Review of Lake Ohau Lodge Our experience at Lake Ohau Lodge was overall good, but there are a few areas that could be improved. The lodge is in a beautiful location with stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains. The atmosphere is cozy, and the staff was consistently friendly and helpful. We were especially impressed by the dinner—delicious food in a lovely setting. However, some aspects do not quite match the price-performance ratio. The WiFi is only available in the lobby and restaurant, not in the rooms. At the rates charged per person per night, a reliable internet connection should be standard. The rooms are clean and in good condition but not technically modern. A TV in the rooms would be appropriate given the premium pricing. Overall, it’s a nice lodge with great service and good food, but there is room for improvement in some areas.

Very dated and very poor , run down rooms...I've stayed in better backpackers to be honest! Very shabby and need of a revamp. Room was like a sauna...had to keep the sliding door open a bit during the night for some air! Peeling paint and damage to the walls...wardrobe door hanging off...double bed , basic, so-so comfy (after I took off the plastic mattress protector (like you'd put on for a bed-wetter!) And could feel the wires from the electric blanket protruding through the sheets...both were taken off, to reveal a very stained, worn mattress! Put back on a fluffy mattress protector and changed over the worn, tired, lumpy bedspread, for a throw they had in the wardrobe. Bed bunks crammed in same room as the double, with a single trundle bed underneath. Wouldn't like to be in there all together, as it was stuffy enough with one in there. The en-suite bathroom was modern and clean, the only nice bit of the room! No TV , or WIFI. Basic, to say the least. No comfy chair to relax in to admire the wonderful view, just a wooden chair and another dating from the 1980's! Food in the restaurant was nice...(not much choice, only 2 mains for selection)...Everyone staying there ate all together in the restaurant at the same time. 7pm. All crammed in. I was to sit with a group at a long table, on a bench seat...which I couldn't get into *due to a leg problem. and would've had to sit where 2 bench seats were together ie: my butt cheeks would've been on the join. Like school camp! Breakfast was nice, except for the coffee... Thec tables weren't wiped down , ready for the next lot coming in for breakfast. Staff were friendly, but need to be more attentive. Not worth the money they're charging. Would've been great back in the day... But needs upgrading and modernizing. Could be great...just a shame, as it's in a great spot. 'Lodge'...'Backpackers' Dissapointed

Having stayed there before, I had high hopes. It is a spectacular location. And the rest is totally sub-par. Wi-fi is not available in the rooms. Only in the lounge and dining room. This is 2025. I'm sure some guest comment they dont want it. But really. This is 2025 We paid for room, dinner, bed and breakfast. The room. Was probably lovely 30 years ago. But thay was the last time it had any love. The paint was extensively peeling, carpet pulling away from the walls, furniture stained and de-laminating in places. The fridge light worked. But the refeigertor didn't refrigerate. The bed was old and tired with old tired bedding. It was clean. And the bathroom was ok. But the outside of the building was grubby and unkempt. For the price it was very poor. Even accounting it's mild remoteness. Dinner. 3 course. Soup. Nice. Tiny portion. Main. Cold tastless overcooked grey lamb in gravy with globules of visible liquid fat. Tiny portion of overcooked greens. Well roasted potatoes. Dessert. Quite nice. Breakfast. Greasy. small portion of low quality. Food. Overall. For $160 dollars for 2 Poor. Again - remoteness really isn't an excuse. It's just poor. Staff were nice. But not very efficient. I'd love to recommend this place as the setting is fantastic. But it represents very poor value for money. With dilapidated rooms and poor food. The reason it's getting 5 stars is that setting This was the Temple wing. (possibly the other room wings or backpackers may vary) This cost $360 for two. But the food probaly won't vary If you do stay, sort your own food. Not recommended. Definitely won't go back Stay somewhere else. (PS We travel sufficiently regularly and eat out frequently enough to know what to expect for the money)

Superb location with great views. The lodge is very dated though and obviously hasnt been refreshed in a very long time. We felt the room was overpriced. There was one small wooden chair in the room to sit on other than the bed itself. I would’ve expected a very comfortable experience for $210 per night. The flies had taken over the games room and we paid too much for the breakfast which took 30 minutes to arrive and was well over cooked. It appeared there was nobody in charge overseeing customer service. We won’t be going back to this lodge which is a pity as the small things can be a make or break for guests.

Friendly accommodated. Excellent service. Easy communication to organise a birthday arrangement - bring own cake to be served after dinner. Dinner with strangers was a pleasant surprise! Compliment to the chef for an excellent dinner experience.

Perfect for those stopping on the Also to Ocean bicycle route. Amazing views, fantastic food, they have a laundry and drying room, well stocked bar and plenty of heating.

Loved our stay here. We’ve never seen our toddler eat as much food as he did at Ohau Lodge! Amazing granola. Great vibes and lovely team
