L'Abbondanza Lucana

During a one-day trip to Matera, after a bit of online research, I decided—somewhat by chance—to have dinner at L’Abbondanza Lucana. The surprise was far beyond my expectations. The restaurant is impeccable in every detail. The service was spot-on: our waiter was both warm and highly professional, offering exactly the right amount of information—no more, no less. Every dish we ordered was simply incredible, both in flavor and presentation, and the complimentary tastings they offered were equally delightful. The entire dining experience crowned an already extraordinary day in this unique city, ending it on the perfect note. Prices were more than fair—in fact, I’d say they were on the low side for the quality we received. I wholeheartedly and without hesitation recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Matera. It’s a true gem.

From the moment you walk in, you're welcomed with the kind of warmth that makes you feel right at home. The cuisine is hearty and traditional, with every dish reflecting the rich culinary heritage of the region. It’s honest food—simple, flavorful, and lovingly prepared using quality ingredients that speak for themselves. Ideal for a relaxed evening with friends or family, this isn’t a place for formality—it’s about comfort, community, and good food shared around the table. The staff are friendly, attentive, and genuinely passionate about making guests feel comfortable. A true taste of Basilicata’s soul—humble, delicious, and full of heart.

The location is off the main attraction in Matera. We came without a reservation but the staff showed us to a table right away. We ordered plate tasting antipasti which consisted of four small dishes local to the region. I like the ricotta with sweet celery. Then for main course we ordered lamb and veal. Présentation is good, taste is good and portion is big. There was a big group dining so the staffs were busy with them. My glass was empty since I finished the starter but was not offered another drink. Anyway, that's ok because it was compensated by the beautiful authentic architecture.

We had everything on the menu (summer) and it was just absolutely insanely good. The food is outstanding.

Wonderful restaurant, serving local dishes. The service is outstanding! This is a real treat! Take the Antipasti as a starter, you will be positively surprised. All the pastas that we tried were excellent and the steak is outstanding.

L"abbondanza is one of those places that you will always remember. The food is based on the best products of the region and is creatively prepared and beautifully presented. The decore is elegant and rustic at the same time. The winelist is both regionall deep and extensive. This is the magic that happens when the owners care deeply about quality, tradition and creative innovation. Among the top 20 places where I have eaten. Wonderful!
