"Less than an hour from Guadalajara, Lake Chapala—Mexico’s largest lake—offers a relaxing respite from the big city. Visitors can enjoy drinks or a meal at one of the many restaurants on the pier, watch the sunset from a sandy beach, or rent a boat to the Island of Scorpions for a different view. There are plenty of boutique hotels around the lake should you be interested in an overnight stay. To get to Lake Chapala, catch a direct bus—they leave every 30 minutes from Guadalajara’s Old Bus Central. The air-conditioned ride through the mountains of Jalisco takes somewhere between 45 minutes and an hour, depending on traffic, and costs approximately US$5 for a round-trip ticket. Once you arrive at the Chapala bus station, the lake is about a 10-minute walk away on the main street."

The lake is breathtaking and has a pleasant weather in December. Many stalls are set up for tourists along the lake. The price is inexpensive and you may also enjoy the hanging acrobatics show and performance during the weekend.

Didn't expect such a huge lake in middle of Mexico! What a pleasant surprise. Though the water appeared abit greenish, Chapala Lake seemed like an ocean. Taking a boat ride around the island was very refreshing n lots of fun. A definite place to visit 😊

Toxic soup of agricultural chemicals. Very pretty, though. You either love or hate this lake and its surroundings. There's really no middle ground. Personally, I think it's one of the prettiest and most welcoming places I've ever lived, despite all the whining I keep hearing from newcomers, lately. Pro-Tip: If you come here and you find that you hate it, LEAVE. Don't stick around, polluting the local atmosphere with your incessant bleating.

I took a daylong tour out to the lake from Guadalajara. Had lunch, rode a boat on the lake. And visited a lakeside town. The pace of life is nice and slow. You’ll feel relaxed out here.

Recently moved from Los Angeles, CA. I do not regret it at all. Mexico is about family, the various types of restaurants, stores, street vendors, then to top it off in the late afternoon hours to chill by the lake is relaxing. How rewarding 👍

A beautiful not too far from Guadalajara. It’s a great place to grab some lunch or dinner and enjoy this beautiful view. This place is pretty calm on weekdays, not a lot of people. On the weekends though it can get pretty busy but the cool part is that there are a couple street shows you can enjoy.

The lake is pretty polluted, but people still swim and fish it. It is the largest lake in Mexico by surface area. It is not very deep, only 10 meters at most. The lake contains three small islands: Isla de los Alacranes (most visible from the town of Chapala), Isla Mezcala (the largest island, featuring an old Spanish fort and an old Mexican prison),[4] and a third very small island[5] next to Isla Mezcala called La Isla Menor

Yelp
Gorgeous and relaxing lake. The lake is enormous. Chapala has a beautiful remodeled boardwalk and a statute called "Jesus el pescador" (Jesus the fisherman) The lake is usually surrounded by locals and not many tourists. If you come make sure to try the bomb micheladas, charales (little dried fish), fried fish, native candy, ice cream etc. Beat days to come are during the week in the afternoon when most of the vendors are also open for business. Make sure togo on a boat ride to one of the two island on the lake. You can definitely pick up some authentic Mexican souvenirs. The boardwalk also has a couple of seafood restaurants and hotels. A think this is a great place to visit it isn't that well known by many tourists. If you leave the boardwalk and head into town (walking distance) you will see the local cathedral, municipal buildings, drug stores, cafes, bakeries, mercado, plaza, rodeo, fair grounds and many other great stores. A MUST PLACE TO VISIT SOMEDAY!

Yelp
La pasè super!! This is my first time coming to Chapala, and I absolutely had a blast!! The weather was just perfect and the boat ride, fantastic!! We got to the Isla de los Alacranes by boat and ate a typical fish dish and drank some tequila concoction served in a cazuela, my friend, who is a Guadalajara native, showed me around and we had an amazing time.
