20 Must-See Places to Visit in Colombia (Updated 2025)

"One of the few accommodation options near the Tierradentro archaeological site, La Portada Hospedaje is a family-run lodge in the tiny town of San Andrés just outside the site that offers home-cooked meals and plenty of hammocks to relax in." - Matthew Kepnes

There's a reason that La Portado is an institution in Tierradentro. The gracious senora who runs it looked after our every need. We spent 2 nights in this simple hotel and ate all our meals there. Our room had 2 beds (one full size, one twin) and a bathroom with plenty of water in the shower. Our meals, which we ate on the covered veranda, were freshly prepared and good: soup, steak, rice, a cooked vegetable, salad and a small dessert one night; soup rice, potato salad, cooked carrots and green beans, and dessert, the 2nd night. There is good wifi on the veranda but not in the rooms||The hotel is well located to do the loop through the archeological park. Tierradentro is somewhat remote, down a long dirt road, so all accommodations are simple. La Portada provides hospitality and comfort in this setting. My rating is based on that. We definitely recommend it to other travelers and would stay there again.

Good food for a great price, good service, the staff are friendly and welcoming. Simple menu but food and juices are fresh. There are only two restaurants in town and this one is definitely the best! Breakfast was $11,000 and lunch was $20,000 but came with soup, salad, rice, beans, porkchop and fresh juice.

Once in a while a place and people capture your heart. For us it’s La Portada and its wonderful owners Leonardo and María Eva. They are delightful hosts - genuine and warm - and committed to providing their visitors with an authentic visit. María Eva is a fantastic cook - her meals are fresh and healthy. The menu changes daily and includes homemade breads and jams. Leonardo was a fantastic guide to all of the sites in Tierradentro including an amazing hike to Aguacate. He is knowledgeable about plants and birds too, not to mention an accomplished woodworker. The rooms are simple and clean, the rural town vibrant yet quiet. There’s room to relax on a lovely terrace with hammocks amidst a small garden. We highly recommend this special place and long to return!|

Probably the best place to stay in a village of very limited options. Rooms aren't fancy but are clean and reasonably comfortable, although the beds are a bit hard. They also have good showers with hot water. ||The owners are very warm, helpful and hospitable but this is not an English speaking area so have your Google translate at the ready. ||The food was simple but fresh and tasty. A three course evening meal with a glass of fresh orange juice cost less than 5 gbp.||There is absolutely nothing to do of an evening so pack a good book.

A mum and dad run restaurant & accommodation. They only speak Spanish but we were able to communicate. Food is excellent, 20,000COP for lunch or dinner meal. They even had wine in stock. Showers hot, bed comfortable. This is a remote location that was difficult to get to but made so much better by the warm hospitality received from the owners on our arrival. Waking up to views of the hills and birds chirping was bliss. Location is in the middle of the Tierradentro UNESCO listed park. For us it was worth the travel to get to and one of our highlights of our trip so far.

We LOVED out time at La Portada. Not only was it conveniently RIGHT at the trailhead to our favorite trailhead in Colombia, the hosts were the best. They were warm, welcoming, and made incredible food... even catered to my vegetarian diet. The room we stayed in was small but had a high ceiling and was quite clean. There are shaded hammocks to rest in after a long day of hiking, and the cafe/restaurant is a fabulous place to spend some time. I highly recommend supporting this fabulous, family-run business!

La Portada is a special inn situated in a quiet but vibrant rural community. The rooms are simple and straightforward and there are nice outdoor areas for relaxing. We spent 3 wonderful nights there while visiting the UNESCO archaeological sites in the surrounding area. Our hosts, Leonardo and Eva María are genuine and warm and are committed to providing their visitors an authentic visit. Leonardo was a fantastic guide to all of the sites for 2 entire days. We ate all of our meals in the restaurant. María Eva’s food is terrifically fresh and tasty including homemade breads and jams. We highly recommend staying here and wish we could return again.

There’s very little other choice regarding accommodation in the Tierradentro. It was fine for one night and the couple who run it are sweet and hard-working. Keep in mind that it’s a shelter, so the room just had a bed and a table… but we did have hot water. It was great to watch the local (indigenous) people going about their daily activities from the balcony
