La Maison du Frêne (Vence, French Riviera / Provence) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"A fine 18C residence with a wrought - iron staircase, superb tiled flooring and, most notably, its contemporary artwork. It has a designer pop art feel that is light - hearted and unusual. Enthusiastic collectors, the owners share their passion with guests staying in this timelessly chic setting." - Tablet Hotels

La Maison Moderne, Cap d'Antibes, southern France - Explore & Book

"The Cap may be tiny, but here is proof that small is beautiful. The dreamy pine-clad peninsular separates Antibes from Juan-Les-Pins and ticks to a slower beat than the rest of the Côte d’Azur. It was developed by European nobility in the 19th century, painted by Monet and Picasso, then colonised by film stars, who made it their summer playground. It retains a feel for its own past and occasionally you get the impression you’re walking through a Jean-Luc Goddard movie. Those looking for a taste of the old Riviera will love it. This simple 1960's modernist villa makes a great base. Set in a quiet leafy residential area, you can walk down to the boulangerie or up to the butcher; laze by the pool and top up your tan; potter off to Keller Beach Club or Le Rocher for lunch and a swim; or climb up the hill to the Cap’s totemic lighthouse for fine views east and west. Contemporary simplicity is the virtue within. Stylish rooms come in white, there are terraces galore, a decked pool shaded by palm trees and a practical kitchen with all the kit. Brilliant. Highs The Cap itself, one of the loveliest spots on the Riviera with sandy beaches and Antibes' charming old town, just a 25-minute walk from the villa This is a chic minimalist villa with a homely arty vibe, ideal for a week in the sun with lovely sea views The beautiful, airy sitting room that opens onto a dining terrace The decked pool, which shimmers at the foot of palm trees The Mediterranean gardens, planted with olive trees, yuccas, lavender and grasses Lows Bedrooms don’t have the wow factor of a fancy hotel Real estate on the Cap is vastly expensive so the garden is compact Few shops on your doorstep; head into town for the market and groceries Not ideal for the less mobile or small children (no handrail on the staircase, several steps down to the pool and no shallow end) You’ll need a car to get here, but you won’t use it much; people on the Cap tend not to stray far" - Tom Bell

La Maison du Frene, Vence, France - Explore & Book

"Matisse lived in Vence and painted it repeatedly, while Soutine drew this actual house. Fitting, then, that this utterly beguiling home is packed with original works by all the best names. Owner Thierry grew up here, moved to Paris and became hairdresser to the stars. Now he's back for the peace, and to enjoy his fabulous collection. Marvel at works by Hockney, Arman, Gilbert and George, pop-art, pastiches of Picasso and Lichtenstein, mid-century modern originals including a Charles Eames couch, and a terrific canvas above the sofa by a local Hockney-trained artist.Beauty also filters up to the four capacious and individually presented suites: Marilyn screenprints, a black bed, gold ceramics and exquisite old oils. Mickey Mouse is gilt-framed on the vibrant red walls of the terracotta-tiled staircase, a Rennie Macintosh chair waits halfway up, and a candle chandelier hangs at the top. Colour and detail is everywhere: wallpaper, chairs, cushions, vases. The beautiful exterior is the only understated part of the house, which stands opposite the contemporary art museum and gateway to Vence's charming old town. Even breakfast cannot escape the artist’s touch – elegantly served on royal Limoges crockery and eaten under white painted beams in the impressive salon. Highs The stupendous salon – a private art gallery stuffed with sculptures, paintings, busts and abstract art – is a real jaw-dropperThe large suites are works of art in themselves; each one is uniqueGreat value for money for such a very special spaceVence is a small town, not a big village; there’s lots to see, and some night life. Many prefer Vence to busy (and more famous) St Paul de Vence down the roadThierry and his partner Guy are incredibly welcoming; staying here feels like you’re visiting one of your oldest and dearest friends Lows No garden or pool, but there are gorgeous beaches a short drive away You’ll need a car to make the most of the area, but there’s no on-site car parkVence’s old town can get pretty busy in high season" - Tom Bell

Beautiful boutique property with fabulous bijou Provençal interiors. The charming hosts Guy and Thierry could not have been more helpful. We loved our five day stay, the village in the best in the area and there is a lot to do - including a short walk to Matisse’s famous Rosaire Chapelle ( best seen in the mornings). It is authentically French and we throughly enjoyed it. Unlike a previous reviewer, we are a couple in our late sixties and we did not find the parking a problem. But you must organise it before you arrive and you must co-ordinate your arrival with the hosts when in arriving in car. There is no parking in front of hotel but the hosts can make arrangements to unload/load at the front door. The parking is an easy flat 3 min walk away. Go to the Marie Antionette parking lot. It is on the GPS,safe and cheap. This is a small village and no one has private parking. Vence is a fabulous village to stay in.

We consider La Maison du Frene our home in Vence, coming back year after year, sometimes twice! No matter which season, this place is special. The hosts Thierry, Guy and Antoine take the utmost care of you with loving attention to detail. The bed is still the best we've ever slept in anywhere around the world. The immaculately furnished room and tropical rain shower cannot be surpassed. And the sumptuous morning breakfast, especially the freshly baked croissants, is the perfect way to begin the day. Best of all, Thierry, Guy and Antoine will make you feel welcome and truly at home. Don't miss this veritable art gallery and luxurious romantic B&B in one of the Cote d'Azur's most picturesque towns.

The hotel is absolutely stunning. The decor is interesting & a feast for the eyes. Our lovely suite had a living room bath bedroom with a very comfortable bed with wonderful linens. The breakfast room is amazing with very unusual lighting & decor. It has scrumptious tasty offerings to enjoy. With a few take aways available. Our hosts Antoine & Thierry were friendly and very helpful. This fabulous hotel is at the edge of old town with many restaurants & shops to visit. It was truly a magical experience. Highly recommended and so inviting can’t wait to return.

Really cozy and eccentric place, located in the very center of the Village. Room with a touch of personality, big and well equipped. Hosts are super-nice and really passionate and proud of their place. The place to sleep in Vence!

Terrible experience - charged in full for 3 days without staying a minute : We arrived at 7:30 pm with a car full of luggage after a long journey. There was no one to welcome us (we had warned them we would be 30 minutes late) ; Now on our own with a code we found upon arrival that there were barriers in place that prevented us from unloading our luggage in front of the house; We then discovered that our room was on the 4th floor - without an elevator ! We are both over 70 and although fit, it was impossible for us to carry our luggage first from the parking lot more than 10 minutes away and then up 4 flights having to go at least 5 times forth and back and up and down. We had to abort any attempt to access the property and were forced to look for alternative accommodation at 8 pm at night when prices were at a maximum. We wrote the property the next day to explain what had happened. They did not respond, they showed zero sympathy, and they charged us instead full price for no show. We would NOT recommend this place. Total absence of human understanding and good hosting.

This is our third stay here and we have already booked another. The location is ideal; the rooms are distinctive and super comfortable. The hosts are charming. We have stayed in half a dozen villages on the periphery of Nice. This one keeps drawing us back. Sure, there are some tourists. But they don't overwhelm the character of the town. It is an ideal place to savor the spirit of the region.

This is perhaps the most stylish place we have ever stayed. It was a return visit. We stayed three nights. The bed and breakfast is handily situated on the edge of the old town and close to many attractions, restaurants and bars. The owners are a delight and very welcoming.||The entrance, guest rooms and breakfast room have been decorated with enormous flair. Our suite had a designer theme with imaginative collages of Chanel, Dior, Hermes and Louis Vuitton boxes, ties, invitations and bags set against modern art, whimsical objects d’art, wonderful soft furnishings and an abundance of cushions. The effect was to induce a huge smile.||The room was exceedingly comfortable as was the bed and the bathroom boasted double sinks and a huge shower. One could not ask for more.||Breakfasts were a delight. In all, a real gem. Thank you so much.

It was a real treat to spend two weeks at La Maison du Frêne, a jewel of a hotel situated in the heart of the picturesque town of Vence, with its maze of medieval streets and numerous cafés and restaurants. Our light and airy suite was spacious, extremely comfortable and furnished with panache.||What makes this hotel so memorable, however, is the level of care and attention given to guests. Each morning as our delicious breakfast was served our hosts went out of their way to help us plan our programme for the day, enthusiastically suggesting places to visit and providing helpful maps and leaflets. They showed a genuine interest in hearing where guests had been and how they had enjoyed themselves. The patrons listened with patience and encouragement to our faltering French and were happy to to continue the conversation in English when we became tongue-tied. They ordered taxis for us and were thoughtful enough to provide us with a bottle of wine to share with visiting family, as well as a parting gift as a souvenir of our stay.||A truly original, delightful, relaxing family-run hotel. Simply a must for anyone wishing to stay in the area.
