Solo Travel Fueled My Writing Career—Then the Coronavirus Happened

"The very first time I visited, for nearly a month during the August off-season in 2018, the kind folks at Laguna Lodge gave me an unoccupied two-story villa instead of the room I'd booked. All that space to myself turned out to be incredibly conducive to my writing process."

Count us lucky to stay at Laguna - great location (walkable to the town of Santa Cruz), lovely staff who was attentive and respectful of our time, and a great breakfast. We were upgraded to a bettor room, at no cost to us, and the staff was helpful when we asked about navigating around the lake. As far as food, I think you have to be smart about what you order - some items are basic (we recommend the tofu stir fry for dinner and the vegan French toast for breakfast, campesino is a classic too). The best thing about staying here is the reserve! Just steps from our room we could start a trail, that was completely private to us, and enjoy the best views around by the palapas which are in fact still there and working. Overall what a fabulous spot that helped us learn more Spanish, appreciate the surrounding nature and even was a leader in environmentally friendly service by the use of an electric car for private shuttle purposes. Would HIGHLY recommend a stay, we loooooved it

Photographs don't do justice to what an amazing place Laguna Lodge truly is. ||Beautifully designed, located on Lake Atitlan (where there is no such thing as a bad view) and with a commitment to minimising its environmental footprint. Our room (the Quetzal Suite) was stunning.||Communication from the team ahead of our arrival was first class and to arrive by boat is an experience in itself. Imelda and Cruz in particular, were both incredibly helpful. The food was great (thumbs up from this vegan traveller!) and the icing on the cake was the beautiful, if slightly steep at times, nature reserve hike. ||Very little to disappoint, but I would say that some of the information and framed reviews are looking a little tired, in the case of the information folders, six years out of date.||However, overall I would say that we had a magical.stay in a breathtaking place that is probably one of the top three hotels I have stayed anywhere in the world. We miss it very much! ||Highly, highly recommended.

The service could have not been better. Leslie, Telma, Cruz, Idelma, and Nico are always willing to help with anything you need. Diego is the best boat captain in Atitlan and Oto the best driver/tour guide you can ask for. And Francisca’s food was AMAZING! I was a little worried about going vegetarian for 6 days but her food is exquisite and they have plenty of options, I did not miss having meat at all! The hotel is gorgeous has amazing massage services, and kayaks. The public transportation is so easy to use, they stop every 20minutes both ways (you just need to wave at them). The view is to die for, you see both volcanoes from your balcony!

Our family had an amazing vacation at Laguna Lodge. Everyone working at the lodge was fantastic and so kind. Imelda, Lesly, Nikolas, Cruz, and Diego were so helpful at the lodge. Rosa was also amazing behind the scenes helping us to plan our vacation. Everyone at the front desk was so patient with us and always responded to my frequent emails! Francisca made us fantastic vegan food, including a 4-course prix fixe menu. Armando was an excellent and safe driver who took us back and forth from Guatemala City. And our multilingual tour guides were amazing as well: Maribel, Humberto, and Fernando, as we explored Antigua, Panajachel, Santiago Atitlan, San Juan, and San Pedro. The lodge was so relaxing and the view from the Jaguar suite and throughout the lodge was breathtaking. Our spa treatments also helped us relax after a journey to the Nature Reserve. A special thanks also for everyone who helped me with my Spanish!! Laguna Lodge is an amazing resort run by kind and caring people. I highly recommend a visit to Lake Atitlan and Laguna Lodge to everyone!

An absolutely beautiful location and amazing lodge! The rooms all have a spectacular view. Our room, the Monja Blanca, had a spectacular view right from the comfortable king size bed. The room has gorgeous furniture and lovely finishing touches. The private sitting area in front of the room was also very comfortable. It shows that a lot of work went into creating the space. |The restaurant food was delicious and reasonably priced. The staff were all very kind, friendly, and very helpful. Special mention to Nicolas who picked us up late and was especially friendly and attentive to us throughout our stay. Thank you Nicolas and all the staff. We appreciate you!|(There is sometimes a smell in the room, as others have said, but it is an ecolodge. Also, it was a bit annoying that the hot tub had to be scheduled and paid for, but easy enough to get over considering the other pros for this place. ) |I highly recommend and would come again.

Best resort experience on Lake Atitlán! The special experience began with a private boat pickup from the dock in Panajachel. Our room was spacious, decorated with beautiful handcrafted items. I highly recommend the meal package—the four-course dinner ranks among my top three, and I’m a picky eater.||I especially loved the private hiking reserve—quiet, with an interesting path and a breathtaking view at the top. It’s also incredibly easy to get public taxis; we never waited more than three minutes.||This isn’t a typical commercial resort but a place that offers luxury and comfort while remaining deeply committed to its local ecosystem. Can’t wait to come back!

An amazing resort that has everything one could need from Hawaii like views to an amazing staff who can assist with everything from booking excursions, travel and anything needed to have a great time. Though the resort is vegetarian, they offer a huge assortment of delicious meals that make it super easy even if you’re a meat eater like myself.

This place is truly the best resort in Guatemala, a combination of a premium luxury experience and a commitment to the local ecosystem. Our Jaguar room was spacious with beautiful furnitures, extremely clean and equipped with everything we need. The amazing view from the restaurant made every meal even more tasty. We opted for the two-day meal package, and every bite was delightful (four course meal every evening)! The resort offers a numerous of activities, including a private hiking reserve—one of the best hikes we’ve ever done. The location is also extremely convenient, we can easily get public taxis pick us up/drop off within minutes. This is not another cookie-cutter commercialized resort but for those who value a destination that is true to its roots.
