Lafcadio Hearn's Former Residence

Free admission and well maintained. Most info are in Japanese and we couldn't see the back garden as it was closed (prob due to earthquake).

Beautiful home of the great Lafcadio Hearn. The attention and dedication of Sakamoto-san makes the visit even more beautiful!

I meant to visit the Former Hosokawa Residence, but mistakenly visited the Former Koizumi Residence. The ticket price is 200 Yen per adult and I don't think it's worth it at all unless you are really interested in the former home owner. It's just an ordinary traditional Japanese house to me.

While I knew nothing about Hearn before entering the residence, I found myself curiously googling the man when leaving. The lovely man at the office kindly offered some info about the history of the place — we had the most pleasant talk! And the view over the garden is captivating. Also: there’s a ginger cat at the premises. Five stars.

ラフカディオ・ハーンは、19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけて日本文化を世界に紹介した著名な作家です。彼は日本各地を訪れ、その中で熊本にも滞在しました。熊本旧居は、彼が熊本で過ごした家であり、彼の日本での生活や執筆活動を垣間見ることができる貴重な場所です。この旧居は、彼が熊本で英語教師として働いていた時期に住んでいた場所で、彼の作品に影響を与えた日本の風景や文化を感じることができます。現在、この旧居は一般公開されており、訪れる人々は彼の生活や作品に触れることができます。小泉八雲の熊本での経験は、彼の作品に深い影響を与え、日本文化の理解を深める一助となりました。熊本旧居は、彼の足跡をたどる上で重要なスポットです。

🏣熊本県中央区安政町2-6 🅿️🚗…ありませんでした（近隣の駐車場に） 🚃…水道町下車徒歩5分程 ※ 開館時間 9時30分～16時30分 入館料 200円～100円（電車.バスのフリーキップ🎫で割引が有りました） ※ この旧居は熊本に来た、小泉八雲が初めて住んだ家だそうです。 ※ 昭和35年に解体される危機にさらされた、そうですが日日新聞社等が保存会を結成、寄付等を募り旧居の一部分を現在地に移築保存、昭和43年熊本市有形文化財に指定されたそうです。 ※ 1890年 日本に来日（島根県）同地で婦人となる小泉セツさんと結婚…翌年熊本に教師として来県。 松江中学校の英語の教師として。 1894年神戸に 記者として。 日本に帰化し「小泉八雲」と名乗る。 1896年 東京帝国大学の文学部講師となる…その後、著作も次々と出版される。 明暗.心.霊の日本.怪談.知らざれる日本の面影.等々、出版（海外でも） 1904年 狭心症で54歳の若さで亡くなる。 ※ 日本文化に貢献したと従四位が贈られる。 ※ 邸宅には八雲氏が特別に作らせた神棚が有りました（作品に書いた、家庭の祭壇） 日本の習慣、風習、式たり等が気に入られたのでしょうか。 立地の良い場所に移築されていました。 近くにお出掛けの折り覗いてみ作品を身近に感じられる様に思われました。
