"As you approach Lake Naivasha from Nairobi, the one-lane,potholed road risesand you are suddenly treated to a truly awesome view of the Great Rift Valleystretching outto the horizon. Shimmering within that vistaisLake Naivasha, a popular weekend destination for Nairobians. The lake itself is beautiful in a prehistoric-looking way, with wispy, jagged trees jutting up from the water and hippos bathing in the midday sun. Along the boggy shoreline, before thewater lilies and tropical grasses give way to the open water, it’s easyto imagine ancient creatureswriggling their way up onto landand eventually evolving into the first hominids. While in the area, explore Hell's Gate National Park andits gigantic gorge, take a boat trip on the lake in search of hippos, and get your fill of the freshly made pizzas at Camp Carnelley’s."

Very interesting place. Loads of cool birds. Boat ride to crescent Island was fun and the island itself was pretty cool. Lots of ostriches, they do come close so watch for their head pecking you. I'd recommend going early because of the sun but it doesn't really matter.

Peaceful Escape at Lake Naivasha – A Perfect Extension to Our Trip We extended our trip to include Lake Naivasha, and it turned out to be one of the most peaceful and refreshing parts of our journey. The lake’s serene waters, surrounded by lush greenery and birdlife, created the perfect atmosphere to relax and unwind. We enjoyed a boat ride where we spotted hippos, fish eagles, and countless other bird species. The views were stunning, especially with the backdrop of Mount Longonot. The area is also rich in wildlife—you’ll likely see zebras, giraffes, and waterbucks roaming freely along the lake shores. The weather was cool and pleasant, and the sunsets over the lake were simply breathtaking. It’s a wonderful place for nature lovers, photographers, or anyone wanting to slow down and soak in some natural beauty. Definitely a must-visit if you're exploring the Rift Valley region. Would highly recommend staying a night or two to fully enjoy the magic of Lake Naivasha.

Great place to see hippos and have a boat ride on the lake. It was one of our 7-day Safari destinations and we truly enjoyed it, the main reason to go there is an opportunity to have a walking tour on Crescent Island sanctuary, the only place, where you can walk with all the animals: giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, impalas and whaterbucks. Amazing feeling to see these animals so close.

Lake Naivasha, nestled in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya, is a breathtaking freshwater lake that offers a perfect mix of natural beauty, wildlife, and serenity. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a photographer, or simply looking for a peaceful retreat, Lake Naivasha delivers an unforgettable experience. Scenery and Atmosphere The lake is surrounded by acacia trees, volcanic hills, and lush greenery, providing a tranquil setting that feels far removed from city life. Sunsets here are particularly spectacular, with the water reflecting hues of orange, purple, and gold. It’s a great place to unwind and connect with nature. Wildlife and Activities One of the highlights is the boat safari, where you can glide across the lake among pods of hippos and watch fish eagles swoop down to catch their prey. The lake is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 400 species recorded in the area. On the shores, it’s common to spot giraffes, zebras, and even colobus monkeys, especially if you visit nearby Crescent Island or Hell’s Gate National Park. Accommodation and Access There’s a wide range of accommodation, from luxury lodges to budget-friendly campsites, many offering stunning views and access to the lake. The area is easily accessible from Nairobi, just a 1.5 to 2-hour drive, making it a great weekend getaway. Tips • Early mornings are the best time for birdwatching and photography. • Be cautious near the water due to the presence of hippos. • Consider hiring a local guide to enhance your understanding of the ecosystem and wildlife. Final Thoughts Lake Naivasha is more than just a scenic spot—it’s a peaceful escape into Kenya’s vibrant natural world. Whether you’re exploring by boat, biking nearby trails, or enjoying a quiet afternoon by the water, it offers something for everyone.
