La Maison Papillons, Near Montclus, Provence, France - Explore & Book

"Once a crumbling ruin in the picture-perfect hamlet of Monteil, this former farmhouse was painstakingly restored into a rustic-chic hideaway by artist Olivier and his design-savvy wife, Caroline. The couple spent a year living off-grid in a forest while they built walls, tended to the gardens and sourced furniture, and the result is simply breathtaking; the love that has gone into this restoration can be felt throughout. Old barn doors have been given new life as tables, windows have been added to frame the dramatic Cevennes mountains, and pieces of wrought iron have been upcycled into mirrors. Wrapped in peace, our days here were magical, spent lazing by the lavender-fringed pool and exploring this extraordinary region of France, with its ancient caves, hair-pin roads and some of the country’s prettiest villages. We can't wait to come again and sit, glass of cool wine in hand, feet submerged in the pool, gazing out across the pristine rolling landscapes of the Gard as night falls. Highs Caroline and Olivier couldn’t be warmer or more welcoming, and they’re full of local recommendations The setting is heaven, with long views over vineyards and olive groves to the Cevennes mountains Just 6 great-value bedrooms, all unique, all special A French feast for breakfast, and wonderful dinners on certain nights Perfect for couples in search of a romantic retreat, or friends seeking outdoor adventures: bikes to hire, hiking, pot-holing, rock climbing and kayaking nearby Lows It gets booked up incredibly quickly You'll need a car to explore the region Restaurants are a (short) drive away and in low season many are closed" - Emily McDonnell

We loved our stay at Maison Papillons. The location is tranquil and relaxing. The rooms beautifully furnished and the gardens/ pool area had lovely places to sit and enjoy the sunshine and nature at its best. The hosts are an amazingly helpful, knowledgeable and kind couple who have so much local knowledge of restaurants/ places to visit in the area. We felt completely welcomed and they spent so much time ensuring that we had the best possible stay. Their support was invaluable when our hire car caught fire ( yes!) and we had to arrange a replacement. A catastrophe was dealt with so smoothly thanks to their intervention and we were able to get back on track and enjoy the rest of our holiday. We would highly recommend a stay at this beautiful place. Gweneth Rushton

We had a wonderful stay at La Maison Papillons. I can't think of a single thing Caroline and Olivier could do to improve the property, the experience or their hospitality. It's perfect!

Truly a wonderful and special place. The rooms/shared spaces are beautiful, Olivier and Caroline are lovely hosts, and the setting could not be more serene and amazing. We stayed for 2 days and wish we could have stayed for a week. Oliver and Caroline provide wonderful and honest recommendations of what to do/what to skip in the area. They helped us plan both days and even reserved dinner for us. Our only regret is we didn’t get to spend more time there. We felt like we were in a fairytale. We hope to be back soon!

An amazing place to stay. The room, garden and pool were the perfect place to chill out and spend some relaxed mornings and evenings. Caroline & Olivier, the hosts, were so caring and thoughtful. They spent time to get to know us and how we wanted to spend our time and then advised on what restaurants to go to and what activities we could do (walks, beautiful villages to visit etc). The breakfast was really good and enjoying eating on the porch in the morning sun was wonderful. From 6pm they serve local, organic wine (and other things) from a little bar in the courtyard. They have a boules court which we enjoyed and there are plenty of nice spots in the garden to get some alone time to read, draw, drink or nap! What more could you possibly ask for in a countryside retreat! The area around La Maison Papillons is also amazing, with lots of vineyards, beautiful historic villages and hamlets, breathtaking walks and rivers. It is somewhere that you could stay for weeks and never run out of great places to explore. We would definitely come again! X

Max and I first visited Maison Papillons last June for our honeymoon and it’s safe to say we completely fell head over heels with it. It’s not just the breathtaking views, peaceful surroundings and delicious food that make this place so special, but Caroline and Olivier’s exceptional hospitality - we have never felt so welcomed anywhere else. They immediately put you at ease and make you feel at home. They are full of suggestions of things to do in the area whether that’s visiting picturesque towns or hiking around the gorges, or brilliant places to eat (even booking restaurants for us!). I can’t recommend Maison Papillons enough - if you’re hesitating about whether or go, just book, there’s really nowhere better. We are leaving feeling completely refreshed and with our hearts full.

The most beautiful and relaxing place to stay. A little slice of heaven. This was our second stay here and we'll be back again. Caroline et Olivier are delightful - so friendly, welcoming, lovely to chat to, and always happy to give suggestions on things to do nearby and places to visit (lots of lovely towns, villages, restaurants, and markets to explore, or walks, runs, canoeing, and cycles for more active visitors!) The rooms are really well designed, with a simple but elegant style, and the showers are great. The communal areas are also well thought out, with breakfast in the kitchen area or terrasse (depending on weather!) and a salt water pool that's a good size for either a dip or a few lengths. The food is delicious, sampling some of the best fresh local produce, and the bar has a lovely selection of drinks to try in the early evening. Finally, the chickens and the dogs are really cute and simply add to the charm!

We had the most amazing time at La Maison Papillons! The duplex looks even better 'live' than it does on the website photos, and the pool area plus the garden are wonderful. The fall colours made it even more special. Caroline and Olivier are really very kind and welcoming and gave us excellent advice on hiking trials, restaurants, cities to visit, wineries etc. Breakfast is a treat and, last but not least, we really enjoyed the animals (cat & dog) who welcomed us back from our adventures every day. This is THE place if you really want to unwind in a beautiful setting hosted by the nicest people.
