chicken enchilada and rice and beans had no flavor. The hubby ordered the fajitas. They were really greasy and had no flavor.

Perfect Post-Hike Meal Near Valley of Fire After a long day of hiking at Valley of Fire State Park, I stopped at La Fonda Mexican Food in Overton, Nevada, and it was exactly what I needed. The restaurant is a short, easy drive from Valley of Fire, located right on the main road in town with large, visible signage and a free, spacious parking lot, which is a huge plus after a full day outdoors. The restaurant was very popular for dinner, clearly a local favorite, yet the large, friendly crew was incredibly welcoming and hospitable. Service was a moderate pace, which was understandable given how busy it was, and I never felt rushed or ignored. They also accept large party reservations, though I visited solo and felt just as comfortable. The menu offers a wide variety of Mexican and American dishes. I ordered the ribeye burger, and it was outstanding — large, juicy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The fries were plump, crisp, and cooked just right. I also tried the nachos and guacamole, which were solid, but the real standout was the salsa — easily one of the best I’ve had, with fresh cilantro and amazing flavor. If you love margaritas, don’t miss them — they’re outrageously good and generously sized. For dessert, the flan was enormous, so much so that I had to take most of it home. It was the perfect sweet ending to an already fantastic meal. A huge thank you to the staff for working and providing such great service on New Year’s Day. I’ll absolutely be recommending La Fonda to friends and will be back the next time I’m in the area. Highly recommended if you’re visiting Overton, Lake Mead, or Valley of Fire — this is a must-stop restaurant.

Food was ok. Service was good. Atmosphere was stale. Doubt that I would return again. It wasn't worth the price.

Google
After a long day on the road, and at the recommendation of the desk clerk at our hotel, we had dinner at La Fonda Mexican Food restaurant. We were quickly seated and our orders taken. Our food was hot and plentiful. I ordered the Taco Salad. It was massive and I couldn't finish it. My wife ordered the Senior Taco dinnner. We both agreed that the food was average. It needed a bit more seasoning. Everything was OK and the place was convenient to where we were staying.

Google
What a great roadside gem. We stopped by for lunch while visiting the valley of fire. The service was. quick and the food was so good. The bathrooms were some of the cleanest we’ve seen in our travels!! We had the chilaquiles and breakfast burrito and would recommend both. Thank you for a great experience.

We've eaten here once and really love the food. Excited to go back

Google
Super fast service, lovely servers and amazing food. Such big helpings. We came in from Moapa Valley heading to Arizona and we have food for days!.so artistic and tasty! We had a Pacifico beer, Margaritas and Campechena and Carne Asada dish .

Google
Walked in and was warmly greeted, quickly seated. I asked for water, and out came a huge glass of ice water! Thank you! Food was delicious. Very authentic. I think the beans were homemade. The spicy salsa was awesome! Will definitely return.

Yelp
Bad service, despite 4 services. The food was cold, soggy and tasted terrible! It was a beef tostada!! This was my first time there in the 6 years of living here. Definitely, it's my last time. I won't go back... Bad customer service and terrible food!

Yelp
After a longgggg day at Valley of Fire state park we were starving. This is a very small town, the only things open was this and the McDonald's. We were a little reluctant because we are not from the area or Nevada for the matter. But, we were presently surprised with the service and food. Everything was very authentic and the portions were huge. I was happy to support this small business. (:

Yelp
The service was great, the people were very friendly and welcoming. We ordered our food to go as we were on a roadtrip to Utah. We ordered what we thought was going to be a shareable "snack" and didn't realize how much food we would be getting lol. Got the nachos and a quesadilla. The quesadilla came with a side of beans which I very much appreciated! Their food is definitely fresh and authentic. We would definitely stop by again!

Yelp
After a hot but wonderful adventure at the Valley of Fire, we were looking for a place to eat. We stumbled upon an unassuming Mexican restaurant, La Fonda, and had the best meal of our trip so far. Authentic Mexican food, simple but delicious. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Best Mexican food in Vegas? Drive to Overton. Worth it. Great authentic food in the middle of nowhere.Really really worth it!

Yelp
One of the only restaurants in the town of Overton was our options were limited to say the least. We were immediately seated when we arrived around 7pm and quickly greeted with water. Our server came over after 5 minutes and we advised we were ready to order since we were hungry after a long day of hiking! My mom ordered the shrimp tostada and loved it. I ordered the beef fajitas and they were so chewy I couldn't even swallow the meet. Since the server never came back to check on the food I flagged down a different server to let her know and she advised she could only give us 10% off the bill because my mom and I had already started eating the rice and beans that came as a side with my fajitas. I'm glad my mom liked her entree but mine was horrible so choose wisely.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I can here for dinner because we stayed across the street at Northshore Inn. There weren't any other options in the area so we were skeptical about the food but, wow, everything exceeded our expectation! Our server was Santiago! He was great and so sweet! We got the steak picado, steak fajita, extra guacamole (which we learned we didn't need to order because each of our entre also came with it), shrimp and fish taco a la cart, and a free Sundae for my birthday! The steak picado was so so delicious and flavorful! The meat was tender and the portion was huge. Shrimp and fish tacos were also good but I like the shrimp better. And the steak fajita was sizzling good! Nice clean restaurant with very comida sabrosa! I would definitely come back here again when I'm in town and would highly recommend this place!!

Yelp
Hard review to write because our other experiences have been good at La Fonda. We ordered 2 Senior plates. My wife ordered cheese enchilada and we asked the server to add onions to the enchilada. This was a very specific request. When the order came the onions were served in a separate plastic cup. No big deal right? The problem was when the bill came we were charged not only $0.99 for the onions but also $0.99 for cilantro. We never ordered cilantro, or received any. When I questioned the server about this charge she said she'd check and come back. She came back with another lady who stated the cilantro was put inside the single enchilada. We neither ordered or had any cilantro whatsoever in either plate. Besides, isnt cilantro a staple in Mexican food? My wife also had a margarita and I think they forgot to put in the Tequila! I finally just paid it because it just wasn't worth my time arguing. However, for a fraudulent $0.99 charge this restaurant has lost this Overton residents family's business. We won't be back!

Yelp
Quiet place but very comfortable, got our food in 10ish minutes. I got the SMALL carnitas nachos and my dad chile Colorado burrito. I absolutely LOVED mine, it was super big for being small and plenty to put me in a perfect food coma. Dad loved his, saying it was a great way above average burrito. Stopped by because it was the only Mexican food nearby and my dad and I were craving some. Stopped here and we ordered to go, our waitress so extremely nice and helpful. Would most definitely stop by here if driving through.

Yelp
Owner and server were friendly and the environment comfortable. Had a small bowl of the albondigas and an horchata (it was huge and cold ). $13. I asked for some lime and it made my soup perfect. Filling and both items were delicious. Walked my happy self back to North Shore inn.
google avatar

Kay S.

Yelp
The food was good BUT when I ordered the burrito loco which I love, I decided to add rice and beans this time. It went from $10 for the burrito to $22.99 for adding the rice and beans. Never again . This is a sure way way to ruin a business, when I asked why so much more for rice & beans they blamed the old owners. $12.99 up charge for rice & beans is ridiculous! I'll cook at home.
google avatar

Jessica P.

Yelp
The only place to eat in this town past 6 pm and right across from the inn so we ate here and weren't disappointed. It was plentiful and tasted great. Chips and salsa to start was a nice touch. My only complaint was the guacamole; the avocado stem was in it and it was tasteless: no salt or lime it seems. Kinda bland inside, too, but okay service.

Meredith H.

Yelp
Try making a decent tostada. When you pick up one side of it and it bends and dumps what's on top of it....it means you did a terrible job. We will stop wasting our time and money with you ever again. Thanks for nothing / nada. See ya.
google avatar

Keoni B.

Yelp
Blink or drive too fast and you'll miss this place. It's a great little restaurant. The food is delicious. I really enjoyed it. If you're in the area and are hungry then check it out. So good to have a "home cooked" meal.

S O.

Yelp
They sell sushi and burgers. Would not recommend. Service was good. Went during lunch.

Yelp
This is the best Mexican food you are going to find in Overton. It is also the only brick and mortar ethnic food in Overton as of now. It is not the most authentic or flavorful because they obviously cater to local costumers, but it's consistently decent. Thanks for being here La Fonda!

Yelp
Friend and I searched for places to eat after visiting Valley of Fire State Park and came across this little local Mexican Restaurant. You are welcome to come in and sit down anywhere with a menu on the table and server will come to you. They did take a while to take your order even though it was not too busy, but their server was nice. They gave chips and salsa as free appetizers while you wait for your food. I ordered the Asada burrito. Taste-wise, it was your normal steak burrito, pretty good, but then as I was halfway through my burrito, I found a bug squirming around on my plate.. I definitely had to stop eating and I let the waiter know. He took my plate, apologized and brought it to the kitchen. He came back and asked if I wanted a new burrito or to just take it off the bill. I ended up taking it off the bill only because I was worried I'd find another bug, but the burrito itself was tasty and cooked well. Also, they do have restrooms, but for the ladies, the door lock is kind of broken. It felt like anybody could easily push through the door to get in. It's a single person restroom.

Yelp
Love it! This is simplest the best Mexican food I had during my 10 day stay in the LV area. Service is good and quick and food is delicious! If you visit valley of fire state park, please make sure to stop by and grab a quick meal.
google avatar

Kris J.

Yelp
Delicious and large portions. Couldn't my chicken lunch flautas served topped with avocado slices and diced tomatoes. Nice staff too.

Trent H.

Yelp
Chicken in the chicken tacos was very bad did not even have a hint of salt no seasoning whatsoever gacuamole was very disappointing like green paste shrimp tempura was mediocre like frozen from Costco fajitas were actually good if you get anything get fajitas but they really need to work on a lot of things was also very overpriced 64 dollars for appetizer and two meals

Yelp
We visit Valley of Fire and the convenience place to stay overnight is in Overton. This restaurant is right across the North Shore Inn where we stay overnight so we didn't think twice to come for dinner. Services were good, social distancing enforced by skipping tables, I saw the server wiped menù one by one after being touched by customers. Food came out quickly but...it had no taste at all. My husband ordered Enchiladas and I ordered combo chicken taco and cheese enchiladas. They came with rice and beans. I thought it's easy to make Mexican food tasty with all the spices they have but in this case, it seemed that la Fonda didn't use any spices. It was tasteless beyond comprehension. I was so disappointed. Btw, if you are a foodie and ran in to this tasteless food, ask them to bring you some salsas or some spicy sauce, it will help a little.

Adam M.

Yelp
I've eaten here about three times, and I've enjoyed every meal. The salsas are tasty and have decent heat levels. I recently had the chicken burrito that was the special--really delicious. Ate beef fajitas on another occasion, and that may be one of the best dishes. Beef tacos are wonderful as well. It is an extensive menu, with maybe 30 entrees, and also a separate seafood section. Surprising for where it's located. Nice service as well. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Richard H.

Yelp
I just have to agree with all the other reviewers here....good authentic Mexican food, great personable service from lovely ladies and large portions of delicious food piping hot at reasonable prices. All very welcome after or before hiking out in that area, though I'm quite certain the locals are happy it's there. See my pics, loved our chicken enchiladas, chili rellenos, tamales...all of it, every bite...highly recommend, we'll be back!

Debbie W.

Yelp
We were traveling through Overton headed to Valley of Fire. Stopped for lunch. Was not impressed. Hubby had Colorado Burrito and said it was blah. I had the Asada burrito and it also had no flavor. I guess we are used to more zip in our burritos!
google avatar

Jason V.

Yelp
I'm surprised that this restaurant has received so many good reviews. It could be that I am from the DC area that the Mexican food out here is a lot better but I didn't really get the hype of this place. On the positive side they gave free chips and salsa with our order. I ordered the taquito dinner and everything was pretty bland to say the least. I've never have had bad guacamole until this day. The food was hot even after taking it back to our hotel room which was nice. But for $11 for this whole meal it was not worth the price. I'm sure that they get a lot of business since it's pretty much the only restaurant in the area, but I would not return.

Yelp
This restaurant was excellent. The staff was friendly and the food was superb. Portions were large and the food as very fresh. Definitely worth the drive off Route 15. Thank you YELP for helping us find this restaurant.

Yelp
Thanks for the entertainment ! Food is OK... service is laughable! Called to ask if reservations were required. They didn't ask my name until I said, "Do you need a name?" and when we got there no table was ready. Waiter who took our order took his mask down to talk which defeats the entire purpose of masking. We don't need to see your nose ring during Covid, dude. Asked if we could get a pitcher of margaritas and the waiter said "I can't serve them because I'm underage"..... mmmmm sooooo you have margaritas ....but we won't be getting any ? ?! Food comes. They set it down and walk away. No set ups..... asked one person..... then another ..... finally gets the utensils. We overheard staff referring to another as a bitch and saying " I don't care if I get fired, do you?". When we mentioned that we were scared to ask for help from one server because he just seemed annoyed, the one we spoke to said " Well... we're really busy...." mmmmm hello! It's Covid and you are at 50% capacity..... Asked for the bill twice and were told to wait because this other table has been waiting a long time .... it took us ten mi items to get a freaking fork! Can't wait to return to find out the next episode of The LAFonda telenovella!

Yelp
We were greeted by the owner and immediately seated. The place was kinda a hole in the wall and the food was fantastic.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a nice, authentic joint in Overton. We stayed the night across the street, so it was nice to just walked over. Perfect pit stop for dinner! The chips and salsa were so good! I got the bean and cheese burrito with red sauce and it was delicious. Definitely stop here if you are staying the night in Overton.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent cheese enchiladas we love them. The service was excellent super fast their food came out super hot what more do you want. Oh and by the way my wife says the bathrooms are extra clean.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. Reasonably priced. Large portions. In busy days, reservations are highly recommended. Overall top rating.

Yelp
Where do I start... out the handful of times that I have visited this business I have been disappointed on numerous occasions and not because of the taste of the food. The 1st time I was disappointed was when I ordered my order to go and it was supposed to be ready in 15 minutes. I handled some business and showed up 25 minutes after Just to find out that they had not even started my food because I haven't paid for it I sat in the restaurant for another 20 minutes just to get my food I was not happy. This happened again on a separate occasion but at least I did not have to wait 25 minutes I literally sat there for 5 minutes but the point is I order ahead and show up a little bit late so I know it's ready. Yet another time that is not ready. On a separate but last location I go there to feed my wife on another to go order and I spent $9 on my wife's meal which is supposedly comes with 4 meatballs. 4 meat balls is the limit. Which in my opinion is already bare minimum. When I got home I found half a cup of stew and 3 meatballs inside. Finally I could not let this be unhurd so I called the business and they said that I can come back and pick up that extra Meatball.... Seriously I have to come in like a poor orphan and beg for one meatball because you can't get it right the 1st time. 9 freaking dollars for a soup. To top it off the manager started talking about how she could not get decent help. Lady that is not my problem. You should change your business name from LA Fonda To La Gonda because I don't see this business here very much longer. I am very surprised they are not behind on rent with as much cutbacks at they are doing. One Mexican restaurant in town and I am very disappointed.
google avatar

Kristen U.

Yelp
This small town restaurant is very laid back but the food is very good. All the seafood dishes are something you have to try especially the Camaron LaFonda (bacon wrapped shrimp).
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
This place has excellent food, very good customer service, and the best margaritas that I have ever had!

carlos r.

Yelp
Came riding out to Logandale. Decided to stop by for dinner. Was pleasantly pleased. Will be returning when in the in the area.
google avatar

Sarah L.

Yelp
This was absolutely one of the worst restaurants I have come across. The beans literally tasted like dirt, the enchiladas tasted like rotting carcass that was tossed through a wood chipper. Super expensive for a basic meal, the decor and service wasn't that great either, service was worse. The waitresses and servers acted mentally incompetent, as if they couldn't perform the basics of human function, I really don't know how else to put it any more eloquently. I am just besides myself at the horrific lack of competence.

Cynthia V.

Yelp
Small restaurant vibe. Friendly customer service. The best micheladas in Overton! The mojara frita is amazing. 10/10 recommend. Michelada 10000/10 recommend.

Leah B.

Yelp
Food is great. Chimichangas, and seafood burrito ( chicken shrimp and beef) are my favorites
google avatar

Griselda F.

Yelp
So pleasantly surprised! The spot is very of the beaten path & I only found it because of Yelp! (YAY Yelp!) The very first thing I noticed was it was very nice & clean, nicely lit & we were immediately greeted by a friendly smile. We were brought 2 salsas (both delicious) one hotter than the other and some watery retried beans... but very tasty! I ordered the green chicken enchiladas and SO Glad I did, they were two FAT delicious chicken enchiladas, the sauce was delicious & the chicken was juicy & seasoned! Nothing worse than ordering a chicken dish with bland, flavorless chicken. It came with Spanish red rice (decent) and refried beans that were very yummy! Their portions were so large I was not able to finish my second enchilada... so sad because it truly was so delicious! Also! Loved the the selection of authentic Mexican sodas, my favorite being the Sangria, I always ask for a glass with ice and limes... the BEST! I can't wait to be back in Overland & back at La Fonda!

Lauri C.

Yelp
Stopped in during a road trip and was very pleasantly surprised! From the salsa to the Mexican rice to the enchiladas! The best!!!

Mo L.

Yelp
I'm giving this restaurant 2 stars only because it seems very clean. Other than that, eat here because there is no where else to eat in this town. Even the salsa is bad. They are nice, though.
google avatar

Justin S.

Yelp
Service is a little slow. Food is really good. Large portions. Can't go wrong here if you're stopping in or you are a local.
google avatar

Jimmy G.

Yelp
Passing through on the way to Los Angeles. Family style Mexican. Super nice folks. Had the beef fajitas for one and it was plenty for two people. Large portions! When you order a beer they bring you a frosted chilled mug along with the bottle. Place is very clean and well lit. Food was tasty.

Michelle C.

Yelp
We go to this restaurant quite a bit. My favorite entree is the number 26 which is a tamali and a cheese enchilada. It is so good. A friend of ours ordered the incredible burrito and he thought it was so delicious.. He could also have it for lunch and probably dinner the next day haha.
google avatar

Peter K.

Yelp
We go here pretty often. We love the owners and staff. They are friendly and really get to know all their regulars. Overall the food is very good however depending on who's cooking it can be inconsistent.
google avatar

C J.

Yelp
The food was good and reasonably priced but the service needed a little help. The waiter did not really know the answers to the questions about the menu. Waited a while to pay the bill because the cashier was busy on the phone taking orders. It seemed they could of used more help and it was not at all crowded.
google avatar

Katie B.

Yelp
Great little family run restaurant! Sizzling Fajitas and chicken Molay were delicious! The vegetarians in our party had plenty of delicious options- crisp tender veggies. We are used to Tex-Mex and so this was a different cuisine but just as yummy!
google avatar

Jeannette S.

Yelp
Amazing great food great service nothing to complain about!!! The smaller beef player is amazing and so is everything else. Don't forget to have margarita yummy

Wendie G.

Yelp
Ordered tacos, got flipping soft tacos. If I wanted a stupid soft taco I would of asked for it. This isn't the first time I have gotten a wrong order but since we live in the Moapa Valley we don't have much of a choice. It will be a long time before I go there again.
