La Grande Roue de Montreal is Canada's tallest Ferris wheel at 200 feet (about 20 stories high). It's very similar to the Ferris wheel in Atlanta, where I'm from, because they're the same height, colored white, and each has exactly 42 climate-controlled gondolas. The manufacturers and model types are different though. Both are relatively new with Atlanta's Ferris wheel opening in 2013 and Montreal's Ferris wheel opening more recently in 2017.
La Grande Roue de Montreal is located in Vieux-Port or the Old Port of Montreal, a popular tourist attraction. The Ferris wheel has good views of adjacent Old Montreal, downtown Montreal, Mount Royal, and the Saint Lawrence River. The wheel is situated directly on the river. There is plenty to see and do in the immediate area so you can definitely make a morning, afternoon, or night of your visit.
The Ferris wheel itself was built on a sort of mini "island" at the port. A small park surrounds the wheel with modern and clean facilities including a restaurant, cafe and ice cream parlor, gift shop, and restrooms. We stopped and had coffee and ice cream at the cafe. The ice cream was delicious (recommended) and service was good.
The Ferris wheel is open year-round, day and night, rain or shine. At the time of writing this review, tickets cost $25.00 per adult and $19.50 for students, seniors, and ages 3-17. Packages are available for families, those wanting VIP gondolas, yearly passes, and more. The ride lasts about 20 minutes. The ride was busy, but the line wasn't long during our Saturday visit around 12:30pm. Like other amusement parks, Fast Passes are available for an additional fee. You do not have to book or reserve a time in advance. Just show up and pay.
Unless you purchase a private or VIP gondola, you may get put into a gondola with strangers.
If you've been in one Ferris wheel, you've been in them all. The size of the Ferris wheel and views are different, of course. Nothing about La Grande Roue de Montreal significantly sets it apart from other Ferris wheel parks I've been to. The cabins are clean and comfortable with cushioned seating. After the ride, you're filtered through the gift shop and cafe for photo ops and whatnot.
While I don't think La Grande Roue de Montreal is a must-do activity in Montreal, it's certainly not a bad addition to an itinerary that already includes the Old Port and Old Montreal; a plus for the city.
