These Ancient Italian Towns Have All the Tuscan Beauty and None of the Crowds

"A cozy café tucked beneath a stone and wood-beamed arcade near one of the town’s ancient gates, where patrons can shelter from sudden rainstorms while sipping a Campari and soda and watching life pass in the adjacent piazza — an ideal spot for relaxed people-watching in the medieval center." - Gina DeCaprio Vercesi Gina DeCaprio Vercesi Gina DeCaprio Vercesi is a New York-based writer with a passion for adventure, history, and conservation. We dined here on a Tuesday night, a reservation certainly required if you want a spot on their balcony (fits about 4 tables) which offers a nice view of the sunset. They had a menu of the day which was based on locally sourced mushrooms which were in season. Staff were nice, friendly and warm. Pasta was top 👌

We went here for lunch. The waiter bullied 2 of us into getting the Mexican burger. It truly was the best burger. I’m glad he bullied us. The fries were also great and the little dipping sauce was the best ever. Bravo, chef! I’m now 40 billion miles away. But the next time I’m in the area, I’m coming back just for that meal.

Atmosphere and views are amazing, yet staff didnt let us have a drink and forced us to have food. We didnt and left, not very hospitable..

Went for dinner on our final day in Italy. Everything was fantastic up until it came to paying. My friend (who order steak and chips) was then told the two items were separate, despite having been told that they fell under the same price. We also then were told about the footnote that it was an additional 2.50 euros to order, and since we were paying separately, that ended up costing an additional 10 euros. In the end, what was meant to cost €21.50 cost €29, and the sum total exceeded €100 much to our horror given we’d only ordered drinks and 1 entree each.

Super sweet staff. The tartar with smoke Haring is amazing! We eat carbonara and risotto and tiramisu, and we loved it all. Definitely recommended!!

Very nice place by the square. There was some music playing and at some point live musicians across the street. The food was good and traditional. The staff was super nice. Price were very reasonable too.

After the climb to the Duomo di San Christoforo, it's very relaxing to have a cool drink in the loggia of this bistro. The pasta helps with hunger. It tastes homemade.

Yelp
Probably one of the best restaurants in Barga. We loved it so much that we went twice for lunch during our trip to Tuscany. Right in the heart of Barga, the menu is packed with traditional Tuscan classics alongside a few modern surprises (I spotted tacos). We ordered pasta both times and it was phenomenal; the bolognese alone is what convinced us to come back for round two. You can immediately tell this is a local favorite, which is always a great sign. Even on chilly November days, the place was buzzing with locals every time we stopped in. The staff was fantastic as well, and we even got the chance to chat with the owner. And the ambiance was just lovely. There's a balcony overlooking Barga, and I am still wishing we'd snagged one of those tables (sadly they don't use that space during colder months). Prices felt very fair for both the quality and portion sizes. A spot I'd happily return to without hesitation.

Yelp
Ok so this was my favorite restaurant and cocktail location in all of barga. First of all the food was amazing. The owner of the restaurant has been a chef for 20 years and He did an amazing job curating a menu that I was stoked about. The food all had so much flavor and was absolutely delicious. I had the pesto pasta, the ravioli, tacos, appetizer and my favorite wine is amarone. They had an amazing vintage. I highly highly recommend getting a bunch of different things. Now that was the food aspect. I want to also write a review for the owner. This man is an angel. I got a flat tire in the middle of the day on a small side street and I barely speak Italian and didn't know what to do. I tried calling a bunch of places and had no luck. I went to caffe capretz to get some food I told Gian Paolo the owner what happened. In the middle of his rush lunch hour he looks at me and says I will leave and come to help you. He then spent the next 3 hours helping me. My rental didn't have any tools or a spare. He was able to talk to all of the neighbors and get all of the tools we needed to repair the vehicle. He then drove me back and forth to the tire store and helped to get my tire changed. God bless this man and his business. I also loved his employees as they were all so kind and funny!

Yelp
this cafe restaurant is set in the centre of Barga-I highly recommend the spaghetti and the creme caramel-but not the best for wines.

Yelp
Best cappuccino we've ever had! It's got a tiny outdoor balcony with fantastic views. The food was absolutely delicious and the gentleman who owns it couldn't be sweeter!
