La Maison Sur La Sorgue, L’Isle-sur-La-Sorgue, Provence, France - Explore & Book

"L’Isle-sur-La-Sorgue is a beautiful old mill town encircled by a network of canals. These days it's best known for its Sunday antiques market (one of the biggest in Europe), but originally it made its name making clothes for the Popes of Avignon. Plague swept through in 1628, followed by the Revolution in 1793, when the town was sacked. As a result much of the architecture dates to the early 19th century. This grand old townhouse stands bang in the thick of things. Church bells chime around the corner, the market weaves past directly outside. Inside, you find old stone walls, fine arched doorways, statues of eastern deities sitting on the stairs and a handsome first-floor sitting room. A cavernous kitchen/dining room opens onto an equally enormous courtyard, which comes with a small swimming pool. Best of all are the gigantic rooms and suites. They’re not cheap, but they deliver in spades: bold décor, free-standing tubs, super-comfy beds and oodles of romance. Highs The big courtyard has a decked pool, heated in cooler weather - an unexpected treat in townThe stylish rooms are huge, plus one has an enormous terrace which overlooks the market sqaureThe pretty old town is famous for its Sunday antiques market and is ringed by waterYou can tuck into delicious 3-course breakfastsIts shop, Retour de Voyage, sells a host of treasures from the owners' travels, including books, art and furnishings Lows The rooms are expensive for a B&B, but in a hotel you’d pay doubleTVs are available on demand only, so ask for one if you’re going to want itYou’re in the middle of the old town so expect a little noise. You may be woken early on market days (Thursday and Sunday) by sellers setting up their stallsMost restaurants close on Tuesday and Wednesday nights in low season" - Tom Bell

"L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is named somewhat literally for its unique setting; the river Sorgue flows around the outside of the town’s old fortifications. And La Maison sur la Sorgue is a similarly straightforward description of this four-room family-owned boutique hotel, whose spaces, public and private, are decorated with souvenirs from its proprietors’ global travels. Each room is unique, one with a freestanding tub, one with a terrace, one with a lovely church view. And in the courtyard, unexpectedly, is a delightful little swimming pool. There’s a daily breakfast, and restaurants abound in the neighborhood." - Tablet Hotels

This place is magical. Frederic is a delight. Yes, it is more like a B&B than a hotel chain, but that is its charm. The location is perfect. The rooms are unique, romantic and done to perfection. Breakfast in the courtyard was a treat. The artwork, from the 17th century entrance door to the courtyard to the bedrooms, is alone worth the visit. When we could not find our restaurant, Frederic walked us to it. Very special.

What an absolutely wonderful B&B. Every detail felt so thoughtfully curated — from the beautiful pieces of art throughout the property to the extremely comfortable rooms. The host was incredibly gracious and genuinely helpful, making the entire stay feel easy and welcoming. Getting there by car can be a little tricky, but the host made sure everything with our vehicle was handled without any stress. The location is also fantastic — close to great shopping, bars, restaurants, and perfect for daytime trips to nearby towns. I highly recommend staying here. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you found a hidden gem.

We had a 4 nights stay in this unique hotel. It was a special experience. Everything was different from a regular hotel. First, the owner Frederick, was so warm and caring, and helped us in every way. The place surrounds you with art, and originally decor. Breakfast is creative as well, but Frederick is very attentive to one's wishes. If you are getting there with a car, Frederick will help you with his own parking.

This was our first stop in Provence. After a long journey, delayed flight and a fraught hire car pick up, the kind and warm welcome we received from Frederic made all the stress melt away. Having guided us there, he took our car away and parked it, gave us a chilled glass of rosé and then sent us off to the restaurant he had booked for us - also lovely. The house is beautifully restored and decorated with eastern artefacts and photography. The rooms are large and comfortable. There is a courtyard garden where a beautifully presented breakfast is served, and a wooden terrace and plunge pool where we spent a relaxing afternoon. The service from everyone is extremely polite and unobtrusive. I can’t recommend it more highly.

We had an absolutely wonderful time at this unique boutique hotel. From the very beginning, Frederic greeted me on the phone with warmth and familiarity, then guided us through the back roads of the town to the front door of this remarkable jewel of a place; right in the heart of everything, yet with a unique blend of private sanctuary, artist haven, and upsc mansion, making it a blend of the ancient in the contemporary. As art collectors, who have also curated and magnificent gallery and shop, the interior is tastefully appointed with art and sculpture from all corners of the world , and then ambience extends to the peaceful back patio, complete with a small pool bordered with bamboo and meditating Buddhas. A wonderful place to unwind at the end of a hot summer day at the market. Frederic is a magnificent host, and every morning welcomed us with a full breakfast, and plenty of suggestions for how to fill our days enjoying the many offerings of the area. Do yourself a favor and book a room at this magnificent boutique hotel.

What a beautiful surprise to arrive at La Maison sur la Sorgue to enjoy the outstanding hospitality of fredrick and surround ourselves with the beauty and charm of this wonderful hotel. Having worked for the Disney organization for many years, I know the importance of attention to detail, and this lovely establishment creates it at every return. You are surrounded by beautiful, art, and antiques, the rooms are comfortable with special touches everywhere. The outdoor patio with a garden swimming pool is the perfect Zen respite after a busy day. We were also served a lovely continental breakfast with the extra touch of sugar cubes shaped like hearts! We certainly left part of our heart here, and will gladly return whenever the opportunity arises! I

I cannot say enough about this gem of a hotel and Frédéric, where we had a lovely stay in L’Isle Sur la Sorgue. We felt so taken care of the whole time! From the glasses of delicious rosé to the exquisite breakfast to a pot of chamomile tea waiting for us when we returned from a dinner in Gordes. It felt like a little guest house with a sophisticated air. Frédéric even jumped into our car when we arrived to help us navigate to the hotel, then parked our car for us too! The location is perfect! We walked out our door directly into the Sunday market, and everything else is walking distance including the famous antique fair. You’re so close to everything that you might have to close the windows at night due to revealers at the wine bar down the street, but the sound is immediately blocked and I assure you you will have an excellent sleep here. The decor is beautiful and interesting, collected by the owners in large part from their travels in Asia. There are also lots of beautiful items you can purchase in their shop and have shipped home to you. If you’re looking for something unique I would recommend La Maison very highly. You will be so well taken care of!

For our Christmas holidays this year, we took a trip to France and stayed in a variety of hotels, 7 in total. As we moved from hotel to hotel, there were certain things we focused on the most so I decided to rate them at each hotel. For Maison sur la Sorgue:||Bathroom (weather had a shower) – our room only had a bathtub with a spout that flew everywhere. It was a huge mess to bathe.|Lobby – The hotel (really more like a bed and breakfast) is housed in an old villa so the building is beautiful.|Location in the city or town – Great location right in the heart of town, driving there is not for the faint of heart though because the streets are so narrow n the area where the hotel is located.|Size of room – Decent|Breakfast – Good|Elevator (was there one?) – No|Ambiance - We loved the old villa feel but the hotel is truly more like an American bed and breakfast concept. There are 5 rooms, and I only ever saw Frederick, the owner, working as well as one housekeeper. Frederick was so nice, but there are weird rules like no food in the rooms (I have never stayed at any hotel that does not allow food in the rooms. Ever.) No mini-fridges etc. It is not your usually hotel experience.|Lighting- there was hardly any lighting at all. Night in the room was very difficult.||This town was one of my favorite stops and we just loved it. But after 6 more hotels, this one definitely did not live up to the rest of the places we stayed.|
