7 Restaurants and Bars That Celebrate American Presidents

"In April 1998, Chile hosted the second-ever Summit of the Americas. Presidents and prime ministers from throughout the Western hemisphere gathered to meet with their fellow leaders in Chile’s capital city of Santiago. After one summit session held at Santiago’s Municipal Theater, the assembled leaders began climbing into their limousines to return to their hotels. However, American President Bill Clinton deviated from his schedule and surprised his aides by heading to a nearby restaurant instead. The San Remo was a type of basic restaurant known in Chile as a picada (or picá), a simple place serving inexpensive dishes such as sandwiches and french fries. It had been a slow day for the restaurant, as the security barriers for the summit kept many of its regular customers away. That changed in an instant when server María Ximena Provoste noticed the approach of Clinton, surrounded by a pack of reporters. She greeted the president and offered him a bottle of Diet Coke. Clinton requested a glass, and Provoste brought one, quickly wiping it with a cloth. The president shook hands and signed autographs around the room while sipping his soda. After about 15 minutes, once he had met everyone, Clinton departed the quiet San Remo and returned to the world’s television screens and headlines. After the president’s visit, the San Remo quickly rebranded with the name it still uses today: “La Picá de Clinton.” Clinton photographs and related news clippings adorn the walls, and the presidential Coke bottle and glass are displayed in a case above the counter. Even a “Clinton hot dog” has appeared on the menu, overloaded (as hot dogs always are in Chile) with toppings such as sauerkraut, tomatoes, mayonnaise, and mustard. Years later, those who were present that day are still amazed that a world leader suddenly appeared in their humble establishment. They recall the presidential visit fondly—even though, as Provoste told reporters, “he didn’t leave a tip.”" - ATLAS_OBSCURA

La Pica de Clinton is a fun sandwich shop. The food is good and the portion sizes are large. So it is possible to share a sandwich if you order fries, for example. Despite the fun atmosphere, the place looks a bit dirty. It seems that the last time the floor was properly cleaned was during Clinton’s presidency. Overall, I would recommend it as a place to go once and laugh a little. But I’m not sure I would go a second time.

Got the cazuela de vacuno. my first time having this dish so maybe my expectations were too high. broth had a little flavor and the rest of the ingredients were bland. server was quick and to the point. Clinton theme was different. menu on qr code. available in English.

If you are looking for Chilean food, I would recommend this restaurant. It fulfilled our food experiences in Chile.

Google
The food was good, just nothing to rave at all about. I order a hamburger, and it was just a pattie by itself 😆 The fries was good 👍, a little bit overpriced compared to most other places.

The service was strange. We are from europe and do not speak spanish. We felt so ignored, nobody came and took our order. We came to the bar and asked everything. My coctail was forgotten. But the soup was excellent. Husbands meat was unpleasant.

Food: 3/5 Service: 5/5 Music: 5/5 Bathrooms were downstairs and clean. Didn’t realize the reason for the name of this place until we got there and were greeted by Bill’s face on the menu...

Yelp
Found this place by accident..food is good so is service. Not cheap but worth it. I liked their soups, chicken or beef equally good on the cold day.

Yelp
This Restaurant popped up on Yelp. Got good reviews. Looked intriguing. La Pica de Clinton. Yes folks, this is a Bill Clinton Graceland right in the heart of Santiago Chile!! Evidently Bill stopped in when it was a 7-11 type store. Clinton was here, as President, for a conference of the Americas in April 1998. Driving to an event he was thirsty, saw the Coca-Cola sign, told driver to pull over and he got out, ran in to get a Diet Coke. Surprising EVERYONE, Secret Service, local army and more than anyone else, the owner of the store. The owner would not accept any money. He immediately turned it into a restaurant named in honor of his All Time Favorite USA President. The food is good but not great. The atmosphere is what carries the day. Food is 3 stars plus one for atmosphere.

Yelp
Stopped for a drink after dinner. Great bar list, soccer on, music playing, and of course, Bill Clinton everywhere! Felt like a neighborhood pub. Nice staff.

Yelp
I found nothing remarkable about this place. We tried their self-proclaimed call-to-fame "asado de tira". A braised (rather boiled I'd say) rack of beef ribs. The meat was chewy and flavorless. Some dull fries were the only complement to the dish. Nothing I saw around me looked remotely appetizing. Extremely simple and uninspired fare. I would not recommend this place but for their acceptable price range.
