"The dim lights, chicken-wire dividers, and salvaged chairs are the first sign you're not in a traditional tapas bar. The second might be that steak at the table next to you, which is literally engulfed in flames, or that Caesar, which comes with a pair of shears—you'll be using them to chop the salad. Better suited to a sit-down tapas feast than to a quick stop on a longer crawl, La Gabinoteca feels like a destination restaurant. These tapas are as much about style as they are about substance—and they deliver in both categories. Gratinéed razor clams, enlivened with a kimchi cream, have been on the menu since day one—one taste, and you'll understand why. Whoever your dining companion may be, rest assured he or she will be impressed." - Benjamin Kemper

Google
Really good food for a reasonable price. We went to have lunch and the menu was great. We got Gazpacho, grilled artichokes, hake, duck taco and pasta with foie. Great choice

Terri Stefanson

Google
Wow! Best food I had in Spain. I was there mid day and ordered the menú del día. The first course was the most sublime cold green tomato soup. My second course was a delicious small meatball sandwich, and the third course was merluza with tomato salad.

Google
Really cool place, tasty food at good prices. Cool venue! Would definitely go back!

Google
Great food and super nice service. Food presentation is very “special”. Great place to go to with friends.

Nick Goshgarian

Google
Great atmosphere. Some dishes were excellent (get the potato egg truffle dish) others weren’t (skip the duck tacos)

Patrick Luciano

Google
Very cool interior and creative versions of tapas. The staff was very friendly. Great to go on a date and to share stuff.

Andre Carioca

Google
Definitely go for the Navajas (by far the best dish in the house) and also give it a try to the Pato taco. Both of them are the best items in the menu. Trust me

Google
Had the scallops, duck tacos and razor clams but could have ordered so much more as it all looked delicious ;) What I had was excellent and full of flavour. Service perhaps a little slow but once they got going it all went smoothly. Definitely a spot to return to.

Yelp
The food was amazing and the service was top notch. We ordered a total of 5 different dishes, a pitcher of sangria and a desert. The tapa dishes were all very good. We ordered a salad which was a very unique dining experience because it came in a pot with scissors. You cut pieces off and topped it with chicken and egg plant it was honestly really cool. Next we had a Spanish pancake which was ok I personally wasn't crazy about it but it was good nothing crazy though. We followed this up with the croquets which were small but very tasty filled with ham and cheese. We then had the Potito or Baby Jar. It's egg mixed with truffle and garlic in a small jar. It was one of my favorites so much flavor in this dish. It went really well with the bread they serve. The duck racks were also very good nice amount of different flavors from all the assortment of toppings they bring you. The last tapa we had was the star of the show. The flaming steak was amazing m. The perfectly cooked steak was seasoned to perfection and they literally brought a fire to your table when they cooked it. I was in love with this dish and would definitely recommend it as a must have. For desert the last thing we had was the crema de queso. Definitely an interesting take on desert. This place is amazing one of the best dinner experiences I have had. Thank you Anthony Bourdain!!! Pro tip: this place is kind of hard to find. It's immediately next to a restaurant with a black cat on its front door.

Yelp
Looking for a late night "snack", (just before midnight) we walked around the corner from our hotel and discovered La Gabinoteca, a quaint Tapas restaurant featured by Anthony Bourdain on his show "No Reservations". The restaurant was not extremely packed, but it was lively. It took a minute to find someone to seat us, and once we were seated our waiter told us we had about 10 minutes to order before the kitchen closed, although they advertised being open until 2am. We kept wondering why everyone was looking out at our table from the kitchen but no wait staff came over until finally we realized there was a buzzer on our table that we could use to summon the wait staff, get our check etx. When the waitress came over she was friendly and assured us we had enough time to order what we wanted from the kitchen. She also tried to speak English as best she could to explain what the dishes were. We ordered some typical tapas - Ravioli Burrata, Chicken Wings, Croquetas, Gyoza of Ropa Vieja, and Duck Tacos. The tacos were flavorful and the Gyozas were delicious. The other tapas were just ok, didn't stand out any more than others. I did not like the texture of the Ravioli and it is a cold dish so seemed bland to me. I thought the food was good overall, but it did seem a little pricey.

Yelp
Nice place, with a different design. We went for dinner, and had: caesar salad (which comes in a different way, very nice by the way); vieiras tapas and navara. The lettuce from the caesar salad was not very good washed, I could find some bugs eggs on it. The chicken was fried. Vieira and navara were good, but they had too much cheese on it and I couldn't really taste them, the cheese flavor dominated. It is a good bar for Happy Hour and for the public that enjoy fried dishes.

Yelp
Wow, what an amazing find and recommendation by a random dude I met on the train. He started chatting me up about the awesome tapas and drinks at La Gabinoteca and he was not wrong at all! I visited on Friday night just thinking I would grab a quick glass of wine, but after looking at the plates I decided to order the not your average casear salad. I was unsure what I was getting myself into especially when they brought out two flower pots. One of the flower pots had a pair of scissors sticking out of what looked like leafy grass and the other pot had pieces of lightly breaded chicken and what kind of looked likes grilled onions. A plate was placed in front of me, so I did what I thought I should do--dump the lettuce onto my plate and commence to cutting it up, literally. I cut up some lettuce, while adding some chicken, "onions", and dressing and commenced to mixing. After making a mess I put some of the lettuce back in the pot and started eating. Everything completed each other very well. The chicken and sauce were not too salty and the lettuce was thick and fresh. What I was unable to discover was what was with the chicken-- if it was onions or some othet type of vegetable. Whatever it was, it was amazing and a little sweet and went so well with the rest of the salad. As I ate the salad I took sips of my glass of rosé wine, which was slightly sweet and complemented my salad very well. They had a variety of wines and spirits and tapas on their menú, which comes in English and Spanish. For dessert I had their chocolate moose, which is so rich and chocolately. In between the richness there are little chunks of brownie, which were a nice surprise! Every bite just melts in yout mouth!! I have to also mention how cool this place looks on the inside. It has dim lighting throughout and their are various levels. I sat on the bottom floor at the bar, but as I looked up their were stairs to one part of the restaurant near the hostess. Then in front of that there were other stairs to another seating area. And then next to me there was seating in a hammock that had a long chain that hung from the ceiling. Everything was decorated with metalics. Such a cool place to just look at. I did love that I sat at the bar as I was able to see the staff making every thing! The care and dedication that they take to make the food is outstanding. Every dish they take their time at and it tastes delicious. I plan on returning here next Friday when my mom comes to visit me. The atomsphere, the food, and service are just amazing! I felt very well taken care of by the staff and even the manager came by and said hello. Definitely recommend this spot!!

Yelp
This place is spacious with nice trendy interiors as well outdoor seating space. The fact that they have a chairlift for people in need is pretty amazing. My husband and I made reservations for lunch but that didn't seem necessary. They had the menu in English, which is helpful. We got the Salmorejo and Ravioli frio de burrata to start with. Both were delicious and I would highly recommend it. Then we got the Garbanzos which was good but nothing to rave about. El tartar de Salmon was good and the Carrillera had a pretty strong taste. Im not too sure if I liked it. Crema de queso dessert was the winner of the entire meal. Overall service was a bit on the slower side but very pleasant and cheerful staff.

Yelp
That Anthony Bourdain-sometimes he picks great spots, sometimes not so much. This place? Interesting food, pretty space and nice servers. Food wise-unique, pricey but not the best... I had the famous baby jar-which included an egg, potato fries and truffle that you mix in together. It was different but I could only eat it all with bread!! A bit too strong, perhaps? Btw, they place bread on your table and charge you 3 euros for it, fyi!! The cuban-style white rice dimsum was super tiny and cute. It was good but pricey. As for the kryptonite-it was a green ice cream with strawberries, and they used nitrogen to freeze it. They also gave a sheet of paper explaining how people who buy it are also having the restaurant give 30% of the proceeds to a charity (pic attached). Sadly, it wasn't good at all so I could only stomach half of it.

Yelp
Wow! One of the most memorable restaurants during my trip to Madrid! The ambience was very hipster/trendy and the food was oh so good! We ordered the artichokes, razor clams, and steak on fire. Everything had such unique flavor and I could not help but crave to eat more and more. My mouth is watering just remembering my meal. Service here is also attentive since each table has their own buzzer for the waitstaff. There are options for the waitstaff to come to you and for you to request the check immediately. Will definitely come back the next time I find myself in madrid

Yelp
Anthony Bourdain mentioned this trendy tapas restaurant on "No Reservations", so I had to stop by while in Barcelona. It's located far away from tourist traps. Like most of Spain, it doesn't get boisterous until very late, i.e. after midnight. It was empty, quiet and laidback around 7-8 PM. We even saw young parents dining indoors with a sleeping infant! It was that quiet. Not a fan of the sneaky way they served us bread without telling us they'd charge us for it later. There's no such thing as complimentary anything in Barcelona! We ordered El Potito - the baby jar containing egg, potato and truffle oil. It was good, but not thaaaat good, like all the reviews here suggest. The DimSum was pretty good, but pricey - the price listed on the menu is actually for just one piece, not two. The Kryptonite dessert (percentage of the proceeds goes to a kids charity) had a great presentation. A waiter came out in full character: Dressed as a superhero, he recited a monologue about his mission with Star Wars music playing in the background. The dessert itself wasn't good, but the entertainment aspect was worth it!

Yelp
I almost wanted to be nice and give them three stars but I wanted to stay true to myself as a foodie. We ordered a lot things and nothing was outstanding. There was a duck with tortilla wrap dish that was trying to mimick Peking duck and it was really bad (too wet too sweet). The desert was also disappointing because they brought out complicated presentations and just left for us to figure out. The service is also on the slower side, so we had a 2.5 hours dinner unintentionally. I do like the presentation of food (too cool for me to understand) and the ambiance (pretty hip), but as a foodie, it wasn't all there.

Stephen N.

Yelp
La Gabinoteca is a hip restaurant hidden within a neighborhood. It is off the beaten path where you will not find many tourists. This restaurant has a young hip clientele. The food is good and not overly priced. I had the deep fried artichokes, the ravioli, the tuna, and scallop tapas. All the tapas were good, but had too much salt for my taste, but most people would be fine with it.

Lauren B.

Yelp
Just go here. The food is amazing and completely reasonably priced considering the quality, inventiveness, and detail that goes into it. Service: Since we didn't speak Spanish, in a meaningful way, it was a little difficult for us to communicate with the staff, but they were always open to working with us, which is always appreciated. Also, I wanted a Vodka con Aqua ye Lemon, which is NOT heard of in Spain, so even with the language barrier they made sure I was satisfied. Food: We really splurged here and had the Foie Brûlée, Stilton, Foie Gras "Ravioli", Lightly roasted flattened shrimp topped with caviar, "hot dog", and a cream cheese dessert (see pictures). I found everything to be amazing but would suggest the "musts" would be the Foie Ravioli, flattened shrimp, and this egg/foie dish that we tried to order but must have been lost in translation. The table next to us ordered it and we were jeal. See Pictures

Yelp
Simple and unique place in the Chamberi barrio. Thanks to Anthony Bourdain for putting it on the map. Had a wonderful diner/ authentic tapas and drinks. Particularly liked the hotdog or should I say the "perrito caliente con pedigree". The home-made foie gras was amazing. Casual and eclectic deco - you need to try the ski lift :). Only one little thing, if you could have a menu in English, this may be hard for some people to get all of it.

Yelp
I love Bourdain but I did not realize he'd mentioned this place. We went because it had good Yelps and it was near our hotel- the Hesperia Madrid. I was very pleased with our meal- though the best thing (and possibly the best thing I had in Spain) was the bread tapa topped with seared scallops and slow roasted pepper confit. OMG- it was melt in your mouth fantastic. If I hadn't already ordered the baby jar (potatoes, poached egg and truffle) I would have ordered another scallop- but I just couldn't eat any more. My husband had the squid sandwich and liked it- basically a fried calamari sandwich- what's not to love? We had the bread pudding for dessert- I think I smelled essence of orange- wonderful, whatever it was. Wine was great too. Service was friendly and helpful. The restaurant is cool- inside seating is fun and there is outside seating also. We had 2 glasses of wine, 2 sparking waters, 3 tapas foods, and dessert- and our bill came to exactly 40 euros. You should go here if you're in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Enjoyed our late night dinner there on a Wednesday night. The place was packed. I was really impressed with an " English friendly" menu. My Spanish is really poor and I didn't have to search for unfamiliar words on the internet to order food. Staff also spoke good English. The food was phenomenal. I would highly recommend yellow fin tuna and burrata salad.

Tim H.

Yelp
Great modern dishes. Saw it on a Bourdain show and was not disappointed after eating lunch here. The best food I had in a week in Madrid. Almost all the dishes we had were great: potito - potato, egg, truffle in a jar baby squid cream cheese dessert oxtail ragout with pasta boiled at table homemade gourmet hot dog dim sum - ham and egg

Adam W.

Yelp
La Gabinoteca was a great random choice for dinner in this part of Madrid. Had a few tapas - - Jamon croquettes: ok, I've never been a huge fan of these as they always seem too oily - Burrata relleno: good, a ball of Burrata hollowed out and stuffed with peppers, tomatoes, dried fish and herbs - Potato, truffle and poached egg in a jar - absolutely fantastic, they stuff those three simple ingredients into a jar and have you mix it with a small spoon. Quite delicious. - Scallop bruschetta - I really enjoyed this, the scallops were well cooked and paired nicely with a tomato jam - Oxtail ragout - this was the highlight dish... An incredible oxtail ragout served in a claypot, and then you are provided with a squeeze jar of a parmesan liquid with the instructions to squeeze the liquid into a bowl of hot water - creates noodles. Then after draining the noodles from the water, add them to the ragout and enjoy. Incredible... And the best part of the whole meal - we didn't pick any of this, just asked the server to bring us his 4 or 5 favorites!

Wen Y.

Yelp
Really friendly service despite the fact that neither party spoke each other's languages very well. Decor was probably the coolest I have seen in a restaurant with fun little details. The food was great - we ordered the Galician steak, pizza, potato egg truffle in a pot, artichokes, bacalao in a cup and a couple of desserts. We even went with our 5 year old and 11 month old and they were totally cool with it. I don't known if I'd go three nights in a row like a previous yelper but I definitely did enjoy it. Four stars because my husband wasn't impressed with the steak or bacalao.

Yelp
OMG. This place is AMAZING!!! and so frikkin cool too. My bf and i had just arrived in Madrid and were starving. I hopped on yelp and started looking for places near our hotel to eat at. Somehow i stumbled upon La Gabinoteca. I started reading one of the reviews out loud ... I said "Anthony Bourdain" and just like that my bf was sold! I must say i was a bit skeptical bc I'm not one to venture out and sometimes ultra fancy food is just not that great to me. But to my surprise everything was awesome. So awesome that we came here for 3 nights in a row (every night we were in Madrid) Dorks! I know! But its that good. Standouts: The Potito: Stupid good!! Oh my! Lasagna: If it was socially acceptable to lick the plate in public, i would have. So flavorful! Black Caipiroska: Simply delicious and oh so cool. Black vodka, whaaaa?! Arroz con Leche: Awesome presentation... altho it was a bit too sweet.. but i'll take it! All in all pretty much everything was great. The plates were inventive, fancy without being pretentious. The place is super cute, trendy and lively. Be ready to wait a long time if you get there late. Perfect place for a date or to come with friends. I still have Potito dreams and Caipiroska wishes. LOVE!

TC W.

Yelp
Wowsaurs! This place makes me very tapas happy in a tapas world. Not too expensive for portion size, and delicious. My gf liked something but she's being rude right now and not answering me. (Mad about something I dunno) My killer dish was the potito. The potato and egg. Holy crap batman! Yes eat this again and again if you'd like. I would if I could but I'm back in LA :/ This place was very good. A perfect lunch spot IMO. Dinner too I'm guessing, but we came here for lunch. The waiter service is controlled by a device on the table. When the button is pressed it pages the waiter on his watch. Cool.

Margery H.

Yelp
A little pricey but definitely delicious food. Don't be fooled - the servings are extremely small so make sure you order multiple for each person. Most waiters know English. Chill, hipster atmosphere. Kitchen closes earlier than bar.

Pia M.

Yelp
Hate to say this, but it's mostly hype. Had the potito, alcachofas, burrata and the cream cheese dessert. They were good but not great. The ambiance, on the other hand, I love.

Michael J.

Yelp
This place is an international fusion of surf and turf that is on par with the culinary talents of Austin TX!

Yelp
Though my wife and I are old enough to be the parents of everyone else in the restaurant this past Saturday night, we enjoyed an exceptionally fine meal with personable, gracious service. The hostess seated us without reservations in the almost packed restaurant, and we agreed to vacate the table when a party arrived for a later reservation. They apparently arrived even later than expected or were seated elsewhere; hence, we were not at all rushed. Our dishes ranged from kale to pork, razor clams, and chocolate. They were all prepared creatively and presented beautifully. Even with a very nice bottle of wine and two after dinner drinks, la cuenta was quite reasonable. We followed the recommendations of our waiter, whose English was much better than our Spanish. We are glad that we did. In sum, we had an outstanding dinner prepared and served by a first-rate staff in a most welcoming environment. We recommend this restaurant with no reservations.

Arek S.

Yelp
Eclectic Spanish gastropub. Food is uniquely excellent and rich (bread is there for more texture and to cut the heaviness). Eating here (unless you practice self-control or are bulimic) will add a couple kilos to your love handles or rump guaranteed. The place gets extremely busy so either make reservations or plant yourself early at the bar. By Spanish standards early is any time before 9. Highly recommend the foie brûlée and the gambas dishes.

Jacqueline C.

Yelp
Try their scallop con pimiento tapa! Can't go wrong with their tapas but we didn't like their lubina(sea bass); Dessert was good, but nothing exceptional! Awesome design and decors in the restaurant!

Caroline A.

Yelp
Our first real dinner in Spain was at La Gabinoteca. And it was fantastic. We had seen the restaurant on Anthony Bourdain a year ago and had been counting the days until we could have a meal there. Despite being on American television, there were not any other tourists there (at least that we could tell) besides us, which is kind of cool. We love dining with the locals. The scene is trendy, hip and lively. Since they don't take reservations, we got there on the early side - about 9ish and our group of four did not have to wait for a table. The restaurant got really crowded and busy at around 11. Full of young 20's and 30-somethings, La Gabinoteca is a great place to people watch. You'll see gorgeous young girls with their equally gorgeous novios, all well dressed, glowing and having a great time. We sat downstairs by the bar, and had a great view of the whole restaurant. We weren't able to understand most of the menu, so we got a variety of different dishes. My favorites were the Bruleed Foie, Truffle Ravioli, Corvina Tartare and the Beef Cheeks and mashed Patatas. All small portions, but share-able. Our first server was not the nicest, but then got friendlier as the night went on. I loved the little button on each table, where you could "buzz" your server if you needed something. A bit dangerous when you have four girls and multiple bottles of wine. ;) Overall, we had a lovely time here. I highly recommend it.

Nom D.

Yelp
Remember that scene from THE FLY where Jeff Goldblum can't eat like a human anymore so he regurgitates on his food, it liquifies, and then he sucks it back up. Now think La Gabinoteca. Several of the dishes here have been turned in to geriatric-ready drinks, which is a fun trick the first few bites, but after that I felt like a teething baby looking for my Sophie-giraffe chew toy. Pampers!!!

Mark V.

Yelp
Place is legit. Food was inventive and reasonably priced. Word on the street is that service can be kind of snobby, but we stood at the bar, and our bartender was really nice, and she was on point with our orders. She was happy to serve us despite the busy atmosphere of the place. I would like to get back here again and try more from their menu.

Tom H.

Yelp
Awesome restaurant. Really fun and unusual setup and great food!

Luca B.

Yelp
I have eaten here multiple times and will continue coming back for more. The ambiance is young and fun but still sophisticated enough for a romantic dinner or a group of friends. The food is the star: the menu keeps changing but is featuring revisited, eclectic Spanish tapas. Presentation is modern and always surprises you. My favorites: the Cuban Dim Sum and the Burger Tartare. You usually end up paying 35€ each for 3/4 courses without wine. Incredibly high value for money. Highly recommend it.

Indah N.

Yelp
Great unusual tapas dish and atmosphere!! Had lunch and dinner there several times, and love everything I ordered!

Nosniv X.

Yelp
Recommended by a friend, and then bolstered by the high yelp rating I decided to give this place a try on a Wednesday night. The interior is cool and trendy with mismatched tables and chairs and 2 levels of open floor plan. They didn't have an English menu, but the waiter was able to translate most of the items. The Artichoke and Foie were excellent, but the rest of the items were lackluster. The mixed vegetables were overly salty, the Potito, was nice and being served in a jar was original, but the taste itself left me wondering what all the hype is about. Also had the pizza, ravioli, and the chocolate cake. We sent back the initial wine our server recommended. The server was a little confused on what to do, And after a few minutes discussion with the bar downstairs they took it back and brought a different wine. The service was pleasant, but they have these call buttons on the tables, which notify all the servers via an earphone and by displaying the table number on a watch like thing, so they are constantly distracted by this to see if a table in their section is calling. The doors open at 8 and you can grab a table and nurse your drink until the kitchen opens at 8:30.

D G.

Yelp
The decor was very cool and the vibe seemed trendy (in a good way), however the food was disappointing. We ordered an El potito which was gross, a tapa de vieras plancha which was decent, an ensaladilla rusa which was actually good but not great by any means, one la no autentica ensalada which was fun to eat and my favorite meal if I had to choose one and lastly one alcachofas fritas which was okay. This restaurant is on the pricey side and the drinks are way over priced. My one gin and tonic was 13,50 Euro. The server was nice and the ambience cool hence 2 stars.

Gary P.

Yelp
Great food. Had the duck taco, razor clams, scallop bruschetta, gyoza, and the little jar -- all fantastic. Not a miss in the lot. Great service too.

jeniffer a.

Yelp
Travelled to Madrid and went out looking for this Anthony Bourdain recommendation. The place is not close to the center of the city so you have to travel a bit to get there. We were there before kitchen opened so their menu was limited. We tried 3 of the dishes that Anthony Bourdain tried: Taco Pato, perrito con pedigree and El Potito. The dish sizes are very small, nothing really left an impression on me, nothing remarkable. The only sort of interesting ingredient on the perrito con pedigree was the crunchy onions they add on top the rest is just a regular boring hot dog meat and bread. The pato taco was boring, flavor just ok. My favorite thing was probably the Potito and i think is pretty much the truffles that make this dish, i love anything with truffles. I would say the place decor/ ambience is cool, food presentation small but good, menu is creative, actually sounds better than the actual food. If you are in the area and need a drink stop by but if you are far from it, not worth it to go out of your way to visit.

Mojo F.

Yelp
Went there last march, from the "wine list game" to the food everything was great. We went there for dinner and enjoyed it so much that we went back the day after for lunch. Dishes like the Perrito Caliente, the egg and truffle, the wines by the glass, the decor.... I recommend it highly!!!
