I moved to the Posada del Rey after several days in a hostel that had once been a good deal but had become much more expensive. For 25 days I negotiated a price of $16 per day. Don't expect such a good price for a short stay, however. And I did pay up front for 25 days; I thought this was understandable, though there was a risk I might something not to my liking. I tried four hotels before I chose the Posada del Rey. The price and the room was definitely the best among the hotels I looked at; most impressively the manageress (probably the owner) was very decisive in her negotiation, unlike at other hotels. Was it a bit noisy, yes; did I mind the noise, no, not particularly. I had the best room (#3), facing the street but not on the busy corner. I was never kept awake by the traffic, maybe by other concerns, and past a certain hour it wasn't noisy. The room was very clean and was cleaned daily. There was good hot water, including in the sink, which is unusual in Ecuador, though -- like other hotels -- the hot water comes and goes and comes in mysterious ways. The included breakfast was enough for me, but was the same for 25 days. Though arguably a bit noisy, the hotel is in one of the best parts of town. Undoubtedly other deals can be made at other hotels if you want to walk the streets of Cuenca long enough and have at least intermediate Spanish to clinch a deal. I got to see four rooms before I chose, and I definitely got the best room; other rooms are not as impressive.
