"Predecessors of the Aztecs ritually sacrificed untold thousands of enemies, prisoners, and citizens in Teotihuacán to please Huitzilopochtli, ensuring that the god would allow the sun to rise another day. Today, after a midday tour of the now-archaeological complex under the blaring sun, however, you may kill for some shade. Luckily, a quick walk from the grounds is a bar and restaurant shielded from all sides: La Gruta is literally in a cave. Since 1906, visitors to the ancient city have cooled down and worked off their post-visit appetite in this little-known subterranean restaurant that’s 650 feet from the famous archaeological site. The impressive space is decorated only by its own natural features. Sun pours in through the upper reaches of the cave during daytime, while at night hundreds of candles cast a warm glow about the cool, echoey space. The menu boasts an extensive selection of pre-Hispanic specialties such as tlacoyitos (corn cakes smothered in anise-flavored green sauce), the more adventurous escamoles al epazote (ant larvae with wormseed herb), and traditional pit barbecued meats ranging from rabbit to goat and lamb. A word to the wise, however: While no tourist-trap, La Gruta’s beautiful setting is the main draw and surpasses the quality of its dinners. Fortunately, there’s no shortage of mezcal and tequila across the menu if you wanted to stop by for just a drink." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Know Before You Go While the space does fit 700, you're best-suited with a reservation. Note as well that the temperature does drop 10 to 15 degrees underground, so it wouldn't hurt to bring a light jacket." - cjstephens, lukefater

Food: very mid, it’s your typical touristy spot where you go for the atmosphere. I got a steak taco and the cactus was sus, but the homemade tortillas were amazing! Service: fast service and welcoming, came with no reservations and sat us within 10 minutes Atmosphere: the cave is AMAZING and beautiful

Beautiful restaurant inside a cave. We went during the weekday and there was no wait time. Costumer service great. Due to the consequences of our own actions, we were still stuffed after brunch but still wanted to come here for the experience. We had drinks, appetizer, and a dessert. All was good. As per prices, I would say you pay for the unique dishes and experience and it’s worth its price.

Very interesting spot, just a quick walk from the pyramids you have a place you’ll likely not see anywhere else. Service was good, food was not all that we expected. The mole had good flavor but everything else was mediocre. Location is the key cool factor, worth visiting once.

Obviously in a place like this, the scenery does a lot of the heavy lifting. But that’s not to say the food wasn’t great, because it was. But the thing you’ll likely remember after eating here is the incredibly unique setting of dining in a cave. We didn’t have reservations but were still able to have lunch here (it wasn’t a busy day at the pyramids so we suspected it wouldn’t be too busy), but getting reservations would be safer.

Ambiance is amazing. Service is solid. Food was ok. Escamoles, Platón Mexicano and mole were the best. The chips were stale although homemade. The vegetarian entree was a ton of veggies in a tomato sauce with very little flavor. Adding salt and lime helped. Drinks were good. Would recommend but don't expect the best meal of the trip.

Very overrated place with average food We had no reservation but managed to get a table at 11am. I couldn’t have cellular network and the wifi they provided didn’t work. The servers were always very busy to serve you The food were a disappointment. The salt I got from the grasshopper Margarita and the grasshopper tacos would make your kidneys sick The bbq chicken in a clay point was very very tough The ant larvae was the best among all food We paid over 2500 peso for a disappointing lunch

Beautiful experience especially after waking the pyramid grounds. This restaurant has a large selection of delicious nutritious food. The waiters were very knowledgeable about the menu and very attentive. The decor and design is unlike no other! I would highly recommend this place for anyone in the area, 10/10 would recommend.

Such a unique and cool dining experience! After a spectacular visit to the pyramids, La Gruta is only 7 minutes of walking distance away. We were so amazed by the setting of this restaurant in this cave with colourful chairs. The staff wears traditional clothing. Starting with drinks, the sangria with vodka is beautifully served and tastes amazing. The sour prickly pear water is refreshing, and the Tempus Dorada is a great artisan Mexican beer. It’s crisp and golden with creamy foam, and has a subtle malt sweetness, perfect for hot weather. Recommended dishes: GOOSEFOOT TOWER FILLED WITH FRESH CHEESE, which is a banana croquette filled with fried beans and soaked in tomato and pasilla sauce; it’s salty and aromatic. We had the WILD MUSHROOM AND SOUR PRICKLY PEAR soup. It’s sour, with the right amount of spicy. PORK BELLY WITH MACHAMANTELES MOLE was rich, juicy and tender, grilled banana, yellow sweet potato and chayote root brought sweetness and freshness of the dish. FIRE-GRILLED FLANK STEAK was smokey and flavourful, with a roasted cactus and onions with seasonal beans, it was earthy, slightly tangy, complemented the meat perfectly. After meal, we were handed a small candle to put inside the cave, which was a great experience! This is a must try if you are visiting the pyramid of sun & moon.
