La Playa, Carmel-by-the-Sea Hotel Review | Hotels Above Par

"Tucked in the heart of Carmel-by-the-Sea, I found La Playa to perfectly embody the village’s quirky, bohemian charm. Nestled among salt-soaked trees and off-beat architecture, the historic property was first built in 1905 as a seaside manse by artist Christian Jorgensen for his wife Angela Ghirardelli, became a hotel 12 years later, and evolved from a stone mansion into a Spanish Colonial–style edifice with terracotta-hued roof tiles, stained-glass windows, colorful ceramic stair risers, and fountain surrounds. Notably, Steve Jobs unveiled the MacBook computer prototype here during an Apple team in 1983. The recent $20 million renovation by Marc & Rose Hospitality with design by Post Company (reopening in Fall 2023) retains the historic character while adding whimsical touches like scalloped light fixtures and custom dark-wood furniture; the January 2024 opening party even featured an immersive theatre performance by Shonda Rhimes’ IAMA group. Luxury here is effortless and understated: champagne is served each morning with a carefully curated breakfast buffet—standouts being bite-sized zesty avocado toast, berry-soaked bread pudding, locally baked pastries, and constantly manned omelette and waffle stations—and chauffeurs quietly shuttle guests around the village. The rambling hotel’s 75 rooms and suites are cozy and characterful thanks to antique-style wooden furniture, rustic tiled bathrooms, and custom plaster lights; offerings range from Poolside Casitas that open onto the outdoor pool with fireplaces and seating areas, to Garden Patio rooms with small, plant-concealed terraces, Classic rooms overlooking the village, sunset-facing Ocean View, Premier and Superior rooms, and three spacious Suites with the best vistas. Days invite lounging in the beautifully landscaped gardens, a game on the giant chess set, or a swim; evenings suit sunset cocktails on patio furniture or the elevated terrace where fire pits replace the evening glow. Bud’s, the on-site dark, moody restaurant and bar, serves well-executed American favorites (oysters, Caesar salad, burger—recommended—and steak) alongside an adventurous cocktail menu; regulars can even reserve lockers for stored liquor, and the playful 10-minute “Dime Time” 10-cent drinks tradition nods to former proprietor Howard E. “Bud” Allen. The hotel also hosts a complimentary wine happy hour in the lobby, lays out freshly baked cookies after 9 pm, offers free WiFi, room service, a shuttle van service within a five-mile radius, and versatile event spaces (Pacific Room, Garden Room, Fireside Room, courtyard and arched colonnade) for meetings and celebrations. With no gym but plenty of nooks for reading, furnished patios, and easy access to Ocean Avenue shops and the beach three steep blocks away, it’s the kind of place designed for a slow vacation." - Dan Howarth

Amazing grounds and location. Wait staff and maid service were all amazing. Breakfast was awesome with lots of choices. Lots of healthy options and G/F as well. Omelets were tasty and the buckwheat waffles were so good. Lots of fresh fruit. Unfortunately, our room was way too noisy from guests above and foot traffic. Must be no insulation between floors?

Google
Beautiful hotel from the outside in. Very charming and has lots to offer from pool to different rooms, great bar, warm cookies every night, breakfast buffet. Rooms: very nice and charming, I love the le labo soaps and shower amenities they smelled amazing, no complaints on the size, nightly water carafe’s brought to the room. My only con is the pillows were horrible and way too thin. Amenities: I loved the warm cookies, pool, and location of the property. The breakfast was only ok, pastries were not warm and did not feel fresh, the fruit was good though. For the price I do not feel that it was completely worth it. I would stay there again considering I feel they have the most to offer compared to other hotels in the area. There was also an amenity fee I was not aware of for $70 a night at the end.

We stayed here recently with friends and loved it! It is such s quaint hotel with beautiful gardens and views! Our room was ocean view and it was so relaxing hearing the waves at night! The staff were so kind! We especially enjoyed the daily wine and cookies!!! Looking foreard to going there again in the future!

Google
Beautiful Historical Property in a perfect location. Excellent breakfast, cozy well-designed and decorated room with all we need and a great partial ocean-view. Short walk to town, short walk to the ocean. Staff were sharp and fun and fast. It is an old building and as such the walls are thin, wasn't a problem for us, and could POSSIBLY be one for you, but probably not. Lots of dogs, all sizes, not a problem for us. Highly recommend this Hotel.

Went to La Playa Hotel for a recent wedding. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous and the outdoor wedding venue is perfect spot. All the food from the Cocktail reception to the diner was delicious. The hotel itself is in a great location as it is just a block or two from the ocean and a few blocks over from Ocean avenue where many restaurants and shops are located. The hotel itself is old but beautiful. The bar is cozy and a great place to hang out at.

We stayed there for 2 nights and really looked the hotel. We booked an Ocean View King and were very pleased. The room wasn’t huge, however was decorated to a very high spec and the bathroom shower was the best. |Breakfast was superb and was a buffet style offering very wholesome options such as fruit and oats,, alongside banana bread and pastries and toast. There is also an egg/omelette station.|The bar is lovely and we had a couple of very nice cocktails. |Every afternoon, Sangria or wine if offered and at around 7pm a tray of gorgeous cookies is made available in reception. |The hotel gardens are lovely and there is a first come first served car park. |The walk to both the town centre and the beach is very easy.

My wife and I stayed from Sunday to Wednesday and we had an absolute grand time at La Playa after having our wedding in Tahoe. When we arrived we were greeted and our bags were brought to our room. Parking around Carmel in general is busy so you either have to park in their parking lot or just around the block. The hotel itself I thought was very cute and timeless. Our room was on the second floor from the main lobby and we had an epic ocean view along with a great view of the hotel grounds. We did have our little pup with us and they were accommodating, they provided us dog treats, along with a bowl and poop bag holder. I did notice our room being a little tight and after reviewing some of the other layouts we did get a smaller room WHICH we didn't mind because we made it work, and we sent most of our time out around town or enjoying the hotel itself. Breakfast was phenomenal, we had it every day. We had the champagne hour every day, and the cookies!!! We did take advantage of the shuttle. Those hills can get brutal after a few days. We enjoyed the pool and sitting outside playing chess. The location I think is great, you are a couple blocks from the beach and a couple blocks from town. We didn't get to experience Dime time at Buds :(. We didn't get to leverage our honeymoon card but we did overall enjoy our time here and would stay again.

My now husband and I got married on the Big Sur coast and we stayed at this hotel. This hotel is our favorite by far. The details of service, the comfort of the rooms, the romantic ambiance, and the location have far exceeded my expectations. We will definitely return!!

Yelp
This review is strictly about it being a wedding venue, and a beautiful one at that! I recently went to La Playa Hotel as a guest of a wedding and wow, everything is so picturesque, even on a gloomy Carmel day. PROS: + have your whole wedding in just one venue: a stunning reception outside in their courtyard area followed by a cocktail hour on the balcony (seems like it could also be in the courtyard area, they have enough room) followed by the reception in their banquet room and an after party in their bar next door. + Views of the ocean from your reception and balcony space - a beautiful backdrop! + Super helpful and quick staff, servers, and bartenders + of course with any hotel venue, it is super convenient for the bride and groom and their wedding party to get ready onsite CONS: + parking is very limited in the area for guests. I'd recommend taking rideshare if possible. + the balcony as a cocktail hour space can get tight depending on how many guests you want to have there + a truly minor inconvenience, but there's a lot of stairs to get from one place to the next If you're staying there, it's also super close to the downtown area and the beach so it's a pretty central location to enjoy Carmel.

Yelp
La Playa Hotel is such a charming hotel in Carmel located a couple of blocks from the beach and downtown! The service is extraordinary, they have a nice complementary cocktail social, a champagne breakfast, a shuttle to downtown, and the hotel and rooms are so cute! The hotel is also not too far from the Laguna Seca Raceway! I can't think of anything that needs improvement.

Yelp
Unfortunately, the service we received left us very disappointed. Our server, Vanessa, did not provide basic essentials such as utensils and napkins when bringing our appetizers. I had to get up and find her in order to request them. Throughout the evening, she never offered water, and when I requested it, she only brought one glass and did not extend the courtesy of asking my guest if he would like some as well. No refills were offered either. The pattern continued when entrées arrived--food was dropped off without follow-up, and the server disappeared for long stretches of time. Considering that the restaurant was nearly empty when we arrived at 8 pm (we were the only one having dinner) the lack of attentiveness was surprising. What made the experience worse was the attitude displayed when I asked for such basic requests as water. Given the caliber and pricing of your establishment, I expected a much higher level of service. Unfortunately, this left us with a very negative impression and makes us hesitant to return.

Yelp
What an amazing place to stay, we were referred by my close friend, we loved every thing about our stay. What a lovely hotel with beautiful view every where you turn. We will be here again.

Yelp
Carmel is an absolute dream! La Playa hotel is a beautiful and historic building in the heart of town. Walking distance from both the beach and downtown area. The hotel is beautiful! The staff at times seemed unfriendly and not what I expected with the price tag. The walls are super thin! You can hear everything'. The room was lovely with amazing decor however lacked closet space. We loved the breakfast, happy hour, and evening cookies. Overall it was a magical stay in Carmel!

Yelp
We stayed here for our anniversary and engagement. This place is absolutely stunning from the views to (dime time). Michael one of the leads there is so amazing he really made us feel at home. We will never forget our experience here at La Playa hotel. We will continue to stay here and create many more memories. Thank toyou all the staff that made our anniversary/engagement special

Yelp
AMAZING HOTEL and stayed here for my wedding weekend! Everyone needs to either stay or visit La Playa Hotel while they're in Carmel. So pretty, quaint, artistic, and moving how the place has been decorated with a gorgeous view of the ocean, upscale bar and fireplace lounge area. The rooms were so clean, an ode to the classy past of Carmel, with modern aesthetics at the same time, making the perfect blend. Plus the breakfast is a must try. I will absolutely be coming back and recommending others.

Yelp
Check in was seamless. Excellent customer service. Was told there were wine and freshly baked cookies but never saw anything. Room was small, clean, apx 350 sq ft. Beautiful view of ocean from our window. Wonderful in room bar. Food was fantastic, again servers were professional, polite and friendly. Food was fantastic. Great wedge salad, delicious halibut with polenta and an amazing dessert. The hotel is overall quiet but the people above us were loud and the sounds carried. Breakfast buffet was fabulous. So many choices. Breakfast burritos, muffins, croissants, waffles, omelets, coffee, mimosas, potato's, fresh fruit and so much more

Yelp
We had booked an ocean view king suite and was very much looking forward to sitting on the patio with the ocean in the distance - I brought multiple books to enjoy on the outdoor patio while feeling the ocean breeze and sipping wine. Before we arrived, we were offered an upgrade to the suite - their "best room", in their words. Who could resist - so we took it. The room was on the 3rd floor and the stairs were no problem. The living room had a view of the houses across the street and the bedroom had a beautiful view of the hotel's second story roof and chimney. The red shingles were in multiple shades of red, which accented the brick chimney and red rusted vents. No deck or patio. The room itself was large enough, but very dated - drab and dark. I think next time I will keep the ocean view room.

Yelp
What a beautiful historical property! We enjoyed a room by the pool which had a huge living room, big bedroom and lovely bath. They really spoil you here with wine in the afternoon, warm chocolate chip cookies at night and the most amazing breakfast! They even have drivers to take you to restaurants in the area. The lobby even has a huge bowl of fresh fruit. Definitely worth staying here for a special occasion!

Yelp
This review is purely for the bar, July 2025. Decent drinks but very meh service. For the price, I wish they were more attentive to the customers. We wanted a second round and were thinking about ordering dinner, but it seriously took 20+ minutes to get the bartenders attention. It wasn't even that busy, but they were just super distracted "setting up bar." It was like 7pm. Come on! Get your s---t together! We closed and left. B'bye!

Yelp
Unfortunately you don't get what you pay for here. Spent $3500 for three nights with our dog. Despite their pet friendly claim, it's clear they weren't prepared as we were not given a garden patio room as advertised even though the pet registration form was submitted right after booking. I've never stayed at a "luxury" hotel that charges $250 for a pet fee that couldn't even provide dog bowls, the bare minimum. Some pros: -Breakfast buffet was decent -Great location two blocks from the beach and town Cons: -Paper thin walls you could hear everything -Front desk staff lacked basic hospitality, no offer to help with bags as we clearly struggled -Inconvenient parking lot. It's a trek to get to the front desk, and there are no signs making arrival confusing -Walkways are a hazard

Yelp
Great place, amazing staff and it's very convenient, close to the shopping area, and very close to the beach...

Yelp
I'm all about "stay-cations" in unique and gorgeous boutique hotels. La Playa is a place that one has to experience for oneself. Anyone that takes my word for it will understand upon arrival and throughout the duration of stay. Impressive across the board. *curtsy

Nathan B.

Yelp
The hotel room we got was $700+ a night and it was incredibly moldy and smelly and they wouldn't do anything other than send staff to spray Lysol

Philip M.

Yelp
This is a really upscale high priced hotel with lots of comfort issues for the guests. This property is over 100 years old and there is no sound proofing, old single pane windows, no window screens, un even floors /walkways....... Lots more problems for safety and comfort. Also, the 20 million dollar renovation was paint, AC/heat and outdoor upgrades. The restaurant was very limited as well. All said not worth the average price of $700 per night. Con: poor comfort, hotel is worn out, not Disabled friendly, poor food, rooms small, no closet space, no parking, cold water pool, hazards outside walking path, price out of sight for value, house keeping substandard... Pros: location, staff, bar entertainment, outdoor garden.

Yelp
La Playa Hotel is the jewel of Carmel by the Sea. From check in to check out the service in every area was fantastic. Great attention to detail begins in the lobby, the reception desk, the fireplace and the cozy alcove. Upon check in we were offered the complimentary afternoon Sangria. After settling into our lovely appointed rooms we relaxed on the patio surrounded by a lush garden sipping our Sangria. The rooms are spacious, a small table and chair, a chaise was a perfect spot reading a book and the rotary phone added to the charm. The Bar/Armoire is absolutely beautiful, be sure to read the cards in the wood box. The bed was comfortable with high quality linens and pillows. I usually prefer my own hair products but La Playa's Le Labo shampoo, conditioner and shower gel were superior to the typical hotel bath products. I ordered the lotion it was so hydrating with a subtle scent. The classic elegance of La Playa is reminiscent of a European style hotel. We walked the path to the pool, the area was of average size but sufficient with a fire pit and lounge chairs with towels. The surrounding gardens were in full bloom with multiple places to relax. Adults and children were enjoying the giant Chess game. Start your day with a Mimosa or a glass of champagne followed by a delicious breakfast buffet. Omelettes and waffles are made to order, try the tasty gluten free carrot muffin and the avocado toast. You can dine in the main space, on the deck or in Bud's. After a day exploring the area the smell of warm chocolate chip cookies upon entering the lobby were difficult to resist. The Mercedes SUV will take you and pick you up for dinner at local restaurants. We enjoyed Bud's Bar in the hotel after dinner for the live music on a Thursday evening. Bring some dimes for "Dime Time" , the bartender rings a bell and for ten minutes cocktails are a dime. If you are a frequent visitor to Bud's you can become a member of their signature cabinet program and keep your favorite bottle in your own personal cabinet. La Playa's location is perfect, a short walk to Ocean Avenue for restaurants and shopping and a quick walk to Carmel Beach. The manager Brett, Kathleen at the reception desk and Michael were professional, friendly and welcoming. We are fortunate to live only a few hours drive from Carmel and visit often, La Playa is a special place that we look forward to returning soon.

Yelp
The La Playa Hotel is the old grand Dame of Carmel. It is undergone many remodels and upgrades over its 110 year history. The service here is exceptional, the hotel rooms are beautiful, and the little pluses that are included are fantastic. Don't be put off by its location because it's perfect. Lying between the beach and the village is a wonderful location. Their resort fee include so much it's amazing everything from a complementary brunch after your stay to a car service into the village for dinner. A friendly and very knowledgeable staff about the history of the hotel but also that of Carmel itself. We were delighted to stay there this time and look forward to our return visit. Thank you to Kathleen, Don, and the rest of the staff for making us feel so welcome on this special getaway.

Yelp
The fact that this place isn't at 5 stars is astounding!!! This is the BEST place to stay in Carmel. Outstanding service staff, the breakfast is to die for, and the overall atmosphere and grounds are STUNNING. The best hotel experience I've ever had by far. Very picturesque. Free shuttle to take you to dinner in Carmel- warm cookies in the lobby, great bar, and the staff is so helpful and welcoming. We come here every Valentine's Day and always love our stay.

Yelp
Our first time staying in Carmel by the sea. This hotel has been on my wife's bucket list for a while so we decided to take a last minute trip. We've stayed at many coastal hotels throughout California and we both agree that the staff hospitality and attention to detail far exceeds what we've experienced in more expensive luxury hotels. The rooms were very quaint. The hotel sits about two blocks from Carmel beach. Their gardens are beautiful and you could easily spend hours relaxing in the many cozy nooks. Their complimentary champagne breakfast was delicious. From the omelette bar to the delightful buffet area we enjoyed everything they offered. We will definitely be back !

Yelp
The Place is sowuiet and peaceful, staff are all nice and friendly, every staff I encountered are all accomodating. Oceanview room is spectacular and very classy in the inside.Bar and restaurant are a destination to visit. Overall we had a great time and got treated very well. And to add they have a limo service to take you to a restaurant that you want to dine for the night. Its a touch of good hospitality service. Kudos to all the staff and will definitely comeback for a night stay again. The location is great and walking distance to Carmel Beach.

Yelp
This is probably the most expensive hotel I'll ever stay at! It's hard to believe my room was the cheapest esp. compared to the ones attached to the main hotel building. It was essentially an apartment space, with a living room + a dining table! Amazing! Perhaps because others got an ocean view, while mine had the pool right outside my door. Additional daily complimentary perks include: champagne breakfast buffet, midday wine/sangria/spritz and chocolate chip cookies in the evening. The cookies were meh but let's not pass up freebies when the hotel costs an arm and a leg! For a swanky hotel, I've got two mini gripes. I could hear the people in the room next to me quite clearly, and I could've used more hot shower water. I turned it all the way, it wasn't terrible but not even burning. While I enjoyed my stay, I keep asking - is this place worth its price tag? The property comes with ocean view and access -- barely a minute walk away! I loved that. I didn't walk to downtown but later realized it would've been an easy 8-min. trek. I also loved that they have a shuttle (re: branded SUV) to take you to and from downtown Carmel, as well as pick up your to-go order if you don't feel like venturing for dinner. However it is limited to that area only. Speaking of great service, someone will carry your luggage and walk you to your room once you're checked in! Which was a big help esp. since my room was outside, kindof like an in-law unit :) I would be open to booking here again maybe for a special occasion. I'd equally be open to staying elsewhere in the same vicinity for a couple hundred bucks less! Given the $$$, you almost want to spend as much time at the hotel to get your money's worth hahha. Clearly I'm not used to the bougie life! The public restroom is so fancy you dry your hands with cloth towels instead of paper!
google avatar

Yelp
This hotel is an iconic gem! My husband can't stop talking about the beautiful landscaping throughout. Our room opened up to the ocean, it was on the small side which was fine, we spent our time in town, in the hotel grounds and at the ocean. The service and food was excellent, they had a brunch the I could have enjoyed all day! The California movie star vibe was captured perfectly!

Yelp
OMG if I could give 10 stars I would! This place was BEYOND AMAZING & I absolutely HIGHLY recommend! It's definitely worth every penny!! This isn't just a Carmel accommodation, it was an entire getaway experience where we were able to be fully present & just relax & enjoy every minute & detail. I mean EVERYTHING was 10/10!! The customer service was so kind, warming, helpful, amazing--from the front desk to the bell service to the restaurant service & even the car service offered in the evening so you don't need to drive into town & worry about parking! LOVED that added service! And OMG, EVERY single detail in this hotel was so well-thought out! From every inch of the lobby, the different lounge rooms & areas, the room. I adored the room details not just the vintage decor but also the added touches like the letter with wax seal which enclosed details for our stay, a sweet note plus wine welcoming our stay & celebrating our wedding anniversary, even the little paper notes that hotels usually have well it wasn't just a basic pad of paper it was actual like cardstock notes held together with a small gold vintage-styled clip. They really were so intentional with EVERY detail from decor to comforts to necessities to luxury to service! We had a garden & ocean view room & I loved the style of the windows & how they opened up to the sound of the ocean & the feel of the cool ocean air. I loved the way they styled the bar in the room, it is unlike any other I've seen & very much aligned with the theme of the rest of the hotel style & vibe! They even had additional snacks & treats as well as a variety of drinks to offer additionally. Even the detail of the little info cards on the bar was very intentional. They had the BEST BREAKFAST SPREAD I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED IN ANY HOTEL!! They really had EVERYTHING, I wish I had taken videos & pictures of it but I'm such a foodie that I was just really present & enjoying & indulging in everything they had to offer. When you first walk in there's a center table with avocado toast, smoked salmon toast, oatmeal & berries, charcuterie, fruit spread, potatoes with bell peppers & onion, hard-boiled eggs, there were the most extravagant offerings I've seen at a complimentary breakfast! To the right they had tables that offered hot tea, coffee, juices, water, variety of breads & bagels. And then that wasn't even it, you walk out to the terrace & they had a waffle station AND an entire omelette bar with ALL the fixings you could possibly want! AND THEN they ALSO had service where waitresses/waiters would offer drink service & clean up & more. There were heaters outside so it was really nice plus you got the morning sun with the cool morning ocean breeze & the view overlooked the whole hotel garden area plus the ocean. I could've spent all morning there it was absolutely incredible all around! The BEST complimentary breakfast experience I have EVER had at a hotel & especially being a foodie that was definitely one of my favorite things about this place! And then we enjoyed the garden area with the giant chess board & pieces, all the flowers, the water fountain, the lounge area, even the pool was so nice! And in the evening they serve homemade chocolate chip cookies for all the guests too it was delicious & so thoughtful! We only stayed one night but next time will definitely stay longer so that we can really indulge & enjoy all that La Playa has to offer cause it was the most amazing hotel experience HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT IS SO WORTH IT!!

Yelp
This hotel is very expensive and the classic rooms are so so tiny. It couldn't even allow a crib to fit in. We stayed for two nights but there is no room service. The front desk never picked up your call, and no one seems like to really care about our experience here. Totally disappointed and will never come back again.

Alexi C.

Yelp
La Playa has my heart! The new renovation preserved the old charm while making incredible upgrades to the rooms. The in-room bars are at a level I've never seen before! I love the whimsy and creativity, from the historical welcome letter to the special golden key left in my room to discover a personal locker at Bud's Bar for a night cap! La Playa is wonderful for business meetings, families, and couples get aways. The Carmel sea fills the soul, but again La Playa has my heart!

Yelp
La Playa is an AMAZING hotel. It truly is as luxurious as you could get in Carmel. I loved the amenities including the champagne breakfast (which was amazing), the free shuttle to any downtown Carmel location, and the spritz happy hour and cookies in the lobby. We stayed in the poolside casita and it was so lovely to walk right outside our door and be at the pool. The weather cooperated with us for half our trip and we loved laying by the pool and getting some sun. We went to Bud's bar for pre-dinner drinks and while the drinks were tasty, the olive and cheese plate left a lot to be desired for $18. The drinks are around $17-$20 each, but that was to be expected. Overall, I would absolutely recommend as long as you can afford around $1,000 a night (again was for our Honeymoon so we splurged)

Chanli S.

Yelp
Given this place was recently renovated, I was surprised to the lack of thought that went into the interior design of the rooms. First, we wanted to book a suite but then had to downgrade because the suite was on the fourth floor with no elevator and one of us was in a wheelchair. The rooms are small. There is no counter space on the bathroom to put toiletries. There's no space to lay out our luggage. The Staff and service were not the greatest. Each time we asked for something, they tell you there is an additional charge. When they say there is free happy hour each day, they hide the drinks behind the reception area. The ADA rooms are also super small and not great for someone traveling in a wheelchair. Honestly, this place is overpriced. Not recommended and will not be back.

Yelp
Literally the perfect little hotel to stay at in Carmel! The hotel / grounds are amazing and the breakfast included in your stay is such a nice touch and was a perfect way to start the day each morning. It's so close to the beach and downtown so all very walkable. 100/10. Definitely will be back!

Adriana O.

Yelp
As we arrived we were surprised with a free upgraded to an amazing room with the most beautiful ocean view. We were celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary. In the room a very nice bottle of champagne and a beautiful note welcomed us. The staff in this hotel is incredible. J, Brenda, and others were so welcoming, kind and genuinely welcoming! We were very impressed. Now, the hotel is beautiful, charming, cozy and elegant! Fireplaces throughout, a library with board games, fireplace varanda with ocean views, manicured garden. Super comfortable bed, large bathroom and my favorite Lê Labo products everywhere. 2 blocks from the beach, a few blocks from downtown, absolutely the best location. Breakfast is amazing! Free cocktails Friday and Saturday night! Nightly warm chocolate chip cookies! I can't say enough about my wonderful weekend at La Playa! What a great find! We will be back soon!

Yelp
La Playa Hotel is a perfect blend of luxury and comfort. Our room had amazing ocean views and was spotlessly clean. The staff went above and beyond, making us feel truly welcome. Highlights: Stunning location Comfortable, well-appointed rooms Exceptional service Delicious breakfast (try the croissants!) Nice touches like Verve Coffee and welcome champagne Whether you're here for a romantic getaway or exploring Carmel, La Playa Hotel is an excellent choice. We'll definitely be back! Pros: Beautiful views, great service, perfect location Cons: None - we loved every minute!

Yelp
You are greeted by staff of bygone charm and a refreshing hotel scent . Few blocks away from Carmel beach, you can hear the waves at night when all is quiet. Lovely intimate inviting garden areas for relaxing and lounging. La Playa hotel is rich in history and was recently renovated reminiscent of nostalgic times. Breakfast buffet and service is remarkable and not to be missed. A must return stay when in Carmel by the Sea.

Yelp
The aesthetic, breakfast, and vibes were perfect. I will definitely come back in the future

Yelp
One of the best hotels in Carmel. Many rooms have ocean views which is rare in Carmel. Close to beach and easy walk to downtown. Rooms are nicely decorated. They also have an SUV shuttle that takes you back forth to downtown if you need it. Great buffet breakfast! Cook to order eggs and omelets as well as waffles. I would recommend it to anyone that can afford it.

Yelp
This hotel is aesthetically pleasing with the recent renovations. It is such a vibe that you'll love being there. The breakfast was amazing, there are coffee, mimosas, OJ, mimosas, GF muffins, potato dish, chia seed yogurt, other yogurts, fresh fruits, salsa, avocado wrapped eggs, 3 kinds of breads, butter, croissants...etc. There are to be made waffles and omelets, outside the buffet breakfast. There are two sitting area but I think if it gets packed you can move to the Garden Room. There are fireplaces lit up during the day and night for chilly areas. I couldn't believe there was a fresh fruit bowl in the lobby area. Initially I thought it was a decor; there were grapes, mandarins, oranges, and green apples. I couldn't resist and took two mandarins, I wasn't sure if I could take it. XD The con is having to ask for the WiFi information and parking. I didn't know where the parking was because it was in the back and had forgotten to ask. There's no map available for breakfast, you just follow everyone and the smell. Overall, I would definitely stay again in the future. Don't forget about the late night cookies starting at 7:30 pm-9pm. I think you can take as many as you'd like.

Yelp
Went to La Playa to celebrate my 61st birthday. I had celebrated my 21st birthday there, having my first ever martini. I also worked at La Playa as a Pastry Chef in the '90's. The music was wonderful. The other guests were great, but I have never felt so uncelebrated at any other establishment as I did at the La Playa Hotel. I had such great memories of being there in the past as both a guest and employee. If I were to use one word to sum up my experience at Bud's, it would be regretful. Will not return.

Yelp
I can't pick the right adjectives...let's go with, quaint, beautiful (gardens, building, interior) with an abundance of friendly staff everywhere. Feels like a charming Mediterranean getaway fitting the European feel of wonderful Carmel by the Sea. Spent a rainy weekend celebrating our 30th anniversary at the place we got married. The front desk staff made us feel welcomed, management had upgraded our room to the same suite we stayed in on our wedding night (how freaking nice was that!?!?!) and had a bottle of champagne on ice and a fruit basket ready in our room. The rain would have been a bummer if we weren't at La Playa! The covered and heated outdoor patio overlooking the gardens at Bud's was a great place to eat, drink and just be at peace. Oh and the afternoon free Sangria bar and evening chocolate chip cookies (to die for cookies btw) were very nice..especially in Carmel where the weather can be unpredictable and sometimes staying put is the best option. 6/5* and we'll celebrate our anniversary at La Playa again! Oh! And the included breakfast buffet at Bud's was luxurious, unique in selection and the best included hotel breakfast we've ever experienced! Definitely don't sleep in and miss breakfasts at La Playa!

Yelp
We spent three great nights here. Friendly staff. Rooms recently updated and the beds super comfy Breakfast is included. Delicious breakfast buffet. Lots of yummy choices. A free glass of wine in the late afternoon and delicious chocolate chip cookies at bedtime. Very nice, close to downtown Carmel and the beach. They have a free house car to take you and pick you up after dinner Only one small glitch was the food at the bar, Buds, was subpar from the rest of the hotel Give this place a try. It's great

Yelp
Everything about this hotel was top notch. The location, ambiance, and service were all amazing. I will recommend it for all future travelers.

Yelp
I had a very poor experience staying at this hotel. The property is close to beach and well designed but it is difficult to recommend this place. First off all the parking is a disaster and it is impossible to find anything close by near the hotel. At check in - I had to ask for different things like internet access, hotel amenities etc. The worst part is restaurant service - the service at the evening restaurant is very poor. The service is non existent here and the bar staff is very rude. Seeing all the negative reviews of the restaurant staff it is clear that the hotel management has no interest in fixing this. I will not return here or recommend this hotel to my friends

Yelp
Labor Day weekend: I received a phone call 10 am the day of my reservation. Bags packed keys in hand they tell me they have had a reservation system glitch and double booked the hotel. After asking, only offering a voucher for another weekend. Unapologetic and not working to secure me other accommodations. So much for decades of loyalty. This heads up should have come much earlier with more assistance and comps. Very disappointing especially from this iconic hotel.

Yelp
Bar food service is weak and uninteresting. Weak menu with odd combinations of food which are strange and disappointing.

Yelp
Absolutely my favorite hotel in Carmel. Excellent staff here. The place is fastidiously cared for. I take my sangria that the front desk just poured and head to the restaurant. The sea breeze is coming thru the window up here on the veranda at the beautiful and historical La Playa. The grounds are beautiful and my imagination ushers in an old film of bygone eras. Days of croquet, long gone laughter and the speakeasy. Our room is clean and well appointed. Michael helps us with our luggage AND dinner reservations. He's wonderful. This place is so peaceful. I'm in need of peaceful. I know what a treat this is and I'm not going to want to leave in a few days. I hope others see this and come enjoy a sweet rest here also.

Yelp
Hi Rachel, As of today there has not been one person trying to contact me about what happened, and as I read down the list of reviews this happened to multiple people over the past weekend. If u don't want to respond truthfully here I can go to the other social media outlets I have and post my thoughts about the way we were treated. Bottom line, it's just terrible customer service. You ruined our weekend and it looks like you did the same to many others.

Yelp
Booked a garden view room, and was sent a message at 8pm the night prior to check in that they oversold the hotel and could not accommodate us. No offer to help or sort it out, just left out to dry.

Yelp
This place is magical....more review and pictures to come, too busy enjoying it. The beauty, the scents, the sounds, the proximity to the ocean, the service....it truly is a gem.

Yelp
We loved our stay at La Playa, everyone was amazing. The grounds are beautiful and something out of a garden book, the staff was top notch and completely took care of any needs we had. Alan helped us a few times and was the most amazing person here, assisting us with reservations and anything we needed, greeting us with a smile. In fact, everyone there greeted us with a smile and said hi. Jorge was our server at the amazing free breakfast and always took care of anything we needed to eat or drink. He always made sure we had a full mimosa and hot coffee. Miguel ran the waffle and omelette counter very efficiently, always with a smile. I can't say enough about the most relaxing and beautiful hotel in Carmel. The bar reminds me of a Gatsby-era dark and intimate setting with very tasty libations. They even have a dime time where, at the bartender's discretion for 10 minutes, you can get a drink for a dime. Let's talk about the walkabouts; great location as it's close to the beach yet near all the shops. There's also a swimming pool for those who want to swim. We were lucky enough to catch a beautiful wedding at the site. Very well done, La Playa. Can't wait to see you guys soon! Oh, and thanks to Chi for loading our luggage!

Yelp
This hotel is superb. We have been coming here for my bday for the past three years and we are never going to go to another hotel in Carmel. La Playa is THE best hotel in Carmel. I kind of wish it could remain a little hidden gem, but they truly deserve to get all the recognition and business they have!! It has the old charm, but with a modern and elevated twist. It has history, it has good food (dare i say THE best champagne breakfast I've ever had in the US since living here for 7 years), good drinks, amazing atmosphere. The rooms are cozy and everything is curated to the last small detail. I absolutely love it. I wish I could live here ahahah! The staff is also amazing and super friendly. It is in a central location but also not in the middle of the city where it gets crowded during the weekend, you can still walk to all the shops and the beach but without the traffic you get when you're right on Ocean Ave. I can't wait for my bday next year to go back!!!!!!!!!

Yelp
If I have one vice, it's traveling. Not just traveling, but traveling well. There's no Four Seasons in Carmel. The closest Ritz Carlton is Half Moon Bay...and if you want a room at the St Regis, you'll have to travel to San Francisco. But...if you want to stay at a boutique style hotel in Carmel that is world class, stay at La Playa Carmel. My wife and I are repeat visitors. We had an opportunity to stay in one of their remodeled rooms this past weekend. Exquisite. Understated elegance. Clean not sterile, but clean. There was firm comfortable bed wrapped in crisp linens. The room had a bit of a Great Gatsby feel to it but updated. In my mind, we got the best of both worlds. The perfect blend of vintage glamour and modern luxury. Think Beverly Hills Hotel. The location of the property is perfect. Down by the ocean and "just" a few steps away from the hustle and bustle of Ocean Avenue...as well as the noise. Don't feel like walking? Michael will be right there to shuttle you in to town. Pick you up as well! Even if you get lost and have no idea where you are like yours truly! From check in to check out the service was impeccable. More importantly, it's sincere and genuine. These people seem to love their job and it shows up on the gigantic smiles on their faces. The grounds are magnificent. It was as if the hotel was resurrected right in the middle of a giant meadow filled with the most exotic colorful flowers on planet earth. It's just gorgeous. Tranquil. The pool is even heated. You feel like breakfast? They've got you covered there as well. The breakfast buffet, which is included in your stay, was fresh and plentiful. Do you want a custom omelette at the omelette station? Done. How about a waffle hot off the iron? Do you want fresh fruit with that? Hot syrup? Or how about your choice of pastries? Bacon? Potatoes? The list goes on... I think you get the picture! In a word, Delicious. Brett runs the show there. He's the general manager. I have been fortunate enough to have a few interactions with him. He seems to be very proud of his "home"...and it's a home he wants you to enjoy and stay a while. To meet the other "family members" that are there to make your time that much more enjoyable...and boy do they. So do yourself a favor. Run on over to Brett's home, a.k.a. La Playa Carmel. Hang out with the family members and stay a while. It's like that Eagles song, Hotel California... "You can check-out any time you like" "But you can never leave!" ...and that would be ok. Well done Brett & staff. See you next month! JR
