Solo Travel Fueled My Writing Career—Then the Coronavirus Happened

"I even made friends with the owners and staff at a small hotel called La Fortuna. Atitlán began to feel like a place I would keep coming back to."

One of my favorite hotels of ALL TIME! The setting is idyllic. The food? Spectacular. The massage? Incredible (shoutout to Blanca!). There were adorable cats and dogs running around the property and the volcano views right in front were gorgeous. We boated around and saw lots of other properties and by far La Fortuna looked the most peaceful and modern. The outdoor bathroom with the tub and candles was also SO relaxing and much needed after our Volcan Acatenango hike the day before. The staff were so friendly and there are only 5 guest houses, making the ambiance quiet and personalized. I can’t wait to come back!

I had an absolutely stunning time through and through at La Fortuna. It is a beautiful property that cultivates the magic of the lake. The staff (especially the front desk staff) was extremely helpful, kind, and attentive. The landscape of the property is gorgeous and truly provides a feeling of serenity and wonder with the different types of plants and trees. The rooms are incredible - every detail is thought through and so comfortable. And finally the food was delicious! It's not traditional Guatemalan food, but each evening the dinner is prepared with fresh ingredients and you can tell the care that goes into it. For anyone who is thinking of staying here, I 10/10 would recommend. It's a little oasis on the lake with 5 star service and accommodation.

Our 3-night stay at La Fortuna was nothing short of magical. Tucked away on the shores of Lake Atitlán, this place truly is a little paradise. From the moment we arrived, the level of service and care was outstanding. Every team member went above and beyond to make our stay exceptional, and the communication throughout was flawless. A special thank-you to Enrique, Brian, the Chef, and the entire staff, they each contributed to making our experience absolutely perfect. Whether it was the thoughtful touches, the delicious meals, or the serene atmosphere, everything came together to create a wonderfully relaxing and restorative getaway. We highly recommend La Fortuna to anyone seeking peace, beauty, and genuine hospitality. We can’t wait to return!

We had such a great stay here! Enrique was awesome and the whole team was so friendly and helpful every step of the way. They were awesome in assisting us booking travel and private boats, and providing advice for the rest of our time in Guatemala. They even packed us up delicious to-go breakfast burritos for our early departure! Everything we ate here was fantastic, from the 3 course steak dinner to the Cobb salad and sandwich for lunch, we loved every bite! The deluxe suite 5 was such an amazing place to stay, the views are tough to beat, with open air shower overlooking the lake and the comfiest bed we’ve found here so far. Loved the Smoky Piña and QuetzalTiki cocktails, and the underground wine cellar is so cool with a huge selection. Thanks so much for having us, we hope to return soon!

We had the best stay at La Fortuna. We had been looking forward to this stay for quite some time and it most definitely lived up to the expectations. We had the deluxe suite #5 and were absolutely stunned when it came to the views and attention to detail throughout. The only downside to this suite was having to go downstairs to use the bathroom in the middle of the night with stairs that are VERY steep with no handrail, which isn’t a major issue at all but worth noting. We celebrated my birthday and had the most incredible breakfast. The dinners in the main lodge were so great, we met some of the coolest people at the communal table and made memories we will cherish forever. They have a little outdoor gym which was a lovely surprise which we used on our second day. We also used the free kayaks which was again - another appreciated touch they provide. Last but not least, the ENTIRE staff was wonderful (special shoutout to Enrique, Isabel & Casino). Thank you!!

We had an incredible 3 night stay at La Fortuna in the deluxe suite 5 (highly recommend!!). All of the hosts were so accommodating. The drinks were delicious—have Isabel make you a Smoky Piña 🍍! From the sweet doggies to the absolutely gorgeous bathtub (which btw fills FULLY with plenty of hot water) to the hot thermos of fresh coffee every morning, you cannot go wrong. It is so private, quiet, and relaxing. The design is impeccable, and the service is prompt and so friendly! Be sure to get a massage. Ours were the best we’ve ever had (and we get a lot of massages!). We will absolutely be back to La Fortuna!

My wife and I came here on our honeymoon for 5 days. We had an amazing experience in Suite #1! The place is beautiful and provides a very private and serene experience. One of our favorite parts was having hot tea and coffee ready for us on the porch every morning so we could enjoy waking up and ready outside with a view and warm drinks! Everything was amazing from the staff to the food. We absolutely loved our stay and want to come back! The staff also does a great job coordinating travel with you and we felt like it went smoother than we could’ve imagined getting there from Guatemala City airport. THANK YOU!

Highly recommend! You can only get to the hotel by boat. We had an Uber driver that said he can just drive us directly to the hotel. He tried and you can’t. La Fortuna gave us specific instructions on how to get there so that was our fault. When our boat stopped in front of La Fortuna I was like; Is this our hotel? It definitely has curb appeal from the moment we walked into the warm reception area we were handed a refreshing aloe vera drink and the NICEST staff. The rooms are so cool nestled in the jungle, you have all the amenities and the air smells so good! Coffee and breakfast being delivered to our porch every morning while looking out over the lake was a treat. To get a water taxi, you walk to the end of their pier and wave a red flag 🚩 and if the boat taxis have room they come and get you! I loved the boat rides hopping around to all the towns. The Guatemalan people are warm and friendly we never felt unsafe or unwanted. Would love to come back! One suggestion be prepared for a long car ride that twists and turns to/from the airport. It’s worth it. 👌
