The 36 Best Restaurants in Mexico City, From the Splurge-Worthy to Streetside Tamale Stands | Condé Nast Traveler

"La Polar has been perfecting its birria recipe—a consommé with tender shreds of goat, clove-spiked red salsa, and chopped white onion—for more than 80 years. The best way to eat it, which you'll notice if you check the locals all around you, is to fold the meat into warm tortillas, DIY-taco style, then chase your bite with a spoonful of broth. A side order of avocado, and of course, ice cold beer from the tap, rounds out the meal, best eaten when the place is at its liveliest from 3 to 6 p.m." - Naomi Tomky, Scarlett Lindeman

Yelp
Backstory: I came to Mexico City with my boyfriend for a family reunion. We stayed with family and they took us to all the spots. We are so grateful because planning was on the minimal and we got to hang like the locals. This was the only place that they took us that had an actual name/was on Yelp. Everywhere else were little hole in the walls that I don't even know the name of. So if La Polar made the itinerary, it had to be worth the hype. We came thru in the afternoon after checking out the central. It was LIT! The mariachi were popping off, everyone was having a good time, and bottles were being popped. When we're with family, we don't bother even looking at the menus. They order the best thing and we trust. I got the birria. The bowl was huge! This ain't the trendy greasy heavy, consommé in the separate cup type of birria. This is a whole bowl with REFILLABLE consommé. You have to go in with all the fix ins too, do not be stingy. Super filling and enough for a second meal, but you will not leave without dessert. The postres man will post up with his tray full of sweets and BOOM- you're hungry again lol. The hospitality 10/10. Indoor seatings with an upstairs. Mariachis upon request.

Yelp
I had high expectations for this place. Sadly. It was very disappointing. Not the best birria I've ever had by any means. I ordered the mazisa version of it. Very greasy. I won't be coming back. Nothing compared to Michoacanissimo by UNAM

Yelp
Birria is good, my word of advise is ask for it already mixed. We did the mistake of asking for it separate which is pretty much the clear stew. It took a whole lot of sauce to make it taste like Birria, once we got it down to the right taste to food was Delish. The atmosphere is nice and Alive not to overwhelming but you can tell it can it can be a party house at night. We did Sunday breakfast it hit the spot.

Yelp
Beware of the prices at La Polar. We had two bowls of birria and six Mexican beers, total 606 pesos! I have posted a picture of the receipt. Avocados and cheese each cost 47 pesos extra. Corona, Montejo, and Victoria cost 46 pesos a bottled, regular 12oz bottles. They do not have a menu so it was defiantly an unexpected bill. Everything tasted good, but the prices were way too high. We had a good afternoon watching fútbol, even though the storm knocked out the already fuzzy satellite TV signal. The TV went black just in time to miss the final goal in the last minute of the game. They have mariachis and a norteño band walking around and they alternate playing songs. It is very loud. We didn't order a song so I don't know what it would have cost. Both bands were good and you could hear and enjoy the music played at other tables. I liked the mariachis and norteño music a lot more that the bands at the famous Plaza Garibaldi. The people at the nearby tables seemed like they were friendly and having a good time. However, the people at the very next table over were very inebriated. It was a little uncomfortable. The birrieria has been around since 1934 and the decor is strange but not terrible, ok I admit some people would find it terrible, but I enjoyed the random decorating decisions. We sat upstairs. There is a bearskin rug on the wall. On one side of it there is a scarface picture, on the other side a crucifix and the virgin. There are two taxidermy goats wearing fútbol jerseys, one is positioned to look like it is eating a plant. There are a few taxidermy animal heads, an Egyptian themed black velvet like artwork and stain glass above the bar featuring polar bears and booze. I loved the stain glass. They have signs stating they are 100% tobacco free, but we were sitting in the smoking section. It seemed as if we were inside but when it started to rain we realized the roof was open. The roof retracts and it was quickly closed with the help of a motor. This was an unexpectedly expensive meal. In my opinion the overall experience is not worth the price.

Yelp
They say they have the best birria in Mexico. I don't doubt it.

Yelp
Great place for tourists, maybe not for locals. The place is stereotypical Mexican, and they have a giant Mariachi band that goes from table to table playing songs that are requested. The menu is short and sweet, birria or birria in a taco or on a tostada, that's about it. The pricing is too for those of us who know where you can get birria just as good for way less (go to a tianguis). But I'll be honest, 1 bowl is absolutely giant!! And the birria is quite delicious. Extra avocado cost $40 pesos but you do get 2 full avocados with that order. I'm glad I took my mom there so she could see, but I don't think I'll go back.

Yelp
Evetytime I'm in the city I try to stop by this place . It's no doubt one of the best places for birria. You get charged for avocado so if they offer it make sure u really want it. I would also ask the cost of each size plate before hand. Aside from all that this place is really good.

Yelp
Went in for Sunday breakfast with family while visiting the city. Food was good but we ordered the Birria separately, meaning we had to add the sauce on our own. We had to use a whole lots of sauce to make it taste perfect. With the sauce included then it takes good
