"Lady Bird Johnson Grove All the redwood trees in the parks can start to blend together, making it hard for any one area to stand out. But Lady Bird Johnson Grove will. There's a reason Johnson gave her name to this patch of enchanting tall trees and rolling fog. What makes the grove unique is that you drive uphill to get to the trailhead. Most of the groves in the park are in lowland areas, but the elevation at this one means you often find yourself among the clouds as the mist bounds in around the trees. The trail loop is about 1.5 miles and fairly flat. It's especially appealing for kids, who want to be a part of the nature experience but aren't always ready for more-strenuous hikes. Once you pass the dedication plaque, you'll be fairly secluded among the vegetation—even though this grove actually isn't far from the Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center."

Excellent 1.5-mile trail round-trip from the parking lot. Feels like a leisurely stroll. One of the must do hikes in the Redwoods. It is an easy, peaceful, and tranquil trail threw the trees. The forest at this elevation is super lush, supporting an understory of smaller trees and plants. Plus, the ground is covered in ferns in most places.

Google
Magical! There is a reason this is one of the most visited trails in the park. There are so many ancient redwoods, spectacular rhododendrons when in season. The trail is flat and wide, easy to hike for all ages and abilities. GO IN THE MORNING FOR THE BEST EXPERIENCE. Beware: this parking lot will fill up at peak hours during the summer. Also- the road (Bald Hills Road) is not in good condition. You will have to share this narrow road with logging trucks. RVs are not recommended.

Google
An easy, beautiful hike through redwoods and rhododendrons. It's a good hike for most ability levels, with only a few hills, and a wide, level path. It leads past some particularly big redwoods, some of which are hollow, and depending on the season there are all kinds of wildflowers.

The Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail is one of the most accessible and rewarding trails in the Redwood National and State Parks. It’s a fantastic option if you're short on time or want a peaceful walk that still delivers that “wow” redwood experience. And it doesn't require a permit. This is a 1.5-mile loop, mostly flat with a few gentle slopes that's easy for all fitness levels and family-friendly. The trailhead is just off Bald Hills Road, and while the road is a bit winding, the views along the way are beautiful. As soon as you step onto the trail, you’re surrounded by towering coast redwoods, ferns, and lush greenery. The forest is often misty in the morning, creating a magical, almost dreamlike atmosphere. It feels ancient and sacred, quiet, cool, and deeply peaceful. There are interpretive signs throughout the trail that provide insight into the ecology of the redwood forest and the story behind the grove’s dedication to Lady Bird Johnson, former First Lady and a champion of environmental conservation. This trail is more popular than some of the deeper backcountry trails, but it never felt overcrowded. Most people were respectful, and the grove was quiet enough to hear birds, Tips for Visitors: -Wear sturdy shoes as it is mostly dirt and can be damp or slippery. -Go early in the day for fewer people and the best light through the trees. -Bring a jacket or layers even in summer, it can be chilly up in the grove. -Parking is limited, so arrive early during peak season.

You have to see the Redwoods to really appreciate just how huge these trees really are and this grove is absolutely spectacular! The road to get there is quite steep but it is paved. There is parking but it can be limited depending on how many people are doing the hike. There are restrooms on site as well. The trail takes you through some beautiful stands of trees and loops around back to the parking area. It's very much worth the time to wander through it!

Easy walk and a lot of big trees! The redwoods are beautiful. The toad to the trail head is a little bit steep.

Google
Such a privilege to be able to walk this trail. It's not long, so very doable for most people, but it packs a big punch! So many large trees in a small area make the whole space magical. Several areas to just sit and soak it all in. We missed the trail info with the numbered stops, but still enjoyed this special place.

Rebecca Cooke

Google
The road is a little rough (you’ll be sharing it with logging trucks) but so worth it. Wonderful hike through a Redwood forest with interpretive signs. Benches along the way. Get there early: the parking lot is small and there is no where to stop once it’s filled up.

Yelp
Out of all the Redwood National Park trails, I think this is probably my favorite one. Here are some of the reasons why this is hands-down a must visit if you're in the area: - I think this is the most representative trail of what you imagine the Redwoods to be like. The entire trail is full of these 150+ foot redwoods surrounded by mist. It really makes you contemplate your life especially among these magestic vegetation. - The trail is relatively easy to hike as it is pretty wide and doesn't have many elevation changes. - There are a lot of park benches that have very great placement so that you can just be silent and listen to the sounds to the redwoods. I love that you can hear the drip of the water from the redwood branches onto the ferns as well as different types of birds chirping. - Coming here during the wintertime in the afternoon also didn't seem to be too bad as I think there's a certain beauty with the mist. Also, parking was not a problem at all. Overall, I could not recommend this place more in your next Redwoods visit!

Yelp
Make sure you bring water. It's a long trail . But it's super beautiful and worth it. So many awesome things to see and climb. We really enjoyed the entire trail. It was beautiful weather out when we went and I would say the trail does get a bit slippery in some places so make sure to wear some good shoes.

Yelp
This turned out to be one of my favorite hikes on my trip to the Redwood Coast. It is located in Redwood National Park. Lady Bird Johnson Grove is a 1.5 mile loop trail that gives you an intimate look at a mixed forest of redwoods. The trailhead is a few miles off the 101 and has a small parking lot. It is dedicated to Lady Bird Johnson (the former First Lady) for all of her conservation and environmental work. There is a bridge at the start of the trail. The trail itself is pretty easy to walk. You are able to walk through a second-growth forest into an old-growth redwood forest. A forest that has been logged once and has grown back it is called second-growth. The trees here are very dense but thin because very light gets in the area. Because of its high elevation, Lady Bird Johnson Grove can have some fog and is far from any traffic noise. My favorite things about this grove is how shady it is, the ferns all over the ground, and the moss growing on the branches. It is such a beautiful relaxing hike. I enjoyed taking lots of photos with my DSLR camera. There is a dedication plaque to Lady Bird Johnson in the middle of the hike. Dogs are not allowed on this hike.

Yelp
A beautifully accessible and free trail for anyone who wants to experience the splendor of the redwoods. The trail is easy with a few adventurous areas to explore. You can also learn about Lady Bird Johnson and other facts by reading the placards along the trail. While there are many other ways to experience the Redwoods, this one right off the 101 is a hard one to advise to skip; it's beautiful, and wonderfully maintained. I strongly recommend a visit, regardless of the weather, the Redwoods are as beautiful in the fog as they are in the sunshine.

Yelp
20 years ago, my bride-to-be and I took a road trip north to the redwoods. We stopped in Orick at a small diner, and enjoyed a quick breakfast while our server gossiped with a few regulars and kept looking out the window at her small-town arch-nemesis who was meandering around the business across the two lane highway. And I remember that as we drove north out of town, we saw signs for Lady Bird Johnson Grove, and made a shared mental note to check it out someday..... It took two decades, but we finally made it there-- married, with three kids in tow. The steep road to the grove heads pretty much straight up the mountain, and quickly you find yourself at 1000 ft. of elevation from Orick below (which is well within a tsunami danger zone at just a few feet above sea level.) The first thing you'll see to signal your arrival is a wooden footbridge traversing the Highway overhead; parking is just past tue bridge on your right. The grove preserves a few old growth redwoods amidst a sea of second-growth forest. The area is very beautiful and serene: the green of the redwood canopy, and the dense forest beneath of rhododendron, clintonia, ferns, and sorrel. Here and there, various mushrooms and fungi grow. Chipmunks, banana slugs, and salamanders can be found on the forest floor, with various birds singing in the trees. This is a good place for a peaceful walk on the relatively flat hiking path, or use this as a starting point for one of the connected and more strenuous hikes in the area. A beautiful place that thankfully will remain preserved for generations.

Yelp
Amazing! It was our first experience walking through a forest on the west coast and it was everything and more! It gave us an active workout, especially walking with a four year old! I ended up having to carry him for half our walk. The trails are kid friendly but can just be lengthy for those little legs. There are many scenic spots for pictures. Be prepared to carry your trash with you to the entrance of the park! There are bathrooms there too.

Yelp
It's a great circular trail for the family. A lot of photo opportunities along this trail.

Yelp
Beautiful hike in giant redwood forest. Family fun, easy walk. The trail is well maintained by the Parks department. There is ample, secure parking. I have met people visiting this park from all over the world. If you are ever in the area, it is well worth your time to check this one out.
google avatar

Stefani T.

Yelp
From the looks of the parking lot, this is a busy spot! And if we didn't know better, we would have been left thinking the trails were going to be packed. If this is you, I'll tell you now to not worry. Most people don't walk the entire trail. I saw many with dogs (not allowed) stay near the parking lot, others crossing the bridge and reaching the first few trees to take selfies and turn back. After that, the maintained trail loop is sparse with people. The loop is short, and worth walking - if you drove all that way to park, then why not?

Yelp
Stopped off Highway 101 to stretch our legs. Beautiful park with an abundance of majestic Redwoods. Small parking lot. Long wooden bridge takes you up to the trails. Would highly recommend!

Yelp
This was my first stop in Redwood National Park. The drive here isn't too bad, taking Bald Hills road off 101. The trailhead is well marked and it's about 2.5 miles down the narrow, windy road-which isn't too bad-just be courteous for others coming the other way. There is ample parking at the trailhead and two pit toilets (not the best but also not the worst.) For a sunny Saturday, it wasn't all that crowded so it was a peaceful 1.5 mile loop. Easy trail but not to be missed for the serenity and history-it's a great introduction to the park if you're coming from the South. There is an interpretive map that you can pick up at the trailhead and I advise to meander the path, read the various placards and soak in the beautiful forest. All of this is absolutely free! No entrance fee for day use to the park or various trailheads-so no excuses to come out and enjoy!

Yelp
What a cool hike! This is a great kids hike. It's relatively flat and you get to see where Nixon dedicated this area to preserve it. It's about 1.5 miles in a loop. A word of caution, make sure to lock your car and don't keep valuables visible. We were driving up the road and there was some guy siphoning fuel out of someone's car down the road. Thankfully a police officer looked like he stopped to check it out.

Yelp
Super doable easy hike with friends and family. Enjoy the huge redwood trees and see some of the fire damage. You will be awed and inspired.

Yelp
Beyond beautiful! Absolutely amazing! So amazing that I am unable to upload most of my photos because they are "too large" for Yelp. Lame! We took a drive up to Crescent City, and we stopped here to walk around for a bit. Parking was a bit scarce (had to wait a few minutes for someone to pull out of the lot) with maybe 20 parking spots total? There is no charge to walk into this park, and if you want to take a souvenir pamphlet, they ask you to leave $1.00. The pamphlet points out 13 distinct areas along the trail (each one numbered on a wooden post) and gives descriptions on what you are looking at. The walk around the trail is a little over a mile. My mom walks with crutches, so it took us awhile longer than normal, but I had no complaints. The trail is flat for the most part, and the only steep hill is right in the beginning of the parking lot. Even then, it's not a hard hike at all. My mom made it the whole way around. They have benches you can rest on along the trail if you get tired. The coastal redwoods are simply amazing! Words/pictures don't even do them justice. They are SO BIG! 10-15 feet around, and 300 feet high. This grove has them all over the place. Even the small ones, are huge! Besides redwoods, there are wild flowers, ferns, and other trees all along the path. There are quite a few hollowed out redwoods along the path that you can stand inside. These trees burn from the inside out, causing them to hollow out. You would think that they would collapse, but they are so structurally sound, they still hold up. It's an awesome sight to see! If you are driving up the coast, definitely stop here. You can walk the trail in about 30 minutes and be on your way. It was absolutely beautiful and I hope to make it back again someday soon.

Yelp
I visited the Lady Bird Johnson Grove. located within Redwood National Park one misty morning. You drive up about 2.5 miles up a paved road - which locals tell me is a logging road. I'm assuming the road leads to some private land inholdings or other non-National Park lands - past the Lady Bird Johnson Grove. On the way out - going down the mountain, I was behind two logging trucks loaded full. The parking lot itself is not very large. I managed to get a spot and started the hike to the loop trail. I was not paying close attention, but if I had to guess - hiking in, the loop trail, and then back out - maybe 1.5 miles total? Words seem insufficient to describe the experience. Anyway, the trees are breathtaking and gorgeous. Large, massive, tall, wide, beautiful, magnificent, ancient, majestic - are all adjectives I would use to describe these gorgeous Redwood trees! I took some photos and video - but even those fail to give one the total experience of what it's like to stand next to these trees. I spent most of my time in silent appreciation and observation of these trees; Feeling their bark. It's definitely a natural high to visit here! #LadyBirdJohnsonGrove #RedwoodNationalPark #NationalParkService #NPS

Yelp
Beautiful trail, not that busy at all. Will definitely go back. It wasn't too long for a quick diversion, not far from 101, and it was a very well kept trail. A+

Yelp
Oh my this should be on your bucket list! This Redwood grove trail is so beautiful. The trail itself is not strenuous and should be enjoyed at a slow pace. I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Jaycell B.

Yelp
Nice, calm trail. Nothing too strenuous. Definitely an all-age friendly trail. It's approx a 1.5 mile loop. Glad my bf and I were able make a little pit stop before going back home. Plus, it was FREE. There is no excuse for you not to come and visit. Please, please remember to take your trash with you and let's try to preserve our beautiful redwood forests. Would highly recommend. You will for sure endure the presence of the majestic giants!

Yelp
Super easy-going 1.5mile loop trail that starts at a free parking lot which also has restrooms (was open when I went on MLK day during COVID). There's also good cell reception here. Cross a pedestrian bridge that goes over the road and you'll be on your way. Unfortunately trail guides weren't available due to COVID, so the numbers along the way didn't provide much meaning to me. Nonetheless, Lady Bird Johnson Grove was still spectacular and worth a stop.
google avatar

Yelp
How could you not give the beautiful Redwoods five stars. Lady Bird Grove is a short hike but well worth it. There were no streams or water sounds, but plenty of birds sounds. It always amazes me all the people around the world that know of these secluded off the road hikes, we met friendly people from all over the planet. The parking lot was getting full when we arrived around 1:30 pm on a weekday. A great free outdoor adventure in the Redwoods of Humboldt County.

Yelp
We stopped for a quick trail hike and was not disappointed. There were bathrooms and they were eco friendly so no lights or running water but still clean with locking doors and a hook for hanging jackets or bags. The trail was well maintained and very beautiful. Would recommend as an easy trail for any type of adventurer.

Yelp
This is a beautiful loop trail through original growth redwoods with a lush understory and, if you're lucky, beautiful rhododendrons. It is an easy trail, accessible to most, and mostly level. You get to the trail via Bald Hills Road near Orick. The road is paved, but being a former logging road, is steeper than normal and tight -- don't try it with a trailer. This is one of the few roads you can use low gear on your car for. Ironically, it's not super windy, so for the most part it's not a worrisome drive. There's a generous parking lot with bathrooms at the trailhead. A beautiful wooden bridge crosses Bald Hills Road to start the trail. An interpretive brochure provides descriptions for several numbered posts along the way, although the information is pretty basic if you've been to the redwoods much at all. We came here in late May and for the first time lucked out and were here when the rhododendrons were in full flower. We went crazy with pictures! These are not small flowers in the understory, but huge pink/red blooms rising 20 or more feet high. You can get some nice pictures with the flowers mixed in with the native redwoods. But whether the flowers are in bloom or not this is a gorgeous trail and well worth your time. And since it's a short less difficult trail, almost all can enjoy the beauty of the redwoods. A walk along this trail will be many times more rewarding than the drive-through tourist trap "mystery trees" often found in redwood country.
google avatar

Reyn J.

Yelp
Great tall coastal redwood and fern grove. Paths are very well maintained and quite easy to walk on. Exhibits and signage are excellent. The grove has a story to tell! Enjoy!
google avatar

Vidra M.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing stop on our trip. Everywhere you look, there is another tree that you just want to hug and stare at in awe! I thought this was a very beginner friendly hike and you take so many breaks while you stop to take pictures. There was a little bit of drizzle on the day that we visited but by the time it gets to the forest floor, you barely notice it!
google avatar

Sara C.

Yelp
An easy and beautiful hike! We were on a rainy drive up the coast and were hoping for the weather to clear a bit so we could get some hiking in. Fortunately, it dried up a bit so that we could take this hike. It's a windy couple mile drive to the parking lot of the trail -- be careful of oncoming traffic! There's a trail guide for $1 in a little box near the trailhead, and you definitely want to grab one of these. There are numbered signposts that correspond to the guide which explain different phases of the forest and the various life stages of the trees. There was hardly anyone else on the trail when we were there (it did start to drizzle a bit but the trees provided some cover), though the parking lot had started to fill up as we approached the end of the trail. This was a really lovely stop on our drive and I highly recommend it if you are going up or down the coast!

Yelp
We saw sequoias and redwoods in all sorts of different locations during our trip to this area. We went on this trail, though, and we're blown away!!! The trees on this trail are taller and wider than any we had seen anywhere else! We ventured down off the path to get a closer look at gorgeous trees we'd spot, we walked in and around giant hollowed out trees, we explored the centers of massive rings of trees...With the giant trees and lush greenery all around, it felt like we were on a different planet. Amazing! This is a good one for the kids, too. Lots of hideaway places to explore and the trail is pretty flat. There was a gaggle of almost half a dozen kids on the trail the same time we were, and they were having a blast. A must-see for the whole family.

Yelp
We stopped by here late and there was no one around; not one car in the parking lot nor anyone hiking. At first, this hike was a little scary. From the parking lot, you can easily see were the trail starts. We picked up a trail guide from a box which was available shortly after the trail started. This place is beautiful. This trail is short and easy 1 1/2 mile loop with many beautiful redwood trees. This trail is not strenuous at all I loved the self guided trail guide it was fun to read along and learn about the different stages of tree life. You are visually able to learn about the history as well as the ecology of this grove. The spots were well marked so the trail guide was easy to read along. It's educational for the young and old. Don't forget to stop by the Lady Bird Johnson dedication plate from Richard Nixon. It was pretty neat to look at that piece of history.
google avatar

Rachael L.

Yelp
Totally awesome! Best place to see the redwoods that I know of! Accessible and well taken care of by the Forest Service. Don't miss it!

Joseph L.

Yelp
You drive right up to the trail, and there is a small, free parking lot. The entrance to the trail is clearly marked. Unfortunately, because of COVID, they are not stocking the trail brochures, so whenever you come up to a numbered spot, you'll just have to start teaching yourself. The grove is breathtaking. The trail is of minimal difficulty, and you will be surrounded by towering redwoods and lush greenery the entire way. The air is clean. Noise pollution is nearly non-existent. It is a revitalizing experience. Make sure you don't bring any food along the way. Per the signs, they attract crows and jays, which then target the threatened marbeled murrelet that nests in the forest.

Yelp
Located in far northern Humboldt county, this wildflower and wild life area is easy access and relatively flat for hiking, walking. Surrounded by some great old growth redwoods this area is still a beautiful place to enjoy getting back to nature. I stop here often when traveling north, this area is some of the nicest for level hiking, great for a slow pace stroll, good for kids and old folks alike. It is often foggy in the mornings and early evenings, but can still be quite warm during the summer months, there is an abundance of flora and fauna. Well worth the stop and another great place behind the redwood curtain. 00243

Yelp
This was an amazing stop and definitely worth the time. You can get some amazing views and it is not at all an extreme hike. It was not very hard to find as some trails in California are.

Emily S.

Yelp
Great introductory trail/walk for Redwood lovers! This walk has various trees along the way that you can stop and read about with the trail map (labels in front of each tree). At the beginning of the trail, go left (it's a loop) if you go left the numbers ascend instead of descend. This was paved, easy to drive to, parking was a little bit of a nightmare.. people ended up parking on the side of the road, we waited for a spot. There are restrooms at this trail. My husband and I enjoyed taking breaks from the main trail following little paths made by others. This place is active, but also private and quite serene. Bring water with you and sunscreen. There are benches along the way, we saw one couple with a picnic--pretty cute! This was one of our favorite places we went to for exploring hollowed our trees. Take your time and get lost in the best kind of way!

Yelp
We went to Lady Bird Johnson Grove the evening of our hike at Prairie Creek State Park. The loop is about 1.5 miles and takes around an hour to complete at a slow touristy pace. If you are looking for an easy hike through the forest or have small children then this is the place for you. Even though it doesn't have as large of trees as Prairie Creek, It is one of the prettiest groves you will see and the trees are still really freaking big! The sea mist was rolling in when we were hiking and I took some amazing pictures. I hope to add them when I finish downloading from my camera. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Even though it was smoky from fires up the coast, we opted to do this trail. It was the perfect trail with little ones. Just the right length. We were there at around 10 AM in September and there was a beautiful, golden light seeping in through the redwoods. It was simply beautiful. A great taste of the redwoods with young kids!

Yelp
Gorgeous Redwood grove. You must drive or hike uphill to reach it - the trees are gorgeous.
