Yelp
No, nope, not at all. I had been wanting to try this place since I learned it existed last year, so I had high expectations. It was exciting to see people with what looked like appetizing plates of 5 small soft tacos and chips with guac.
The main menu board is useless -- names of the tacos with no list of ingredients. So grab the take out menu as fast as you can. Chicken taco's with bacon? What? Quesadillas with half potatoes? No. Whatever this place wants to be, it's not Mexican. I got the Pirata and Alambra large tacos. The Pirata is steak with guac and the guac didn't really show up for the party, leaving me basically with a tortilla of steak. The steak was okay -- could have been really tasty with the proper amount of guac between the lines. The Alambra was a disgrace -- I love the taste of bacon too, but it doesn't belong in this soft taco. This is in no way the taste of Mexico, nor the right combination with chicken (again, guac is the way forward).
But let's break it down to the basics. The tortillas are not well made. It should be soft and delicious on its own. A good tortilla sells itself. These were.... well just think stale and not memorable. The guac, which I am judging from the chips, was not up to par. Very basic, which can be okay with a good avocado but it wasn't even properly ground. The fresh salsa (mild) was quite good though, and if you mix that and the onions in with the guac then you end up with something respectable. I recommend that.
Chips were not great, but okay. At least they didn't serve the "nacho" chips that every bar serves up, but they were going towards the stale side and come on, bake your own fresh, hot chips! You're a Mexican joint! Much as some judge a restaurant on the bread and butter, I think it's a fair point to judge a Mexican place on their chips and salsa. And they should be HOT. This *definitely* is not authentic Mexican food beyond the fact they they are serving you on small tortillas. Nor is it Tex-Mex, nor is it American Mexican. It's very much Stockholm Mexican and it has very far to go.
I've never missed home so much as when I ate here. I'm being harsh on this place -- I would return. It seems like the best that Stockholm has to offer in this arena. But it's so, so far from the experience that Stockholmers should have when they sit down with a tortilla, and some hot chips and salsa and definitely a margarita. I wish that I could share this experience with you. For now, I'll just close my eyes and remember times from far away.
