I absolutely love La Ruka and would recommend it to anyone visiting Puerto Viejo. After my initial visit, I returned, extended my stay as long as possible, then returned again two months later because of the remarkable impression it left on me.
I felt very comfortable staying in the shared dorms which include personal bedside lamps, privacy bed curtains, locker storage space, fans or AC, and a bathroom which is cleaned daily and well-maintained. The communal spaces like the kitchen, dining area, smoke shack, pool table, gym, yoga shala, and reception are equipped with everything you could need to fully enjoy them.
This is not a party hostel, there are quiet hours from 10pm-7am, which is perfect for me. I made some incredible friendships within the gates of La Ruka because I believe it attracts really wonderful and open-minded travelers. The location is also perfect! It is easily walkable to Cocles and the Puerto Viejo town center. If you don’t prefer walking, they have bikes available to rent which I found to be my favorite way to explore town and travel further distances. There is a local bus service, tuk tuks, and Uber available for transportation as well and the people working reception are very helpful when it comes to figuring out transportation—they even can book you a shuttle to different destinations such as Bocas de Toro and La Fortuna.
Of course, I cannot forget to mention the animals of La Ruka. Mumu, Lily, Ruka, Artemisa, Mr. Ra, and Bagheera are very special members of the family and their presence is so sweet!
Thank you Viola, Dave, Dani, and all of the volunteers for welcoming me at La Ruka and truly making it feel like my “home away from home.” I am so grateful for this place!
