A Journey Through New Zealand’s Less-Visited Corners Showcases Māori History and Kiwi Innovation

"Lake Hāwea Station is an eco-resort and working ranch known for its regenerative farming practices. Owned by Jussie and Geoff Ross, it aims to sequester significantly more carbon than it emits and has been positioned as the future of farming in New Zealand. It features chic cabins and a landscape villa."

Lake Hāwea Station – Hotel Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"It’s difficult to categorize this ranch an hour and a half from Queenstown. Part working farm, part high-design retreat in New Zealand’s high country, Lake Hāwea Station’s draw seems to be its intersectionality between the rugged Kiwi farm culture visitors want and the sophisticated taste that defines the country’s luxury-lodge circuit. But scratch a little deeper to see that this 16,000-acre property’s true point of difference is its pioneering ethos in New Zealand’s approach to cultivation and sustainability. When owners Justine and Geoff Ross scooped up the place, in 2018, the land and its structures, including a pair of turn-of-the-century cabins used to house shepherds, needed nourishing. They set to work transforming the property, replanting 100,000 native trees to replicate how the land may have been when the Ngāi Tahu  iwi, or tribe, of the South Island would migrate to this area to hunt in the pre-colonial era and gussying up the cabins with cool interiors, sprawling terraces, and comfy beds, all with knockout views of the lake, for travelers who may want to stop in to watch the shepherds round up the merino sheep or simply laze around the swimming pond with the free-roaming kune kune pigs.  Certain paddocks have been designated regenerative to help nurse the land back to health, and all energy is renewable—nearly unheard-of for a working farm. The Rosses’ goal is to achieve 10 times carbon positivity in 10 years and, in so doing, set a new standard for how farms can operate in a way that more effectively sustains the planet. Yet for its impressive goals and admirable work put into achieving them, Lake Hāwea Station is still, simply, one of the most impressive, can’t-believe-this-place-could-possibly-exist retreats you’ll ever be lucky enough to stay in. Waking up before the day starts from its centerpiece Lake House, an impossibly chic landscape villa with glass walls, and sipping coffee as the rising sun slowly reveals the still-as-glass lake, edged by the snow-dusted Southern Alps and jagged hills, is simple and extraordinary, the type of slowed-down experience that forces you to reflect on how incredible it is to have ended up here in this gloriously perfect pocket of the planet. Which is one of travel’s most precious gifts." - Erin Florio

My partner and I had the pleasure of staying at Lake Hawea Station. It was the best holiday experience we have ever had. Was the perfect environment for us to come and shut off by still experiencing a luxury environment. Everything was a pleasure from the Service the accommodation and entire scenery was second to none. Cannot wait to come back thank you everyone that made our trip so memorable.

Lake Hāwea Station occupies a charmed place in the world, and we couldn’t be more grateful to have spent a bit of time there. From the moment we arrived, Annie made us feel right at home. We learned about the mission of the Station, its relationship with the land, and its history. Mitch took us on a beautiful tour of the farm — we were able to meet some of the animals, see the sunflower field, and we even spotted a group of stags on the mountainside. Thanks, Mitch!! The Packhorse Cottage was perfectly provisioned and incredibly comfortable & well-appointed. We loved the history of the cottage. In sum: Lake Hāwea station is a slice of heaven! Thanks to all who made our stay so memorable.

My friend and I stayed in one of the cottages whilst on a ski trip and we had the most amazing time staying at the station! It was absolutely stunning and the communication from the hosts was outstanding! Perfect spot to wind down and relax after a big day skiing! Would come back in a heart beat!

I don't know what else to say about this place but wow. One of the best lodgings we've ever stayed in. The property is gorgeous, and from the moment you drive up you feel how relaxed and calm it is. Our cabin was utterly perfect, and everything was so comfortable and cozy that we never wanted to leave. But by far the best part, as so many others have said, is the team working there--Annie gave us incredible tips, even after we left, and made us feel like part of the family. I wish we could have stayed for a month, and we'll definitely be back next time we have the chance.

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Lake Hawea Station. Meeting Annie & Barbara was fantastic, they are incredible hosts. Annie set everything up for us and made sure we had everything we needed and more for a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Her thoughtful recommendations and warm hospitality made us feel right at home. We stayed in the Homspur Cottage, which is perfect for two people, cozy, comfortable, and fully equipped with everything you need. Once you check in, you really don’t feel like leaving! There’s so much to do right on the property we loved biking, walking the trails, and simply taking in the beautiful scenery. It’s also a great base if you want to explore Wanaka and the surrounding area. Also loved that Annie spent time to highlight the mission of the station and the sustainability work they’re doing! A truly special place. We can’t wait to return!

Truly the most magical place we have ever stayed! We stayed in the Packhorse Cottage for a couple of nights and had an amazing tour with Richie. All of the recommendations from Tracey and the team were incredible and we loved exploring Hawea and Wanaka.
