On the Grid : La Gourmandine

"A taste of France in the heart of Pittsburgh specializing in delicate pastries, savory sandwiches and melt in your mouth croissants. A favorite spot among Pittsburghers to grab a croissant and coffee. Be sure to get here early and beat the weekend rush as the line normally extends out the door." - Ashley Fennell

Google
I had 1x croissant and 1x almond croissant. Both were delicious. I would recommend the almond out of those two. People from my party got an apricot croissant and ham & cheese croissant, as well as bacon, onion, cheese on focaccia bread (not sure what they called it). Everything was great. Prices very reasonable. For my two croissants it was just under $7.

Google
Very cute coffee shop and bakery (with WiFi). The pastries were artisan and beautiful. No breakfast sandwiches or traditional meals, but the pastries were great. They do have quiche. Lots of teas and coffees with milk substitutes. Reasonable pricing.I walked, it doesn’t look like there is much street parking.

Google
What a cool spot! My family loved the pastries we tried from the super flakey chocolate croissant to the amazing texture of the guarmandise and the cheesecake like texture of the cherry dessert my husband got. Plus the man working at the front was so so kind answering our questions about what each item was since they are sophisticated in their names and even gave us recommendations on other spots to check out around town. I want to go back and try their drinks and other goodies.

Everything looked incredibly good. There was a line when we arrive (Saturday morning 10am) but it moved very quickly. The playlist was the vibes, the service was quick and great. Would love to come back again! It looks small when you walk in but there’s additional seating outside as well.

Google
I got 2 danishes ( raspberry and peach(?)), and quiche and oh MY GOD. so SO SO SO SO good. I have been raving about this all day. I saved the danishes for post first and second class and my jaw is DROPPED. So good :)) Also got an iced caramel latte :) very yummy

This is a very interesting Google Contribution. I always say I like to express these in love and light. The only way I got to eat here was by a generous gift from a woman on the PRT Bus 🚍 a few days ago. She was very kind and I explained to her if I ever see her again and I have the opportunity I will repay her for the $10 gift card ✅. The amazing thing is at La Gourmandine, I was able to get a very nice meal and leave a tip for under $10 👀 I will attach photos ASAP ✅🙂 EDIT: Pics attached March 29th ~ TY

Google
What a lovely experience! Came here right as they opened and had an excellent cappuccino with a great, authentic almond croissant! Texture is kinda like a smashed down croissant but truly different and great flavor, definitely a must-try!

Google
Delicious, authentic French desserts! 🇫🇷 A absolute MUST in Pittsburgh… I would recommend the Marquise, Èclair au chocolat, choux a la crème, tarte aux framboises, and the sandwich baguette. Definitely going back! Wheelchair accessible! ✅ Show up early if you want a seat inside!Limited seating outside.

Yelp
Oh YES!!!! Real French pastry. Fabulous eclairs and cream filled pastries, danish of all kinds. We were on our way to the airport so we picked up some delicious looking freshly made ham and cheese sandwiches on French baguette with butter--can't wait for the plane! Coffee was awesome. staff super friendly and accommodating. Wish we had known about this place a couple of days ago but oh well! Two thumbs up, definitely go here when you are downtown!

Yelp
Incredible, no notes! Okay well maybe a few. This location is really nice, with some sidewalk seating and an open and airy space. I stayed and read some of my book and ordered with multiple people, and everyone was super nice and enthusiastic. I also appreciated that I was asked whether I wanted my treats in the same bag or separate. The chai was delicious, and I had the almond croissant. Absolutely scrumptious, expectations were met and exceeded. It just tasted like actual almonds. It was a tad on the sweeter side for my personal taste, maybe less powdered sugar? Chocolate croissant could use some more chocolate chips for us chocolate lovers! And the plain croissant was had the next day -- still in great condition.

Yelp
Super cute French bakery. We ordered a selection of pastries, but my favorites were the little chouquettes! Soft choux pastry balls with pearl sugar. Delightful and perfect with my cafe mocha. The people were very helpful and communicative. Only slightly annoying this was seating. All tables for two and my party of three sat outside because there wasn't enough space inside. I'd totally eat here again next time I'm in Pittsburgh though!

Yelp
This location of La Gourmandine is located in downtown. It is smaller inside, but it does have plenty of seating inside and outside. I was there for a short visit and got the almond croissant which is one of my favorites of theirs. The staff is always super friendly!
google avatar

Karolina K.

Yelp
Amazing French pastries. Didn't had a chance to try coffee as they don't offer decaf.
google avatar

Amanda L.

Yelp
They have a wonderful selection of pastries, tarts, baguettes, and drink drinks. You order at the register and pick up at the end and there's a little bit of seating inside and out. It's quite quaint. Their black iced coffee is fabulous.
google avatar

Yelp
Many delicious selections are available and freshly made at La Gourmandine. Very friendly staff and efficient service. While the interior is small, there are still plenty of seats available even when we stopped in at peak lunch hours. We're glad we made the trip and will certainly be back the next time we're in Pittsburgh.
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
Mediocre bakery with staff that doesn't know anything about coffee and has an attitude problem. The line is long and honestly not worth it. Plenty other places that actually care about your money and will serve you properly with better croissants and coffee.
google avatar

Kira H.

Yelp
Everything in the case looked delicious! I tried the flaun, cream puff, and chocolate croissant and they were all good. The chocolate croissant was my favorite! Will definitely be coming back soon to try more.
google avatar

Yelp
I stopped by this morning on my way to work and my coffee was SO SO good! I got an iced caramel latte with oat milk! While I did not get a pastry, there were so many options and they all looked phenomenal. The inside is super charming and a great place to enjoy a coffee or tea. It also is in a great location for walking around the city. Not sure of the parking situation.

Yelp
Having just returned from France & Italy, i have been looking for authentic pastries here in US. This meets it, flaky, fresh, excellent. I would recommend if looking for a great pastry.

Yelp
Charming atmosphere, gorgeous, decor, and wonderful food and service! A perfect slice of Parisian paradise in the middle of Pittsburgh!

Yelp
So glad I stumbled upon this bakery!! I am a sucker for an almond croissant and their Croissant Amandes is perfection! I ordered two so I could have one in the morning and thank goodness I did! I also ordered the Choux à la Crème and it was also a 10/10! Will definitely stop by here again!

Yelp
We wanted a quick coffee after arriving in town. This was the closest to our hotel. I'm a sucker for French bakery, especially chocolate croissants! we got an ice mocha latte and a chocolate croissant to share. It was so good. We enjoyed our treats at the local dog park in the shade and it felt like we could have been in Paris for a short few minutes. To me the perfect croissant is flaky and you get this soft crunch of dark rich chocolate mixed with each bite. The buttery texture melts perfectly each bite. So obviously I am fan of chocolate croissants.

Yelp
Where to begin?! I found the warmest little bakery snuggled in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh! A true culinary treat for the senses with not only absolutely delicious baked goods and treats, but creamy quiches, flavorful daily soups and sandwiches and the best lattes outside of Italy! I cannot rave enough about the warm, welcoming and kind staff! Cheery & knowledgeable instead of the worn down nasty cold faces at Starbucks- this bakery is a MUST TRY! I settled on the quiche Lorraine, perfectly flavored and served hot, the choc au pain took me back to my French vacation, layers and layers of light fluffy croissant with a perfectly semi sweet chocolate filling- a dream! I over heard another gentleman say "this is my favorite place in Pittsburgh" and boy do I agree! As an ex-Starbucks employee, I can not rave enough how good my latte was! Props to these guys, they are going above and beyond with spectacular customer service to boot!

Yelp
Each time I'm in Pittsburgh I make sure to stop for a sweet treat! Even when the line is long it moves fast, and I've always met some very kind fellow line-waiters to talk with about what drew us to the bakery. The staff are very kind. While there is not much seating it's very cozy and feels like you've been transported to a true European cafe. I have never been disappointed in my selection whether sweet, savory, or a mix of both!

Yelp
OMG! I absolutely adore this place, everything I order is divine. The Parisien Sandwich is unbelievable. I am pretty picky about my sandwiches and was very skeptical that something so basic could really be that delicious and WOW - it really is amazing! Their bread is so flavorful and paired with the butter and ham it is just unreal. I cannot recommend enough! All of the breads and pastries have been excellent and the Chouquettes?!?! What?!?! I don't know how those taste like little bites of heaven but they do and you'll want to order like 3 dozen - you're welcome :)

Yelp
Our travels took us to Pittsburgh today. We wanted to try a nice breakfast cafe that wasn't a chain and came across Gourmandine! I'm so happy we did. Upon entering, the cafe is small and narrow, and the menu!ambiance that resembles a French cafe.. pretty accurately, I must add! Different Brioche breads, tarts, macaroons, cinnamon rolls, and pastries were spread out for you to see. The staff was very patient while we asked questions and decided. I went with a cinnamon roll, and my wife went with a pastry with chocolate and vanilla cream. Both pastries were on the sweet side but delicious. The portions are generous as well! The coffee was very good to compliment each pastry. Their prices were very reasonable. The staff was very friendly. The food was very tasty! I definitely would recommend trying them if you are in the neighborhood!

Yelp
My BFF had searched for pastries in Pittsburgh before we came here for our trip and this was also the #1 spot to try. We can see why! Everything here was delicious We split a slice of the Quiche slice Vegetarian (we ate it before taking a photo, but it was so good) and 3 different sweet treats. The quiche was light and airy, but bursting with spinach and goat cheese. We tried the seasonal Tarte à la citrouille (pumpkin tart) and omg it was so good. I wish I could take one back home to Indianapolis, but I don't think it would travel well in the car that long. It was the perfect filling to crust ratio and was perfectly spiced, with a very rich whipped cream topping. The perfect fall tart! We also tried the Tarte au citron and, like the pumpkin tart, it also had the perfect filling to crust ratio. It was tart and true lemon flavored, not an overpowering, citrusy cleaning product flavor that you often times get with poorly baked lemon flavored foods. Lastly, we tried the Abricotine, an apricot danish that was buttery, flaky, and not too sweet. We loved every bakery item that we had. To wash down all of the delights that this business has to offer we each had a large chai latte and it was tasty and warming for our walk out in the rain. We will definitely be stopping in here before we head back to Indy to get some treats for the road! I wholly recommend grabbing a pasty and coffee/tea if you're in the area.

Yelp
Downtown Pittsburghers rejoice - French style bakery and Cafe is right here. So many awesome baked goods here as well as coffee. I ordered a délice de pistache (kind of like an éclair, but pistachio flavored). Light, fluffy, crispy, just delicious. The iced latte was amazing (whole milk, so a bit of a splurge). Brought home with me a loaf of bread ("pain de mie") which was stodgy and perfect for sandwich (or smacking period). There is indoor and outdoor seating if you have time to eat there. Terrific food, friendly service - doesn't get better.

Yelp
Wonderful pastries. Awesome staff. Cool neighborhood. Stop in for a treat. Who could ask for more...

Ann D.

Yelp
Ordered the choco armondin croissant. Prefer more than the choco croissant. More chocolate filling. Very flaky and rich. Lots to choose from. Including bread rolls and faccosha breads with good toppings.

Yelp
Although the building is small, there are some seats inside. Very nice inside. The presentation is flawless. The taste of everything was absolutely amazing. I didn't get pictures or the names bc I devoured them. But I recommend EVERYTHING on the menu. Also, it was packed, but they got us through quickly.

Yelp
The best food with the best service!!! Love to try something new every time and I am never disappointed. Everyone there is accommodating and kind, and the lunchtime rush proves that this is the best cafe downtown.
google avatar

Yelp
I ADORE La Gourmandine. Everything is extremely reasonably priced and delicious. Eclairs: Perfectly chocolaty and soft. Almond Croissant: Flaky and delicious. I love almond pastries. Prosciutto and Cornichon sandwich: My FAVORITE EVER. I wish they always had this available because it is genuinely perfect. Raspberry Macaron: I think the price of this is insanely good for how big, pretty, and tasty it is. I would absolutely recommend anything from this place!

Yelp
The first thing you notice when you enter the bakery is the smell. We were already in a line at 8:58 AM before the bakery opened and I can tell you that the smell was exception and so was the almond croissant. Must try bakery in Pittsburg!

Yelp
4.5 stars overall. La Gourmandine is a French bakery chain that has a few locations in the Pittsburgh area. I have visited all of the locations, and I really like all of them! So far, I have visited this location in downtown Pittsburgh one time. I saw bread loaves and rolls, croissants, lunch sandwiches, pastries, tarts, beverages, etcetera! Please see my photos for a view of some of their baked goods. My husband and I selected three baked goods, and an employee promptly packaged them. We asked for pineapple juices, but they were out of stock, so we bought orange juices instead. The employee said that they had no forks but did have spoons, knives, and napkins. She accurately rang up our purchase and thanked us. We sat at a table and chairs inside the bakery. Here are our reviews for our foods and beverages: Abricotine - $2.50 - 4.5 stars - This pastry had a flaky and buttery crust and was topped with half an apricot and some vanilla cream. Tarte aux framboises - $5.30 - 5 stars - This tart had a crispy crust and fresh, tart raspberries. Pain au chocolat - $2.90 - 5 stars - This croissant was flaky and contained some chocolate. Canned orange juices - $1.60 each - 3.5 stars - These canned orange juices tasted a little too sour.

Yelp
The croissant and quiche were out of this world and prices are reasonable. Great experience!

Yelp
One day I need some coffee and want to sit down, glad I found this French cafe. Everything looks so good, sandwich looks good, pastries looks good and the drinks taste wonderful.
google avatar

Alexandra A.

Yelp
this bakery has many European style pastries to choose from if you enjoy trying new things! they also have a drink menu with coffee and lattes, but i would say they are more heavy on their bakery goods. there is also a good number of seating and tables to do work on especially if you're a college student or working from home. the ambient is really peaceful especially when you don't mind smelling a bakery aroma and staying a cafe vibe! this place def is on my list for places to study at!
google avatar

Adam H.

Yelp
These folks do a fantastic job at ... wonderfully presented and flavored baked goods. Plus, they honor Yelp check-in offers, which is something many places tend to ignore these days. I live more than a thousand miles from here, and chances are -- I'll not have the opportunity to patronize this joint anytime soon. If I lived here, however, it would be a regular stop.
google avatar

Tanya M.

Yelp
Excellent! Had the ham and Swiss croissant and it was amazing. Husband had the quiche and LOVED it. Great vibe, easy stop.
google avatar

David N.

Yelp
They have a relatively small selection of baked goods, but everything was very good. The prices were much lower than I'd expected. You can get a nice sandwich or quiche and a drink for ~$7, which is about half of what I found for a simple tasty lunch anywhere else in the area. Be sure to grab a pan au chocolate (or particularly the one that also has almonds!) or a baguette for later! I wish the coffee were a bit better, but it's not a coffeehouse and isn't claiming to be one, so I can't really fault it on that.
google avatar

Mark H.

Yelp
Was great had a slew of things here and everything tasted great. A bit expensive but it's a French bakery so kinda expected I recommend the macarons
google avatar

Ashleigh M.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic French bakery offering an assortment of patisserie- to include some savory options like quiche. The quiche Lorraine had the smoothest, creamiest texture I have ever had- and the crust was expertly crafted. Coffee was fantastic and definitely the preferred option to Starbucks not too far away. Staff was warm, welcoming, and kind to everyone I watched walk in the door. Worth a visit if ever in the downtown Pittsburgh area.
google avatar

Yelp
Great French bakery with multiple locations. This was my go-to breakfast stop to start my day, every day on my visit to Pittsburgh. Everything was delicious. Ham and Swiss Croissant was perfect, but the Flan was the star. It was AMAZING. It tasted like a big slice of pasteis nata. Heaven.

Lauren D.

Yelp
This location is horrible. Placed an order on DoorDash. Received the wrong order. Ordered 2 dozen chouquettes. Received TWO in total. Savory items were thrown in a bag with sweet pastries which then tasted like the savory items. Pastries with jam were thrown in a bag with packaged Madelines that were then covered in jam. I was going to bring the Madelines as a gift to a friend this afternoon. Called the location to let them know what happened and all I was told was "Alright thank you" and they hung up. The guy on the other end could not care any less. Completely dismissive. Totally unacceptable preparation of the order with inability to do follow a simple order of 6 items and inability to package bakery items with common sense. Pathetic and rude customer service. Will be sure to let everyone I know not to go to this location.
google avatar

E A.

Yelp
Fresh baked French style food. Try the jumbon croissant. Good coffee and fast service
google avatar

L W.

Yelp
Excellent service. Jam packed display case of tempting baked goods. I selected the almond croissant and quiche. Both very good, fresh and perfectly sized.

Michelle W.

Yelp
The croissant with strawberries, whipped cream was devine. The fruit pastries were chef's kiss.
google avatar

Yelp
The staff is friendly and efficient. The atmosphere is relaxing and comfortable. This coffee shop has excellent pastries and coffee and is exceptionally clean.

Yelp
This bakery was authentic with beautiful pastries, friendly service, and great coffee.

Yelp
Very chic french bakery with so many choices! All of the desserts are as beautiful as they are tasty. They have excellent chocolate croissants and everything is fresh. The staff is very friendly and knowledgable. A go-to when I need a little treat!
google avatar

Rim G.

Yelp
Favorite bakery in Pittsburgh! I can't recommend this place enough. Their food is amazing. Croissants - I recommend Pannier Framboise & Gourmandine above all. Pastries - I love their Fraisier cake, tartes & macarons. I like their madeleines THE BEST! Service has always been great & fast. Ambiance is good in the Downtown location since there is space and it's cozy. They have a good reward program for you to get $4 off after you spend $60. Not too bad. Definitely a good destination for a tasty yet not too expensive birthday cake. Highly recommend if you haven't tried this place yet.
google avatar

Lai S.

Yelp
The almond croissant is a MUST!! Place is small cute and has a cute vibe/ambiance! Service was great, went there 2x during my 2 day stay-- got some of tomato puff pastries to bring back for coworkers!

Owen D.

Yelp
Awesome Croissants & Excellent Pastries. Not to mention the better than France French Baguettes!

Yelp
La Gourmandine, I love you so much. I may have had every menu item (that doesn't include meat) since they opened their first location in Lawrenceville. My most visited locations now are near home in Mt. Lebanon and this downtown location, which is right next to my office. For lunch I may get a Caprese sandwich on their wonderful baguette, a slice of their obscenely rich vegetarian quiche with goat cheese and spinach, or a slice of their crusty focaccia pizza (not sure if they still carry this, but I hope so because it's so good). For breakfast it's all about the pain au chocolat or choco amandes pastries. And they have recently expanded their hours so you can take treats home after work, which yesterday was exactly what I did with pumpkin tart, apple tart and the new l'automne, featuring butterscotch mousse with pecan custard and vanilla sponge cake. You simply cannot get a bad item here. I'll add more photos from over the years if/as I find them in my archives!

Richard W.

Yelp
What a treat. Wonderful pastries at a reasonable price. We had: flaky, buttery croissants: a lardon ( bacon and cheese on a fluffy bread). The winner was a gourmandise: a croissant stuffed with vanilla cream and chocolate chips. Scrumptious. Close runner-up is the chocolate eclair. Everything in the case looked delicious. The staff were fun and helpful. Each time we visited there it was hopping. Hope to be back in the area soon to visit again.

Yelp
I got a croissant (qua-sön). My girlfriend is so pretty I'm not sure if I was drooling over her or the croissant (qua-sön). Soft, sweet, comforting, curvy, warm... is the way I'd describe my girlfriend. The croissant, also soft, sweet, comforting, curvy (less curvy), warm. When it comes to breakfast, I'm a complete opp. I hate breakfast - I'm one of those kids to never mix two colors of play dough so it doesn't get all weird colored and wacky. That has nothing to do with my review, but thought it was important to the exposition of my character. These croissants (specifically the almond croissant) filled with the only nuts I want my mouth on - oh so tasty! I don't like breakfast and I tried justifying eating it by waiting till 11:30 to make it my "lunch" but those croissants got me acting foolish. La Gourmandine- I really love you and I hope your nuts (almonds) stay firm!
