La Pensione Hotel

Location is awesome, right in downtown Little Italy! Awoke this morning to the street in front of the hotel being closed for a farmers market (6 to 8 blocks long). Great food, vendors, and people watching! Lots of diversity!

Good position but apart from that the hotel is quite bad. Rooms are small and old, so small you barely can store your luggage anywhere. Mattresses are old, and overall the room was fairly dirty. It has a parking option below the hotel for 50 dollars per night, which is quite high considering also parking spots were very tight. Only good thing is that it's located in Little Italy, which is a nice are of San Diego.

I stayed at La Pensione for two nights during a work trip in San Diego. Overall it was a fine stay, here is the good and the bad: The Good: The staff - as others have mentioned all the staff who work here are incredibly kind and attentive, The location - right in the heart of Little Italy, but the rooms are super quiet so it doesn't feel like you are in the center of a tourist hub at night, Bathroom - nice updated shower with shampoo, etc. The Bad: The hotel feels pretty tired and like it could use a refresh. There were a lot of scuff marks on the walls of my room and the room could have been a bit cleaner (dust on the furniture, more thorough vacuum, etc.). The fitness center exists but is teeny tiny, definitely couldn't have more than one person in there at a time.

Joe Burson-Ryan and the entire staff went above and beyond to make my stay here FABULOUS!! Location. Location. Location. Easily walkable to so many wonderful sights and restaurants, too! I highly recommend La Pensione when traveling to San Diego! I will definitely stay here again on my next visit. 👍🏻👍🏻

Size of room was absolutely the smallest I’ve ever stayed in, there was no room to walk through. Aside from size of room the AC was either too cold or walking in to a HOT room with a bad smell. We topically travel with vehicle, but decided to fly this time, therefore, we didn’t get a rental car. Reason why we stayed closer to all restaurants and attractions. I did book this travel through Booking.com As we were out enjoying San Diego and beautiful views, our outings would be late. Which by the way staff during early hours not the friendliest. I feel night shift staff was always pleasant. I was about to get ready for the day, as I noticed a bug size of palm of hand…it was a cockroach, then I see another. I contacted front desk right away, and they said since I booked through a third party, they would be the ones who would have to issue a discount or refund. It’s been over a week and still waiting on any update w/refund. I contacted Booking.com and they said they’re still waiting on property. I tried calling the property and staff answering was very sassy and dismissive about my situation. I know I will never stay at this hotel. The location was probably the best thing about our stay.

I visited San Diego in the month of September. Location of this Hotel is great. This Hotel is located in Little Italy, which has a numerous amount of places to eat & drink in the area. Rooms are very clean with a chic decor. My biggest problem about our stay was that they have full control of the cooling temperatures. They are off during the day and when we got in after our daily adventures we would come into a hot room. Turning the temperatures lower on our part was no help. FIRST night there, we called several times to complain about the temperatures, but to no avail. Second night was even worse. This Hotel controls the temperatures from within to keep costs down on electricity, I assume. The 2 nights we stayed were very uncomfortable sleeping at night. I do not recommend staying at this hotel, for the price I can stay elsewhere and sleep more comfortably with adequate A/C running at night. Guessing this issue would probably be same in winter with heating as well. I would definitely not be staying here again in the future.

I'll give a short version and a long. Short - fantastic location in the center of Little Italy. The rooms are small but comfortable. Little to no parking. Excellent service. Long - we stayed in a Queen View on the third floor. The room was about the size of a typical hotel room - I know there are smaller rooms in the building. The location was top notch, you are right in the middle of Little Italy, right next to the main plaza. The farmers market happens twice a week right outside on Date Street - Wed and Sat. You are surrounded by restaurants on all sides. There is a 7-11 about 2 blocks away. The MTS trolley station is also a few blocks away for the green line. The Old Town Trolley stop is one block over. The maritime museum and USS Midway is within walking distance, maybe a mile. The airport is 10 minutes away. We didn't have a car, we used Uber, which was super easy. Parking seems to be almost non-existent, so keep that in mind. The room was clean. I see other reviews mentioning the AC, but we had no issues. The bathroom in the Queen View was a normal size and it had a sink inside the bathroom. You can ask for water at the desk. You can get coffee in the conference room where there is also a microwave. Cafe next door has great coffee and breakfast items.

Rooms are small and cramped, odd shaped. Older building, so things may be clean but look dirty and worn due to age. Very low lighting. Lots of pipe and building noises inside room. Location is right in the heart of little Italy.

This is a cute Hotel located literally in the heart of Little Italy . You would walked out to all the restaurants everything is walking distance if u stay here . Gaslamp is I believe a few minutes driving from here . I really enjoyed Little Italy more than Gaslamp so this hotel was perfect for us . They offer a garage parking limited spaces with a fee . The fee was cheaper than Gaslamp Hotels . I believe $35 a night . Our room was clean and very cute the only thing missing was a coffee maker but ,you are walking distance to a coffee shop downstairs. Our room came with a surprise . We had a balcony the only room with a balcony facing Little Italy we loved it . We would definitely stay here again the location was perfect .

This hotel is in a great location in the middle of Little Italy and maybe a 15-minute walk to the Midway. Our room was clean and spacious. While it doesn't have the view that Manchester Grand Hyatt does, we didn't book the hotel for the view. I would happily stay here again, especially if I wanted to eat in Little Italy. The hotel is a 10 to 15 minute walk from the train station.

While the hotel may seem perfect due to its location it is not for someone with disabilities. This location is NOT ideal for you if you're in a wheelchair or unable to walk. There is an elevator but it doesn't help much if your room is not closets to the elevator. The rooms do not have any assistive devices and there are No handles on the walls or in the showers to assist handicapped people. Not impressed by this experience!

Cute boutique-y hotel centrally located in the heart of Little Italy. We were in town for just two nights and likely wouldn't be spending too much time in our room. Just needed a cozy place that was clean with a nice bed and that's what we got. The rooms are pretty small, but we did get the smallest of the offering. Upon entering, the sink/vanity area was to the right, bathroom was to the left and then the bed and desk straight ahead. Our room was made for a single or a couple, def cannot try to squeeze even a child in. It's super tight, but again, we just needed a place to sleep. Beds are clean and comfy. AC unit and electrical to one of the light fixtures was loud, but it didn't bother us. We got a pretty sweet deal, and the hotel is walking distance to just about every restaurant and bar. We did not park so I can't comment on the costs, but I do know they offer parking at a fee. They offer a fridge as well, but don't remember if I saw a safe. Property offers a small gym but it works. NO weights of any kind, just medicine balls, and three cardio machines (elliptical, peloton-ish bike and a rowing machine). Free water at the front desk or in the gym. Staff was very friendly, particularly Joe, who was there most morning to the late afternoon. We didn't engage much with the night staff as we were mostly just heading up to our room. Overall, I'd say it was a good stay and a budget friendly establishment. I would stay there again.

Don't stay here unless you don't have a car. Apparently, they have limited garage parking and once it's full, you have to find parking elsewhere. I was staying here for a company event nearby and was late to my event. I also had to take an Uber to my event instead of driving since I parked several blocks away. I then had to leave super early the next morning for another company event and was late to that as well since I wasn't informed the parking garage doesn't open until 6am. Overall, the experience was terrible. The front desk staff was trying to be helpful and let me drop my bags off before I went on my journey to find parking but I won't ever stay here again. The whole experience was super inconvenient.

Great location in a middle of little Italy. Tiniest room size, too small for two people. Room was facing another building. They didn't offer every day cleaning service. No coffee maker or iron No extra lock for security on the door

If you are familiar with the term pensione you will do well at this hotel. pensiones are normally no frills simple locations. This hotel lives up to that. Clean easy to get to and a great central location.

Located within the heart of Little Italy, this hotel is surrounded by plenty of food options, and is walkable to many attractions. I was in town to see Sting & Billy Joel at Petco Park. If you like walking as much as I do, the park is an easy 30 minute walk. I traveled by Amtrak from Burbank and used ride shares to see Balboa Park. Little Italy is a very lovely area and a good home base for exploring San Diego.

IMPORTANT; Parking is $30 a night. FIRST COME FIRST SERVE! The garage will not fit a full size SUV nor a Van. **Plan to come early, get a parking spot and plan to wait till about 1-3pm to check in.... I would suggest walking around the dock; visit the maritime museum, the Mee Shim art gallery or head to the park and of course enjoy lunch at one of the many delicious restaurants in the area I love planning most of my trips to the T, knowing that Little Italy, San Diego can be really busy I knew parking would be an issue. I had 3 hotels in mind; great location, good reviews and all boutique hotels. I went with La Pensione because the day I called I was told that there was parking for $30 a night across the street. Not told about first come first serve. We arrive at 5pm on a Saturday evening expecting a parking spot which was immediately denied. I explained to the young lady who checked us in that I was not told this and I expected a parking spot. She said Well it's on our website. I can't remember the last time I've booked directly through a website. I also mentioned if this was the case, I would've gladly paid another hotel $50 a night for valet with in and out privileges. Did she care?? Just gave us a map of other parking spots. Rm 312 - The rainfall shower has not been cleaned in a while; I mean the lime stone has caked up the shower so bad not all the nozzles weren't working nor even pointing straight. Also, the bathroom sink was clogged. There are some pros to most of the cons about this hotel, the A/C worked well and wasn't loud, the next day Brandon the Hotel desk clerk was kind enough to give us a parking pass early in the A.m and answered all my questions. The location is great...

This was my second stay and it was even better the second time around because of our room. Shout out to Brandon at the front desk! My best friend and I wanted to have a Little Italy day. Since staying here once before a few years ago and having a great experience we booked it for our celebration. The staff is so nice! The room was spacious, clean and the patio from our room what the icing on the cake! I will definitely be back. Thank you La Pensione!

WOW! Will def be back here. Love the location, it is right in the heart of LIttle Italy. We found a great parking spot here which is nice, especially because on weekends, it gets kinda crazy busy. The staff could be a little more friendly. The room is small but very modern and clean, which i like. I hate dirty carpet, and theirs is well maintained. We woke up the next day (Sunday), checked out...walked down the steps, and there's the farmer's market just right in front of us, all the way down the street. It was so cool. The farmers market BTW, in Little Italy, i by far, the best i've been in. Will def be back here

Great location. It's right in the center of little Italy. I thought it would be too loud based on other reviews, but I guess it depends on your room, we didn't hear any outside noise. I I didn't get any pictures of the room, but the room was cute. Very small but perfect for just my boyfriend and I. The room is out dates but the bathrooms seems so have been updated. They offer garage parking for $35 a day, the parking is a very tight fit. I don't suggest big trucks or SUVs. Overall would recommend this hotel

DON'T stay at this hotel if .. If you need a bathroom with a sink inside the bathroom don't stay here. The sink is in the middle of the bedroom for their "standard room" If you have more than one person in your party. Don't book a standard room. There is not enough room for two people. These rooms are so small and have zero space to lay out your suitcase or anything else for that matter. If you need a floor length mirror to get ready don't stay at this hotel. We upgraded to a better room and still the only mirror was the half mirror in the bathroom. If you need and iron and an ironing board which are standard amenities in a hotel don't stay here. When you call down to the front desk you will be told to come get it yourself from the front desk staff. Don't stay at this hotel if you plan to sleep in on a Saturday morning. The traffic control will be out ther blowing their whistle every minute beginning at 7 am. If you like an air-conditioned room don't stay at this hotel. Their rooms are so hot and the air conditioning unit is controlled by the front desk. If you like friendly and helpful staff DON'T stay at this hotel. They are rude, and lack the basic skills of customer service, and will make excuses to what they can't or are not willing to do because it is corporate policy. I have NEVER FELT SO MISLEAD BY PHOTOS on a website and so disappointed in a hotel stay then I was with this one. After being forced to stay here one night we immediately checked out and booked another hotel to enjoy the rest of our stay. Very disappointed!

Told there was no parking. Then told parking is first come-first served. Room was HORRIBLE. Portable a/c with tubing emptying into a garbage can. This set-up filled with water and I had to empty it twice to avoid it over-filling and drenching the rug. Pubic hair in the sheets upon check-in. Blue pill on the carpet left by previous guest ? Paper thin walls. Heard people having sex clear as a bell. Overall, this place is gross, rooms are tiny and janky. Not worth it. Giving one star because there is no zero star rating option.

Located at the heart of Little Italy. The people there were cool including the workers & those who were staying there. Parking sucked though! That parking garage was so small. Everything was walking distance & my trip was less than 2 days. I got lucky with parking & just stayed parked there for the time being. Anywhere I needed to go, I walked or took a Lyft. My room was very nice though. It was small, but perfect for my trip.

A last minute delayed flight meant I was "stranded" in San Diego overnight. I wasn't too bummed since this is paradise. Found a great rate and this hotel was close to the airport. Great location and it looks very nice. From the outside it's very beautiful. Even walking in the front lobby is just as nice. Then I met the young lady working the front counter and the hotel immediately lost 1 . She seemed grumpy, very short with her responses and definitely lacked any prior skills. Luckily the rest of the hotel made up for it. I stayed in the top floor and the room was very nice. Keep in mind it's small but don't let that keep you away. Very clean and nicely furnished. The bathroom is extremely nice as well. The shower is small but still very nice and loved the overhead shower head was a great touch. I'll be back here for sure!

La Pensione review Hubby booked this hotel for my birthday weekend, Brandon was extremely helpful and patient when I called him a few times to ask him about the parking situation. The other FrontDesk agents were friendly and helpful too. The hotel is a cozy boutique hotel, located in Little Italy, surrounded by the wonderful smells of Italian cuisine. The lobby has a fireplace and a few seats. The room was small, clean and had the necessities needed for an overnight stay. There was a fridge and TV. We loved the rain shower. We had the option to store our suitcases with them, while finding parking. Honestly, once you're checked in, you don't need your car, everything is in walking distance. They have a Saturday Farmer's Market directly in front of their door, all the way down the street. Totally loved this. The morning coffee was available at the little coffee shop, next to the lobby. If you have a truck or SUV, you won't be able to park in this hotel's garage, it only accommodates compact vehicles, and costs $30 per night. Alternatively, there are lots of other parking places around ranging from $16 and up, if you don't mind walking to the hotel. There is also meter-parking around the hotel. Also Gaslamp District was rocking on Friday night, and only a 20 minute walk from hotel, if you don't mind getting your steps in. There are Uber's and these little lit-up motorized or non-motorized carts available from the GasLamp. I did like this little gem and will be back. Thank you Brandon for all the suggestions.

Pros: Nice style, comfy beds Cons: You can't control your own thermostat in the room ( you have to call the front desk to turn on the fan) It's bright room even with both shades drawn. Showers: you can either have water pressure or hot water but not both at the same time.

Stayed here over the weekend To drink and eat in little Italy all weekend long ! Enjoyed the balcony views scoring the corner room at the spot it was popping all night long could enjoy the live music from the busy street below the aroma of Italian food swept across our noses tempting us to eat more , I would recommend this hotel right in the heart of Little Italy , only down side for me was the STUPID Ac unit facing the wall in the corner , and the grumpy host at the front long hair blue eyes and grumpy. Parking kinda iffy we stayed in a PGarage few blocks down not a bad walk at all $45 for the weekend tho yikes. Anyways see you guys nxt time

Had a positive experience here booking on hotwire last minute for a music fest at the Embarcadero. 5 stars for the location - right at the center of Little Italy near all the restaurants and bars. Price was fairly cheap but its cheap because its old school. Not sure what people expect. Room was outdated. Bedframe and drawers look liked they were from a 80s Miami room. Carpet was old. There was a small tv and we got to watch some world cup. But most important to me was bed was clean and stuff is secure. No view. The bathroom did seem like the only part renovated. Sink was outside of the bathroom. The walls were quite thin. I read people had an issue with the single elevator. I didnt bother parking onsite. Parked a couple blocks up after a drive around found free street parking near a school. I thought staff was very friendly and fast.

Termites coming out of a wall vent, all over the bed, in my wives purse. Changed rooms. Banging for two hours above us in the middle of the night. Found another termite in her purse.

The pros! Great location! We tried a few of the local places walking distance and also woke up to the farmers market in the morning which was really cool! We used their parking which yes it is an extra cost of $30 a night but I felt it was worth it because we had plans to visit a few places so it was nice to not have to come back and have to search for parking. Which parking can be a headache and we were here visiting during the week days. The hotel itself was clean and everything was functional. The front desk was friendly and helpful! The cons. The walls are very thin you can hear all your neighbors from sides and above either shower, us the restroom and snore at night! Also it is surrounded by businesses so you will hear the busy people either cleaning or just talking outside your windows in the morning. The parking garage is very small and yes definitely have to squeeze around to for but nothing major.

I was booking a 3 night stay in San Diego for a graduation ceremony that was taking place at Petco Park, so I logged onto Expedia to take a peek at hotels between the ball park and San Diego International Airport. This hotel was by far the best deal at the time ($123/night) that also seemed to be the nicest. The biggest perk was its location. It is in the heart of Little Italy with a ton of fantastic restaurants close by. It was really hopping on the weekend! Upon arrival, we asked to check our bags, since check-in wasn't until 3pm, and they let us check in early without charging us extra! So kind! While this hotel doesn't offer a free breakfast, they DO give guests vouchers for free coffee and pastries at Caffe Italia, which is a small eatery with indoor and outdoor seating, adjacent to the lobby. The coffee and pastries were excellent, and the staff there were so kind! Hotel staff were friendly and went the extra mile. The rooms were adorable, decorated so cute! My only disappointment about the room itself would be that it was a little on the small side, and didn't have a full length mirror. The other bummer was that while the hotel advertised free WiFi, it was nonexistent. I could connect to it for a brief second upon arrival, but it didn't work in our rooms at all. We kept losing connection and I heard someone else expressing the same issue in the lobby. I ended up blowing through my cellular data and having to buy more. I can't fault the hotel for this, because maybe there was a router issue? I can't speak as to whether or not this is the norm for them. That being said, this was a fantastic stay! I would stay here again in a heartbeat! This place was kept so clean! I saw staff cleaning the hallway wall trim while I was there. The shower in our bathroom was a beautifully tiled walk in shower with excellent water pressure. The windows of this hotel opened up too! I find it rare for a hotel to have opening windows. It was nice to be able to get fresh air in the room. The location of this hotel is insane. So many incredible eateries were on the surrounding block and it was fantastic to be able to have some drinks at dinner and easily walk back to the room. This place is in the middle of all the action - location is ideal! If you're staying here, I recommend dinner at Allegro, drinks at Graze by Sam, and ice cream from Salt & Straw.

Such a mixed bag! Let me start with the location! In the heart of Little Italy. Steps from amazing restaurants and nightlife. You cannot beat the location! The parking- Holy ****! A tiny underground garage with 24 spaces for over 60 rooms. Carpool, come early and drive the most compact car possible. We were lucky to get a spot. But don't know how we are going to get back inside of it the spot is so snug. Bonus- we have a balcony that overlooks bustling India st. It's really cool and lively down here. The decor- nice! It's modern and cute. I feel like it is clean. I'm a neat freak too. I feel comfortable. The beds- comfy and soft!

after much deliberation between my husband and I the highlight of our staycation we're from Riverside) was this hotel I mean The View, the location, the staff, everything. Upon arrival I realized that the hotel was in the heart of Little Italy so I loved it right away. Once we checked in and got to our room and saw the view we had we freaked out. We just made a regular reservation online nothing exciting. We have made reservations at hotels before and called to make sure we have a nice view but this one just came with it. It was beautiful we will be making more trips to San Diego just to stay at this hotel

The staff went above & beyond for us. Also, our room was very nicely appointed & even though it is right on the main strip /restaurant row but we could barely hear the noise. walking distance to everything. We had to park offsite (see their website for detail). it has a wonderful "nest" lounge for morning coffee too.

Place looked a lot nicer in the photos, room was smaller than expected but that wasn't even the issue. It was dirty af, finger nails on the floor, spiderwebs in the room, the floor was nasty to walk on with out sandals and the light fixtures were dusty. Very displeased. Wouldn't recommend this place.

Fantastic location in Little Italy where there's a ton of bars, restos, cafes and steps to the Harbor, trolley, Saturday farmers market and Gaslamp. Free street parking is hard to find . They charge $20 for overnight parking in the basement where it's very full on weekends. The area is very uber-friendly. The room we had (411) was very small. No dresser and no storage for luggage. There is no safe. There is a mini-fridge ($3 for smartwater); Windows can be opened and window shades does have a black-out option. Pets not allowed but they have a 40 lb labradoodle named Penny walking Around the lobby unleashed. WiFi is included as well as a voucher for a small coffee and pastry that can be picked up in the connecting cafe each morning. Overall an enjoyable experience until right before we checked out when the cleaning lady opened our door using her own key WITHOUT knocking. It was noon and she must have assumed we checked out but either way, late check-out or not, you don't just barge in unannounced. Reported this to Brandon in the front desk and he was apologetic however I hope They emphasize hospitality rule # 1: knock KNOCK

La Pensione Hotel offers European boutique accommodations in a thriving Italian Village, they are in fact under construction across the way for La Piazza, which will make the Village even more exclusive and busy, keep in mind people La Pensione isn't responsible for the noise, don't be ignorant and if you don't like the noise I suggest you stay at La Valencia in La Jolla where you will only hear the ocean, dahhhhhhling, that's where I fancy when I want my serenity. Parking is limited for hotel, but we always seem to find parking the few times we had to unfortunately drive, but that's how parking circumstances are honey, first come first serve. La Pensione Hotel cannot guarantee parking if everyone has a car. Beds & rooms are wonderful, we have been given extra pillows, toiletries and they have accommodated us for any special request. We have never been unhappy with our room accommodations. The staff is friendly, helpful(Javier & Brandon) Caffe Italia is a separate entity adjacent to the hotel that offers bold, strong Latte's and the most scrumptious morning breakfast bites, I've never ever experienced a bad outcome. The person who received grey"green" eggs maybe they thought she might of resembled the Grinch;) .... don't worry be happy. La Pensione Hotel is my home away from home, they are thee European Boutique experience for the charming & thriving Little Italy Village, don't let anyone tell you any different. Ciao

Parking is an additional $35 dollars and I unfortunately lost my parking garage card and they charged me an additional $50. Parking structure is also EXTREMELY tiny! Like good luck moving your car here.

Had no hot water for our stay. They offered nothing in return after our numerous calls. As we walked out the receptionist didn't say a word to us. La penitentiary hotel.

Location location location was perfect. Right in the middle of downtown San Diego in the little Italy neighborhood. Lots of great restaurants and bars nearby. Our room appeared to be very clean but really really small. The air conditioner didn't seem to work well to the point we opened the windows to cool our room off. The price of the room was pretty reasonable but $30 a night for parking was a little extreme. The hotel has a parking garage but spaces like their rooms were tiny. Many cars were parked over the line. Overall we liked it but will probably stay somewhere else next time that's a little bigger

Me and my kid stayed here for a quick getaway, 1 night 2 days, the pics on Expedia look great! So this is prime location if you want to be in the heart of little Italy, they have limited parking underground, charge 30$ a day, check in process was super easy and quick, our room was tiny! But decent, everything was cleaned, towels still soft, quiet and great view. I am giving 2 stars only because it was very small, and the parking was just insanely difficult, I have a small to mid size car and I don't know how I managed to park. Space is very limited and your basically touching other cars. I expected a bit more... would I stay again? No, but everyone was nice, clean hotel, definitely more for adults, granted my kid is 13. I prefer spacious comfortable rooms with some amenities hence my review. But location was amazing.

This is a neat hotel. It's right in the heart of Little Italy. They have parking underground. Good luck parking on the street as they often have farmers markets going on. The room was clean and even though it was small it was comfortable. We had a great view of the bay as well. The elevator is a little slow but but not too bad. There is a coffee shop on the 1st floor. We didn't have a chance to try it because the line was really long the next morning and there was a farmers market happening in front of the hotel! So I want to think it was good! I will be back for sure.

I have always wanted to stay at La Pensione but rooms for more than one night were never available. My daughter had a very early spring break so a lot of San Diego hotels had availability. I didn't plan on spending a lot of money so LPH was the perfect solution. I was able to get a family room for a little under $450 for two nights including parking, daily coffee and pastry, and a $20 uber code that didn't work. LPH has no pool, no valet, no room service, no luggage service, no coffee/tea service or free bottled water in the rooms. The parking is only $20 a night but it's very limited to only 20+ spots for 60+ rooms. I would never stay here on a weekend but on the Sunday and Monday nights I stayed only a few spots were taken and the underground parking has very tight spots. LPH is located on Date Street in the heart of Little Italy, next to the famous "Little Italy" sign, attached to Cafe Italia and Napizza, walking distance to the trolley, Gaslamp, San Diego Bay, Extraordinary Desserts, Waterfront Park, Jean-Phillipe's I-Dessert and tons of restaurant that are hard to find parking for. My family had a wonderful time as we weren't planning on staying in our rooms a whole lot. I didn't expect nice toiletries but they were organic and the bar soap had a nice almond scent. The room had comfortable and modern beds and nice lighting and a balcony overlooking the main strip.

Our room was dirty with random splatters on the walls, the lights made strange noises when on, the sink backed up and handle on toilet was broken. We requested assistance with the toilet and sink the evening we arrived, the following morning and again the following late afternoon. That night it had still not been addressed so they had us pack up our belongings and move to another room equally as dirty with even stranger noises, however, a functioning sink and toilet.

What a cute boutique hotel. The lobby is small and quaint. I like the grey and white colors all around. We had a corner room (312). We got to the hotel after a wedding around 11pm and we heard two couples on the opposite side of the hallway getting it on. Our room was pretty small but I didn't mind since it was just the two of us and we were only there for one night. The shower stall was small and leaked water all over the floor. Their shampoo and other products kinda sucked. The room itself was clean and nicely decorated. There was a small flat screen tv, dangling lightbulbs, blinds that kept the room dark in the morning. The bed was comfy. I was rudely awakened before 6am by some loud ass preaching. I had no idea what the hell was going on but it sounded like a preacher on a megaphone blasting his speech for over 10-20 minutes. It was pretty crazy. Thank god i was able to fall back asleep afterwards. Other than that rude awakening, I had a pleasant stay at this hotel. It is located right by the Little Italy sign. You can walk to the harbor and around little Italy which has soooooo many cute restaurants and dessert spots. Or you can do what I did and rent a scooter to speed around town. There is a little courtyard where you can enjoy your breakfast. I highly recommend this place. $150 a night is very reasonable! Plus you get coupons for a complimentary coffee/tea and pastry from cafe Italia downstairs!

A nice place to stay. Small but cozy enough. Clean and helpful staff. Parking issues are expected in Little Italy but we found parking directly out front both days we stayed here. It's a lively atmosphere around the hotel with plenty to do. Not for quiet lovers, although the noise did not prevent any sleep or unpleasantness for us. We did not try the coffee breakfast. The staff was very attentive. We probably would go elsewhere in the future but ONLY because we are older and the hustle of Little Italy was a bit much. The market on Saturdays is amazing. Right outside the hotel.

Roaches. I loved the location, but the room had roaches. It was also not very clean, there was dirt on the floor and on the rug, looked like crumbs from prior guests. Bathroom had roaches - big ones. We were on the 4th floor but could hear all the street noise from below. The room was hot because the AC is locked and you can't really control it. The parking lot is hard to maneuver, it's so tight in there. The hotel is central to all the restaurants, bars, shops, etc. If you are going to the Mexican Consulate, it's a 3-minute walk and easy to get to. The Italian coffee shop below is great. But I wouldn't stay here again. For the price, you can stay somewhere cleaner, cooler, and without bugs.

We've stayed at La Pensione Hotel twice. Once when they were remodeling and once for a week after. It is in the heart of San Diego's Little Italy. The hotel has a modern European feel, the furnishings nice and it was, most importantly, clean. There is a parking area that is first-come, first served under the hotel that is gated for protection. We never took out our car because there is plenty to see, do and eat within walking distance (and it assured us to keep our parking space). Lyft/Uber is reasonable to the coast of downtown if you need a change of scenery. We did not use any of the amenities when we stayed. They do have a fitness center and spa but I cannot attest to those. They have a nice private courtyard which leads out to the street. You can sip your morning coffee in the cool quiet area. The staff were really nice and recommended places to eat. Evening in Little Italy is exciting and full of activity. It was nice to sit outside, have a pastry and sip coffee while watching all the people going by. I'm not excited by their green-certified pizzeria, Napizza. It's not something I would be interested in eating when there are so many other options just steps away. I would definitely go back to stay and recommend La Pensione for anyone wanting to stay in the San Diego area.

Can you give it negative stars? We have been going to this hotel for years when we travel to San Diego. This was a special time, as we commemorated the second anniversary of my father's death. We had two rooms - my 85-year-old mother with one of my sisters, and I was in a room with my other sister. We were perfectly greeted by Brandon, who has been there for years. We went to our rooms with my mother and sister on the 4th floor. The room had a notepad with a room number on it written in ink, so the room was new. During the evening, the compressor (we think that's what it was) went off ALL night. That same night in my room, my sister found that she was allergic to the down comforter. We called down to the front desk and the rude girl told us that she didn't know where the non-down linens were (Should WE look around to find them?!) After an hour or so, someone brought up the linens but didn't take the ones we didn't need, so we just threw them in a corner. I found out that they are under new ownership and that the evening front desk people get complained about all the time. They also no longer have a deal with the coffee shop next door AND they do not have coffee makers in the room. Too bad. We loved this place for years, but I'm not going back.

The location is very convenient. The rooms are tiny but it's ok if your just using it to sleep. The ac doesn't work well at all and the bed is tiny but ok if it's just 2 people we had our toddler with us so that was uncomfortable.

In the heart of Little Italy, you will always eat well when you stay here. The rooms are small, but functional and efficient. You came to San Diego to enjoy the city, and the rooms are just the right size to decompress, relax with some Animal Planet (which I did Not channel surf away from in my two weeks) and get some sleep with the wonderful ocean breeze wafting through the open window. In the mornings, get a ticket for a coffee (or hot tea!) and small pastry at the built-in Caffe Itallia. For a few bucks more, you can have a bagel or a breakfast panini, and you'll be fueled and fed for your busy morning! If you have business downtown or at the convention center, La Pensione is located two short blocks from the SD MTS Green Line Trolley station. A day pass is $5, 4-day for $15, or two weeks for $43, plus a $2 fee for the rechargeable touch-card. I'm from Austin where I ride the bus to work every day, and I can't believe how an old technology like trains and rail trolleys feel so comfortable, fast, and predictably on time. The staff at La Pensione are so welcoming and happy to help. When my travel partner (a recreational hiker) hurt her foot on the walk up Kettner, the front desk provided first aide to get her through the night so she could bandage it properly later. Louie, the hotel's dog, is maybe a tad grumpy when he's behind the counter, but he's a real sweetheart when the manager is there walking him around the public areas or around the building. If/when you discover the ice cream (Salt & Straw) shop across the street, it might be hard to avoid dessert every night! Saturday mornings, the farmer's market is right out the front steps! Get ready for great pop-up lunch, fresh fruit, bread, and honey. Handmade gifts and jewelry also abound. My wife booked this hotel for me for a work conference, and when she arrived at the end of the week, I told her how perfect her choice was. For two weeks I literally called this hotel "home" whenever we were tired or ready for a nap. This is exactly where I will stay if/when we return to San Diego!

Truly the cutest and quaint boutique hotel in Little Italy! This place is in the heart of it everything. The rooms are a bit small but you won't be spending too much time inside with where you are at. Originally we got a room here thinking we would bring our son. We wanted to have a fun day/night in little Italy and not have to worry about driving. This place was absolutely perfect!

I really did like this place, EXCEPT.....I'm short, 5'2", and these stupid, Vessel(?) sinks?? This is the dumbest trend ever! If you stay here,bring a makeup mirror! It's dark, and you will need a step stool to wash your face, if you are under 5'5". The bed was super comfy, and the location is amazing! To the staff: You were wonderful! I will be back, even with your crappy sink!

I should have read the reviews. We were so excited to be in the heart of Little Italy. Should have known it was too good to be true. Lack of customer service?! NO CUSTOMER SERVICE. No one even maning the desk to offer customer assistance. The HVAC never stopped making noise. Everytime anyone used water you could hear it running through the walls. The motion sensored bathroom light switch was faulty. And the one thing we hate to top of the horrible experience, Rain shower head. We pre-payed for a Queen Bed and got a Full sized mattress, that they wanted us to believe was a QUEEN. Our feet were hanging off the bottom and we couldn't roll over at all. Limited parking in the tiny, tight 6 stall underground lot was $30. Just don't stay here. Stay anywhere else, but here. Do yourself a favor and don't do it to yourself. You deserve better for your money.
