Laguna Madre Nature Trail

Very nice “nature walk” … free boardwalk, not too long, out into the marshes of Laguna Madre (the interior side of SPI). Lots of wildlife to see, great signage along the trail with photos of the wildlife there. The highlight is the end of the trail, a small observation pavilion over the water, a great place to watch the many dozens of aquatic birds splashing, catching fish, just hanging out… GREAT place to catch a sunset amid the “buzz” of the wildlife. Highly recommend!

Lots and lots of birds, many different species! Gorgeous views, and truly an astonishing sunset location. Kid friendly, well maintained, nice/easy, sunny trail with multiple sheltered areas along the way incase it’s a super hot day or if your group and you have to take cover from the rain. Turtles, tortoises, and alligators are also located at the visitor center. Restrooms available inside main visitor center. Last couple pictures in this post show an unfortunate bird that flew into “Big Padre’s” (alligator) feeding area and tried eating some left over fish/meat and got caught on the rope or hook they have hanging there.

Great free boardwalk to see birds and wildlife. It has the same view as the paid birding center boardwalk next door. There are also clean public toilets at the start, plenty of parking, and a nice Wyland mural to look at.

Nice boardwalk stroll, lots & lots of different species of birds. Loved the little palapa at the end of the boardwalk for some shelter from the sun. Took some good pictures & videos. We missed the Bird & Nature Center by a half hour (they closed at 5pm), but it was nice to catch this little nature trail and still see some cool birds :) 🦅🕊️🦆🦢

Entrance is by the convention center with plenty of parking. At the entrance is a small but nice park and restrooms. The walkways to the bay have informative signage and wide paths with railings. Some sections are covered and have seating for taking a break and watching wildlife. Overall a nice relaxing way to enjoy birds and wildlife of the island bay side.

FREE. Very interesting little wildlife boardwalk. Needs to a couple of different piers in the area. Nice view of the wetlands and bay. No fishing allowed, so don't even think about it. Pictures encouraged though. Don't forget to check out the Wyland murals on the way out. Outdoor bathrooms open and for public use.

Stunning sunset views. Very quiet and calm. Great for evening walks.

You can visit this place free of cost and enjoy a nice walking area with plenty of opportunities to see birds, reptiles, and a beautiful sea view. It’s also a great spot for fishing enthusiasts. Highly recommended for a relaxing and enjoyable outdoor experience!

Next to the south Padre island convention center. Really nice views. Unfortunately I got there a tad bit too late. Forgot to take pictures before the sun set, still beautiful though.

What a relaxing walk! There are 3 trails, hard to find the one NOT by the visitors center but it's there. Bathrooms located behind the Whaling Wall since the building isn't open due to COVID but the walk is still open. Watch for the flying fish and the adorable birds down in the grasses. We also saw crabs, various fish, turtles and birds...all different kinds. Free and just a nice place to relax and explore.

A short walk on the trail, but it was beautiful. We walked it before a concert and it was fun and short. We got some coffee before heading over, there was a sunset with the birds chirping around. My partner somehow got bitten by bugs quite a bit in the grass area before heading into the trail.

I would definitely recommend doing the nature trail around sunset. Every year my family comes to South Padre and we watch the sunset at Laguna Madre. Once you walk through the trail you'll end up at a pier with a beautiful view of the Bay.

The Laguna Madre Nature Trail is a 1,500-foot boardwalk that starts out near the South Padre Island Convention Center and meanders on out to the Laguna Madre wetlands. This is a HOT SPOT for major bird-watching! Here is where you will find people walking around with binoculars and long-lenses cameras--very excited about spotting some rare migratory bird. Throughout the year, more than 300 species of birds pass through the South Padre Island area and here is the best place to see them in their natural habitat. The Trail also incorporates a Butterfly Garden and has lots of plantings specifically geared to attracting butterflies and birds with their flowers, seeds or foliage. There is even a Memorial Creek that has water tumbling down amid rocks that the birds really seem to enjoy dipping in. The Wave Shuttle driver told me that a while back someone put two small alligators into the wetlands area here and they have now since grown into two very large (and hungry) alligators, although I never sighted them when I visited. The wooden boardwalk is very well built. There are lots of signs giving information as to what you are looking at or should be looking for. I love that the "Whaling Wall" is nearby. Try and visit in the cooler morning or later afternoon hours as it can get toasty here. In fact, I had to deduct 1 YELP STAR from the Laguna Madre Nature Trail for there not being a bench or seat for people to rest on--especially in the shade. While waiting for the Wave Shuttle, I was forced to squeeze myself into the one shady area under a big tree and dodge bees buzzing around the area I leaned against. South Padre Island nature-lovers could easily sponsor some kind of memorial bench they could place for people to use for seating along the road where the Wave Shuttle runs.

# To the Budget Traveler: This is totally FREE. Just park at the convention center and go. It isn't as well kept as the trail at the Birding and Nature center next door, but you should still be able to see quite a lot of birds. I went to the Laguna Madre Nature Trail, because I had noticed it from the Isla Birding and Nature Center next door. Even though this trail is free, I'm still glad that I went to the Birding Center next door first. I was lucky, because on that day at the Laguna Madre (Convention Center) trail I was able to sight an alligator. However, there aren't as many clearing and nice viewing spots as in the Birding Center next door. There is a lot of overgrowth of bushes that will block your sight. The blinds and sitting spots are also not as nice as in the Birding Center. If you get thirsty, hot or need to go to the bathroom then walk into the convention center. I am glad that I visited both this convention center trail and the Bird Center trail next door. Each had it's own special collection of birds and sights.
