Lafcadio Hearn's Former Residence

I meant to visit the Former Hosokawa Residence, but mistakenly visited the Former Koizumi Residence. The ticket price is 200 Yen per adult and I don't think it's worth it at all unless you are really interested in the former home owner. It's just an ordinary traditional Japanese house to me.

Beautiful home of the great Lafcadio Hearn. The attention and dedication of Sakamoto-san makes the visit even more beautiful!

Free admission and well maintained. Most info are in Japanese and we couldn't see the back garden as it was closed (prob due to earthquake).

While I knew nothing about Hearn before entering the residence, I found myself curiously googling the man when leaving. The lovely man at the office kindly offered some info about the history of the place — we had the most pleasant talk! And the view over the garden is captivating. Also: there’s a ginger cat at the premises. Five stars.

Currently partially close to public following 2016 earthquake, the entrance is for free.

小泉八雲（ラフカディオ・ハーン。明治29年に日本に帰化し、小泉八雲）が五高（現熊本大学）の英語教師として赴任し、最初の１年を過ごしたのが手取本町の旧居です。 英国人の父、ギリシア人の母の間にギリシャ・レフカダ島に生まれ、2歳の時に父の実家のある英国ダブリンへ帰ります。その後両親が離婚し、大叔母に引き取られて養育され、英国ダラム市近郊の聖カスバート校に入学し、16歳の時に誤って左眼を失明します。 正面を向いた肖像写真がなく、右側のみの写真しか存在しないのは、この左眼失明が理由だと管理人の方が説明されていました。 明治23年4月、ハーンは横浜に到着し、同年9月に島根県の招きで島根県尋常中学校・師範学校の英語教師として松江に赴任。翌明治23年に小泉セツと結婚し、同年11月に第五高等中学校に赴任のため熊本にやってきます。 僅か2年で異国の地である日本で横浜→松江→熊本と移り住み、この間、日本人と結婚という激動の日々を過ごしています。 この手取本町の旧居にはハーンが特に注文して設けた神棚がある等、書斎の机椅子以外は日本文化を受け入れている点に大変興味を持ちました。
