A Guide to Puerto Rico's Hidden Natural Wonders

"Playa Poza Del Obispo is a natural pool located on the coast of Arecibo. Hidden behind Arecibo’s Lighthouse, La Poza del Obispo is a shallow beach pool, formed by a natural wall of rock formations through which the water reaches the coast.  La Poza del Obispo means “the Bishop’s Pool,” a name that was given in honor of the Puerto Rican Bishop, Juan Alejo de Arizmendi y de la Torre. It’s said Arizmendi was returning from the Dominican Republic when his ship capsized close to Arecibo’s coast. Luckily, he survived. Part of the attraction of this beach is the spectacle made by the waves crashing against the rock formations. Every time a large wave hits the rocks, the water foams and a spray falls over the people inside La Poza del Obispo. When the sea is calm, the waters in La Poza del Obispo are much like a pool. Primed for snorkeling, colorful fish swim around the beach and hide underneath the rocks. The space for sunbathing is wide but there aren’t many shaded spots, so visitors should wear sunscreen. Occasionally, piragua sellers will visit the beach, so you can enjoy a traditional snack while sunbathing. La Poza del Obispo is a nesting site, so it’s possible to find turtle nests during the nesting season. Los Amigos de la Poza is a group of volunteers that work along with the Department of Natural Resources of Puerto Rico to protect the site and keep the beach clean and free to the public. When sitting in front of La Poza del Obispo, it’s possible to see part of the Lighthouse of Arecibo, also known as Los Morrillos Lighthouse (not to be confused with the Cabo Rojo Lighthouse). This was the last lighthouse built by the Spaniards on the island in 1898 before Puerto Rico became a non-incorporated territory of the United States. Los Morrillos Lighthouse is inside the Arecibo Lighthouse and Historical Park, which offers visitors an interactive tour through the history of Puerto Rico since the Pre-Columbian Era." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Loved the view of the place. There is parking near by and also there also is a wooden boardwalk were it connects the parking to the beach. Went on a Saturday at noon and it was a little crowded. La poza is kinda small, but we still manage to get a space to get wet and cool down. The water was great, you can see fishes all around and the best part is that when a wave hits in a specific rock, it makes an awesome and super great splash that it is just amazing to experience. The place is great for pictures. I do recommend to try to go on a week day.

La Poza del Obispo is an absolute gem in Puerto Rico! The natural beauty of this beach is breathtaking, and the vibe is unmatched. Whether you come fully prepared with all your beach gear or just decide to show up, you’re guaranteed a great time. There are plenty of local vendors offering delicious food and refreshing drinks, so you’ll never go hungry or thirsty. The water is stunning, and the area has a laid-back, welcoming feel. Perfect for a chill day by the ocean. Definitely a must-visit!

We went there on a Thursday afternoon and it was pretty crowded. The rocks prevent waves from coming in so you get a calm pool in which our baby enjoyed a lot! Lots of parking spots and no fees. There was only one shower so it was pretty crowded. We could not find a restroom but there are restaurants nearby. You can drive by Puerto Rico-1 on the way from San Juan for sometime; there are some nice patches.

La Poza del Obispo is an amazing spot for a family-friendly beach day! The soft, golden sand makes it perfect for relaxing, and there’s plenty of parking nearby. The cove itself is a natural wonder—waves crash against the rocks, creating a fun wave-pool effect that the whole family enjoyed. Beyond the cove, there’s a more open beach area where the waves are much stronger, so it’s not ideal for swimming, but it’s still a beautiful place to walk and dip your feet in the water. On the way there, you’ll find plenty of street vendors selling delicious food and drinks, adding to the experience. Highly recommend this hidden gem for a unique and fun beach day!

Google
This natural pool is an excellent spot for spending a day at the beach. Family friendly, safer for kids to swim because the water breaks over the rocks before filling into the pool. We arrived in the afternoon and stayed until the sun went down. My only complaint is that there is a lot of trash in the parking area. It’s sad to see the amount of garbage around this beautiful PR beach.

Beautiful beach to visit…. Arrive there no later than 11:30 am to avoid crowds! There are a series of coral reefs or rocks blocking waves coming into a natural sea swimming pool. This makes this place unique! Parking is free. Hurry up coming to see it before it’s gone with waves! Nearby there are a historical lighthouse & a pirates 🏴‍☠️ theme park. Parking is $3 & adult ticket is $14.

Perfect spot for a family friendly day. Waters are landlocked so it's safe for the children. Only downside, no restrooms.

This beach is amazing! We were there mid-morning on a Thursday but still surprised how empty it was, which was great to have the space. Our two young children loved playing in the sand and swimming in the relatively-calm water. Parking was free and very easy. It's certainly a sight-to-see.

Yelp
Pretty cool beach. Nice mix of locals and tourists. Seems like you have to " be in the know " to get here. Gave me a cool speakeasy type vibe where not everyone knew about this spot. Waters are calm by the beach but huge rocks break up the hard waves coming in. You can climb a little rocky terrain for some amazing ocean views that have to be seen to be believed. They have locals who sell drinks right by the beach. Guy made me a huge fresh lemonade right in front of me. Well worth the price. He also has passion fruit drinks, piña coladas and all your other typical sodas and water for sale. If you go respect the area and clean up after yourself. Don't be the disrespectful tourist or visitor. Cool vibe when I went. Nice mix of young and older people.

Yelp
What an amazing time we had at this beach. The parking was a bit dodgy it once you have parking then the rest is just pure fun. This beach is 100 times better than any man made wave pool. The wAves come in very strong and the crash into the rock formations on both the left and right side and they form the most amazing waves which has everyone jumping to them and riding them. I love this place and will definitely be back. If you are coming to this beach I recommend you bring your own cooler, beach chairs and any else you may need at the beach because there is no where for you to go to purchase anything. We came prepared we had our cooler filled with beer, wine and sangria. Along with plenty of snacks to feed us. What a great time had by all. Highly recommend this place.

Yelp
This beach doesn't exist. The directions take you to a parking lot in town. There is no way to access the beach here. Mostly rocky in this area. The few sandy areas are completely blocked off and inaccessible. Don't try this.

Yelp
This is probably my favorite beach In all P.R. Relaxing spot if your an adult and also to take your kids. Place is always empty in the morning but it gets crowded on the evening!
