We recently stayed in a Frontier cabin at Lake Lodge Cabins. There are 3 classes of cabins at Lake Lodge: Pioneer, Frontier, and Western. It's my understanding Frontier is the middle of the road cabin....nicer than Pioneer. I made these reservations at a date very close to our trip. I was looking for something reasonably priced. The hotels on the park are extremely expensive. The hotels off the park in very close towns like West Yellowstone are very expensive, too. We paid a base rate of $196 per night for our Frontier cabin. To the people saying this is too expensive, try finding anything anywhere near Yellowstone for this price. Lodging in Yellowstone and near Yellowstone is EXPENSIVE. This cabin was the best value I could find. I was looking at $300-$500 per night for a hotel on or near the park. I was unwilling to stay in a dump, sleep in a tent cabin, or share a bathroom with strangers. Yellowstone is such a huge park that if you want to see it all, it is necessary to stay on the park or in West Yellowstone. Too much driving is involved otherwise. This cabin was the absolute best value for what we needed and I'm so glad we stayed here.
The cabin was larger than I expected, had 1 double bed with plenty of extra blankets, and a good heater. We needed the heat as it was getting down to about 30F at night. If the room gets too hot, you can air it out by opening the windows. There was a sink in the same room as our bed and a shower and toilet in a separate room. The room was very clean, had the cutest bear soaps, and looked very appealing. Rustic but comfortable. My child kept calling it "the cozy cabin." I do wish the bed would have been larger, but it worked fine for us, especially considering the cost savings of 1 bed vs 2 beds.
I looked at reviews online and at pictures. Xanterra is the concessionaire for the park and according to their website, the Frontier cabins have been recently remodeled. For our stay, they were about $25 more per night than the Pioneer cabins. I thought it was worth paying the extra for a nicer cabin. It wasn't that much more. The cabin was nice and clean and considering it's in the middle of nowhere in an area with extremely expensive lodging options, I was thrilled with the accommodations. I would not recommend waiting until the last minute to make reservations like I did. We were very blessed a cabin opened up at such a late date. A week or so prior they were showing no availability for our dates.
There is no wi-fi or cell service in the cabins. You can connect to free wi-fi in the Lodge (which is beautiful and spacious), which is across from the lake in front of the cabins. Lake Lodge is much more chill than the Old Faithful area. It was nice to stay in an area that was more calm. Wiley's Cafe is in the Lodge, and we enjoyed eating there. There is also a nice gift shop and a laundry in the Lodge. Every employee I encountered at Lake Lodge was very helpful and courteous.
There are lots of wild animals at Yellowstone, including bears, even around hotels and cabins. I live in bear country, so I am very bear aware. I was not raised in bear country and can understand why people might not understand about bears. Before moving, I didn't either. Please be very cautious with your handling of food and garbage. Please do not leave food or garbage in your car. I was hesitant to leave food in the cabin, considering a bear tried to break into my personal home once over a garbage can. Obviously, you need snacks in your cabin. The only snacks we had in our cabin were trail mix and nuts. I felt uncomfortable with meat or cheese in the cabin. There are signs that say "no cooking in the cabins." That is for a very good reason. There are also no refrigerators in the cabins. Don't be afraid, but use common sense!
