"Two blocks from La Rochelle’s historic port, on the curve of a quiet street lined with simple stone houses, a low archway leads to the Hôtel Saint-Nicolas. Its humble facade is somewhat misleading: inside, this boutique hotel is modern and minimalist, filled with natural light, and furnished with Scandinavian-style décor. The rear wall was knocked down and replaced with a vaulting wall of glass windows, creating a sunny lounge space with blonde wood floors, a sculptural wood-burning fireplace, and cozy built-in sofas with views of the leafy internal courtyard. Upstairs, rooms are compact but stylish, mostly outfitted in neutral tones and featuring only the essentials. An appealing breakfast buffet and a small bar, with sidewalk seating on the small plaza, round out Le Saint-Nicolas’ straightforward offerings." - Tablet Hotels
